Woo! How exciting to be the last on one thread and the first on another!

OP posts:
PoppyShakespeare · 10/03/2015 21:31

yes here I am cinnamon! I thought of you today when I read that lynx might be introduced to Thetford Forest, I will definitely run there more often if it goes ahead!

I'd just got the all clear to resume run/walk after the calf strain when I found out my thyroid was overactive which explained quite a lot of things - not likely to make up for lost training in time for May marathon but hopefully will be on course for the 50k in kings forest this autumn

Suzannewithaplan · 10/03/2015 21:34

I'm no where near yogi Nora's level Edith, but I do really like pigeon, especially to lie down and relax into.
I also like to do a quad strength with the back leg, I take my foot and press towards buttock of the same leg?

SummerHouse · 10/03/2015 21:56

I can't say for sure but I think I ran about 7.5k and it was great. As suggested I even did some accelerations. And as predicted a shoe lace did come undone and it was annoying indeed. You gang are wise! Thank you again for advice and encouragement.

emummy · 10/03/2015 22:02

Well done SummerHouse, sounds like you're back on track.
Impressed with all this yoga talk! Did my first class today, really enjoyed it. Legs a bit stiff, but my shoulders feel great!

SummerHouse · 10/03/2015 22:08

Thank you emummy

I think I was never on track until now. Now I have a plan set out on the blackboard in my kitchen.

stilllearnin · 10/03/2015 22:41

I am just back from some epic pigeoning at yoga and tomorrow will be intervals (hopefully). I have massively lost confidence and have somehow developed a huge insecurity about whether I look a fool as I am not young or slim. This is not like me really - particularly when it comes to exercise, which I have always enjoyed. I could not bring myself to go out at the weekend or yesterday as planned in case somebody saw Shock need to nip that one in the bud - that's for sure.

Suzannewithaplan · 10/03/2015 23:20

Stilllearnin, I'm pretty sure some people look at me and think 'why is that mad old woman shuffling along like that'
I get some very funny looks

far as Im concerned I'm linked in with the collective consciousness of runners...vibrating on a higher frequency, it must be so since they are all in hats and coats and I'm too hot in one thin layer.

You cant let self consciousness put you off, you'll miss out on all those endorphins!

EdithDickie · 11/03/2015 06:23

Stilllearning I'm sorry you're feeling like that. Strikes me at times too and I have a massive fit of insecurity! Especially as the people from work I run with are all much faster (like SO much faster!), thinner and younger than me. But I force myself to go anyway, always feel better afterwards and, remind myself how far I have come and am back to normal (faux swaggering arrogance lol) in no time!

emummy · 11/03/2015 08:25

stilllearnin I'm not young or slim either and am also tall so feel I do stick out! However, I think most people don't really notice runners as much as we think they do. And anyway, are they all slim and gorgeous? Definitely not! So I hope you manage to get out again and enjoy the running.

Suzannewithaplan · 11/03/2015 08:49

runners ime are all shapes, sizes, speeds and ages!

Naicecuppatea · 11/03/2015 09:42

I always look at runners with a sense of envy that I am not with them running right then! I don't give a poo what anyone thinks about me, I am too busy swearing under my breath while I run (does anyone else do that?!) and concentrating Smile, then I know how much better I'll feel for having done it afterwards.

Stilllearning you must do it if it makes you happy and don't worry what anyone thinks!

Sazorchard31 · 11/03/2015 10:00

runtothehills I can't find the motivation to do interval training so I.don't, but I have started doing classes at the gym such as hiit and boot camp, plus a quick 0.5 - 1 mile at target pace on the treadmill brfore a class, and as a result of these my speed has improved. Had to increase my target pace on the treadmill from 10km/h to 12 this week so something is working!!

I think anything that makes your body work harder can be used a substitute for running intervals.

cinnamongreyhound · 11/03/2015 11:53

I posted this morning but it's gone! stilllearnin I don't know about yoga but certainly among runners anyone running is respected by all other abilities and most people who aren't runners just think you're mad for not being in the sofa, especially this time of year out in the cold and dark.

stilllearnin · 11/03/2015 12:05

Right, I have double knotted my laces and I am going out there. Just 25 mins for lunch, but that should be enough time to link into the collective consciousness and also get some swearing in ( I really like the idea of that as I don't swear on mn or in the house but I bloody love it)

HesterShaw · 11/03/2015 12:09

Hello everyone. I went away for a bit on my holidays and the kind of lost the habit of posting. Hope everyone is well.

No running in the land of Ice - more like cautious shuffling over sheet ice, so I didn't have a run for a week or so. However I was amazed when I started again that I was rested and found it easier. Is that what marathon runners do the week or so before a race? Tapering do they call it?

575.31 + 2.6 = 577.91

Tomorrow I'm going to do a flat route and do 5k no matter what, even if I then find myself far from home. Living up a hill has some disadvantages.

There was a thing going round on FB yesterday on the Fat Girl's Guide to running about how self conscious women felt while running particular when there are photos being taken. I figured that photos catch one tiny moment in time and people often look nothing like that in motion, as it were. Besides, who cares?!

5madthings · 11/03/2015 12:32

Norwich/norfolk peeps just seen here is a new 10km race around norwich city centre this aug, online entries not yet open but there is a form to express interest. Will try and share the link but cant get my tablet to do it at moment. It looks fab.

sazor thats a great increase in pace!

I really need to work on my oace i noticed on my run yesterday that breathing wise i could sing along to my music. I do 10km in 64/65 mins so just over 10 mins a mile and its an easy pace to maintian but i am not pushing myself. I just did a shout out for other norwich runnners near me to see if anyone wants to get together to do intervals etc as i thinj i need to do it with someone so i push myself as its too easy to just run at what is a very comfortable pace.

Re what you look like i dont think about it normally, but yesterday a young woman ran past me, she ws taller and slimmer snd only looked late teens, early twenties but she just made it look effortless and i thouht ffs. I end up very red, partLy due to my eczema and sort of plod along but who cares i am out and running snd i enjoy it. I said to dp yesterday i have found the last few weeks really hard and getting out the door hard but as soon as i run up he road i think yes i like this! I enjoy it genrelaly and feel so good when i get in from a run but why is it so hard to motivate myself to do it? Tbh my motivation is lacking in all areas at moment, not just running but arghh i feel so much better for dojng it and then everything else in life seems better iyswim? I just need to ignore that gremlin in my head that says it doesnt want to run!

PoppyShakespeare · 11/03/2015 12:46

I saw that run norwich thing on our stowmarket striders FB page, is going in the race diary for the club - looks good

reading Runner's World is v bad, as all magazines and some websites are, for every article having a fit young woman in tiny shorts as illustration - she always has a shiny bouncy ponytail and tanned legs with no cellulite

IrianofWay · 11/03/2015 12:46

Another 3.1 last night. Don't have any stamina so I am sticking to short runs most days (well at least 5 a week). 581.01

Anglaise1 · 11/03/2015 12:48

Intervals are horrible to do on your own, much easier to do with other people which is why the club sessions are so useful. They are important in running to train your body to get rid of lactate acid by helping your heat beat more efficiently so that you suffer less from muscle pain and can run longer and faster. I'm not sure any runners would do them if they didn't do some good as they aren't that much fun!
Just run, don't worry about what you look like. The important thing is that you are making an effort - other people are just jealous because they lack your motivation especially when it is cold and wet.

Sazorchard31 · 11/03/2015 13:05

5madthings I could only maintain that pace for 0.5miles though! But I struggled with the slower pace a few weeks ago and that's kind of becoming g normal.pace now.

I try and ignore what others look like, it makes me feel like an out of breath fool for thinking I can run. Hate passing male runners who.are going at super speeds too, think I must look so slow plodding along nearly dying!

5madthings · 11/03/2015 13:25

Re clibs i have seen there is one thta meets near me, well 2 miles but i cpuld bike there and so warm up, do the club and then cycle home to cool down. The problem is dps shifts mean i cant commit to every week. But i am def going to look into it just a bit nervous of running with proper runners, but they say all abilities welcome.

5madthings · 11/03/2015 13:28

Actually looking at their website they have few near me, early evenings i just need to sort it out with dps shifts, i will give them a ring.

stilllearnin · 11/03/2015 13:29

Well I have 2 miles for you so 579.91 thank you I do feel better for it. It is the effortless that I see about me (teenagers in my street training for national squad, neighbour competing in endurance races) that makes me feel foolish. Thing is, I am the person that can't understand people feeling self conscious in a swim suit - you are swimming so of course it looks ok, if you were doing a weekly shop, not so. but yes I have set myself a modest weekly mileage goal...and once again really must change my route!!

cinnamongreyhound · 11/03/2015 13:30

My friend is really struggling at the moment HesterShaw she's studying for her pgce so not a lot of time for exercise or eating well and there was a pic taken at parkrun a few weeks ago that has made her go on a diet as she reckons she looked bigger than me! She's since seen last weeks parkrun (I tailran so wasn't with her) where she apparently looks like a blob so it's keeping her on track she reckons Sad

Don't know if August is ambitious 5madthings! My favourite race is end June and is 5 miles but I'm thinking that's very soon too!

5madthings · 11/03/2015 13:34

cinamon are you meaning ambitious post baby? Given you are still running i think you wpuld be fine for thr aug one. Its the very end of aug. But you will just have to see how you feel post birth etc. Its sometimes nice to have a goal and 10km is a good one i think.
