The key I believe in getting faster is all about technique, much more than fitness.
i can swim for a very long time. However, I went to a swim camp with video analysis and my stroke was almost rebuilt. In the pool I am a 3 to 3.2k an hour now. Would still like to be faster but think that is probably unlikely now! The key for me is being able to sustain that speed over distance which to be honest in the sea does drop below that quite a bit spending on conditions and having to sight etc.

I also think the most important thing though is just to enjoy swimming and the benefits being in the water gives you. My mental health is much better when I am swimming regularly !
If anyone has any questions about long distance swimming, I’m happy to answer them!

lljkk · 20/08/2020 15:38

I have a huge mental hang up about swimming (well, all sport really). I dread the idea of ever getting swimming tuition.

I genuinely have the experience of listening very carefully to an instructor, doing exactly what they said repeatedly. Instructor comes over to say I'm doing it completely wrong. In very.slow.words they repeat the instructions exactly as I've been doing them in my head. I say "That's what I was doing". They shrug & walk away & give up on me.

Repeat for swimming, tennis, other sport I ever tried...
Taught me that doing my very best sometimes was still an absolute definite failure and could not be fixed.

Must be very nice not to have hangups like this (!!)
Lockdown has taught me I'm a huge coward in many areas so this is just one more...
I have something productive I can do now so am coaxing self off of MN.

JerseyMermaid · 20/08/2020 15:56

@lljkk that is not your fault that is the fault of the instructor. They should find another way to explain!

Don’t let it put you off & just enjoy your swimming.

I found being videod was amazing: if you can get a friend to do that (although I know lots of pools won’t allow that) making any changes can feel really odd but it doesn’t actually look like it feels, if that makes sense!

Xiaoxiong · 20/08/2020 16:26

lljkk how about a dryrobe? would that help for the journey home?

Jersey that sounds amazing. At the moment I'm building my endurance up - today I swam 2km in 48 mins again, I think once I can swim that comfortably in more like 40 mins I will contact a swimming coach and see if I can have a lesson (would LOVE to do a swim camp but I think covid means I'll be waiting a while!)

Update on lotions and potions: Philip Kingsley conditioner on wet hair under the swim cap resulted in excellent soft swishy hair once I shampooed it out post-swim. The Superdrug 3-in-1 anti-chlorine stuff works too, I asked my family if I smelled of chlorine when I got home and they all say no. Jury's out on the Vit C gel moisturiser - I still feel a bit tight on my face, but maybe I just need a few more days using it regularly after swimming. I think tomorrow I will try vaseline on my forehead and cheeks and then the moisturiser afterwards.

I shouldn't have worried about my friend that came along, she happily did her own thing - I just said at the start "well, see you in 80 lengths!" and charged off - then it was nice to chat in the changing room after.

lljkk · 20/08/2020 17:29

Yeah I know I shouldn't have a hang up, silly really.
It's ok. I don't do any of these things with hope of "improving".

Don't think I can cycle in a dryrobe.

Looks like I could get a man's used medium (would fit me) wetsuit from Ebay for £20-£25.

I wish I knew if the changing cubicles were likely to open...

could sell the wetsuit on for about £10-£15 loss, so not too big a risk if I get one. If I like it, I can keep it for kayaking in during the winter... :)

profpoopsnagle · 20/08/2020 18:15

I did my first post lockdown pool swim today! I did a little bit in the sea over the last few weeks whilst on holiday but nothing too strenuous. It Felt So Good! Only managed 60% of what I was doing in March but I'm getting back. The clear head space was delicious.

Our pool has between 4-6 90 minute slots per day that you have to book in advance. The latest available one is 5:15pm, which will be the only one I can do when I return to work. There were 5 lanes today, 2 slow, 2 fast, 1 medium. I went in the medium as there was only 1 other person, although a third joined us later.

I think the thing about lanes and speed is a little bit like motorways, you have to match your speed to the others already in. So you could be a slow swimmer but if others are much slower, you might be better off in medium. Also check out how many others are in there, there's no point 6 swimmers using a slow lane if there's only one in a medium.

In March, I was about 40-45 seconds per length. So I mainly swim medium, but really try hard to give way to faster swimmers where I can (did so today once). I do find medium can attract faster (usually male) swimmers that would rather be the fastest in a medium lane, than go in the fast lane and be the slowest!

But it really comes down to etiquette, there's no shame in letting someone faster go on, and I prefer swimming when I haven't got someone on my tail. It's the ones who wait until you approach and are almost ready to turn lengths and then they set off that really get my goat, not everyone has a rest after a length!

tizwozliz · 20/08/2020 18:49

Philip Kingsley conditioner on wet hair under the swim cap

This is really bad for water quality in the pool. The chlorine smell you get in pools is due to the reaction of things like this alongside sweat etc. with the chlorine. Ditto vaseline and anything else you're trying to put on before swimming.

Xiaoxiong · 20/08/2020 20:04

Oh no! I thought it would be ok as it was designed for the US Olympic swim team to put on before training, and I wore it under a silicone swim cap. And so many people/websites suggested Vaseline for my face. My hair is actually ok without the PK, it was mainly the skin on my face that was getting super dry so I will stick with the vit C moisturising gel at the end.

jewel1968 · 21/08/2020 11:20

Normally you are advised to not put anything on your skin/hair as it interacts with chlorine causing chlorites. That's why we should all shower before we swim. It is chlorites you smell not chlorine. It is possible that the PK conditioner is specifically formulated? Check their website.

Xiaoxiong · 21/08/2020 13:25

I always do shower beforehand - it was mainly just dryness on my face I was trying to prevent, so many different recommendations everywhere in terms of what's ok and what's not in terms of before/after etc Confused Anyway I will stick to moisturising afterwards with Vit C and trying to keep myself hydrated from the inside. 1L bottle of water next to my laptop and trying to finish it before lunch and then after lunch - guarantees I've had at least 2L a day.

current pool says 30-45 seconds to do a length means go in the medium lane

This is such a good idea - may suggest that to our lifeguards! We even have the minute clock going round on each wall so people can time their laps easily. We also have people who seem to prefer to be the fastest in the slow lane rather than be the slowest in the fast lane, but then come right up and tailgate.

jewel1968 · 21/08/2020 15:23

@Xiaoxiong - I know there is lots of advice out there and I suspect we are all amateur experts 😊.

I love the idea of a guide for the lanes. I think my lifeguard would look at me dumbfounded if I suggested that. I am faster than 30sec doing crawl and slower doing backstroke. And I like to alternate which sometimes makes me a tailgate and sometimes the one with a tailgate on me. I often hop between the lanes which is a faff. That's why I love an empty pool😊.

wiltingflower · 21/08/2020 21:59

I've booked a swimming session (slow lane) for Sunday and am looking for any advice or reassurance for this please!

I've not swam since around a year ago at the seaside and I've never been in a swimming lane before (runner recovering from an injury) so I'm a bit worried about getting lane etiquette wrong. I've already read up about lane etiquette on Google and swimming rage threads on Mumsnet but I still feel quite worried. I think after going once I'll be able to decide whether to go again or not but I feel like I don't belong in the swimming pool already!

jewel1968 · 22/08/2020 19:28

@wiltingflower - it is pretty straightforward. There will be varying speeds in all lanes. I find I spend a couple of mins at the start to guage the swimmers and figure out how many are very fast, fast medium etc...

You may find you are faster than those in the slow lane. Given you booked slow lane I imagine that you can't move about?

My advice is observe for a couple of mins. Then do a length and see how you compare. If I am in a lane with someone much faster than me I tend to push off after them and swim in their wake. If I am faster I do the opposite and try and plan it so I kick off before they do. This requires observation and a reasonable idea of your own speed compared to others. It can also mean a bit of hanging about at the end.

Give it a go and don't worry.

tizwozliz · 23/08/2020 09:08

Has anyone got any recommendations for prescription swim goggles? I don't actually need them for swimming, but I want to be able to see the timing clock. It's not normally an issue, but covid stuff means I now can't see it.

I have a fairly small head - normally have to wear women's or junior goggles so might limit choice somewhat.

lljkk · 23/08/2020 10:45

Our pool clocks are all turned off, WTAF. No idea why. I would get out early to put my bra on in the toilets and a dry top for dripping exit if I knew when I had 2 minutes left...

I am ignoring the timing suggestion and now booking fast lane (deviant me). The 6m wide fast lane had 5 of us other day, of which I was same speed as 2 others. The 5m wide medium lane had 8 people in it (none faster than me). We're back to our actual usual actual relative speeds, not what the online system says it thinks they are.

profpoopsnagle · 23/08/2020 11:06

@tizwozliz I have just bought a new pair from www.prescription-swimming-goggles.co.uk/swimming-goggles. I re bought the aquasee pair I already had, but they do a small version too. I've had a few pairs from there, they are a good service.

tizwozliz · 23/08/2020 13:00

I'd seen that site, @profpoopsnagle but was slightly put off when I saw they're advertising "Speedo Aquapure Female swimming goggles including prescription lenses" when there's no such thing (you can get Speedo Aquapure Female specific goggles but not with prescription lenses), and if you look at the dimensions they're identical to the "Speedo Aquapure swimming goggles including prescription lenses"

I also need to work out what prescription to get if going for ones that don't offer different prescriptions for each eye

@lljkk I got out ten minutes early by accident the other day, got back in again when i noticed no one else was getting out and got close enough to see the clock and squeezed in another 400m :-)

profpoopsnagle · 23/08/2020 14:27

@tizwozliz I have only bought the sutton and then the aquasee from them, but I have been pleased with the service and goggles. I also have slightly different eye prescription, -6.25 and -7, but go for a -7 in both as the difference is not too great, for the small amount of time that I wear them (an optician also agreed).

wapphighwood · 23/08/2020 18:24

Hi all, I went to my local pool for first post lock down lane swim this morning, they have got rid of the medium lane and now have 3 lane slow and fast lanes. I booked a spot in the slow lane, or was quite busy so I had a frustrating swim not as fast as I like, but I don't think I'm fast enough for the fast lane, and don't want to annoy the swimmers in the fast lane. I felt short changed and like half a work out.
So what shall I book for my next swim?
I really want to make swimming my thing and aim to improve and join a club, has any one got any recommendations for a programme to follow?

jewel1968 · 23/08/2020 19:15

@wapphighwood - try the fast lane next time. Why did they remove the medium. I bet one is more medium than fast. Just observe for a while before deciding.

I have no program to recommend but I like to watch videos of swimmers with a coach pointing out how to improve technique. There are loads of apps that do that.

tizwozliz · 23/08/2020 19:32

I think it's really difficult, as when lanes are busy (which in my world is more than 3/4 people) unless you have people who are very well matched for speed then trying to do any sort of set program is impossible.

I have quite low expectations of how much swimming I'll actually get done right now. I've had some sessions where I can't even get 100m done without catching up to people I've given a 40m headstart to. There's not a lot to be done about it though, the range of abilities is just too vast to deal with in 4 lanes. I'm going for quantity not quality, I don't think I've got my heart rate above 100 yet.

TriSkiRun99 · 25/08/2020 08:09

I feel really blessed that my small club is allowing us to book a 20m lane to ourselves for 50mins. I’m allowed to take my 13yr DD with me as she’s a serious swimmer too but not my younger DD who could also rattle off a few lengths. I’ve been able to just swim which has been heaven but I do wonder how long it will last or how profitable it is...

wapphighwood you could try looking at swim fit our big pool has their workout cards on the side. Or I’ve liked watching effortless swimming on you tube for tips. Personally I just mix it up with a few easy lengths warm up, some kicking & arms work using pull buoy float, then a solid block of FC then some sprints and abit of backstroke to cool down. But I have that luxury of not having to worry about other swimmers at the moment. In busy lanes I just swim based on the tempo of the lane or play chase with the slower ones after giving a head start for speed work Grin

BestIsWest · 25/08/2020 09:32

I need varifocal goggles - is there such a thing? I have speedo prescription goggles for distance which are fine but I can’t look at my watch then.

profpoopsnagle · 25/08/2020 11:26

At my swim yesterday, I invented 'Smart Swimming Lanes' like motorways. Each lane has a digital board at the end of the lane.

We had 5 lanes, 2 slow, 1 medium, 2 fast.

3-4 people in each slow and medium, 1 person in each fast. Whilst they were fast, both spent a lot of time recovering at the end of sets at the end of the pool, meaning the lane was underused.

An electronic sign should ask the fast lane to converge to allow for more spread of slow and medium. These can be changed throughout the session as different people swim.

I essentially think that 2 fast lanes at my pool is overkill and need to say that to them!

TriSkiRun99 · 25/08/2020 18:13

Had some crappy work news just before I got in the pool which was my rocket fuel to do my longest pool swim since March 1.5km in 45 mins. Phew it felt good to get that out of my system!
