This is a continuation of the parkrunning thread where are all are welcome to chat about tourism, tee-shirts, PBs and everything else parkrun (and sometimes non-parkrun) related.

If you have been lurking on a previous thread now is the time to come out and say hello Grin. Like parkrun we're very inclusive and always welcoming to new starters Smile. And we love hearing about new courses we haven't been to Smile

actually I was thinking about it last night and it wasn't months, it was weeks. Which should be encouraging to you, that over a few weeks you can get to the point where you could push on past 5k

reallyneedmoresleep · 24/11/2015 01:06

Hello everyone. Blimey it was cold on Saturday! We set up in actual snow AND I forgot my gloves. DS2 lasted about 40 minutes the ran back to the car crying. However, I loved my first time marshalling. It was interesting to see the effortless technique of the fast runners, but I was totally moved by the effort of the folk at the back who were really struggling but were out there and doing it. I thought they were brilliant and I had a little cry.

feetheart · 24/11/2015 06:57

Well done reallyneedmoresleep, especially in that weather and without gloves Shock
Not surprised you had a little cry, parkrun, and parkrunners, are a pretty amazing lot. We have only been going since April but have some great stories already and I'm not above a little tear every now and again :)

Sorry, I seemed to have missed your milestone 59 - HUGE congratulations. You must bring yourself and your 100 shirt to visit soon, especially as I should have my 25 shirt by this weekend now that they have more stock :)

FlightlessBird · 24/11/2015 16:25

The volunteers at my parkrun are amazing! I'm only on my second run (but can already see how addictive it is Wink ) the amount of cheering, clapping and just general encouragement is just so sweet. It absolutely makes me run further!
What happens when you volunteer for the first time? Does someone show you the ropes?

feetheart · 24/11/2015 17:52

Flightlessbird - yes, you are shown what to do. I started with marshalling (a loud voice and lots of clapping and cheering is all that's needed :)) then I worked my way round the rest of the jobs. Out injured now so lots of volunteering for me (and no NYD run :()

steppemum · 24/11/2015 21:00

Sad to being injured feetheart.

reallyneedsmoresleep, on saturday I marshaled and there was a lady at the back - the rest of the runners went past in dribs and drabs and there was a full 5 minute gap. I was beginning to think I had missed the tail runner, then this lady came through, she ran every step, but SOO slowly that the tail runner was walking behind her. There was a parkrun volunteer with her and she was clapped in by every marshal. Everyone waited for her to finish. She was very over weight and not very young. I cheered her so much as she went past!

FiftyNineOhEight · 24/11/2015 21:14

Sorry to hear you are injured feet Cake Flowers Brew - I will deffo come and see y'all soon. I can't order my tee shirt yet, my size is out of stock. My 50 took such a long time to come that I don't mind getting a bit more wear out of it.

steppe we have a lady like that too. She is so determined and always gets a big cheer. This week we had a whole family tail walking, including a toddler who walked the whole way. We were all in the cafe (which is at the top of our finishing straight when they finished and there was a collective "awwwwwww" when they came in Smile

feetheart · 24/11/2015 22:52

59 - I had to wait for my 25 t-shirt as they were out of stock but it was only for about a month. I should have it by this w/e :o :o :o

We now have a walking group of people in their 70s, most of whom are ex-athletes who have had one or more hips replaced each. And then there is 4 yr old Billy who was desperate to join the rest of his family at parkrun (Mum, Dad, brother and sister) Two weeks after his 4th birthday he did his first one and ran The Whole Way - I think most of the people in the finishing area had something in their eye as he crossed the line :)
So many stories.

chutneypig · 25/11/2015 06:52

Oh no feet Sad

DDs 10 T shirt came yesterday, she was thrilled as I'd not told her it was in stock.

The juniors always make me aww. The little ones who try so hard and keep smiling.

FiftyNineOhEight · 25/11/2015 09:20

I must get DS1 to organize his 10 shirt. He is always complaining about not having enough sports gear/needing to launder his stuff. He is coming home this weekend for the first time since starting university this year.

feetheart · 25/11/2015 14:23

59 - I'd like a big and little 10 t-shirt photo (your DS and mine) :o
Then we can have a 2x10, 25 and 100 photo :)

cinnamongreyhound · 25/11/2015 16:45

Are you out for a long time feetheart? I think I know who you are from post on the parkrun ed page Blush

So lovely hearing all these parkrun stories! I have swapped weekends so I am running at home this weekend then off to my mums for my birthday celebrations with my family.

feetheart · 25/11/2015 17:02

Ah, I don't think it's hard cinnamon but a bit weird when worlds collide. I'm pretty sure I know who you are too :o

Physio says 6-12 weeks but thinks closer to the 6 end as I have done well in the 2 weeks since I did it. Sprained ankle (and bashed up finger) from an unlucky encounter with the edge of a path, just one of those things :(
No running at all until at least after Christmas so lots of volunteering, at least it helps to fill the roster!

FiftyNineOhEight · 25/11/2015 18:13

Oh yes feet that would be good picture! I'm so sorry, I didn't realise your injury was so bad. So you won't be Bedford HM'ing with me in two weeks Sad

Happy birthday cinners Cake!

steppemum · 25/11/2015 21:33

I thought the first T shirt for adults was 50?
What is all this about a 25 shirt?

(hopeful emoticon)

cinnamongreyhound · 25/11/2015 21:43

Sorry to disappoint steppemum it's for 25 volunteering stints.

FiftyNineOhEight · 25/11/2015 21:45

steppe the 25 tee-shirt is for volunteering Smile

cinners and feet are both event/race directors (as is I think Blathers, who is hardly ever here these days) so have volunteered lots Smile

I'm only half way to mine - am aiming to hit 20 parkruns and earn my volunteer shirt next year Smile

FiftyNineOhEight · 25/11/2015 21:46

x-post Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 26/11/2015 06:10

Slap on wrist for fiftynineoheight, we are RUN directors, parkrun is not a race Wink

Blatherskite · 26/11/2015 09:35

Blathers is indeed a RUN director. Twice, as I do it for both parkrun and junior parkrun.

I got my purple shirt a few weeks ago. Later than expected as you have to do 25 different volunteering events so all those times I was RD and Pre Event Setup and Funnel Manager when we were desperate didn't count!

cinnamongreyhound · 26/11/2015 09:54

I do multiple jobs often too Blatherskite, although I think per event is fair. I think 25 is a bit low but then as parkrun ask for 3 stints a year it would take a while!

Supposed to be getting out pacer bibs this morning, I'm quite excited but also feel they're a bit of a waste of time as we never have pacers and usually 60-80 runners, it's seems a bit daft! I'd be rubbish at pacing but may ask some other runners if they fancy it. I'd quite like a Fitbit actually Smile, not random they are sponsoring the bibs!

feetheart · 26/11/2015 11:53

cinnamon - did I miss a birthday? Bibs have arrived here and some slightly boring new tape :o
Pacing doesn't have to be a big event. When we did Portrush in the summer they had 3 pacers (at 25, 28 and 30 mins) and it seemed that it was quite a usual thing for them.
We will use them (and probably make a big thing of it to start with :)) as there has been a fair bit of chat about us having a pacing event.

59 - I didn't realise injury was so bad either but physio was very good at explaining things and if I want it to heal properly then it will take time :(. Had thought I would do Bedford instead of St Neots which I had to cancel but looks like my 3 half marathon challenge this Autumn will have to stop at two. I have managed to raise about £500 for the RNLI so will do a call out and then finish the fundraising.

Barcode scanning tomorrow and probably writing the run report as the RD on duty don't like doing it and I do

feetheart · 26/11/2015 11:54

don't??? DOESN'T - need brain and fingers to be unison Hmm

cinnamongreyhound · 26/11/2015 13:10

It's Monday feetheart but i mentioned going to my mums after parkrun for my birthday gathering with my family Smile

Blatherskite · 26/11/2015 16:43

I agree cinnamon, it just confused me as my volunteer count showed more than 25 but I still wasn't eligible for the shirt as the athlete page shows jobs done not events done.
