Hello all. I'm on week 4 r 2 tomorrow. Which was much much easier than I thought..Luckily the route I took my 2 5 min runs were on flatter/slight decline ground.

I love Laura she's so helpful.

I always say thank you to her out loud when she says I'm doing well.

I've been getting some pain in my right knee though. Anyone had this and got any ideas/tips/exercises to help?

I'm cycling and swimming today instead of running to give it a break

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 27/01/2019 09:58

coldandfrosty, daily clamshells might help your knee pain, which is probably the beginnings of ‘runners knee’ (the most common cause of pain in new runners). I seem to be the ‘clamshell fairy’, recommending them to anyone and everyone but they do really help.

Helpful YouTube video guide of how to do them

Twiglet2353 · 27/01/2019 10:22

W4R1 completed this morning. At the time I hated every minute of it. Now I feel quite positive about it.

Bloody endorphins.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 27/01/2019 17:41

Well done Twiglet.

I ran two sessions back to back this morning, W2R3 & W3R1. All fine but I do live on a hill and in a generally hilly area, so it was a bit tough in one or two sections where I was at the end of a ‘run’ session on a particularly steep bit of track. It’s so hilly that my Fitbit registered 41 floors during the run!

Fiddie · 27/01/2019 17:43

I did wk3 r3 today. It was ok but my legs were quite achy afterwards.

Macs18 · 27/01/2019 18:13

I ran w3 run 3 today. Longest I've ever stuck at it and looking forward to getting stuck into week 4. Found the first 3 minute run quite tough today, but started it on a hill, last run was much easier.

Violetroselily · 27/01/2019 20:02

Just finished W4R1 and I'm still alive. I genuinely can't believe I ran for 5 minutes, twice.

Hope everyone has a good week

Coldandfrosty · 27/01/2019 22:26

don thank you i will try that. I'm resting it for now.

Think I'm going to get some new trainers too my current ones are rather old and prob not helping no idea where to start looking though/what type

Coldandfrosty · 27/01/2019 22:27

violet well done. That's how I felt after w4r1 too. Was so shocked I ran for 16 min

Fiddie · 27/01/2019 23:52

Violet I'm doing that on Tuesday, feel a bit worried but will try and do it.

pigletpie2177 · 28/01/2019 00:04

Just done week 4 run 1 and struggled - did slow down to walk briefly on the first 5 minute run (about 3 minutes in) but generally did ok. Stamina is definitely improving as each week I've felt like that was as much as I could have done. Interested to see how I get on over the next 5 weeks - currently feel like 30 minutes of running is the impossible dream!

timetomoveon · 28/01/2019 08:37

I did w4r1 this morning too. Ooofff. That was hard. But I did it. Can’t belive I did 16 mins of running. The last 5 mins was brutal but I just kept going. Michael was spurring me on with the talk as to how this was going to improve my fitness.
I’m hoping it will be a bit easier on Wednesday.
My legs have definitely felt it as the day has gone on (it’s afternoon where I am).

pigletpie2177 · 28/01/2019 09:23

I used Sanjeev for the first time - I might try Michael on Wednesday for my next run. He's the only one I've not used so far. I think Laura might be my favourite but I'm going to keep changing as I used Sarah Millican for the first few and found it annoying that it was the exact same recording 🙈

timetomoveon · 28/01/2019 09:37

I like Michael. I like that I’m being coached by an Olympian Grin

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/01/2019 09:38

coldandfrosty, re trainers, go for gait analysis and fitting at a proper sports / running shop (not a big ‘leisure’ sports place like JD). They’ll advise you on what type of footfall you have (you have to jog on a treadmill for a short while so they can record the way your foot makes contact with the ground) and what type of support is best for you. They’ll get you to try different types of shoe and try again on the treadmill to see how it feels and how it looks on the gait test.

The test will probably cost you about £10-£20, you’ll get that off the cost of a pair of shoes if you chose to buy a pair of trainers from them. Or you can make a note of the make and model of trainers you like best and buy last years colours online for less.

Violetroselily · 28/01/2019 11:27

Michael is wonderful, I'm so glad I swapped to him.

Coldandfrosty · 28/01/2019 11:56

don thanks so much. I think I will do that. As I don't want to cause myself more injuries if there is a way I can possibly help myself not to e.g. with trainers

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/01/2019 12:44

@TitsalinaBumsquash, how are you getting on? Did you re run w2 or go straight through?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 28/01/2019 13:49

I went straight through, the end of week 3 was surprisingly easy. I will do W4R1 tomorrow, I'm having a lazy day today.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/01/2019 15:07

Wooo! Go you. Well done Smile

Whitelisbon · 28/01/2019 20:54

Can I join in please?
I did w1r1 this morning, and am totally amazed that I didn't die during it, as I thought I might. Halfway through i was ready for throwing in the towel, but managed to finish, just!
Felt like a total idiot wheezing my way round the park while a man jogged effortlessly past me multiple times.
What do people wear to run at this time of year? I put my coat on this morning (it was -4 at 6.15am when I left), but found it awkward, but I'd have got hypothermia without it. And my water bottle kept bouncing around in my pocket!

Fiddie · 28/01/2019 21:28

Has anyone got any tips for wk4 r1? I'm doing it tomorrow and although I want to it seems like a big jump.

Thank you.

Fiddie · 28/01/2019 21:29

@Whitelisbon I've joined a really cheap gym so can't help with clothes.

Piebeansandchips · 28/01/2019 21:31

W4R1 done today. I wasn't paying attention when Sarah gave the synopsis of what was to come. Didn't expect the last 5 minute run - oops. I blame the fact it was 6am and fecking freezing outside. That's another run done tho - whoop. Think I'll need to change from Sarah, might try Michael. Well done to everyone that's managing to do your runs!

Violetroselily · 28/01/2019 22:33

@fiddie I was worried that it seemed too big a jump but I honestly think it sounds/reads worse than it is. 5 minutes feels like a long time but I didn't find it too difficult, and I'm hugely overweight and unfit.

Just make sure you don't go too fast - I find it easier to keep my pace slower when I know it's a few minutes of running. In the first week I was going way too fast for the 90 second runs and I struggled, but now I'm much more conscious of keeping it slow

Good luck
