Anyone fancy doing a triathlon training thread? Sprint or Olympic or GOTri or Ironman or whatever? Compare training, schedules, competitions and the mega kit fest that is triathlon.

There have been a couple of threads in the last year or two but they’ve dropped off the radar. Please join me! Smile

I’ve also been listening to the TriPod bbc podcast which has been good with lots of beginners tips Smile

Igottastartthinkingbee · 28/05/2019 22:31

Hello ritmo take your time, loads of tri events throughout the year. Hope you get another event booked in soon. My first year or two of triathlon I was breaststroking all the way! There always is at every event I’ve done since so you won’t be the odd one out.

Eek less than two weeks to my second ever Olympic distance. I’m going to do one more big lake swim, and one more big brick. Then a few short bits in the week before. I feel like I’m more ready than this time last year but looking at last years times I can’t believe I’m going to beat them 😂 how can I be fitter, more experienced but slower?!?! Haha!!! I’m hopeful that adrenaline will have a massive effect!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and support. Guess what.... I had a last minute change of heart and I DID IT!!!! Grin
Got there with just a few mins to spare, having done no prep and having grabbed my kit in a panic. Was shaking with nerves and shyness but got chatting to some other first-timers and a couple of women from my running club. Plus my bf turned up in full tri-suit and did it with me!!!
I loved it! My swim was a bit slower than hoped due to a slow swimmer in my lane not allowing me to overtake him. My transition was v quick & problem-free. My run was tough as I blistered horribly by 1km and feet were pouring with blood. But it was idyllic out on the hills with stunning scenery and weather and not a soul in sight apart from baby lambs. My final 2km were fast (for me) at about 04:40/km.
Results-wise I didn’t do great. Came 30th out of 37. But my biggest achievement was having got over my nerves and gone for it!!!

I know it’s just a little aquathlon but I’m pleased I’ve got it under my belt and will be hoping to repeat it at the next one in a fortnight’s time.

Thanks everyone for your moral support. And good luck to everyone with your own training!! Flowers

TriSkiRun99 · 29/05/2019 14:28

That’s brilliant RitmoRatmo well done.

RitmoRatmo · 29/05/2019 14:32

Thanks TriSkiRun ! Grin

How’s your training going? And I’m interested to hear about that podcast you mentioned. Is it available on the iPlayer app thingy? I’m reading a good book at the mo called ‘Run, Ride, Sink or Swim’ by Lucy Fry. I recommend it.

reallyneedmoresleep · 29/05/2019 19:21

Ohgodohgodohgod!! Blenheim palace triathlon this weekend. It’s only a sprint but I haven’t trained enough, haven’t dropped that extra stone and feel a bit sick at the very thought of it all.
Send positive messages of encouragement please!!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 29/05/2019 20:05

It will be fine!!! Have you really not trained enough or have you just not trained enough to post a pb? As long as you’re fit enough to get round just go out and enjoy it! And adrenaline always adds a bit of speed anyway Smile

Contemplating whether i should try and complete the challenge i set myself - sprint tri by 30, olympic by 40, ironman by 50. I managed the sprint tri but i'm running out of time for the next one as i turn 40 early in the season next year

Any recommendations for olympic distance events later in the season?

Igottastartthinkingbee · 29/05/2019 20:31

Whereabouts tizwozliz?

OP posts:
tizwozliz · 29/05/2019 20:53

I'm in the midlands but don't mind travelling

Igottastartthinkingbee · 29/05/2019 21:34

There’s an Olympic distance at Allerthorpe near York 4th August.

reallyneedmoresleep · 30/05/2019 07:41

I have trained enough to get round but I think I’m going to struggle, especially with the swim - it’s been so cold this year!
Tizwozliz, try Woburn Abbey or Hever Castle in September

TriSkiRun99 · 30/05/2019 08:05

Make it a 40th holiday excuse tiz are there some nice barmy ones abroad next year in Spring?

sleep your be fine, I felt exactly the same a couple of weeks ago so set myself 3 goals, 1st to finish (ideally not last), 2nd was a time goal I knew I could do and 3rd was a “best” time for me. I nearly hit my “best time” I only missed it by 90secs and lost those getting held up in roadworks on the bike (traffic lights arrhhh!) and a shit swim. Adrenaline got me round. Good luck

reallyneedmoresleep · 30/05/2019 09:07

I have decided ( in my wisdom) that it’s really hard to think about a triathlon Pb because the courses vary so much - different elevation, different distances, varied routes to transition, size of transition, number of people in the way etc etc.
I haven’t done this triathlon before, so as long as I finish, it will be a Pb. Hurrah

tizwozliz · 30/05/2019 18:23

I've already got other 40th birthday holiday plans otherwise that would be a great idea

Igottastartthinkingbee · 30/05/2019 23:06

You are wise really, I’ve only ever bettered a previous time on the same course and distance once 😂

I’m all for once and once only PBs! Hope you enjoy your weekend, Blenheim looks like a corker.

How was Blenheim? I was just reading that Jo Whiley was there doing her first tri.

How’s the nerves for everyone racing next weekend? I’m getting butterflies now 😬

We have two new European champions in triathlon and it’s barely been mentioned in the news. Alistair Brownlee and Beth Potter both won this weekend. Football and boxing had taken over the sports news 😠

Really nervous! Practiced changing inner tubes yesterday- what a faff that is.

Need to swim in a lake this week...

reallyneedmoresleep · 04/06/2019 12:39

Blenheim was beautiful but sooooo hot! My swim was awful; just couldn’t do more than about 20 strokes of crawl consecutively without switching to breaststroke. The bike was ok - all around the palace grounds so no cars but very busy in places with a couple of nasty crashes ( not me thankfully). My best bit was the run although it was hard to keep plodding on in 27 degree heat.
Would definitely do it again - hopefully with more bike training under my belt and more conviction in my swimming ability. I got better as the swim went on - just need that to kick in earlier!
My legs are so sore. I could hardly walk yesterday.
Royal Windsor sprint tri in less than 2 weeks; apparently Johnny Wilkinson will be there. I’d put more effort in to catch up with him!
What’s happening this weekend Nate?

Lifeisabeach · 05/06/2019 11:18

Well done for completing Blenheim really - it was hot at the weekend!

Are you feeling ready for Leeds bee? Some of my friends from tri club are going up to do it, it sounds great.

Nate have you done your lake swim now?

I'm feeling really nervous too! I just want to get on with it now - this week of not doing much training and stressing about kit and packing etc is really dragging. I panic-bought some salt tablets on amazon last night - never used them before but decided I should have them just in case!

I'm trying to just focus on getting to that finish line! At least the weather looks favourable - for me anyway. My biggest fear was it being 30 deg like it has the last couple of years. My phone is saying sunny intervals and 17 degrees.

Nateismine · 05/06/2019 11:38

Life Just got back from my one and only lake swim. I'm glad I did it as I wasn't totally comfortable. Had to sight every 6 strokes which is a pain- didn't realise how off course you go without sighting. Water temp was 18 which was really nice. Not sure of Stafford lake temp?
Have no idea where to seed myself in the rolling swim start. Not sure if to hang back a bit to maybe get more space to swim, but then I may need to overtake???
I'm so so nervous. Bike is st the mechanics having a new cassette fittedShock.
What have you got planned for the next few days?

Nateismine · 05/06/2019 11:39

Really- well done at Blenheim. Half Ironman next year?

Lifeisabeach · 05/06/2019 12:06

Nate - glad you got the swim in. Yeah it's crazy how off course you can go when you don't have the black lines to follow. I hope the swim course is clearly marked with big buoys as I'm pretty rubbish at sighting.

My worry about the swim is the start - I watched some videos on youtube of last year's race and you just jump straight in off the pontoon, so no acclimatisation. I usually get in, let the water flush through my suit, splash my face a bit etc. But there will be none of that, so I'm worried I'll panic from the cold. Someone on facebook said the water temp was 16.5 deg last weekend. Not sure where to seed myself either, as you say, maybe further back is better but then will people get in the way?

What have you decided about clothing? I'm thinking I'll put a bike top on as it looks quite cool early on.

I did a lake swim on Sunday, easy 5k Monday and was meant to go out on my bike for 45 mins yesterday but it had been so wet here that I went on the turbo instead. I think I'm resting today, maybe a 5k run tomorrow and then rest Fri and Sat. But would kind of like to do an outside ride before the day,, so maybe Fri evening. How about you?

I'm going to start packing tomorrow but I'm getting so stressed about what should be in each bag, I keep adding to my lists! My bags are going to be bulging full!

Nateismine · 05/06/2019 12:56

Goes off to watch you tube videos....

Igottastartthinkingbee · 05/06/2019 14:57

It’s a bit late for me to be looking at Ocean Walker swimming technique isn’t it 😂.....yes feeling ready for Leeds but not sure if I’m ready enough to beat last years time. I’ll be happy with a faster swim if nothing else. But I haven’t shown much in training so I’m hoping that adrenaline speeds me up a bit! One last easy 10k run last night and a bit of yoga this week and I’m done. Still feel nervous though, can’t wait to get started now.

Well done one completing a hot Blenheim really so much harder in the heat!

Nate and life looking forward to hearing how you get on! I’m also wondering about lake temps, loads of rain up here yesterday, I’m not worried about it being 15-16c but if it’s much lower than that I find swimming so much harder. Just what I don’t need! Plus my hands will be numb when I get out so I’ll struggle with my wetsuit. Must stop worrying about things I can’t control!!!!!
