Just that, how much exercise do you do a week? I definitely don’t do enough but just wondered how much exercise people really do around children/work etc?

OP posts:
Daisy03 · 05/05/2018 20:09

I do heavy weightlifting sessions 3 times a week, one circuits class, try to swim a mile, and try to fit in up to 3 sessions of yoga.
Also walk around 12000 average steps a day

rainbowfudgee · 05/05/2018 20:15

Saturday morning: fast 3k run. Monday evening: long 6k run. 3 x a week: 1 hour gentle walk for school drop off. Usually a swim or a yoga class. 30 mins teaching PE at work involving running about. OK I think

beela · 05/05/2018 20:21

Oh yes I forgot my weekly yoga session too. I think I'm doing OK.

But I also think op is doing OK. Any exercise is better than none. I also think that the people who click and comment on a thread like this are not necessarily going to be representative of everyone.

Johnnycomelately1 · 06/05/2018 01:33

Firstly, OP, remember that this thread will probably have a positive bias as unless it made it into active, most posters will only have seen it if they're browsing the exercise topic.

I do 4 free weights/ conditioning sessions, 1 yoga class and run about 20k on trail. I have school aged kids and work 25 hours flexibly which makes this doable. I normally do less gym work and more running but I had a double bunion correction late last year so I'm building back up. I don't do a huge amount of incidental exercise and I do a desk job but I do walk back from work most days which is about 1km.

Tattybear16 · 06/05/2018 02:03

Went from doing nothing, then after a health scare I now do 1 Zumba class; 1 clubbersize class; 4 intensive Latin dance classes every week Monday through to Sunday, and walk between 4 & 8km very day. I’m 51. I feel a lot better since I’ve started doing more. Once I got over the initial needing to drag myself out, I find I now look forward to it, and if I miss a class then I’m kind of miserable.

CountFosco · 06/05/2018 09:18

but run around after my 7 month old and keep on top of the house or walk with him in his pushchair every day!

If you've only got a 7 month old I'm impressed you are doing any formal exercise at all. I swam and did yoga before kids (and we use to go walking at the weekends) and through my first pregnancy. I then did nothing for years (although my steps would have been fine as I walked all over town), we had our 3DC close together so as soon as I'd recovered from one pregnancy I was pregnant with the next. Didn't go swimming until DC3 was 2 then built up to daily exercise over a year.

ivykaty44 · 06/05/2018 09:25

At present I’m averaging 80 miles per week Cycling - want that to be over 200 through the summer

I walk to work or cycle, of working further away from home

Gym in the winter before work, as I find it’s easier before than after work

Babybearsporij · 06/05/2018 13:11

I do something every day. It varies, but usually is a mix between:

running
kettlebells
weights / strength
yoga
brisk walking
swimming

I'd like to get into cycling.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 06/05/2018 13:21

I aim to exercise 5 days a week.
Usually 2 cardio classes (Body Combat, Zumba)
2 Pilates classes
1 hour of weights or Body Pump

I work full time but my daughter is 17 so needs little input. I usually drop her at dance class/friend’s house on an evening then straight to the gym.
By Friday night I am absolutely dead though, after five 5.30am starts and 4 nights at the gym.
If I don’t stick to it I feel like shit. My mental health really suffers. I used to get frequent panic attacks and anxiety but this has really improved since I joined the gym 2 years ago.

Heismyopendoor · 06/05/2018 15:02

Up until a month ago I was doing pretty much nothing, swimming once a week.

Now I’m working out six days a week. I’ve been doing 20-30 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of weights and still doing the swimming once a week.

Sevendown · 07/05/2018 10:01

I don’t even know what some of the jargon on this thread means!

3000 steps is an active day to me not a lazy day.

I think once you’re obese exercise is so much harder because it’s so exhausting lugging all this extra weight around.

My extra weight is like carrying 2 toddlers everywhere!

Since the start of the year I have got more active but it’s gentle stuff like walking, yoga, cycling, swimming.

So I only burn 1700 cals pd therefore gain weight easily making the cycle continue!

ErictheGuineaPig · 07/05/2018 10:11

I did nothing when my kids were the ages yours is op. In fact I didn't start exercising until my late 30s. I did couch25k and built up from there to 3 runs a week and 2 or 3 gym sessions a week. Don't beat yourself up, just try and build up slowly and fit in what you can. Like others have said, I feel a lot better for exercising. I am less tired than I used to be. I haven't lost weight though because I love to eat.

BalloonFlowers · 07/05/2018 10:16

I aim for 90 mins of movement every day.
If this is just walking, that's around 10,000 steps.
I aim to swim or run twice a week - usually only 30 mins each time.
It's probably not enough, but it's too hot (currently 41C) to go outside for much of the year, and I hate going to the gym. Must find an "at home" work out I can stick to.

PoisonousSmurf · 07/05/2018 10:16

My work day is physical anyway. I do six hours of cleaning a day (with one hour for lunch). This I do for three days. Then I do five hours of gardening for clients (usually weeding, digging and moving earth around with a wheelbarrow).
Then three times a week I go to a weights and Tabata training class for an hour. Finish at 9.30pm.
And then Friday is my day off, where I'll do walking or do a little running.
Weekends...I try to do as little as possible Grin

Noboozeforme · 07/05/2018 11:03

I.cant run anymore (MS) but.in a bid to stay strong (and keep my balance) I do plaities and yoga once a week (each). I also brisk walk 30 minutes a day.

I'd like to do some weight training but getting too hot makes the MS worse.

Tbh before getting MS last year I did no exercise at all (although have been heavily into running in the past).. the MS caused epllepsy and so I lost my licence .. so all the walking I do has come from that .. and is a blessing in disguise really !

Astrabees · 10/05/2018 11:47

1 x body balance, 1 x weightlifting class, 1 x spin class and 1 x bootcamp a week, plus a riding lesson. On top of the formal stuff I do 4 x 20 minutes yoga on the mornings I'm not going to a class and one bike ride or long walk. I feel quite good on this though as I'm 62 suffer a bit with muscle stiffness.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 10/05/2018 11:49

30-60 minute dog walk every day (and I walk fast)
4-5 1hr yoga classes a week

Could definitely do more, but this leaves me feeling quite well and is manageable for me.

Baubletrouble43 · 10/05/2018 11:52

I love you stripybeachbag

UrgentScurryfunge · 10/05/2018 13:27

I tend to do something 5-6 days a week. Running/ circuits/ buggy fit/ yoga. Sometimes other things like walking/ swimming/ cycling.

I'm lucky that there's a lot of community facilities within a 5-10 minute walk so have little temptation to use the car for very short journeys. I do lots of little bursts of walking up and down the road which to add up to a useful level of baseline activity.

If I don't exercise, I get insomnia within days and start getting really twitchy.

TriHard27 · 10/05/2018 13:46

I do a lot but am training for an event and work part time so manage to fit it all in.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 10/05/2018 21:10

Woweeee some active people on here!

I currently run approx 8km twice a week, cycle 40km twice a week and swim 1500m twice a week. I’ll try to add in an extra session of cycling if I can (a short sharp hill session). HOWEVER, I’m training for an Olympic distance triathlon. There is no way I’d be doing this exercise otherwise! A more normal amount of exercise would be 1 or 2 swims and a run.

wishingitwasfriday · 10/05/2018 21:16

Work full time, do 5 HIITs per week, cycle to and from work (12miles in total) 3 times a week, walk dog twice a day and true to hit at least 15,000 steps a day. Would like to start sea swimming but seem to run out of time each week!

BakedBeans47 · 10/05/2018 21:17

Hardly any :( my work is full on, I drive door to door, I work through lunch and am then home alone with my kids all the rest of the time. I think I am going to start getting up early in the mornings as I feel so decrepit and unfit :(

Pollaidh · 10/05/2018 21:22

I do 2 pilates classes per week, and 2 gym sessions of about 30-45 minutes cardio work on a bike. I also walk everywhere I can which is currently between 5000 and 10,000 steps a day. I have a disability and sport/walking can be a real struggle but is absolutely necessary to not end up in a wheelchair again. Sometimes I can't leave the house at all and walking out of the question.

You need to build up slowly, a year or so ago I could only walk around 2000 steps a day. To get 10,000 you need to be walking the school run, walking to town AND some extra.

DH goes for a couple of runs a week, cycles to work, and walks about 10,000 - 15,000 steps a day.

Pollaidh · 10/05/2018 21:23

Should add I work PT, partly because I need extra hours to do the exercise which is essential for my body and disability.
