In a post night shift fit of silliness, I have just signed up for a fun sprint triathlon in 12 weeks...
I'm 33, 5'6 and 10st. Am currently fairly unfit but working on it, and am on week 3 of c25k. Swimming is my strong point, but will be aiming to finish it rather than get a decent time.
Am I going to die?!
Is anyone else doing one this year?

Tis definitely chilly! I’ve been away for the weekend, got back in the pool today and oh good lord it was hard!!!!! I’m so knackered now and I didn’t manage more than 10 consecutive lengths. Anyway I swam for 45 mins so better than nothing. I’m still having knee problems so hopefully I’ll speak to a physio today. No running or cycling for two weeks now and I can still feel it Sad. 14 weeks till my big triathlon and 7 till the sprint tri. Do not feel remotely ready for either.

catstring · 05/03/2018 11:19

This weather has really knocked me off. We were pretty much snowed in last week and with three kids off school, I just grinded to a halt, ate too much and drank too much wine too. Now I feel sluggish, fat and demotivated.
It's still cold, damp and slushy so running and cycling a bit grim. Usual group training sessions all cancelled last week too.
I just feel fed up and low today. I could swim or go to a spin class but just can't be arsed!

SkiGirl007 · 05/03/2018 13:38

Do a dvd cat? Or you tube work out? I made my self do the 30-day Shred dvd and felt better after and boy my legs felt it the next day! My half marathon was cancelled so rather down but relieved at the wend as I’m nursing a sore foot so it was abit of a blessing in disguise. I did 20k in the rain on the bike Sunday, and dvd & Swim today. Just had sports massage so can now chill till school pick up & after school clubs taxi duty kicks in Smile

Igottastartthinkingbee · 05/03/2018 21:03

I know what you mean catstring. You just need to bite the bullet and force yourself to go to a class or to the pool. Once you’ve set off you’ll probably feel ok.

I’m feeling frustrated at the moment. Dodgy knees have settled but I’ve barely done anything for 4 weeks. Seen a physio who says it’s most likely my lower back causing the knee pain Confused I sort of get she means! Anyway, another physio appointment tomorrow so we’ll see what she says after I’ve been doing the exercises she prescribed.

I’m so worried about the triathlon in June. I’ve been looking into whether I can defer my entry to next year. But I really, really want to do it this year. I’ve been so focussed on how I won’t be ready for June that I forgot that I’ve entered a sprint tri in mid April. Numpty! God knows what I’ll do about that one. It’s much shorter so I could still wing that one if I get clear run of training between now and then.

Hope everyone else is doing better than me! I’ll crawl back under my rock now Grin

Lifeisabeach · 06/03/2018 19:46

I fell off this thread, kept forgetting to update! I’m still plodding along; got out on my bike a couple of weeks ago when the weather was briefly milder, and it was ok - I hadn’t forgotten how to ride! Been back to the turbo through the snowy weather though.

I’ve got a duathlon on Saturday, eek. It’s on a closed circuit track thing and at the moment the forecast is for rain, so could be slippy. Fingers crossed I don’t fall off!

SkiGirl007 · 16/03/2018 20:09

How’s everyone doing? I’ve had a sore toe joint for nearly 4wks so had to take a break from running. Sad However I’ve stepped up the cross training been doing HITT and swimming - finally got to 60L in 45mins the most I’ve done in years Smile. Also found I could happily do 5000m on the gym rowing machine without aggreviating my foot Grin so may try that again tomorrow whilst DD is doing her sports activity. Determined to try not lose too much running fitness and hope after a month off I can try running a 5k again without too much pain.

SkiGirl007 · 16/03/2018 20:09

How did your dualthon go beach?

catstring · 17/03/2018 00:14

Still plugging away with the cycling but it's hardly been great weather for it Grin

Hope you are all fighting fit ladies!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 17/03/2018 16:16

Hello! ski well done on the swimming! 60 in 45mins is great! I’ll be happy with anything under an hour but right now I’d just be happy to be getting anywhere near 60 lengths. I think if you keep your swimming up to that level you won’t lose much fitness ski. Swimming is so good for aerobic fitness.

Still having back and knee trouble so training has taken a huge step back. Hoping to swim in the morning so will play it by ear. Did 2.5 mile run earlier, very slow and with knees taped. Felt fine but I just want/need to be doing more!

SkiGirl007 · 19/03/2018 21:24

Sorry to hear your having knee trouble bee it’s really frustrating isn’t it Sad
I’ve taken most of the last 5wks off running but still having problems. I did a tentative 5k on sat with some walking at each1k to see how my body felt. But still struggling with pain in my hip and issues with my toe joint 😬 had a 1500m swim tonight which is normally ok but flipping hip painful again despite doing mostly F.C. and only 6L of breaststroke 😕

Igottastartthinkingbee · 21/03/2018 09:17

Very frustrating. I’m about to head out on my bike. Done a couple of easy rides in the last two days, going to do an easy longer one today, and just hope that it doesn’t aggravate anything. Knees taped and doing a 5 day course of ibuprofen to try and settle any inflammation. It’s been 4 weeks of physio and I don’t think she knows what to do with me now!

Hope your hip and toes settle ski. Anyone else got anything to add to our anatomy injury tick list?!?!

SkiGirl007 · 21/03/2018 09:27

Ooh enjoy the ride bee I can’t wait to get cycling again regularly, I even left a towel & clothes bag at work last week. Alas we then had massive dump of snow and I’m full of cold again grrrrr! It’s beaut cold blue sky day ere though so hoping that lifts my spirits & clears the snot Grin

I’ve also been googling hip strengthen exercises...again. Plus rolled a tennis ball in my groin for 5-10mins last night as my lovely sports massage lady said there is still a chance to break up c-Sec scar tissue that’s 11yrs old and giving me constant grief. They cut loads out after 2nd C-Sec but warned me was lots there Hmm

SkiGirl007 · 24/03/2018 11:36

Been back in the gym today managed total 6k rowing and bit on the sit bike which was all low impact but the rowing gives me a really good workout as I’m still avoiding impact exercise. Followed it up with a swim as DD wanted to go in.

How’s everyone else doing? I’m really hoping we have seen the back of the snow though I need some ☀️!!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 26/03/2018 14:46

Been out on my bike again this morning, same 10mile loop as usual. Gorgeous out in the sunshine! Taking it very easy, still getting knee and back pain afterwards but I’m doing some stretches pre and post ride to try to combat that. I’ve self diagnosed tight hip flexors and the exercises address that. I’m losing faith in the physio I’m afraid so I’m trying to sort it myself. Might be a daft move but hey ho.

SkiGirl007 · 26/03/2018 18:04

I know how you feel bee you know your body the best I would research and try different things that’s what I’ve done, plus I have a fab sports massage once a month and that lady is worth her weight in gold & very knowledgable!

Got out on my bike today, first solo ride since Sept I think! Ended up doing 30miles Smile was lovely weather and we have a beaut mostly off road flatish path. I did start bonking at two hours again but bought a banana & drunk ribena which helped Grin. I was bonking at 2hr Mark running as well despite trying to drink & nibble enroute? I’ve got plenty of body fat why can’t I burn that!!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 26/03/2018 20:22

Haha! If only we ever just burned fat eh! 30 miles is good going mind!! I’d have to go up some serious hills to do 30 miles round here. Would love an off road path too.

My physio has referred me on to a colleague for this weeks appointment so she’s out of ideas too. I should probably be seeing a sports physio but my health insurance peeps sent me to her. She’s very nice and I’m sure she knows her stuff but she’s not helped me with my back at all. Knees are better for tape but they were still very achy after I did a little too much on the bike yesterday. Rode my bike without the tape today and seemed better (?!Confused). But running with tape is definitely better. I’ll be in spending forever in T2 taping my knees at this rate Grin

Lifeisabeach · 29/03/2018 19:27

Not got around to updating again!

I did the Bath Duathlon a few weeks back - it was a tough one, very muddy run course and quite windy on the bike. But I was fairly pleased with how I did. Epic fail though - I forgot to put on my timing chip!! Realised towards the end of the first run that I didn’t have it on. We had extra timing chips on our helmets to record bike laps, so I emailed the organiser with a screenshot of my times from my garmin, and he added me into the results. He could see some data from the helmet chip so it all tied up.

I did another duathlon last weekend. First run good, went all out on the bike and then fell apart in the second run. Definitely need to do more brick runs!

In between those I did an 11 mile run in preparation for the half marathon I’m doing in May. Have had a sore knee since so hoping it’s nothing major.

Have been out on the bike a few times but only 10 miles or so as that’s all I seem to have time for. Could do with upping the distance really.

Hope everyone else is ok!

SkiGirl007 · 31/03/2018 17:57

Sounds like you are doing really well beach hope the knee is ok.

I did park run with the kids today Grin was nice to be running again and touch wood don’t appear to have any niggles but I’m going to see if lacing my trainers differently may help my toe joint as well. I’ve been rowing in the gym to get some cardio without impact after nearly 6wks of not running.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 04/04/2018 20:44

Still plodding on here! Got a sprint tri (pool swim) in 10 days. My running is ok, bike should be fine but my swimming, oh dear!! Struggled just doing 10 consecutive lengths last night, so I’m not confident about doing 400m in the sprint. And I don’t even like to think about the 1500m lake swim in June. What am I doing?!?!?! I constantly think about binning off the big triathlon. But if I can just get through the swim I know I can take my time and be in control of the rest of it. How’s everyone else going?

SkiGirl007 · 05/04/2018 20:59

Good luck bee hope you can get through the swim ok.
Ive ran more in the last week than in whole of March I’m hoping to slowly up the mileage again if injury allows. I need to get on the bike though just haven’t found the time yet without kids or work.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 11/04/2018 09:10

First (only?!?!) tri of the season coming up on Sunday! And I’ve just realised it’s not on closed/quiet roads Shock Bloody great A roads with roundabouts for some of it!!! Wish me luck people!

SkiGirl007 · 14/04/2018 15:42

Hope it goes ok bee.

I’ve been altitude training aka skiing Grin legs knackered but we had amazing time and my 6yr old spent every afternoon zooming down with us which was lovely to all ski together including my older DD. But boy they were wearing DH and I out by the end! Oh to have young legs. Hoping I get an altitude bounce for a week and can do all 3 sports this week inc cycle to work & swim in the outdoor pool (now open) near work.

SkiGirl007 · 14/04/2018 15:44

Ooh I did get a few lengths in the outdoor pool at the bottom of the ski run it was lovely pool surrounded by ski hill Smile

Igottastartthinkingbee · 15/04/2018 15:30

I survived the roads! A small section was on a lovely country lane but the rest was pretty busy. Enjoyed it but didn’t find it easy, made me realise how hard the Olympic distance race is going to be in 8 weeks time Shock eeeeeekkkkk!!! Lower back is sore now but everything seems to be in tact Grin

Igottastartthinkingbee · 15/04/2018 15:30

Like the idea of that kind of altitude training ski!
