Does anyone have any tips for swimming with a heavy period?
I tend to not swim which is annoying.
I'm missing out on the early morning lido swim today. Stupid Fathers' Day Angry

TriSkiRun99 · 16/06/2019 21:23

Sea swim today estimated 500m as it was choppy but swam between the buoys. Slowly getting my confidence thanks to some other ladies.

Sorry no advice minnie as I went back to the coil to control mine as I was extremely heavy/flooding no way could I swim 3d a month because of it.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 16/06/2019 22:12

I'm currently trying to move on from head-up breaststroke only, to something a bit more competent looking.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheapish watch or tracker of some sort?
At the minute I'm using all my brainpower to avoid inhaling water and keep my limbs moving in the right direction, i quickly lose count of how many lengths I've done. Or when i started. Or what my name is...

CorrigansDoorKnob · 17/06/2019 02:36

Minnie I used to use a super plus extra tampon and change just before and after swimming, and then kept the swim to

MinnieMountain · 17/06/2019 05:46

Thank you Corrigans, I'll try that today and change it half way through.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 17/06/2019 11:07

Minnie When you're actually in the pool, the water tends to slow the flow and also stop it coming out so you should be OK I think. Great for cramps as well.

I use a cup. Day 1 and 2 are quite heavy, but I've never had a problem. And even if a bit did come out, it would soon be diluted and is not more unhygienic than any other body bits in the pool (best not to think about that too much, eh?!). I guess maybe a large dark towel on the pool side to wrap around you when you get out would give you peace of mind.

It would be a shame to miss out.

I am still swimming twice a week and loving it. Really trying to focus on my leg position at the moment.

Heathen You can get a very basic counter that you just press for each lap. Amazon link
I've haven't used it myself, but it has good reviews. It goes on your finger.

Well I managed 2,000 meters before I lost my nerve. It's better than I've done before.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 18/06/2019 08:50

Well done! That's a long way :D

Well done minnie the longest I’ve done is 1600m, 2k is a great distance.

TriSkiRun99 · 18/06/2019 19:15

Nice Km tonight had pool to myself for most of it, squeezed in between dropping & then picking up my youngest from her club.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 19/06/2019 00:03

Thanks origrights, I thought i might have to leave an abacus at the end of the lane and flick a bead across each time, but that may not look as cool as I'm hoping to be Grin

MissLadyM · 19/06/2019 00:21

Does anyone know of a cap that keeps hair totally dry? I'd go every day if there was! I only go 4 times a week at the moment.

MinnieMountain · 19/06/2019 06:34

I'm no help on the cap but 4 times a week is impressive MissLadyM.

And thank you. Even if I don't complete my sea swim in August, training for it has increased my distances. 2km is my standard swim now.

TriSkiRun99 · 19/06/2019 07:36

misslady I doubt any cap will keep hair dry but would two layered up help? I think mine also gets “damp” from sweat as you lose a lot of heat through your head so put it in plastic and it will be moist.

MissLadyM · 21/06/2019 00:00

Is 4 times a week impressive? Thanks! I'd go every day if it wasn't for the hair faffery

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 21/06/2019 09:08

Yes, 4 times a week is impressive!

I go twice, but also run 3 times a week as well, and maybe throw in a bike ride and some boot camp.

My hair is either wet from swimming, from washing, from sweat or just plain massive from air drying!

Went to a beginners butterfly training session last night it was errr interesting! Ended up doing a km with warm up & cool down. Sea swim today about 500m? was nice but some random really cold patches even in a wetsuit and some sunshine the tide must have bought in some cold bits Smile

BestIsWest · 22/06/2019 00:31

I haven’t swum in the sea for years. I grew upon the coast and learned to swim in the sea but apart from the odd swim abroad haven’t attempted it. Would love to try it again.

Just had a lovely outdoor swim in a hotel pool in Canada until I looked a bit closer and realised it was filthy. Yuk.

TriSkiRun99 · 22/06/2019 17:00

Best I’ve never swam in the sea before until last year I tried putting my face in, it’s been a gradual process but I’m getting there. Today I swam back n forth along a 25m stretch as my eldest came in but my youngest child was on the beach colouring and scaring off the seagulls from getting our breakfast picnic. Lots of barrel jellyfish been spotted locally so I stay close to shore too!

MinnieMountain · 23/06/2019 10:17

I did another 2km in the lido this morning. Swimming outside at 7.30am is special.
It took me 55 minutes, which I think isn't bad for breast stroke. I'll try to keep it up for my 4km swim tomorrow.

TriSkiRun99 · 28/06/2019 13:55

Couple of short sea swims this week and a km in the pool today. Swam over my first big jelly fish this week which really freaked me out, I had to get out. The barrel ones I’ve been told are most harmless but blooming large n scary looking!

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 28/06/2019 14:01

Ooooh, all this talk of lidos and sea swimming.....lucky you.

Just another 1K in the local pool for me. Wasn't too busy and am really loving it at the moment.

I'm arranging some one-to-one coaching with the daughter of a good friend who is a great swimmer.

I haven’t swum for a week now. It’s cold here and I’m being a wuss. My nutty friends went swimming in the ocean today with a tonne of seaweed, plus it’s freezing.

Iamblossom · 29/06/2019 14:53

Hi all,

I swim regularly and have started going with a friend of the same ability on a Monday lunchtime.

We do 60ish lengths in about 35 mins and I was looking for some ideas of drills we can do?

Currently it goes something like:

10 front crawl
10 crawl legs
10 crawl arms
10 fast breaststroke
2 crawl slow 2 sprint repeat twice
Then 2 each of the above.

Can anyone suggest a routine to mix it up a bit? Could do backstroke I guess but I broke my collar bone and some ribs in March and still find that stroke a bit painful and butterfly is out for the same reason.

Thanks in advance.
