Hi

Has anyone recently started or just about to start? Would be great to have somewhere to check in and cheer each other on.

I've started very slowly and am about to embark on week 3. I'm spending 2 weeks on each week if that makes sense!

Look forward to anyone else joining in.

I went out this morning with the Map My Run on with the new settings, but it didn't really make a difference. The distance shown on the computer was still about 230m less than the distance it measured - and when you look at the map trace of what it was measuring, it looks like a drunk person weaving all over the paths, straying into the river at times, spinning in circles on a couple of occasions... I guess if I had really done all that, it might have added up to an extra 230m!

It means also that my time is slower than it shows, which I guess does make sense, because when I mapped the loop I always run in a specific amount of time, and calculated it from there, it seemed like I would need 40 min to run 5K. And yet my app was showing that I had already done that, with a mix of running and walking. But clearly it wasn't as far as I thought!

Hate running into people I know who see me like this - such a sweaty tomato face, even when I'm feeling OK. It felt a bit easier this morning actually, though still quite painful on my shins afterwards. It goes away fairly quickly, which is progress, but throughout the next few days I still get stabbing pain at times.

NameOfUser · 23/10/2016 12:45

Hi can I join?
Reading all your stories has made me more determined to keep this up. Did w2r2 last night and going out again tomorrow.
Had anybody noticed a difference going in the night or morning?

HepKestrel · 23/10/2016 12:48

w3r1 completed.

first time my bum has been seen in leggings in public for over a decade i think !!!

Thinking pacing myself outside will be my challenge though. went out way too quick on the first 90sec/3min runs....... the last 3mi run was so slow !!! but did it.

And finally have app I am happy with. it correctly fades my own music down to give you audible prompts.

Next runs weds and friday afterwork, and back in the gym.

starting to properly stretch my thighs before and after, slight tightness in my right thigh if I am not careful.

but woohoo! still on target.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 24/10/2016 15:01

Crotchet, I know exactly what you mean about tomatoes.

Welcome to the thread, Name. I only run in the mornings because it's when I have the most energy.

Woohoo Kestrel, good on you!

OK I have a mission now. One of my oldest & best friends, S, died from pancreatic cancer yesterday so I'm going to apply for a Pancreatic Cancer UK place on the Vitality London 10K in May 2017.

I am quite possibly nuts and doing the 5K Race for Life would be much easier. But I think if I'm doing it as a tribute to S & to raise money, it ought to be a challenge.

compostheap · 25/10/2016 00:15

Hello!

Can I join in too. Did W3R2 today and feeling very pleased with myself, but already dreading W4.

I only sat down to read this to encourage myself that it is possible to run for a whole 5 minutes without conking out - DH is a very keen runner, slightly incredulous that I am worried about running for 5 minutes, and therefore not the best person to share my fears with!

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 25/10/2016 06:09

Welcome to the thread, compost.

If you can run 3 minutes - which you can - you're already over halfway to being able to run 5 minutes!

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 25/10/2016 06:48

Anyone else struggling on week 5? I've repeated it 4 times and I just can't do the 20 minute run - I'm struggling to do 8 minutes on D2. The worse bit is I'm actually getting slower - my running pace last time I did the 2x8 min was 11 min/km, my slowest ever!

Becoming so demotivated, I loved it at the start, but now I'm just not progressing Sad

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 25/10/2016 08:23

Darling, have a look back at Crotchet's posts about using an interval app & adding 30 seconds on at a time. Maybe something like that would help?

W7R2 done and I never, ever, EVER thought I'd be considering getting fitted for running shoes as a Christmas present.

HepKestrel · 25/10/2016 08:40

really sorry about your friend empress Flowers

I am sure you will be caught up in the atmosphere of the big race and be fine.

hi compost ! I'm also on w3. w3r2 is after work tonight !! I'll keep you (virtually) company !

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 25/10/2016 08:55

Thanks Kestrel. I'm feeling fucking determined anyway. I can run at least 3.5K now so it's not going to be long before I can do 5 & then I have months to work up to 10.

HepKestrel · 25/10/2016 09:02

hang on in there darling

AnnettePrice · 25/10/2016 09:19

Hi, I've not checked in for a while.
Good to see your all doing so well Smile

Darling it could be many things, could your body be fighting off a cold and zapping your energy?
When I don't feel like I'm going to do well on a run I choose my easy route, it's flat and the path is easy to run on (compacted dirt not tarmac). do you run with music? I do find music that has a beat that I can run to helps me, sort of works like a metronome.

Empress So sorry to hear your news Flowers . Definitely a fitting way to honour your friend.
See you on the B210k thread in a few weeks.
Did W8R2 on Saturday. I was out and about so ended up running along Worthing promenade. Lovely and sunny, lots of other runners who all smiled, waved or nodded their heads, loads of walkers to overtake. Very different from my usual runs, it was nice having a change and I'm sure my face slightly caught the sun. Unfortunately 4.65k of tarmac running is not what my ankles are used to, so 2 days off rather than 1 and I should be out again today.

AnnettePrice · 25/10/2016 09:30

Darling I forgot to say.
Stop with the working out your pace.Grin
I have done most of the runs so slow that my DC can walk them faster (he does have longer legs than me, honest). You are the tortoise not the hare (that's what I tell myself).
I would say at least 2/3 of the c25k is about your body getting used to the running, not how fast you can run. That will come much later.

mother is it worth checking that your sports bra is good enough (fit and support)?

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 25/10/2016 11:27

Yes try an interval app where you can set up in between runs, so that you think you are still progressing even when you can't move on. You might even have to go back a bit, if you've overextended yourself getting to this point.

i was out again this morning, completed the last of my Stage 5 runs! But some burning pain still in my shins/ankles, which is a bad sign for carrying on. Will try the next one and see. Have to create my Stage 6 list now, which is going to be the same amount of running (total of 25 min) but trying to delay the walking bit so that the first interval is longer and the second shorter. The last one is already short!

I hate wearing leggings in public but I do. They are special ones that are supposed to help back/core muscles. they cost a lot, but seem to help my backache. But they roll down a bit on me, probably better for flatter stomached people!

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 25/10/2016 12:47

Thanks Annette & Mother.

It looks like even if I don't get a charity place on the 10K I can sign up independently so I think it's happening.

Mother & Crotchet, hope you're both better soon.

HepKestrel · 25/10/2016 20:10

W3r2 done!!

My thighs felt quite tight on the first 90s and 3 min run, but I felt really good on the final 3 min...so I kept running.... I did 5 mins!

I now have a 2 day rest before w3r3 on Friday.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 25/10/2016 20:25

YAY Kestrel! Well done!!!

AnnettePrice · 25/10/2016 21:25

Mother and Crochet hope you get yourselves sorted soon.

W8R3 Done
A little ankle niggle but overall it went ok. Friday, W9.
Can't believe I'm almost there.

AnnettePrice · 25/10/2016 21:30

Well done on w8 Annette

ScarlettDarling · 26/10/2016 18:40

Did week 5 run 3 today...the dreaded 20 min run, yay!!😃😃😃😃

Bit concerned though that my average speed per mile has gone down from 12 mins 28 secs last week (doing week 5 run 2,) to 13 mins 4 secs today. Basically I was walking faster last week than I was running today!! Surely that can't be good?

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 26/10/2016 19:14

Well done Scarlett!

I had that too, got further on W5R2 with the walk in the middle than I did on the 20 min run. It was weird but the only explanation I could think of is that I was pacing myself really carefully on the run to make sure I lasted. Could that explain it for you?
