I take a Power Gel strawberry and banana flavour if I'm going to be out for more than about an hour and a half.
They are pretty grim, but they don't make me vomit and I find them easier to carry than sweets.
I'm also not sure if they are more effective psychologically than physiologically but they seem to stop me flagging around the 8-9 mile mark.

actiongirl1978 · 26/11/2014 17:57

Oh grim mitchy, don't fancy that much!!

Lucozade a good idea, but I don't run with a drink. Thinking I might have to start...

actiongirl1978 · 26/11/2014 17:59

Cardiff, maybe I will give one a go then and see, but I'll wait until I am on my return to the car or I may end up regretting it!

I was planning on having something somewhere between an hour and an hour fifteen as my runs are getting steadily longer it's something I feel I need to get on top of so I stop worrying about it!

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 26/11/2014 18:08

I think it is trial and error with these things actiongirl. I have tried four or five different gels, sweets and bars.
Definitely to be tested out the first time on your way home though as I speak from experience when I say some refuelling experiments caused a somewhat explosive reaction! BlushGrin

actiongirl1978 · 26/11/2014 18:29

We'll Cardiff, I sympathise as someone who regularly experiences 'gastrointestinal problems' and I have the scratches on my leg where I had to literally climb through a hedge to go to the loo last weekend, thank goodness I live in a very rural area so no one saw me and neither would they find the results..!

Right maybe I will try a few out, I spend my life avoiding sweet sugary stuff as I am not keen with the exception of dark choc, so it will be a change in attitude I think.

It appears I am also having to eat carbs again, simple ones not the ones you get from fruit and veg and nuts, I do feel more efficient for eating some white carbs and apparently it helps with those gastro problems...!

cinnamongreyhound · 26/11/2014 21:12

Who fancies a set of these?

Bagsy the fartlek ones!!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 26/11/2014 21:58

actiongirl - I use tangfastics for fuel on HMs. As cinnamon said a couple of page ago about jelly babies, I just pop one inside my cheek and let it melt. I prefer the sour taste.

I used to use gels, but made the mistake of accidentally getting a box of caffeinated ones once, and while I do like my coffee I just got too wired with the combination of sugars and caffeine.

actiongirl1978 · 26/11/2014 22:35

Ohoneohtwo thanks, yes I have to steer clear of caffeine so will bear that in mind!

Tangfastics - the kids sweet? Would a haribo work?!

Mitchy1nge · 26/11/2014 22:58

I love the rundies!

forgot about the caffeinated gels, definitely achieved a new maximum HR training zone with those but I also thought I might die

actiongirl1978 · 27/11/2014 10:42

Morning everyone, a paltry 3km this morning, with six very good hill sprints mixed in. My legs felt like lead for the entire jog (perhaps because I worked so hard on Tuesday?) Anyway, I have had some fresh air and exercise at least!

Hope everyone who is running today has a more enjoyable time of it!

Mitchy1nge · 27/11/2014 11:57

hill sprints, ugh, well done

PT today but I feel really out of sorts - lack of running, probably, somehow much more tired than usual Confused

actiongirl1978 · 27/11/2014 12:28

Mitch you probably do too much so your taper week is your body letting out a huge sigh of relief! My PT always knocks any tiredness out of me though, I am sure you will be ok. And remember you can eat lots with your run coming up!

Suzannewithaplan · 27/11/2014 12:44

Speaking of 'too much' I'm wondering about the average weekly mileage of people on this thread, how many feel they are on the edge of too much?
I'm currently running 5miles 3 x per week, feel I'd be risking injury if I did more. ?

actiongirl1978 · 27/11/2014 14:00

Suzanne, I am currently working on the 10% thing. I did a mile more this week than last, plus I also do pilates and personal training (for 5 more sessions and I then intend to join the gym and start doing weights myself).

Recently there have been entire weeks where I have been aching and feeling pain, my IT band was super sore, I was foam rolling every night. But I seem to have reached a happy place this week.

My 8mile run on Tuesday left me with some aching quads from the hill, but that was it. So no, I don't think if I stretch the distance I will feel too bad. Having said that I am planning a couple of weeks hovering at the 15m mark just to settle into the distances. I will come back to you once I make the 15 miles and let you know!

Have you had twinges that make you feel that an injury is imminent?

emummy · 27/11/2014 14:24

Wee short run in the muddy woods from me today, so with actiongirl's I think that makes 867.8.

Mitchy1nge · 27/11/2014 14:41

over 30 makes me anxious about aches and pains signalling something sinister, under 20 = mental breakdown

I think 25 is my sweet spot

Suzannewithaplan · 27/11/2014 17:58

Actiongirl, yes I have piriformis/sciatica twinges and ankle issues, I think sticking to every other day and regular yoga is keeping things at bay.

keep thinking about going to see a physio...

A year or so ago I was cruising (or so I thoughtHmm)with 25 miles a week, albeit with background piriformis grumbles when, with no warning my calf gave up the ghostAngry

anyhow I have 5.6 miles to add so thats 873.4

actiongirl1978 · 27/11/2014 18:28

If it was me I'd see a physio if you can afford it. I am tempted by a sports therapy massage just to sort out my it band, but I couldn't go for more than one or two sessions and I think more than that would be beneficial. Shame cause I love a massage, and a massage with purpose would be a huge treat, sadly I already have my Xmas pressie with a pair of trail shoes Grin

actiongirl1978 · 27/11/2014 18:28

What were you making that 25 out of? A long run then two tempos or a different combination?

Suzannewithaplan · 27/11/2014 18:53

I've seen various physio's in the past, when I was focusing purely on strength training also had pilates one to one sessions for a while, apart from when I had acute problems I'm not sure if it really helped all that much.Confused

Seems to me that regular yoga is at least as beneficial in my case

There's a physio who has an office in the gym I use, I might give him a go, I'm a bit worried he'll tell me that I should give up either the running or the weights.
The 25 miles was generally 5 x 5 mile runs

Suzannewithaplan · 27/11/2014 19:02

I remember a physio doing regular painful stuff with my IT band, but I dont remember that it actually helped with anything.

It does feel sort of tender if I do any kind of 'rollering' to it but I dont think it gives me any gypConfused

With the strength training I'm careful to focus on the whole 'posterior chain' thing so as to avoid quad dominance.

Obviously it wouldnt hurt to get a professional opinion though...

MirandaWest · 28/11/2014 07:00

A short run from me yesterday (1.9m) but am working and commuting at the moment so not too bad. And glad I did it :)

875.3

Mitchy1nge · 28/11/2014 08:46

I ran for several years on the treadmill yesterday and stopped my watch at an impressive 1.4 miles (when countdown finished and I couldn't work out how to touch the screen and run at the same time)

I have bruises all over my legs from PT brutalising 'knots' out of them yesterday Hmm

876.7

(no pre race nerves yet, weird)

HalleLouja · 28/11/2014 09:00

3.1 to add too makes 879.8.

I have a race on Sunday and am tapering I love tapering. Am going to do HIIT today though.
