Welcome emsie! I hear you on the running kit shopping, I find it very hard to resist even though I probably now have as much running gear as I do normal clothes! Mind you I do wear it a lot..

Well done fish and eau and enjoy the post race glow this sunny afternoon! I can join you after doing my 10k, it was quite hot and we nearly got charged by both cows and sheep at different points Grin but some absolutely fab marshals from my Club kept them away. It was lovely to catch up with everyone and for once my family came to watch me start and finish which was great. Not sure about time yet, maybe 57 mins? Forgot to switch Garmin off at the end and also the course was a bit long so will wait and see.

Now looking forward to chocolate later, gave it up for Lent and didn't have any yesterday so am quite excited!

Hello, Determined

In answer to your questions-

  1. No to both. I felt like a total knob but I live in a rural area and there's a road that only runners and dog walkers use so nobody really saw me. Go early before anyone is up! My aim was just to be able to run 5k but eventually I built up the confidence to do a half marathon.

  2. I still don't feel like a proper runner despite having done a half marathon. I'll let you know when I do! I think there's this image of the 'proper runner' where they are all toned limbs, lycra and sub-3hr marathons. But anyone can run, you don't need to be fast or skinny or have thousands of £s worth of trainers and heart rate monitors. All you have to do is run.

roquefortlover · 21/04/2014 14:26

Oops cross post determinedmama! No, I was not confident at all when I began and didn't tell any friends about it for a while. But, after a few weeks of C25K, I did start to trust in the programme and feel much better about it and about being seen out running. Second, I really do,think that if you go out and run at all then you really are a runner! Having said that I think I first felt like a proper runner myself when I ran for 20 mins without stopping when doing C25k.

You are doing brilliantly!

EauRouge · 21/04/2014 14:28

x posts, well done on your 10k roquefort (your name always makes me hungry). Sounds like you got a great time! I always forget to switch my Garmin off. I got a Creme Egg in my race goodie bag, don't think it lasted the walk back to the car Grin

IAmNotDarling · 21/04/2014 14:44

Hi, can I join in?

I'm on w6 of c25k and I'm starting to think I can do this. I only managed 15 mins without walking last night but I think it was because I was running on wet grass rather than my usual pavements.

At what point should I be thinking about getting fitted for trainers? I have a pair that are ok but probably will only last another month or two (.old and knackered, a bit like me!).

Fishandjam · 21/04/2014 15:48

Hello determined!

In answer to your questions:

(1) I'm still not confident, but to be honest I don't care much. I'm not what you'd call glam at the best of times, and I've never been sporty either, so looking (and being) slow, redfaced and sweaty doesn't bother me hugely. I started running for fitness rather than anything else, so taking part in Parkrun and now races is an unexpected bonus!

(2) I still don't feel like a runner Grin

Fishandjam · 21/04/2014 15:50

iamnot, do trainers now. I found it made a huge difference to my running comfort, as well as knocking an instant 2 minutes off my 5k PB time!

cinnamongreyhound · 21/04/2014 17:10

Hi emsiewill!

Well done EauRouge and Fishandjam!

Hi DeterminedMama! Qu 1) no way!! I was 15st and hadn't run since school, ran in the dark mostly!!! Qu 2) I did c25k and week 5 has a 20 min run at the end which made me feel more like a runner.

Great time roquefortlover! And the chocolate will taste amazing I bet!

Hi IAmNotDarling! I got mine once I was sure I would stick at running. I had my gait analysed and managed to get a pair in the sale for £60 but my last pair were £90 so can be quite pricey.

PolkaSpottyDotty · 21/04/2014 17:27

Hello everyone :)

Lovely to see lots of new runners!

After my grumpy strop about my stupid knees, I have good news! I've done 5k today, briefly walked twice and finished in 35 minutes Shock

I ran past my DDs old dance school and I would never have dreamt of walking there, let alone run!

So I'm going to bin Couch to 5K (only been doing it three weeks anyway and the plan just doesn't suit me now) and aim to run the entire 5K without stopping. Once I can do that I'll aim to improve my time ready for Race for Life in June. Then it's moving on to 10K, which I'm beginning to look forward to :)

Off to enjoy my post run high.

roquefortlover · 21/04/2014 18:02

Wow well done polka ! It's been a great day of running hasn't it. Have some Cake everyone x

Fishandjam · 21/04/2014 18:49

Well done polka, good time!

Mitchy1nge · 21/04/2014 18:52

well done everyone

haven't felt like running Shock but extremely old horse achieved speeds of over 20mph in canter which might be a PB for him!

unless that was a slowish gallop Hmm

Sirzy · 21/04/2014 18:56

Demented in answer to your questions

  1. I have been running since Semptember and I am confident that I look like a tit running, and confident I am rubbish at it but I am out running so that will do me!

  2. I have felt like a runner since pretty early on, but perhaps thats because I have come from a position where this time last year I was seriously lazy so it was a big improvement for me!

OP posts:
Mitchy1nge · 21/04/2014 19:05

oh the q's

  1. I used to run quite a while ago (think was last in 2006? ish) 5ks and 10ks but wasn't desperately confident as never particularly fast, but I don't know why I hadn't thought of extending my distance. I also never ran alone (still have some issues with this) so if my friend didn't go I wouldn't, and when the friendship fizzled out so did that era of my running career!
  1. I think I started feeling like 'a runner' once I realised I could go out and run for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles (was stressed and upset and it was a sort of self soothing thing) and that I might as well start structuring it and doing it like a normal running person
OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 21/04/2014 19:06

Hello runners

Well done to Eau, fish and roquefort for racing today.

Special welcome to new runners.

I have found the secret of how to run fast. Simply have a silly argument with your DH/DP/loved one before going out, and your ire will knock a minute a mile off your usual time though I did have to walk quite a bit because I set off too fast. 4.9 miles in total.

I can also confirm that Graffham Water is 9.03 miles around - we cycled this afternoon and I remembered to wear my garmin Smile.

emsiewill · 21/04/2014 19:10

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

In answer to determined:

  1. I had no confidence when I started, but now I know I can do it. The only way I got to this point was by carrying on!

  2. I feel like a runner when I'm running on my own. How I will feel when I am with "real" runners in a "real" race, I don't know. Probably a massive fraud. In fact one of the most embarrassing moments I've had recently was when I was running one of my regular routes one Sunday morning & inadvertently ran part of the Newport 1/2 marathon...the embarrassing bit was that I reached the 3 mile point before the people in the race & one of the spectators looked at me incredulously and said "are you the leader?!?"

I then had to run over a footbridge towards the starting mile of the course while all the spectators were coming in the opposite direction, having cheered on their friends / family. To them I must have looked lost...

I did run quite a lot faster than normal that day, though!

Sirzy · 21/04/2014 19:13

all my running bar the one park run I have done has been on my own! Keep trying to arrange to go running with friends but it never happen. Running in a crowd is actually my biggest worry about this 10k

OP posts:
CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 21/04/2014 19:24

Hi runners. Well done to all those who raced today and hello to all the newbies.
No running for me today, a twelve hour shift at work instead. Perhaps I should start wearing a pedometer to work!

In answer to the questions:

  1. I feel more confident now than I did 6 months ago. Back then I was only running sporadically, now I am running more I am enjoying it more and feeling more confident. I think the more you do it the better you get at it and the better you feel. I still worry that I look a bit of a sweaty, breathless, red faced twat but I care less about that now than I did before.
  1. I started to feel more like a runner and less like a fraud when I could run for 15 mins or so without stopping.
cinnamongreyhound · 21/04/2014 20:12

I went for a doggy run this evening, we did 4.8 miles and I really struggled to breathe :( woke up with a cold this morning but felt ok just heady. Feel much better for going but didn't think I'd make it while we were out!

Tiredemma · 21/04/2014 20:37

anyone (else) Confused planning on applying for London Marathon place in the ballot tomorrow?

EauRouge · 21/04/2014 20:45

Yep, although I must be mad. Does it open at midnight?

Sirzy · 21/04/2014 20:45

I am going to apply. Realistically I won't get in but worth trying!

OP posts:
Tiredemma · 21/04/2014 20:54
