Just that, how much exercise do you do a week? I definitely don’t do enough but just wondered how much exercise people really do around children/work etc?

I walk to/from work (+ nursery) every day which is 4 miles in total. I run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for an hour and Sundays for two hours. I cycle on Fridays for 2 hours and I swim for 1 hour twice a week.

piglet81 · 04/05/2018 10:10

Nowhere near enough. I swim 30 lengths a couple of times a week, and occasionally go to the gym at the weekend. I do walk a reasonable amount as we don't drive, and I try not to use lifts at work/out and about unless I've got DS in the buggy.

PetaO · 04/05/2018 10:24

I do the Tracy Anderson Method. A mat based, pilates-type workout for an hour 5 days a week, and then Dance Cardio for 30minutes about 4 times a week. When we're not in the manic period at work I sub in a couple of 45 minute runs a week.
I don't walk a lot for my new job, which is annoying.

BlueChampagne · 04/05/2018 13:08

Full time job and 2 kids: I run 15-20 miles/week, plus 1-2 hours gardening, and cycling when I can (but usually with kids so not sure if it counts).

carrie74 · 04/05/2018 23:54

I work 4 days and my children are a bit older (10 and 12). I tend to do a PT session on my day off, a yoga class one evening a week, 1 circuits class a week, and then I'll also try to fit in a weights session at home or a jog. I have an Apple Watch that 'expects'me to complete 30 mins of exercise a day and burn 450 calories when active (elevated heart rate), and that certainly focuses the mind! It's really only now they're a bit older that I can fit so much in - they can be left home alone for short periods, and often have retreated to screen time which gives me time to work out at home.

I never used to be like that, I've completely retrained my mind and get a bit angsty if I can't get my 'stats' done, or if I miss a workout.

multivac · 05/05/2018 00:02

I run every day - adding up to about 25 miles per week. That's it, apart from the normal stuff that's involved with living rurally and working full time, with two active teenagers.

PT once a week and twice a week at the gym doing a prescribed programme. Walk 45 mins a day in my lunch hour. Generally hit 10000 steps

EinsteinsArousedSausagesHCB · 05/05/2018 00:08

Approx. 7hrs a week, sometimes slightly more. I also walk everywhere.

clary · 05/05/2018 00:13

I swim a mile before work 3-4 times a week (pool opens at 7am; swim then head to work 8am).

Cycle to work (15 mins) on days I don't swim; run most days, between 4-10k, so 20-55 mins, sometime before work (not if I'm swimming tho!) sometimes in the evening eg when out at DC activity. My kids are all teens tho so don't need much managing. I work FT, 8.30-5 ish.

Stripybeachbag · 05/05/2018 00:15

In the interests of balance, I do nothing.

I aim to exercise at least twice a week, but am so knackered after work that most weeks I find myself at the end having done nothing. I am not proud of it, but gobsmacked by how people can find the time and energy.

Sevendown · 05/05/2018 00:24

I don’t think I could do the levels of exercise above even if I didn’t work or have dcs!

I assume these people must be very fit -and slim-

I try to do 3000 steps a day and manage that most days.

Sometimes we go swimming or on a couple of miles walk as a family.

I’m too exhausted after work do to do anything other than slump.

carrie74 · 05/05/2018 09:23

Doing exercise regularly definitely gives me more energy, and if I don't do anything I start to get a bit twitchy with excess energy. I seriously never used to feel like this though, I would always be first to stay on the sofa watching telly or curled up with a book.

And now as I get older, the side effects on keeping my body in shape is a plus.

carrie74 · 05/05/2018 09:24

But to add, my job is very sedentary, so if I had a more physical job perhaps I'd get enough from that. But I'm just in meetings / staring at a screen most days.

DuckEgg86 · 05/05/2018 09:30

From Livestrong on steps : Walking and Activity Levels

Researchers at Arizona State University have established baseline activity levels based on the number of steps taken each day. People who take fewer than 5,000 steps are considered to be sedentary or inactive. Those who take 5,000 to 7,499 steps daily have a low active lifestyle. Somewhat active people usually take 7,500 to 9,999 steps per day. People considered to be active take 10,000 or more steps per day.

On the days I don’t exercise (4 of out of 7) I must try to do 10000 steps.

pinkhorse · 05/05/2018 09:36

I have an 8 year old and work part time. I walk 2.5 miles on the school run every day, cycle to work 12 miles every day. Either in my lunch hour or after work I either lift weights, cycle, run or do HIIT 6 days a week

Iamblossom · 05/05/2018 09:52

I try and do this most weeks:

2 x 10km runs
2 x 30 minute sessions on XTrainer in gym, then weights and core

I also walk my dog for about an hour 5ish times a week, puppy minder does other two days.

My job is very sedentary so I have to do this amount of exercise to stay fit.

I am slim, but I have to work hard at it, this much exercise is not enough on it's own to stay slim, I also have to watch everything I eat and do one fast day a week to maintain my weight (not lose - to lose I would have to do 2 fast days)

I am 43, work full time (but from home some days) and have two DC 13 and 11. Not having a school run any more as they get the bus, helps enormously, as I now have two hours of my day back.

Adversecamber22 · 05/05/2018 10:03

I spent years working FT, I used to make sure I took my lunch hour and would go for a brisk walk. There was also a time I cycled to work which was a twelve mile round trip. I also did various dance or exercise classes over the years.

I worked by the sea for a couple of years and would run down to the beach which was literally two minutes away and go for a swim in the sea in my lunch hour sometimes. I had very long straight hair that I wore in plaits that I pinned up round my head Scandinavian style so sorting out hair was no issue on my return.

Aebj · 05/05/2018 10:14

I have two ds aged 14 and 12.
I work anywhere between 4 and 60 hours a fortnight. One of my jobs is crèche work/ playgroup based so always on my feet!!
The other job is as a cleaner at an adventure park. I can walk 20km in one shift.
I try and do 5 hours of boot camp a week. Sometimes I only get to do 3 due to start times of work.
Ds 1 is very active so I’m forever running around for him. Ds 2 is austic and has a pacemaker so unable to do contact sport. So we swim a lot!!!! It’s one thing he likes!!
I’m not skinny as I like cake😂😂

Frosty66612 · 05/05/2018 10:20

I try and do 6000 steps per day and I also do a HIIT class every week and i’ll go for a long 2-3 hour walk once a week too. I have an exercise bike at home and some weeks I’ll go on it every day for 25 mins, and other weeks it doesn’t get touched depending on how busy I am

lljkk · 05/05/2018 10:58

50% of the population do less than 10 minutes walking per day (or equivalent in all activities). 40% of adults age 40-60yo do less than the equivalent of 10 minutes brisk walk a month. 80% of the popn do less than 12x30 minute physical-activity sessions per month. The amount folk do is strongly linked to education & socio-economic status, though (higher do more activity). Most people do feck all, basically.

Argeles · 05/05/2018 11:13

My weekday walk back and forth to nursery is 4 miles in total (20 miles per week).

Aside from this, I do more walking on an ad hoc basis throughout the week. I have two young children and I’m a student too. I do all of the cooking and domestic tasks (except taking out the bins), exclusively breastfeed my baby 10 million times per day. I should be exercising more, but I just can’t find the time - not even my helpful back strengthening exercises.

Parker231 · 05/05/2018 11:49

DH and I do a run twice a week but we should probably try and vary the length and location to try and make it more challenging. I go to a PT two or three times a week - I’ve been going for years and it’s great because I’m not very motivated left to myself. Most days I walk to work- takes about half an hour along London streets - I find it a nice start to the day.

wizzywig · 05/05/2018 11:53

Oh i thought i was doing ok with 2 gym classes a week

noodlmcdoodl · 05/05/2018 13:04

I work part time and have a 16 month old.

I cycle commute to and from work (half hour each way, but tend to extend it one way up to 2 hours). Including cycle commutes I ride 5 or 6 days a week. I average about 10 hours a week. I tend to fit my rides in early morning or evening so it works around childcare.

Despite not having a car I do very little walking... maybe 2,000 steps a day max. That doesn’t bother me and I don’t plan to change that (healthy weight, blood pressure, fat levels etc).... plus too much walking/ time on feet plays merry hell with my various prolapses.

My only concern is a lack of weight bearing exercise to help with bone density. I used to run and weight train but can’t now due to aforementioned collection of prolapses since giving birth.

I should add I’ve not always been fit or a healthy weight: it all changed when I discovered cycling. I’ve been cycling 10 years and couldn’t ever imagine a life without it, or being unfit and/ or overweight again.
