they died of skin cancer according to an American report, out for longer and more often than the other runners

will try and obtain link

Suzannewithaplan · 04/02/2015 09:04

so running is good...but only with sunblock:o

Mitchy1nge · 04/02/2015 09:08

yeah!

don't know how true it is, have requested more info but seems legit

(are we still talking about the Danish study?)

5madthings · 04/02/2015 09:13

Well I tend to run in the evening when it's not sunny anyway...

Surely the risk is from sunburn which you can preven, not running per say!

Hi, can I join please? Found this thread a couple of days ago and it's great to see other runners chat.
Love the pace/mph mix up. I did this when I tried out new shoes in a running shop and assistant asked me what pace I ran. I said about 6.5 ( meaning mph) and he looked at me in confusion and polite disbelief ( I clearly don't look like an elite runner Sad )
It's a good job he made his own decision about what speed to set the treadmill or I'd have gone flying off the end Grin

Can I add my miles to the Feb tally? I am just back from a lovely 6.5 m, light dusting of fresh snow on ground, very pretty.
( I also did a half marathon on Sun 1st . Is it too late to add that now?)

Suzannewithaplan · 04/02/2015 10:42

yes the danish one, hereks the RW article which also links to his earlier more detailed article on the subject
m.runnersworld.com/health/the-supposed-dangers-of-running-too-much

Suzannewithaplan · 04/02/2015 10:47

?It could be argued that excessive running caused metabolic stress which then predisposed to skin cancer, but they would need to adjust for the underlying cancer risk, ie what would be expected from the level of sun exposure.

It's all moot because the sample size was far too small?

Sazorchard31 · 04/02/2015 11:23

Hi family! Not too late for Feb 1 hm, all Feb miles count!

Hope your hm went well

twobambinos · 04/02/2015 11:27

Welcome family and congrats on your marathon. Why not add it to the Feb total.

I think the sample size is a bit small altho what do I know. I'm happy to take my chances. And anyway im running at about 6.5 miles per hour on a good day and never likely to break any records only my own. Plus I fit into the 1to 2.4 hours running a week most of the year and 2 to 3 times a week.

Sazorchard31 · 04/02/2015 13:25

Nooooooo I think I have shin splints ??
Just been to my local running shop and purchased the most delightful beauties to replace my old trainers. I described ed the plaintive developed in the last week and the lovely lady said it would be shin splints. No no no I'm gutted.

How long till I can run??
Just spent an obscene amount of money on new trainers (if only I'd gone couple of weeks ago) and i want to try them out.

actiongirl1978 · 04/02/2015 13:49

Sazor are your shins really sore? If not I can you just do some strengthening exercises and not go so hard for a little while?

Family welcome! Add in your miles please and keep visiting with miles and chat!

I am adding in four miles for today, it was utterly shite, I started trying to do a tempo run, I ended up doing interval sprints (more fartlek than intervals actually) and then I walked a bit. I blame the half bottle of red wine I had with dinner last night. I don't usually drink the night before I run, so that's my excuse!

actiongirl1978 · 04/02/2015 13:51

242.24

I've added on 20 for Family and my 4

Sazorchard31 · 04/02/2015 13:56

Just my left and its on the inside not down my shin as such. I noticed a slight pain last week after a 5.5mile run but as that was my longest run in about 8 maths I put it down to that. Then doing 3 miles on Mon they hurt, and I pushed myself in terms of speed, half a mile on the treadmill test and now it is killing. I have a 10k in 3.5wks, I'll not run rest of this week but im concerned it won't heal.

I can do strengthening, never have before so suggestions required please!

In the meantime I'll trial new beauties at boxing, boot camp and abs class this week.

Sazorchard31 · 04/02/2015 14:02

Actiongirl remember that even if a bad run it was still a run! Def blame the wine!!

familygermsareok · 04/02/2015 14:38

Thanks for welcoming me in and adding my miles on Smile. Very nice to meet you all ( shakes hands all round).
Fingers crossed for your shins Sazor, it's so frustrating. Have you put some ice on them? Regular icing can really make a difference.
Actiongirl, that sounds like so many of my morning after the night before runs!
I drink so much less now because I know it will give me a crap run the next day. Running has saved my liver too Wink

5madthings · 04/02/2015 15:43

No running here today it's a rest day.

No idea re shin splints, there was another runner on here who had them, I remember her posting, not sure what she did. Maybe she is still here and will post.

Welcome family :)

Can.I hide my parenting fail in here? Today madthing5 has pre school, dp had day off... So no kids! We went back to bed... Ended up falling asleep, and we're woken at 3:20 by the phone, yep pre school calling to see where we were! Mortified! Never have I been late and for us both to have just slept past pick.up!! Luckily we have used pre school for years so they know us and I have apologised snd will get them a bottle of wine or something! But Omg! How crap are we?!!

Sazorchard31 · 04/02/2015 15:55

Oops! I'm sure the time in bed was worth it though!

5madthings · 04/02/2015 15:59

Yes it was Grin but Omg and I was honest with pre school on phone, I was like sorry we went back to bed and must have fallen asleep.. I just didn't think, so now they know... But child free time during the day is very rare... Blush

Suzannewithaplan · 04/02/2015 16:11

12.71 from me
=254.98

Suzannewithaplan · 04/02/2015 16:12

oops
I mean 12.74 from me

Anglaise1 · 04/02/2015 16:46

Welcome Family and congrats on your HM.
7 from me today. Knee hurting a lot from last night's training session so definitely need a rest day tomorrow. I've got an appointment with a physio this evening and my GP tomorrow. The sports doctor in the local hospital is on holiday until end Feb which will be too late to do anything.
Glad to see that the results of that Danish survey have been un proven to some extent. Only one person I know who runs has nearly died from it. Albert was a mad marathonian, ran all the time and very well (he took running up after giving up alcohol). His favourite race was the Marathon des Sables in the Moroccan desert which is one of the ultimate endurance races. He collapsed with a heart attack and only lived because fortunately a doctor was racing behind him and saved his life. He is back running again now, despite nearly dying Hmm

stilllearnin · 04/02/2015 17:01

Mad things nothing shameful in heading back to bed for a quick nap Wink

Sazorchard31 · 04/02/2015 17:06

Will it be 6madthings by the end of the year? Wink

Suzannewithaplan · 04/02/2015 17:17

Good luck with the physio Anglaise!

That was very lucky with Albert.
Who can say though whether it was running that brought on his heart attack?
He may have had one anyway, most people who have heart attacks are not runners.

The only way to know for sure would be to track several thousand 'mad marathonian' types for say 10 years, compare them to similar number of other people who didnt run and analyse the resulting data.

Not that experts can ever agree on exactly how to interpret data anyway Hmm
