Anyone fancy doing a triathlon training thread? Sprint or Olympic or GOTri or Ironman or whatever? Compare training, schedules, competitions and the mega kit fest that is triathlon.

There have been a couple of threads in the last year or two but they’ve dropped off the radar. Please join me! Smile

Good luck bee I feel the same, I’m doing a short Tri on Sunday mainly because my DD wanted to do the kids one so I signed up to it. It’s one I’ve done before (actually my first ever Tri) so I know the course but it didn’t stop me waking up at 5am this morning running through all the transitions in my head 🙈. Hopefully Sunday will go smoothly for both of us.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 14/09/2019 09:55

Haha! Yes tomorrow’s tri was also my first ever one. And I keep forgetting that’s what I’m doing tomorrow, can you tell I haven’t really been focussing on it 😂 Good luck!

My DD and have just laid all our kit out and had a transition run through Grin she has her 1st road bike to try out as she’s only been on it a couple of times. So we are off to the park now for a practice ride.

TriSkiRun99 · 15/09/2019 15:03

We did it! Knocked 3mins off last years time as everything went well especially my swim as I panicked in the last one so this one was all about keeping calm & smooth. My DD enjoyed hers too. Phew not thinking about another one ..for at least 6mths 😂signed up for a Feb HM instead. Grin

Igottastartthinkingbee · 16/09/2019 13:40

Well done! 3 mins off is great! I really enjoyed my tri yesterday too, I hadn’t really trained much for it and still did it in about the same time as last year. And it’s given me my mojo back, I really didn’t enjoy my Olympic distance this year and was thinking I should jack it all in. But yesterday was great! So sprints it is for a while, might tackle the Olympic again next year or just do the sprint version.

Well done bee. I changed my transition and gained over a min Grin went no socks and wore 2bras instead of faffing with a bra band for the run - my big boobs need a lot of support! Improved my swim by over a min and my run by 1min (I had been injured last year so my run was weak). Really pleased to be making progress on the swimming though as that’s taken the longest to improve. Just need to lose 2stone and I’ll fly on the run 😂

Not sure what to do next year as both kids now want to do the kids Tri in April, but I’m going to focus back on running for a HM again.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 18/09/2019 10:19

Oh good! It takes a while to figure out what works for you, which kit do you really need and what can you stop faffing with in transition. It’s the one part you can save time without having to be any fitter!!

Have fun just running 😂 I did a HM in July and I cannot tell you how much I loved just running for a while! I also spent a lot of the half marathon chatting to a fellow tri friend about how much we’d enjoyed not triathloning 🤣

Helllooo! Is anyone around? After much deliberation I have signed up for IM UK on 12th July! Training has already started and I’m a bit apprehensive about how I’ll fit it all in already, and I’m only in the base phase. My OH is doing it too so we’ll be tag team parenting again like last year. Does anyone else have any races planned this year?

Nateismine · 03/01/2020 17:33

Hi Life. I'm back on it too! On week 6 of a 30 week plan leading up to The Lakesman (full distance 😬😬😬)

Well done for having the cojones to sign up for the hilly one! Are you following a plan?

Lifeisabeach · 03/01/2020 20:01

Hi nate good to see you back here. You decided against an IM abroad then? I really wanted to do Copenhagen, but cost and childcare meant it had to be a UK one. I’m terrified of the Bolton bike course, 9000ft of climbing - I need to seriously work on my bike!

I’ve heard Lakesman is a fab event, when is it?

OH and I are on week 3 of the Fink intermediate plan. The hours are ramping up already and I might switch to the just finish as it’s more realistic time-wise. But just seeing how it goes for now and trying to stick to the plan.

Would love to hear how you get on with training Smile

Nateismine · 03/01/2020 21:17

So, I opted for Lakesman just to save money- I'll still call myself an Ironman if I finish!
I'm on week 6 of the Fink Intermediate plan- 9 hrs this week. It's quite full on for me already. And am finding it's taking over my life again....
Did my first 2hr outdoor bike today and felt really tired- have lost so much fitness after last year.
I thought about Bolton but chickened out as I hate hills!
The Lakesman is June 21st.
My long term plan is Ironman Wales 2021 and then retire!
Are you doing any other events?

Lifeisabeach · 03/01/2020 21:41

Oh yes you’ll definitely still be an Ironman!
You’re 3 weeks ahead of me then on the Fink plan. I looked at the build phase and it goes to 3 swims a week I think? I won’t be able to manage that, will have to stick with 2 plus some lake swims once it warms up a bit!

I keep hoping they might change the Bolton bike course to reduce the elevation a bit, probably not going to happen though! If my run was stronger I could just focus on the bike, but I really need to work on my run too.

No other tris planned at the moment. Ideally I’d do a half IM but I don’t think funds will stretch that far. I’ve got a couple of running races booked and a half marathon in May, but that’s it.

Definitely taking over my life too, I am an Ironman bore - can think and talk about little else!

TriSkiRun99 · 04/01/2020 11:38

Wow you guys are certainly taking on some big Tri challenges well done. I’ve not booked anything except a HM run and my first marathon in May. I did enjoy my sprint Tri last year but found the nerves in the build up debilitating, so may just keep up the swim, running and cycling and see if anything takes my fancy after May.

Racmactac · 23/01/2020 21:17

Hey. Is this thread still active ?

I did my first tri last year with bugger all training and I've just signed up for 3 this year.

Now I need a training plan. Are there any good apps?

TriSkiRun99 · 24/01/2020 15:47

People dip in and out racmactac I cant help with training plans though as I just keep running 3-4x a week and swim 1-2x a week then fit in odd cycle. I tend to pick up the cycling more from March onwards but I’m not aiming at any Tris yet this year, just got two running things lined up at moment. I’m sure others will be along to advise later.

Lifeisabeach · 26/01/2020 13:59

I don’t know of any apps, but I have a book called Ironfit - Triathlon Training for Women by Melanie and Don Fink, that contains lots of info and training plans for sprint, Olympic, half and full iron distance.

How are you getting on Nateismine? I’ve just finished week 6 of the Fink plan, which was 9 hours of training. I’m tired! And it’s 10 hours next week Shock

Racmactac · 28/01/2020 21:35

Ok on recommendation I have bought fink triathlon book but not sure on what this means

#20_opt.

Anyone help?

Lifeisabeach · 29/01/2020 11:42

Racmactac the #20 is one of the swim workouts - they are listed before the training plans I think. And "opt" means it's an optional workout that you can add if you want to or have time - or if swimming is your weakest discipline. The optional ones are usually on what would otherwise be a rest day.

Racmactac · 29/01/2020 12:36

@Lifeisabeach
Thank you

TriSkiRun99 · 31/01/2020 14:08

Didn’t think I’d do a Tri this year but have now just signed up to my first open water one in the summer. I’m not very confident at all sea swimming so this will be a big challenge! But hopefully motivate me to keep my fitness going through August which I’m normally crap at as don’t like heat and have more days off work due to childcare needs.

mylittlefidget · 30/05/2020 06:44

Triathlon people- is anyone doing the ironman vr9? Did my run 30mins early last night so it didn't count and I'll need to do another one this morning.... 🙄😀. It would be good to have some company, if anyone else is doing it.

TriSkiRun99 · 31/05/2020 20:30

Im not doing Ironman but I do have 13wks to my Sept Tri if it’s not cancelled so made the most of today with an early short seaswim (1st with no wetsuit this season), cycled there and took longer cycle home. But no way am I ready to jump off the bike and run yet.... been nursing running injury since Feb 🙄slowly building distances back up but limiting myself to 2runs a week whilst I do.

Do you still have a Tri booked in?

mylittlefidget · 31/05/2020 20:53

@triskirun99 seaswim sounds lovely, I'm jealous! :-) I hope your running injury resolves by September! It would have been the Staffordshire 70.3 next weekend, that's why I really wanted to do the 70.3 VR this weekend. And it was actually quite good fun.

TriSkiRun99 · 03/06/2020 09:01

Hope the VR Tri went ok fidget. I’m lucky to live 2miles from the beach and we bought one of those 10ft paddling pools 3wks ago for the garden which has been fun. I’ve built up to 15mins of cold swimming in it Smile I can now get in without my wetsuit. We got it for the kids but as I’m short I’ve done more swimming in it than the kids off the bungy tied to a tree Grin

mylittlefidget · 03/06/2020 21:16

Triskirun99, your pool sounds amazing, what a good idea!
Which one did you get? I've booked my first lake swim for tomorrow night, it'll be cold...
