This is a continuation of the parkrunning thread where are all are welcome to chat about tourism, tee-shirts, PBs and everything else parkrun (and sometimes non-parkrun) related.

If you have been lurking on a previous thread now is the time to come out and say hello Grin. Like parkrun we're very inclusive and always welcoming to new starters Smile. And we love hearing about new courses we haven't been to Smile

Prompted by the to other thread I have been and had a look at all those 5-6ish London parkrun result local to the OP. I am not surprised she is a bit worried, they are all smaller (100-150) and way faster than the parkrun I know and love. Is London more elitist? Are we more relaxed in the regions? This MUST be putting people off!!! Thoughts? One for parkrun HQ to discuss maybe.

Blatherskite · 04/01/2016 11:14

Welcome Enkopkaffetak. I was tail runner at my local junior parkrun yesterday which is run around the pitch of a rugby club precisely because the club felt that it would be a perfect training environment and warm up for their junior teams and so were keen to allow the event to use their facilities.

I ended up doing 4 parkruns in 3 days last weekend. 2 on New Years Day, 1 with DS on Saturday and tail running (and I did actually have to run some of it!) at junior parkrun on Sunday. None of them were hugely fast but I covered 17k so I'm happy that 2016's training has started off well.

steppemum · 04/01/2016 12:59

way to go Blathers - for someone who hasn't run for ages that was going in at the deep end!

Bah - dh has just gone out for his Monday run (he works from home) and I am still limping. Not a happy bunny. (it is better, just not better enough fast enough)

chutneypig · 05/01/2016 06:57

We were fast tail runners Sunday so it was a little more energetic than I'd banked on. We had the biggest turn out I've seen it was great despite the mud. The course uses a bit of the 5k route which took a pummelling e previous two days.

I confess I looked carefully at time before my first parkrun and it would probably have out me off. I wonder why it is in London. But I wouldn't be surprised if it is putting people off.

I'm glad you're feeling a bit better steppe but it must be so frustrating.

Hats off Blathers. Two parkruns nearly finished me off, great way to start the year though.

sweetvparsley · 05/01/2016 22:15

Oh dear, I have just found out that the Darley parkrun in Derby, which is on my 'to do' list has been suspended for the foreseeable future because the route is too wet and the park is getting damaged by all the runners. I am fairly new to parkrunning. Does this happen often? worries that the same thing might happen locally and I won't get the regular Saturday fix

steppemum · 06/01/2016 10:41

Ours gets closed occasionally when there are other events in the park. But we usually have a few weeks notice.

MelanieCheeks · 06/01/2016 10:58

Gets closed once a year for the Lord Mayors parade, so plenty of notice on that one. Occasionally cancelled due to ice during winter months - once or twice, maybe.

Blatherskite · 06/01/2016 20:50

Ours is cancelled now and again (two or three times a year at most) usually when Women's Bloody Running insist on putting on their 10k on our course on a Saturday morning at 10am.

No way we can run as their stuff is everywhere Angry

I've never run it as I've been an RD since before they started and it feels like betrayal.

I have a meeting in Exeter this Saturday which is a 3 and a half hour drive from home so I have booked a hotel nearby for Friday night and will (obviously) be scouting out a local parkrun in the morning before my meeting. I have a choice of Killerton or Exeter, anyone have any experience and can help me choose?

cinnamongreyhound · 06/01/2016 21:08

We've cancelled once due to a bike race, not bad as its our third birthday in March Smile

feetheart · 06/01/2016 23:35

Had to cancel twice so far (in 8 months) - once for Carnival and once for the Mela.
Actually had a runner who is part of the Council Events team contact me today to say he reckoned they could work around us for Carnival this year - I hadn't even thought about it yet as it's in May! And the Mela will be back to a 1 day event this year not 2 so shouldn't affect us.
I can see us having to cancel for ice though.

sweetvparsley · 07/01/2016 06:56

It looks like the Derby Parkrun is not just cancelled for the time being but they are also looking for a new venue:

feetheart · 07/01/2016 07:08

Don't panic too much, it doesn't sound too bad, just the current conditions and parkrunners being mindful of their impact on the park. I have a feeling that some more may be looking at alternatives this winter.
Medina in the Isle of White move around rather a lot to allow their course to recover from the Isle of White Festival. I know they encourage any tourists to find out exactly where their course is if they are visiting :o

cinnamongreyhound · 07/01/2016 14:37

I have just discovered there's a parkrun on the way to mil so next time sil suggests a Saturday visit I'll have to work on dh to be at that point by 8.45 Wink

steppemum · 07/01/2016 14:55

ok, advice needed from you lovely ladies.

How much better should my knee be before I run on it?

It is much better, doesn't hurt when I walk, but does still hurt going up and down stairs, and definitely isn't right yet, so not planning on running just yet.

But what is a good guideline? Does it have to be completely better? Is that the sensible route?
I was half thinking of walking parkrun this week, just to feel that I am not sitting on my backside all week. But I want to do the sensible thing and not strain it again.

MelanieCheeks · 08/01/2016 12:00

I'm not a doctor, but the more rest you can give it the better. If it's giving you ANY pain at all, I'd not push it.

OK techy question for the parkrun stats fans.

I'll be moving into the next age-category this year. How does this affect my position in various age-category records? Are they compiled at time of running, or at current age? Eg if I was 1st in my age category record at Run A, but then after my birthday am I still shown there, or does my name disappear from there and re-appear in the next one up?

steppemum · 08/01/2016 12:50

I am guessing, but logic would say that if you ran parkrun A aged 39, then it remains in the 30-39 category, because you were 39 when you ran it.

Then you turn 40, next time you run it, you will be in the 40-49 category

MelanieCheeks · 08/01/2016 14:40

I don't mean on the weekly run stats, I mean in the records tables. Say I was lucky enough to hold the 50-54 age cat record at Valley, my name appears at the top of that table. After my 55th birthday, is my name still shown on the 50-54 table, or do all my run times move with me into the 55-60 category?

cinnamongreyhound · 08/01/2016 16:21

I would expect you to stay in the table at the age you were when you set the record so you could set a new one in the next category too.

I would run on it steppemum, make it a small one and if it gets too painful then reduce down to walk. But that's just me, may not be the right thing to do!

MelanieCheeks · 09/01/2016 07:40

We shall see what happens later this year Smile

DH has a rare free Saturday, so he's coming with me today to take photos (I believe the showcase this week will be Mud, so if you have any muddy snaps make sure to share them on the main parkrun UK facebook page)

Looking further ahead, Carrick's 2nd birthday is coming up, and they want people dressed in pairs. So I'm trying to decide what Minnie and I should go as - Dorothy and Toto? Minnie and Pluto? (I already have a Minnie Mouse dress) Dick Dastardly and Muttley? Thing 1 and 2? (already have T shirts and indeed the blue wigs) Tom and Jerry?

reallyneedmoresleep · 09/01/2016 08:16

Melanie, I'm impressed with your dedication to dressing up! A funny thing happened at my local parkrun. It was recently the 100th run so it was decided we should dress up as centurions. All great, except that some people misheard and thought the theme was St Trinians.... The photos that week were ace!
Anyway, I just logged on to look for some inspiration to get out on this cold and soggy morning. Brrrrr

ThursdayLastWeek · 09/01/2016 08:22

Morning all Smile

No parkrun for me this morning, we are going to a fundraising breakfast instead. At 31 weeks the prospect of having someone cook me a fry up trumps dragging my bump around Lanhydrock!

I hope you all have good runs. Not you though steppe I think you should do some more resting.

steppemum · 09/01/2016 09:34

enjoy your breakfast thursday!

I am not running. I drove for about 45 minutes yesterday, and there is something about driving that catches it at the wrong angle. It was quite uncomfortable afterwards, so I figure it isn't ready to run on.
Dh saw the weather forecast and has chickened out! (seriously heavy rain)

cinnamongreyhound · 09/01/2016 10:49

We had 88 again this morning! I got a post bump pb of I think 27:05 Grin. Lovely crisp morning here but very muddy in place, we had no photographers today.

chutneypig · 09/01/2016 11:01

I like Thing One and Thing Two Melanie. Have been known to dress the offspring up but they didn't like the wigs Grin

Well done cinnamon. That's brilliant.

That sounds sensible steppe, keep on resting.

Also sensible for you Thursday! Enjoy!

Record attendance for us this morning. Lovely morning today here, twelve seconds away from hitting my PB. I didn't realise I was on track until quite late and had nothing left to push at the end. But I was pretty pleased, it was a very slow start as the funnel was in a right state plus with so many more there, would have hit it had it been another week. Plus it was about six minutes off my time last week Grin

MelanieCheeks · 09/01/2016 11:01

Still giggling at Centurions!

It poured here, felt very sorry for the volunteers (and DH) standing in the rain. Managed a reasonable time, best one for a few weeks, and was able to jump in and assist with the scanning to get through the mid-run bulge. DH got chatting to one of our stalwart older gents, who was one of his teachers at skool!
