Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

Amazing Sirzy, well done! You must be elated, that's an incredible achievement - you effectively shaved an entire mile off your time! And you ran a HM the week before. Insane but inspiring stuff.

Well done Tri. I have also found chocolate to be an essential part of recovery....

hoolit - I'm glad your sticking around. I'm really encouraged to hear that you've been running the week after the event. I have a fear that I will kick my trainers into a cupboard and disappear into the sofa once this completed. I need to find another event to run pre-Christmas.

Thank Abra1 - may have burnt myself out slightly - I had to have a nap this afternoon!

I did my last long run this morning - 20km. It was fine, I found the last 4km hard work but I think that's inevitable. I took in a lot of hills, more than will be on the course and I hope that will stand me in good stead for the HM. From here on in I'm tapering and trying to go easy on the chocolate biscuits.

minesapintofwine · 17/09/2017 19:56

Well done sirzy and tri!

And we'll done hrh on the long run.

Im also tapering. I'm really enjoying relaxing and the shorter easier running schedule. And I'm doing my very best not to think about the hm!

Sirzy · 18/09/2017 08:39

Well done tri

I am quite impressed my legs are working this morning! As well as the HM I did the linked 5k (on Friday) and family mile (straight after the half) so certainly got the miles in this last week!

TriGirl007 · 18/09/2017 14:31

Thanks all and well done on all the running sizy I can't run consecutive days yet my legs /joints just don't like it. I'm hoping as I lose abit more weight and build distance they may cope better.

Great run hrh and enjoy the biscuit taper Smile

Good luck minespintwine for your HM.

I have consumed too much fruit n nut chocolate and now feel yuck, hoping a swim tonight will help everything ease out.

TriGirl007 · 18/09/2017 14:35

My passing thought from the Tri yesterday that it was super refreshing to lots and lots of big hips n bums being super fit! I had to buy size XXL Tri shorts I'm a 14-18 bottom to top short arse and for once I didn't feel "big" Smile exercising. I had both my DDs with me and the youngest whose 6 said "mummy I can't wait to have ago at one of these Tris" Grin that made my day as there were lots of positive all sized women role models running around.

Cherrymix · 18/09/2017 16:34

Hello all. Posted a while back about getting back from a hip injury. Have worked my way back through the last couple of weeks of C25k and am now onto the C25k plus podcasts which are going ok.

Hip is holding up - its weird - doesn't hurt when running but aches at night. I have no idea what's causing it. Have been doing a lot of those pelvic thrust excercises that you do lying on your back. Soemthing about them feels a bit rude Blush

HRHPrincessMegan · 18/09/2017 20:42

Hi Cherry - glad your hip is improving. I used to get hip pain after running too. In my case it was due to "referred" pain traveling up my leg because I was wearing the wrong trainers - so said the physio after he conducted some gait analysis. After that I switched to a pair of Asics 1000 and hey presto - no more hip pain.

Oh, I also had amnesiac bum muscles which meant my gluts weren't pulling their weight while I was running which put everything else under undue pressure. Sounds like you may have a similar issue if bridges are being recommended.

Cherrymix · 18/09/2017 20:53

LOL at "amnesiac bum muscles"!

Physios are great at saying stuff like that but I find it v difficult to visualise what they actually mean.

Anyway been out tonight and puffed my way through "Step Up" with NHS Laura helpfully saying things like - only 5 more minutes of this track - yeah right but still about 25 minutes of running.

Haven't entered a HM yet but am thinking about one in March which is a sort of trail run and quite nice scenery.

minesapintofwine · 19/09/2017 10:50

Hi cherry glad your hip is on the mend.

I took my dog running for the first time today. I was unsure as although she is a healthy border Collie she is 10 years old and also wondered if she would enjoy it. I needn't have worried. She was an angel.

We walked a few minutes for a sniff and a poo (her not me) then ran 2km without stopping. She ran perfectly by my side! Then I let her have another walk/poo Hmm and when she saw me getting strava ready she looked keen! She was slower on the way back but I slowed down and had another little walk at the end. We managed 4km in 26 mins I was amazed! I'm going to increase her to 5/6km and make it a Tuesday date it was so enjoyable.

Best decision ever 🐕

mammymammyIRL · 19/09/2017 11:29

So guys I didn't disappear off the thread just because I'd done my half Grin just been busy since Smile
will catch up with everyone first and then tell ye about it Smile

pik well done for signing up for another one, you've well and truly caught the bug, what's a kids marathon?

shortaris good to hear your foot has improved
sirzy can't wait to read how your half went

I've inquired off the local sports injury and massage clinic in our village about deep tissue massage and plan to do one in next few weeks. It's €40 and lasts approx an hour and he has great hours 10am to 9pm each week day.

so stewart and blackandpurple on Oct 1st
sirzy 9 mins off your time is a huge improvement

trigirl well done to you and your dd, isn't that funny that the part you dreaded turned out the easiest Hmm

I'm currently listening to Kerre Woodham's Short fat Chick to Marathon Runner when I'm in the car for amusement and tips! Because I'm also a short chick more heavy than fat I guess. I'm a 10-12 on top and 12-14 on the bottom and when I get to my target weight, creeping there, I'll be 8 on top and 10 on the bottom. I'll always have chunky thighs and strong calves, but those legs power me through the miles.

minesapint sounds good about running with your dog

so here it goes my half marathon experience
as I mentioned up thread I was in heels for 12 hours previous day, and felt unable to walk at about 12am on half marathon day. soaked my feet in boots foot bath for about 20 mins and sprayed on their peppermint soothing foot spray a couple of times in the next hour and went to sleep. Got up at 6.10 on race day and was able to walk, but due to dawdling didn't really have time for breakfast and I'd poor sleep so I wasn't too keen, grabbed a banana and two crazy caramel bars from Tesco and ate them on my way to my friends house. We drove to the half and she told me that she'd been in bed all previous day and didn't know if she could run or not. 47 trips to toilet later and we were off. One of the best organised events I've been to in my running career to date. 20 portaloos, racepacks ready with singlet, number and pins inside, pacers from 1 hr every 15 mins to 2.15 and we started with our pacers. There was meant to be one for 2.20 also but there wasn't. This annoyed me a little but I figured I'd aim to keep the 2.15 in my sights. I set my runkeeper to a target pace of 11 min miles and this really helped as up to mile 11 I was ahead of target pace. At mile 11 I felt my hips with every step which i blame on the heels the previous day this mile took 14 long minutes and I found the following two tough but ok. I finished in 2 hours 28 mins so 8 mins faster than last one I had done (which wasn't an official one). I lost a bit of time mixing my tailwind at first water stop as I didn't stop to use the table, mixed it while walking, didn't mix any at second water stop and did again at last water stop but at the table. All of these things cost me time. I had hydration backpack with me but decided not to use it.

Weather was ideal - cool morning, it's known as the flattest fastest straightest half marathon in Ireland and it didn't lie. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and my friend did too she finished in 2hrs 15 mins, and we're planning on making it an annual event. Grin we're talking about another in March also but I'd like to do a metric marathon with a virtual race in the interim.

mammymammyIRL · 19/09/2017 11:30

Sorry about mammoth post!

minesapintofwine · 19/09/2017 11:39

mammy well done I'm really pleased it went so well! You did it! 👏

My half is also the 1st (same one as black)

mammymammyIRL · 19/09/2017 11:51

Cool lots of people nearing their halves so!

randomsabreuse · 19/09/2017 12:09

My number just arrived!! Had a couple of bad running weeks with a cold plus car disasters then on walking holiday but did manage a vaguely paced 10m at supposedly 2e 4hm 4e which ended up as 2e 1 hell this is steep .5 whee nice downhill 3hm 4e thanks to my planned disused railway cycle route being shut due to missing bridges. Also did a fun trail 10k as well. Sunday on return was a disaster 1k before tight hips caused achilles pain and that's the one thing I don't ignore...

Looking for 20m total this week with a 10m run then 25 and 30 before taper.

Is quite busy with things on but will just have to do morning runs!

Abra1d · 19/09/2017 13:01

Well done Mammy!

Thanks for the post. Very useful insight.

mammymammyIRL · 19/09/2017 13:53

abra1d the pacing in my ear every mile was very encouraging I felt and will be something I'll use again. Last 3 miles when I was behind schedule I was thinking 'F U Runkeeper'GrinAngry

shortaris1 · 19/09/2017 20:28

Well done Sirzy, Tri and Mammy Great running

Welcome back Cherry

Did 4.5 miles last night. Calf was tight but not unbearable and great to be back out. Following an Asics plan which I get to tick off!

HRHPrincessMegan · 20/09/2017 09:25

Well done mammy! Delighted to hear that you had a really positive HM - it's really encouraging for those of us who've yet to run.

LongtimeLurkerNowPokemonHunter · 20/09/2017 14:50

Did a 10 mile run Monday night. Got a 5k and 10k pb (without realising) and did 10 miles around 1.48 which I was pleased with. Still not broken 30 mins for 5k or an hour for 10!

Have entered two halfs in secret. Only fiancé and one friend knows (she only knows one!)- 1St and 15th which was a bit daft!

TriGirl007 · 20/09/2017 21:15

Had very long day at work involving 7hrs of travelling but I got in and was changed into running kit and out the door in 8mins knowing if I stopped I wouldn't get back up again and got a nifty 5k in between heavy rain showers. Now I'm collapsed with marmite toast Grin
Inspiring reading about your long runs I'm hoping to get a longer run in at the weekend.

Rankellior · 20/09/2017 21:33

I'm strugglkng keeping to my training plan with less than 4 weeks to go. Have been struggling with sore knees so got massage last night to try and sort it but they advised not to run for a few days so haven't run since Sunday. Luckily got time on Friday and Sunday for longish runs. And legs feeling better so hopefully problems sorted. Kind of wishing the next few weeks away so I can get it over and done with!

randomsabreuse · 20/09/2017 22:28

Hill sprint session yesterday with running club. Great apart from went over on ankle at the start of the last rep which hurt like a bastard at the time but was fine to run on 5 minutes later. Still feels ok - phew! As DD is in childcare for the first time tomorrow I'm going to try a 2E , 6hm, 2E 10 miler tomorrow as have a busy weekend planned. Won't be getting any pbs 5k Parkrun has been 30.08 since Christmas Eve (v flat course and my locals aren't) and 10k is under my planned half pace too.

That leaves around 9 miles for the weekend - so should be realistic to reach 25 miles if I get up in time. 30 next week then 25 then "only" 10 in the week of the half. I can do this, honest!

Cherrymix · 21/09/2017 00:56

Still plugging away on my half hour runs. Going to start inching up the distances over the next few weeks and maybe have a go at a local monthly 10k at the end of next month. Its quite a nice one because its two laps of 5k so if you feel knackered half way you can stop.

Might have a go at park run but my local is not much fun - involves a great big hill.

minesapintofwine · 21/09/2017 08:59

Great to hear everyone doing so well. I'm just heading out to do 4 miles. It's pouring with rain so don't really want to but think I should as if it's like this on the 1st I'll just have to get on with it. Plus I don't have to go tomorrow Grin

I'm massively tapering giving my legs are huge rest which is definitely helping. After today I'm just planning on 5k on Monday and 3km on Wednesday and thats it until the hm on the Sunday. It does my legs a world of good whilst the short runs keep my hand in.

minesapintofwine · 21/09/2017 09:00

cherry ah but if you go up you must come down right?
