In a post night shift fit of silliness, I have just signed up for a fun sprint triathlon in 12 weeks...
I'm 33, 5'6 and 10st. Am currently fairly unfit but working on it, and am on week 3 of c25k. Swimming is my strong point, but will be aiming to finish it rather than get a decent time.
Am I going to die?!
Is anyone else doing one this year?

Wish I had a skiing holiday booked!

Well done lamp!

Lamppull · 07/02/2018 17:07

Urgh have a cough which has kept me up for two nights. Tried to run last night and felt rubbish. Forcing myself to rest tonight.

Lifeisabeach · 07/02/2018 17:55

Well done for getting out on your bike lamp, but sorry to hear you’re feeling rough.

Yay for the skiing holiday Ski

I’ve entered an aquathlon this Sunday. It’s the same one I did last month - there is a series of them through the winter. Kind of dreading it, but it’s a good way of seeing whether the training is having an effect, and it’s so local I can’t really not do it. OH is doing it too.

Then we are off down to Devon for a few days with the kids over half term. I haven’t had a day off from training this year, so will definitely have some rest days. Hopefully will get a couple of runs in though.

Then when we’re back I really need to get out on the road on my bike, to get ready for my duathlon in March!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 07/02/2018 20:06

life if I'd not had a day off training this year so far I'd either be pretty fit or more likely injured Grin fair play to you! Aquathon sounds like a good training tool, hope it goes well.

Well my DS is STILL ill, poor sod, so the days and night are merging into each other and there's not been much sleep since last Thursday. Really hope he picks up soon, for both our sakes, I'm feeling broken! Escaped for a swim last night but just plodded up and down a bit. Didn't have much of a plan, just wanted to get out of the house! DH now away so it'll be the weekend before I can get out again.

You're right to rest up lamp, training when carrying a virus can do more harm than good sometimes.

Do any of you follow any triathlon coaches on Facebook? If not, check this page out, the 'triathlon coach cafe'. Lots of useful chat going on and lots of useful videos. Some are training tips, some about stretches and core exercises, some for getting around the practicalities of fitting training in around general life. Worth a look, sorry I can't do a link!

SkiGirl007 · 07/02/2018 21:52

Thanks for tip bee for FB page I’ll have a look later. Hope your DS feels better soon, and you can all see the light at the end of the sickness sleep deprived tunnel soon.
Hope you have a gd HT beach Devon is lovely (but I’m biased Grin).

I’m away with work at mo but hope to get a slightly earlier train tom home so I can squeeze 5k run in before collecting kids from their childcare. I’ve certainly carb overloaded tonight on works dinner!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 11/02/2018 19:42

So I decided today was the day to get back on my bike. What an idiot!!!!! I was sooooooo cold!!!! And I have a niggle in my knee that's no better off for it. Did a very gentle few miles avoiding hills as much as possible. I just wanted to go out for a little ride to get the ball rolling really but, good grief, at times I swear I could've run faster.

Dare I say it but kids are much better but now we're into half term so training will be evenings only this week.

I've entered a sprint triathlon for mid April. 400m/20km/5km. Feels quite nice to have a race with reasonable distances in the diary, not just the whopping Olympic distance!

Lifeisabeach · 11/02/2018 20:32

Oh no bee, I wouldn’t have fancied being out on the bike today. At least you’ve done it though, onwards and upwards. Great that you’ve got a race to aim for as a stepping stone to the Olympic distance.

Did my aquathlon today. Swim was pretty good, I got a bit held up by someone else in my lane but still did one of my best 400m times.

The run wasn’t so good! It was freezing and really windy, plus the field was very wet and squelchy in places. I’ve done this same race 3 times now, in Nov, Jan and today, and my run has got slower each time! I was hoping to see progression! Probably partly due to the weather though and conditions underfoot. I probably need to invest in some trail shoes!

SkiGirl007 · 11/02/2018 21:35

Well done bee and beach on the run/swim and cycling. The weather wasn’t easy today. I did my first ever HM today weather was cold and windy with few hail sprinkles but it went ok mostly. I do need to still sort out my fuelling as I bonked again at the 10m mark dragging myself through the last 3m dropping pace. I’m gonna try see if I can stomach a naked bar at the 8m mark as I’m only using jelly babies & apple juice with water at the moment.

Lifeisabeach · 11/02/2018 21:42

Have you tried Tailwind Ski? It’s a powder you dissolve in water and then drink, it’s food/fuel as well as electrolytes. Well done for completing the half, brilliant achievement!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 11/02/2018 22:16

Oh man a half marathon in this cold weather! Well done!! Do you need to adjust your pace slightly? It's very hard to do with the adrenaline of a race mind. My one and only HM was on a very hot summer day. So I forced myself to go slowly because of that more than anything else. But I got round ok and only a little slower than my target time still felt like I had heat stroke for the next couple of days though! maybe try using gels for the next one?

Igottastartthinkingbee · 11/02/2018 22:24

Ooh life sorry just saw you did your aquathon today. Running outside after swimming, respect!!! And they run a winter league?!?! Must be mad GrinWink How annoying that your runs are getting slower, maybe your body is trying to tell you that it doesn't like winter aquathons? Wink

SkiGirl007 · 12/02/2018 17:39

bee Grin at the maybe your body doesn’t like aquathhons! I’d agree sounds hardcore life in theses temperatures well done just for taking part!
I’ve not tried Tailwind but have heard of it, is it like those High5 sachet things? I’ve used those once on a long cycle ride wasn’t overly keen on the taste though, I did wolf the banana down though that I was given at the end that tasted SO nice, and I don’t really like them!

Lifeisabeach · 12/02/2018 18:12

Ski, lots of people recommend Tailwind as it’s good if you can’t face eating while running - you can just keep sipping as it’s a liquid. They do lots of different flavours and you can buy a sample pack to try them all. I like the green tea one, will be using it for my half in May.

Haha my body felt ok despite be the cold weather bee, think it’s just the muddy conditions slowing me down!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 16/02/2018 10:17

How is everyone? Training has ground to a halt for me. Knees are sore, tips of my toes are sore (?!?!). And neither have got better for a nearly a week off. Will swim this weekend and take it from there I think.

Lamppull · 16/02/2018 18:02

Did some interval running then a short cycle today. My average speed was above 14mph despite strong headwind so I'm getting faster! Really chuffed. Can't wait to get out for some longer cycles when it's warmer.

SkiGirl007 · 16/02/2018 19:56

beach I’ve heard of tailwind but not sure where I can buy just 1-2sachets to try, I don’t take caffeine hardly at all either it affects my heart so I’d have to find the non-caffeine version. I’ll look online later, thanks.

Hope a swim helps bee I’ve been really struggling with “alignment” pain in my hip after the HM but did a great swim last night which helped loosen my hips up but my back muscles are sore due to making change in my breathing timing on F.C. which really increases my speed I had a “wow” moment Grin

lampull that’s good speed I’m more at the 11mph average Smile last year but hoping if I can find the courage to use the road bike I’ll pick up speed.

We had family 5m walk today as it’s halfterm here. It was beaut weather and lots of bikes out made my DH &I get the “oooh time to cycle” feeling after a winter off them.

SkiGirl007 · 17/02/2018 19:49

Some mini Tri training today with park run with my youngest (6yr) followed by swimming Grin I did squeeze out 20mins of F.C. once DH had retrieved the kids at the end.

SkiGirl007 · 19/02/2018 22:19

Dusted cobwebs off the bike after 5mths off it and did 20m today Smile felt comfy as the running fitness definitely kicked in but boy my “sit” bones are rather sore tonight! Not saddle fit at all....!!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 20/02/2018 09:21

20miles on your first ride back, impressive! I’m still not doing much. Went for a swim yesterday but only 30mins. Sore knees still an issue and now my blinkin elbows (?!?) are giving me grief! Toes still sore too but getting ever so slightly better. Not enough that I dare run though. I can’t afford this time out!!!!!!!!!

Lamppull · 21/02/2018 14:47

10k run last night, swimming tonight then hopefully a longer cycle tomorrow! If I achieve this, I feel a glass of wine will be in order!

Keep going ladies!

Lamppull · 22/02/2018 13:10

Talk some sense into me - I did a 25 mile solo ride and I'm disappointed in my ave speed of 13.5 mph. I know I should be proud of my effort etc but I'm falling into the trap of Strava comparisons and I know I'm too hard on myself.
I should focus on all the calories it burnt and eat cake shouldn't I?!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 22/02/2018 16:30

Not so long ago lamp you were scared of even getting on your bike! Be proud of yourself!!! Maybe switch strava off of you can bear it? Or can you set it to just record your routes/times so your not pitched against others? I don’t have strava, can you tell?!? Grin

SkiGirl007 · 22/02/2018 18:08

My average speed is still 11mph Grin has been for years but I’ve got short legs does that count 😂 I struggle with speed on a bike but at least I’m out there and not sat on the couch. Enjoy your achievements lamp, I know nothing about getting faster on a bike but is there any training stuff on you tube? Or spinning classes (my idea of hell..) some folk love them. Other than that I think it’s just time in the saddle and mix up sprints and hills like running to build strength & muscle memory

SkiGirl007 · 25/02/2018 14:22

Did a early cold but fab 10k run on Saturday after feeling pretty beaten up from the HM I’ve been struggling with running mojo and hip pain. This run did feel good until last 0.5k then had flipping foot pain (which I’ve never had) and is still sore this morning. flipping heck hope it eases off for next weekend as have another HM which I’m now really not looking forward to I just want to avoid getting injured as at my age it takes months to heal!
Hope we don’t all get snowed in next weekGrin maybe heavy snow will cancel the run as it’s a big one.

catstring · 26/02/2018 12:55

Brrrrr cold one this week. Think cycling is out the window and I was looking forward to donning my new, snazzy helmet too!
Indoor training me thinks - swimming! Might attempt a 5k tonight when dh gets home but I'll be wrapping up!
