I'm doing Parkrun for the first time tomorrow and I'm really scared

That I will be the slowest runner there!
I have promised DP (who is a great runner) that I will go with him so no getting out of it now.
I haven't really ran for about 4 years, other than a couple of practice runs this week. Oh dear, what have I done?

The tail runner will be the slowest, don't worry! Have you looked online at the other people's times? There are loads of people that walk/run my local one. I wouldn't try to run too much if you haven't run properly for years. Maybe download one of the C25k podcasts and follow that.

Showmethesunshine · 20/06/2014 20:26

Great thanks will look online at times . Have not ran properly for years but cycle a lot and horse ride so am not totally unfit!

You won't be the slowest, there will be at least one tail runner behind you. These are good runners who volunteer to bring up the rear and check no one is left behind.

You will have a great time. I'm normally about 180 or 190 out of about 200. its fine, it really is. You will be running alongside people of your own approximate speed, and it is all about setting your own time and beating it.

our park run has walkers, pram pushers, dogs, children, and all sorts involved. I am regularly beaten by a man who walks the whole course at exactly 5 miles and hour, while I run! I'm also beaten every week by a six year old called Melanie, who always looks like I could over tke her, but I never do.

Honestly, it isn't about who is last, and it isn't much about who is first either, although it matters quite a lot to the first 10-20 who get very competitive. For the rest of us it is just about getting round, and feeling as if you have achieved something. It doesn't matter if you stop and rest, or walk or anything. The only thing that matters is can you shave a few seconds of your personal best next time!

Enjoy.

Thanks - am feeling much better about it now!

I am also doing my first parkrun tomorrow, but I wont be running. It will be more like a powerwalking light jogging combo. I am quite unfit, but need to get 5 k under my belt, in order to get a very special party invitation! Grin

Luggagecarousel · 20/06/2014 21:55

Good luck Quin and showme!

I'll be doing my 21st park run tomorrow, but taking it easy as I have been unwell this week. No PB this time!

Luggagecarousel · 20/06/2014 21:56

let's come back here tomorrow and share times! I bet I'll be last,

Meglet · 20/06/2014 22:01

You won't be the slowest believe me. I took 5yo DD a couple of times and we dragged in last at 55 mins after she mucked about all the way round.

Yay! More parkrunners!
I've had two weeks off so I almost feel like I'm starting again.
Get yourselves over to the parkrun thread too.
Whether in RL or online, the parkrun community is a v friendly one Smile
Good luck and have fun

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 20/06/2014 22:07

Thursday best me to it, but come and tell us how you got on on the parkrun thread.

I am volunteering tomorrow Smile

Tailrunning is my favourite volunteer role because I always meet nice new people Smile

MelanieCheeks · 20/06/2014 22:09

Yes indeed, have a great time, come back and tell us all about it!

Showmethesunshine · 20/06/2014 22:10

Will report back tomorrow with my time

I got a bit excited OhOne when I saw the word 'parkrun' in active convos on a Friday night!

BellsaRinging · 20/06/2014 22:14

Come on! You'll both have a great time and definately won't be the slowest (that's not what it's about anyway...you finish, you win!).

Showmethesunshine · 20/06/2014 22:17

Am aiming for 30 mins, but that might be optimistic Grin

redandyellowbits · 20/06/2014 22:22

Good luck show I really want to do one too but I'm too scared as I am a very slow and quite rubbish runner.

I can't go tomorrow morning but might register for next weeks run - let us know how your run goes.

Showmethesunshine · 20/06/2014 22:24

Redandyellow will let you know how it goes, but do sign up it sounds like fun!

Well done lego Grin

standingonlego · 20/06/2014 22:29

too many Grin....result of too much WineBlush

eyestightshut · 20/06/2014 22:32

I've registered, but am slightly terrified at the prospect of doing it, as I've only ever run 3.5k. Not sure whether to keep plugging away at c25k or just go for the real thing!

QuintessentiallyQS · 20/06/2014 22:37

I can easily walk 11 km up hill, and down again. The prospect of powerwalking/jogging 5k is quite frankly terrifying.
