Yes, very obvious as the lockers were opposite the cubicle just a short distance away. At the pool it's cubicle only changing.

argumentativefeminist · 12/06/2018 22:59

I'd say you were absolutely fine then brizzle! Star

CorrigansDoorKnob · 13/06/2018 02:08

I would have moved the stuff too Brizzle and I would have defended my actions. Might be worth having a word with reception if it’s an ongoing issue.

Great to hear about the open water swims. I’d love to give one a crack when we’re back in the UK next month, but i’m Not sure there will be time, and I probably don’t have space for my wetsuit. Or is everyone so hardy in the UK that they don’t need one?

Do your local pool allow you to use hand paddles and/or fins/flippers? I’ve heard rumours that they’re banned in some places.

brizzledrizzle · 13/06/2018 02:13

I'm glad to know that. I'm not normally assertive but I wasn't in a good mood yesterday so felt aggrieved.

I'd like to try open water swimming in the future, not sure how as I hate not being able to see the bottom.

tizwozliz · 13/06/2018 06:47

Most open water events in the UK allow you to hire wetsuits and all the one's I have done wetsuits have been compulsory.

Swimming flippers and paddles are allowed in lane sessions where I am ( don't think you're allowed flippers outside of lanes).

I'm surprised how many people I see using hand paddles these days. Most have very poor strokes and are probably doing more harm than good.

ScaredPAD · 13/06/2018 11:59

I had a lovely swim . Feeling much more confident. I'm still at about 1250m although sometimes I lose count! I had a few ponderings I thought I'd ask here...

  • does backstroke work different muscles? I went in the slow land to do 10 lengths as a sort of cool down/less breath focused and wondered it to myself. I only do backstroke if there's an empty land.

  • can I injure myself? I'm obese but used to swim a lot as a child so I can Swim 1k in 33mins. Not fast but also not a beginner (council pool, I'm usually medium lane). I want to swim more times a week but I injured myself running when I suddenly got into that a billion years ago and wondered if I should look out for anything. I presumed not at 4ish x 40min sessions... but I was previously unfit so thought Id ask!

  • how do I improve?

WeeDangerousSpike · 13/06/2018 12:07

Ooh, can I join?

Started swimming about 8 weeks ago as a combination weight loss / me time / stress reduction thing.

I've managed a max of 750m and have done a proper work out rather than just breast stroke for the first time this week.

I try for a minimum once a week but not always successful (have 18mo DD)

bruffin · 13/06/2018 17:33

Ive had a good week.
Monday did an Aqua class then did 42 lengths , then today did my swim class which was back stroke with flippers, which was good, then went on after class complete 2k in breastsroke.
Ive damaged 3 tendons in my shoulder but it doesnt hurt to swim Confused but i really hurts to put my clothes back on afterwards

bruffin · 13/06/2018 17:47

Oh and i lost my nice goggles. I was standing by my locker taking off the finis duo because i dont use it for lessons, the by the time i got to poolside they had goneShock Everyone reckons i must have dropped them on the way and someones picked them up and kept them.
Why would anyone want someone elses goggles, but its been a week and they havent turned up!

oops wrong thread

CorrigansDoorKnob · 14/06/2018 14:50

Welcome wee - a great start! I find swimming is a great stress reliever (so long as others in your lane know a bit of etiquette that is Wink)

Scared yes, it is possible to injure yourself. As with any exercise, start slowly and build up gradually. It easy to get shoulder and elbow pain if you’re stroke isn’t quite right. I’ve had both in my 3 years of swimming. Shoulder pain from a pull through with my arm straight (should be bent, with a high elbow) and medial elbow pain from flinging my arm straight at the beginning of recovery. All quite technical, but any persistent twinge shouldn’t be ignored.

lljkk · 14/06/2018 15:30

Bummer on the lost goggles... was that a rude set of expletives deleted? :)

bruffin · 14/06/2018 17:51

No unfortunately, it was to a very annoying poster on another thread, but was very polite considering Wink

Flowerypig · 15/06/2018 08:34

Good morning!

Managed a long ( for me) swim last night and managed to get from my usual 50 up to 60! Next week I want to crack 64- that’s a mile, isn’t it? Dug my old swimming mp3 out and found it really helped. Need to buy a new swim hat though as my old one had started to get all slack!
🌸🐷

ScaredPAD · 15/06/2018 08:48

Well done flowery! I usually do 50 lengths but haven't pushed for more. I might aim for that in a few months!

I don't wear a swim hat - does it keep your hair dry? In which case I might be tempted by one.

CorrigansDoorKnob · 15/06/2018 08:59

If anyone is interested in what I was banging on about above with regards to elbow pain, my coach has done a great blog post on the subject:

Flowerypig
I love my mp3 for swimming. What music do you listen to?
At the moment i have a mix of Musical Theatre, Mike and the Mechanics, Ed Sheeran, Ragnbone Man, Script and Kenny Rogers, Sam Smith, a bit of a mix, but thankfully my finis duo has shuffle which my old one didnt. Definitely swim a lot farther with music than without

Flowerypig · 15/06/2018 12:16

Scared: I just wear a hat to keep my hair out my eyes as i’m Trying to grow out a fringe and clips seem useless in water! I also like a hat because it helps my earphones stay in better
Bruffin: I like loud music! Old stuff mostly like the jam, queen, dusty springfield, elvis and so on. Makes a swim much easier.

tizwozliz · 15/06/2018 12:20

I've heard people say that a swimming hat keeps your hair dry but that's never been my experience. I don't wear one as my head gets too hot if I do.

I won a 30 pound Argos voucher in the week so treated myself to a fitbit flex2 which does some rudimentary swim tracking - i.e. counts lengths. Worn it for 3 sessions so far and only dropped one length out of the 264 I've swum so that's not too bad.

ScaredPAD · 15/06/2018 12:40

Ah thanks I've seen people wearing swimhats and I wondered if it kept hair dry!

I've wondered about some sort of fitbit/soemthing but I know nothing about them or their differences.

Do you tell it you're swimmi mg? I'm impressed it counts lengths

bruffin · 15/06/2018 12:48

Ive got a misfit ray
it counts lengths unless you are not using your arms, although you can wear it on your ankle. I have had it 18 months and its pretty accurate with lengths. I did the 5k swimathon last year and it was accurate over the 200 lengths.

tizwozliz · 15/06/2018 13:19

My fitbit auto recognises swimming of 15 minutes of more. Doesn't count if lengths if you're only kicking so sounds similar to the misfit ray.

I'd heard mixed reviews of the swim tracking online so I'd held off but with the voucher I won it was only 20 pounds so thought it was worth a try and so far it's been really accurate for me. It's counted lengths when i've been swimming front crawl, backcrawl and breaststroke. I've not tested it on fly yet as lanes have been busy this week.

Flowerypig · 15/06/2018 14:23

Does anyone’s pool do swim tag? It’s amazing! Counts your lengths and gives you a breakdown after your swim of distance, lengths, calories burnt, strokes and speed! And you can compete against others in time trials and see other swimmers progress to. If anyone is on and would like to follow ( or maybe you all already do this - I haven’t read through whole thread) then pm me as my swim tage user name is my name and I don’t want to put myself!

bruffin · 15/06/2018 14:27

i have to tell the ray that i am about to swim by tapping it 3 times
