A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

emummy, please report back on Orkney! I'm adding it to my list. I've decided to try and do a race on each of the Scottish islands (that have organised races). So far I've only done one (Tiree) but I loved it. I'm a bit constrained ATM by young children so this is a long term goal. I fancy Mull next I think....

Off out for my run shortly. Hoping to do 7miles-ish. I need a running watch. I've heard good things about Garmin. Is that what you experienced folk would go for?

LadyLance · 17/05/2018 11:10

Sounds like things are going well Just

That's a really cool goal Mended

Easy 5k this morning, last proper run before Sunday, although I might do a little bit on the treadmill tomorrow just to keep my legs moving!

Today's run felt a lot better than the rest of the week, so feeling good about everything rn!

Great running Just, well done.
That sounds like a good plan MendedDrum - and an excellent user name too! I have been thinking about doing some of the Hebridean halfs next year, will need to look at the cost. How was Tiree? I have been to Mull on holiday, a race there would be lovely.
So sorry to hear about your injury athing. I hope it resolves itself more speedily.

Beautiful run in the sun this morning. Started in town, then along a country road to the river bank and back home through the forest. Bliss!

Sorry, I meant to say my watch is a TomTom runner, the most basic model, Dh has the multi sport. Had it for four years now and love it. Garmins are also very popular and there is quite a range of prices depending on how fancy you want it! The dc rainmaker website does a lot of reviews of tech if you can't decide.

TheMendedDrum · 17/05/2018 13:27

300 (adding my 7ish miles from this morning)

Tiree was fab emummy, wholeheartedly recommend. Great atmosphere, lovely course and a ceilidh in the evening. Entry was about £20 I think? But the ferry is about £120ish if you take a car. So it does add up.

Thanks for watch tech advice. Off to google.

BusterTheBulldog · 17/05/2018 14:46

Oh no athing, fingers crossed it heals quickly!

13 to add from me so far this week.

Good luck to everyone in races this weekend!

Oh no athing I hope it isn't as bad as you think and you recover quickly Flowers

Mended- that's a fab goal. I'm only signing up for local races atm but once I'm more confident I'd love to be a running tourist. What a great way to see some new places. Tiree sounds fun. I do love a ceilidh!

I have a really basic old Garmin. I love it but I have nothing to compare it to.

emummy your runs always sound beautiful. You must live in a lovely part of the country.

Lady good luck for Sunday.

Oops, forgot to add 4.1 for tonight.

Sorry to hear that athing I'm still out too with my back. I come in here and read about people's runs wistfully. So annoying as had really got my distances up.

Chiro booked for Tuesday.

Have enforced rest from any exercise anyway has have just brought home an 8 week old black lab.

emummy · 18/05/2018 11:10

Sorry about your back Iam, hope the chiro sorts it out. And congrats on the puppy! That should keep you busy! We have a black lab, they are lovely dogs.
Warm sunny run this morning, cut it short as legs weren't feeling good. Still got a good distance done though, I think I just need to drop a little mileage during the week now that the long runs are so long. My elderly legs need a break!

I'd like some advice, please.

I'm pretty new to running. Recently finished Bridge to 10k. I have done 10k twice - takes about 20 minutes at my easy pace.

I run 4x a week.

Once for 10k
Twice for an hour at the same pace (8-9k)
Once parkrun, pushing myself to get to or below 30 minutes, so significantly faster.

I'm not willing to run more days a week and I'm not keen to go much more than 90 minutes for a long run.

Does my parkrun count as a "tempo run?" I push myself to the fastest I can sustain for 5k. I sometimes have to back off for a couple of minutes. My home course has a hill in it 3x. So I can't maintain a steady speed, but I can try to maintain a steady effort. I'm still getting used to this - to feeling what I have in me and not burning out or leaving anything behind.

The other two runs... I don't know. I guess I'm just getting used to running regularly.

Should I add anything to the mix on those two runs? Fartleks or hill work or anything?

JustGettingStarted · 18/05/2018 11:56

Oops sorry. 10k takes AN HOUR AND 20 minutes. Not 20 minutes.

emummy · 18/05/2018 18:26

You can certainly use parkrun as your tempo run and if you like you can do an easy mile before it as a warm up. One of your steady 8-9k runs could be a speeed session. You could alternate between intervals and hill reps or just do the one you prefer.

emummy · 19/05/2018 09:51

Good luck on your runs this weekend all, especially those with races!

farine · 19/05/2018 17:08

Thanks! Got the Liverpool half tomorrow so taking it easy today and drinking water to make sure I'm hydrated. This low carb diet has made me tired so not ran since Thursday to conserve energy and not to freak myself out if I struggle. Will see how tomorrow goes. Not looking for a particular time as only booked it to ensure i didn't get post London marathon blues. Just intend to plod around and enjoy the music at each mile

mayathebee · 19/05/2018 22:34

Good luck to everyone with races this weekend.

I've just done my last 10k training run before Edinburgh next weekend. I realised near the end of mile 5 that I could get a pb and managed to keep the pace up a bit for the last mile and was pleased to finish in 1:05:58. I think I'm ready for Edinburgh- I just need to avoid being knocked out by the huge hills or sweeper bus!

LadyLance · 20/05/2018 08:04

At the start of the Plymouth half marathon, feeling weirdly nervous. Thank you all for getting me this far!

JustGettingStarted · 20/05/2018 10:13

How did you get on, LadyLance?

JustGettingStarted · 20/05/2018 10:38

I want to go buy new running shoes! I don't need them, particularly. I just want some! I think I'll get some today.

emummy · 20/05/2018 12:15

You don't need a reason for new running shoes Just! Enjoy shopping!
Did a new route today recommended by a neighbour. Was lovely mix of country roads, woodland and riverside. Ran quite fast through the woodland as they were gearing up for an off road motorbike race! Kept looking over my shoulder, was very relieved to get out at the other end!

LadyLance · 20/05/2018 13:51

I finished Just which was the main goal! My chip time was 2:41, which I'm a little disappointed with, as I know I went off too fast and could have done things differently BUT it was a great day, really well supported and organized and even though it was hot there was enough water provided and shade that I never felt overheated. I would definitely train harder next time- the last 3 miles were horrid, and I think it's because I never got past 10 miles in training. Home now and had a shower and don't feel completely crippled, so I'm calling it a win!

I had a plan to walk for 5 minutes at each water stop to help me take on fluids and not overheat and walked some steep sections in the last two miles, but I'm really proud of myself for finishing, and I guess it gives me a target to improve on for next time!

Hope everyone else's running is going well! What sort of training/exercise do people do the week after a race? I'm thinking maybe some swimming?

LadyLance · 20/05/2018 13:53

I'd love to hear how everyone else got on with their races today as well!

emummy · 20/05/2018 13:59

Well done LadyLance, great result! May be time for wine & cake?!
I have a dog so usually get plenty of walking after a race. Swimming sounds nice though.

mayathebee · 20/05/2018 14:16

LadyLance, well done for sticking with it when it got tough. Don't be disappointed, it sounds like you did really well. Enjoy your afternoon - I hope you are planning to relax.

LadyLance · 20/05/2018 14:20

Definitely planning to relax, although madly I'm also looking at possible races for the rest of the year. There's another relatively local half in about five weeks that I'm considering, then possibly looking at Bristol and Exeter for the autumn!

I'll aim to do some gentle walking and swimming for the next few days, and see how I recover!
