I was quite surprised and keep trying to beat the system by running normally over a certain loop and seeing if I can do it faster than I can jeffing. I can’t!

mammymammyIRL · 29/12/2017 07:47

Abra that's interesting I must try it out.
I'm going to run this morning, it's raining at the moment though

The weather here has not been good for running—either too icy and we don’t have any parks or many pavements, or pouring with rain.

Might have to do treadmill, which I hate. Much prefer fresh air.

mammymammyIRL · 29/12/2017 21:21

Hate treadmill too, I ran two miles today didn't really enjoy, hope tomo will be better.

Hi, can someone point me to a quick description of 'jeffing'?

I want to enter my first half marathon and have started upping the miles but longest distance now only 5 miles and am finding my knees so so sore afterwards, wondering if I should try a different approach.

Abra1d · 30/12/2017 14:58

Essentially it is a run four minutes, walk one minute plan.

If you go to zenlabs, there is an app for the half-marathon, called 13.1.

Jeff Galloway also has a website, explaining his plan.

bibblebobblebubble · 30/12/2017 21:33

Thanks :)

Abra1d · 30/12/2017 22:32

Be interested to hear how you get on if you go for jeffing.

Hope the wet & windy weather isn’t making it too hard to get out.

I did a long run on NYD 17k/10.5m and did 5k tonight but legs were still tired from long run. I’ve printed off a “colour in trainer” to track my 1000k goal this year Grin

randomsabreuse · 03/01/2018 23:19

Did our local "morning after" fell run on NYD. Not fast, very hilly, must learn to let go on descents- ups aren't as bad as they were "easy" compared with DH's idea of a normal walk and but I waste so much effort slowing myself down on descents! Otherwise did my first non-organised run in ages today - weather was interesting but avoided woods and trails in favour of town roads and it wasn't too tough. Planning a double run tomorrow before DH is on call all weekend meaning no runs possible - will do cross training/workout videos instead.

Need to pin down my targets for the next year. My first vaguely planned half now clashes with a rearranged trail race and I have a real hankering for a fast 10k (sub 1 hour) but I also want to improve half and 5k times too..

Hi. Can I join you? Suddenly realised today I really should have started my HM training a good few weeks ago (It's at the beginning of March). I was struggling with motivation a bit but am raring to go now. I did 3 miles this morning and will be doing 2 or 3 runs per week as well as my long runs on a Saturday so the plan is to do 6 miles this week and build from there. Can I ask what the Jeff Galloway system is and am I too late to start for my HM ?

Purplerunner · 04/01/2018 20:15

sayhello it is a run/walk/run method, designed to minimise injuries. Jeff Galloway's website gives lots of information. So for example, I am currently using a 90 second run/30 second walk pattern for my long runs (training for marathon in April). Got 13 miles planned for this weekend and going fine do far. Not that much slower than I would be doing a continuous run! Thought it would feel like I was constantly starting/stopping but it doesn't. You can mess about with different ratios to find what suits you. The important thing is that you do the walk breaks right from the start, rather than leaving it until you are tiring.

Good luck with your half marathon training!

mammymammyIRL · 07/01/2018 13:31

Have run every day so far -11 miles completes so far, today will be short I've swollen glands and a three hour drive, will run when I get home.

So this week I did two 3 mile runs and then 6 miles today. My knees were a bit troublesome for the last mile so I think I need a tip to the physio otherwise I’m not going to make the full 13 miles. 8 weeks to get sorted

Lifeisabeach · 07/01/2018 19:54

Hi, can I join? I’m determined to do the half in my town this year, in May. I did it 6 years ago and have intended to do it again several times since, but have talked myself out of it each time.

OH and I have been building up our long runs over the last few weeks and did 8 miles today. He’s been reading up on heart rate zone training, so makes us do the long runs really slow to keep heart rates in the aerobic zone - meant to be good for building your base fitness..or something?! It’s meant that I’ve managed to increase my mileage without too much problem, although my legs are aching now. Still ages til May though so I guess we’ll probably keep the long run at 8ish miles for a while now before increasing again.

mammymammyIRL · 07/01/2018 23:06

Of course join us life Grin
Interesting about the slowing down, do you find that difficult?

OP posts:
Lifeisabeach · 08/01/2018 10:43

mammy yes it's hard to run slow at the start of the run, feels almost like running on the spot and quite unnatural. By the end of the 8 miles though I was quite happy with the slow pace! Apparently you should do 80-90% of training runs at this really easy pace.

mammymammyIRL · 08/01/2018 11:09

I'm already about 5 mins slower per mile than my running group

SkiGirl007 · 08/01/2018 19:12

Did some speed intervals today using the NHS podcast for speed, I find it useful as the lady tells me what to do and has beatiee music to run to. Then added on a few Kms to the end of it. Very cold though brrrr.

SkiGirl007 · 20/01/2018 07:49

It’s gone very quiet on here. How’s everyone doing?
I’ve been sat mostly on the sofa for a week with heavy cold & now sinus infection Sad just getting over it and youngest was sick at school Friday so think it will be few more days before my running shoes see daylight again! I’d had a good start to Jan training prior to this so hope it doesn’t derail me too much as my first half is in mid-Feb.

mammymammyIRL · 20/01/2018 09:18

This is my mileage so far this month although I've ran 9 times to make up this distance Shock
I'd a respiratory tract infection last week & this week have done 4 bootcamp classes.
First race of 2018 next Saturday Grin

Ooh good luck for next Sat mammy hope you are bug-free and it goes well. I got out for a half hr walk today and for the first time in a week thought ooh my legs feel like they may want to run tom... but I’m out all day tomorrow with my eldest at her sporting event so hopefully Monday I have the energy for a 5k leg stretch again.

thisgirlrides · 20/01/2018 21:15

Wow 10 runs @mammymammyIRL you've been busy Grin

I'm barely managing 3 atm but gradually edging up the miles and just managed my longest run to date of 8 (bloody hilly!) miles so with 8 weeks until my HM I'm feeling ok about it. I've started following a proper program now & whilst I'm not keen on speed training /hill reps, it's definitely helping.

Interesting what you say about heart rate @ . My garmin tells me all sorts of things about my highest/lowest/rearing HR that I don't understand and always mean to look it up so now off to research Smile

mammymammyIRL · 21/01/2018 06:30

Thisgirlrides I intended doing red January but missed out on days because of being sick 🤒
