Oh n Thanks for the Well Dones!!

GettinTrimmer · 09/04/2016 13:10

Hi, I have just done my first parkrun, and feeling proud of myself! I came in fairly close to the last runner, did it in 45 minutes. Great atmosphere, everyone was really friendly. It is a new parkrun, gorgeous location, we ran along a path by the shore.

I feel like I'd like to go every week, and run during the week to improve my PB.

GeoffreysGoat · 09/04/2016 13:13

No running here, damn you fickle 3yo!!

backinschool · 09/04/2016 13:41

I did my first ever parkrun this morning. It wasn't easy - we ran around a race course so you could see the whole route and it looked such a long way, even though I knew I had managed 5k twice before. I made it round in 35 minutes which I'm really proud of and I only had one quick 30sec walking break. Everyone was really friendly and encouraging. I'll definitely do it again.

AnxiousAlice · 09/04/2016 13:44

Well done backinschool!!! 38 mins for me, very pleased as the hills were plentiful, I will be heading back next week with the hope of improvement Grin

Tanaqui · 09/04/2016 13:56

I did my 5th today and went under 25min for the first time so am chuffed to bits! Any training tips on how to speed up- I am a slow and steady runner, and better at longer distances really!

feetheart · 09/04/2016 15:25

Wow, lots of first timers today, brilliant.
Well done to AnxiousAlice, GettinTrimmer and backinschool on your first runs and swampytiggaa on your first volunteering slot :o
parkrun is THE place to be on a Saturday morning!

We had a slightly calmer day than last week - no course record, no dramas, no rain, no issues with results. Possibly I was too full of last night's parkrun curry to be bothered anyway :)
Next week will NOT be calm as Alice in Wonderland will be taking over the park for our 1st birthday - Mad Hatter's Tea Party anyone?

Blatherskite · 09/04/2016 21:34

I managed to run parkrun this morning!! Grin

It was my first run since I sprained my ankle so I wanted to take it slowly. Chose a nice, fairly flat course on paths and stuck with my sister-in-law to force me to take it easy and it all went fine. I had an ache but it wasn't at all painful and doesn't seem to have swelled up at all so I think I was ready. SiL is a physical therapist so was the perfect buddy and was telling me that POLICE-ing is the new RICE-ing. It stands for Progressive Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression and Elevation and advocates gentle exercise as soon as you can weight bear to rebuild muscle faster. Going to have another rest day tomorrow and then attempt to slowly get back into my normal routine once the kids are back at school from Monday. My brother took DS round and he got another new PB! I'll not be able to keep up soon!!

CaptainWarbeck · 10/04/2016 06:27

Well done tanaqui - I managed 25.05 so just over, argh those extra 5 seconds are sooo annoying! Also want to know how to speed up.

Ran my first 2k nice and fast but couldn't maintain it and had a sloooow 4th k. Then sprinted at the end and nearly died afterwards, although I overtook loads of runners

I definitely need some tips on running a more strategic parkrun!

HalleLouja · 10/04/2016 06:35

So Bushy.., I didn't set any records but had a nice steady run. Loved the fact it was one loop. As for the double funnel I am not sure how that works but I got to hold a sign. Grin

I met a man who was going to be doing his 150th parkrun whilst in the queue for my bacon but tie on his 75th birthday plus his wife. He had just done a parkrun in Florida.

If you are going to go get there early. That is all.

I have been trying to see if I can get a costume for Luton's parkrun next week. I think we are going to stay home as DS still isn't that well and needs a proper break.

HalleLouja · 10/04/2016 06:38

The only thing is at the finish line not many people are there due to th really long funnel so we were the only people cheering at the end.

chutneypig · 10/04/2016 06:50

Glad to hear it Blathers great idea to have a slower pacer, I'm sure that helped.

Did you see any deer Halle? I'm not sure how the funnels worked either but was definitely in awe of the level of organisation.

Sounds like you've got a full on week getting that ready feet

Big hello to AnxiousAlice, GetinTrimmer and backinschool and well done on your first run.

Whilst I can't pretend to aspire to the dizzy heights of 25 minutes CaptainWarbeck and tanaqui I have found treadmill intervals have really helped me, but there was a lot of space for improvement Grin. I'm planning on experimenting on the DC now it's lighter with similar on the school field.

Glad you enjoyed it swampytigga

Just realised reading about everyone's first runs that it will be a year ago next weekend that I did my first parkrun, my second ever 5k. Now, first HM today. Possibly slightly less nervous about today but I'm not sure!

MelanieCheeks · 10/04/2016 08:00

Good that you're back running Blathers, don't push yourself too much.

Getting to hold a sign at Bushy is a special treat!

Going faster - do lots of different kinds of training runs, long runs, hills, sprints. And do strength/ core work.

I've got the Titanic Quarter 10k today, it'll be the 4th or 5th year I've done it (must check my previous times).

MelanieCheeks · 10/04/2016 08:00

Oh and have a good HM Chutney!

thewavesofthesea · 10/04/2016 08:13

ParkRun number 5 for me yesterday. All runs so far around 36mins. Would love to get faster, any hints? I had a 5 day running gap this week which may have made a difference.

And I asked last month if my ParkRun sounded fast (everyone this week finished under 40 mins!)

I think I have worked out part of the reason; there is approx 2:1 male to female ratio - only about 50 females and over 100 men.

lastqueenofscotland · 10/04/2016 08:25

Halle i'd love to do Bushy, would you recommend?

chutneypig · 10/04/2016 08:41

That was about where I started thewavesofthesea and I knocked a couple of minutes off that fairly quickly then stalled for the rest of last year. I started training for the HM at Christmas, followed a plan that feet recommended (I think it was feet, apologies if not!). So since I've done parkrun on a Saturday, long run on Sunday, working up to ten miles and one speed interval session. To fit that in I did it on a treadmill and actually kept it quite short. 1/2 km slow, 1/2 km fast and did that twice with a cool down at the end. Never lasted longer than 25 minutes. I've gradually increased the fast speed. I am rubbish at pushing myself but fear of flying off kept me going, I saw an impact on my parkrun times after a couple of weeks. I can do under thirty now on a good day.

We really enjoyed Bushey when we went earlier in the year lastqueen. Very flat course and although it was obviously really busy it didn't feel too cramped if that makes sense. It can be tricky with the DC if there's a huge number but it felt fine so I hope that'd translate for you faster folks.

HalleLouja · 10/04/2016 20:09

LastQueen if you have a chance then you should really do it. It's like a military operation.

We saw deer as we were driving in. They were well camouflaged and originally looked like there were about 10 but were more like 50.

Just remembered that dd has a gymnastics trial on Saturday morning if DH will take her then I will come to parkrun feet. Blinking kids.

cinnamongreyhound · 10/04/2016 21:20

Loving seeing all you new parkrunners, it's fab!

I was 79th out of 88 this week! Was 2 mins late which didn't help! Coughed almost constantly through the first mile then intermittently through the rest, felt better the rest of the day though. Also our RD forgot to charge the scanner, whoops 🙈

We have a wedding that we have to travel to next Saturday so no parkrun for me Sad

swampytiggaa · 12/04/2016 20:47

Well fingers crossed I am planning on going to a running group tomorrow night. Hopefully it will help me and be a bit of fun.

Plus I have re-started c25k but as slow/fast run rather than walk/run which is fun!

Looking forward to Saturday :)

Blatherskite · 12/04/2016 21:08

RIP Little Stoke parkrun and Little Stoke juniors Sad

MelanieCheeks · 12/04/2016 21:16

Such a bad decision!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/04/2016 21:24

What's the implications of that do you rhink? Will all parks start charging. So, so wrong IMO Sad

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/04/2016 21:25

Or councils, rather than the parks themselves.

123rd · 12/04/2016 21:42

Just seen the vote results. Pretty poor imo. I really hope that doesn't encourage other councils to follow suit.
