February Shred Thread 2014

Starting the next thread for all those doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred - Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3.
For those having problems with their knees on the higher impact activities here are some suggestions from TalkinPeace:

^The secret is to build up the teeny muscles that support the side of the patella:

LOTS of balancing and yoga

  • stand with feet 6 inches apart, knees slightly bent, lift one foot off the floor, close eyes and see how long you can hold, repeat to other side.
  • stand with feet 6 inches apart, up onto tiptoes with legs straight, close eyes for as long as you can
  • stand on one foot, move the other foot to the front, side, back, side, in smooth semicircles about two inches off the floor - five each way each side before resting.

Alternative to skipping : march on the spot, bringing your knees up as high as you can.
Alternative to running : walk at jogging pace, pumping arms up to ceiling
Alternative to jumping jacks : half jacks, pump arms alternate sides and ceiling.^

Now done L1 D4. Thank goodness it feels a bit easier now than Day1!

I hope to do D5 on Weds then D6 next Saturday. Just constrained by circumstances. This is still 100% more exercise than I was doing before so its a big triumph for me.

2tiredtocare · 23/02/2014 19:09

I've been thinking that too Pinkflamingo it looks painful all that jigging about! I do pilates as well so I employ the imprint position (entire back pressed into the floor) to do the leg lift and lower

pinkflaming0 · 23/02/2014 21:59

I have done pilates in the past and do the leg lift/lower in the imprint position but find I can't maintain it when lowering my legs all the way down so stop when I can't keep my back pressed to the floor any longer. I hope with practice that I'll be able to though.

I tell myself that it's partly because I have long legs Smile

2tiredtocare · 23/02/2014 22:32

It might be that, I wouldn't know as I'm a short arse!

spinningirl10 · 24/02/2014 08:11

Morning allGrin

Ri30 D6 L1 done!

Think I'll move on to L2 tomorrow!

EvaTheOptimist · 24/02/2014 09:52

After 4 sessions of shred I think my waist is getting bigger!

I'm mainly doing shred to tone up - especially arms and legs.

And stomach. My stomach muscles are wrecked after 2 kids - I had a large central separation of muscles which has never completely gone back. Some yoga classes have been helping and I could feel "deep" muscles returning a bit. After shred my stomach feels sticky-out and my waist thicker. So I'm worried I'm rebuilding my stomach muscles wrongly, getting a "dome" etc. What to do!? Maybe I should substitute some yoga for the abs sections of shred?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2014 10:27

So, back after a week off - Ri30 L1D1 done.

Flamingo, I can't keep my back flat all the way on a leg lower and I'm only 5'1" - I don't know how/if anyone does. Anyway, I'm using a foam wedge now on those sort of moves. I didn't have it ready for the 'hollow man' in Ri30 and really couldn't do that properly. Did some extra leg raise/lowers with the wedge afterwards.

2tiredtocare · 24/02/2014 15:41

L2 D7 done, think I might mix things up and intersperse different JM dvd's on different days, i'm finding doing the same thing monotonous and a bit off putting

StuntNun · 24/02/2014 21:30

I just gave L1D1 a go and was pleasantly surprised I managed to keep up apart from on the sodding press ups which I've never been able to do. Is it all going to hurt tomorrow?

tanukiton · 24/02/2014 21:48

spinningirl10 good going!

Waves to ErrolTheDragon
Rip 30L1 D3 I have pulled a muscle(gardening) in my back so am going slow. I am fine on all the moves except side planks on that side.

spinningirl10 · 25/02/2014 07:48

Ri30 D7 L2 done!!

I think L2 is quite a jump up from L1!!!

Side lunges and crab push-ups!!!!!!!

Hope it improves and I just found it hard because I slept badly!

NoPainNoGainNoFunNoPoint · 25/02/2014 09:51

Hi! L1D3. Note to self: don't leave it nearly a week between shreds. Ouch! This one had me nearly crying more than the first one! It probably didn't help that I was sore from clipping a tricky hedge in the garden yesterday.

Also, 2yo's are not good for shredding. I need to shred when she's at preschool or asleep so she doesn't;

Nick my floor cushion
Move my bean can weights
Strew stuff around my limited exercise space
Try and change the YouTube shred I'm watching on my phone to Peppa Pig
Try to steer her pushchair into my exercise space / my head. Grin

Right, I need a shower!

Well done fellow shredders, keep it up!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2014 10:47

Ri30 L1D2 done. I quite like this one apart from the static chair squat.

StuntNun - hello! Typically people do ache for the first 3-4 days, esp the quads when going downstairs but then it really does ease off.

Tomorrow we're planning to go for a walk and/or birdwatching first thing (got to get DD to school for 8 to go on a trip and it's over halfway to where we want to go) so may or may not rip later.

2tiredtocare · 25/02/2014 14:06

Today I did L2 of KB & T's instead of shred, oh my dear god I should've started on L1 Grin my poor buns

NoPainNoGainNoFunNoPoint · 25/02/2014 15:06

5 hours since my shred and I think my arms are going to fall off just below the shoulder.

Hope you don't feel like your bum is going to fall of in a few hours 2tired. Grin

Lindt70Percent · 25/02/2014 15:07

L3D10 done ... at last. I started the whole shred thing on 9th January and I'm so relieved to have finished it as I was getting really bored. I never got to enjoy level 3 like I did levels 1 and 2.

I don't feel as 'shredded' as I'd hoped to. I could really see results halfway through level 2 and then just seemed to stay the same. Hope this doesn't put anyone off! I didn't take any photos though so it's hard to really tell. I have lost 6.5 cm off my waist which is great but that had happened by 29th January and hasn't changed since then.

One unexpected improvement was that, while doing superman moves, I got to see how disgusting it was underneath my bed and so had a good clear out and clean under there at the weekend so I could admire it today. Smile

Will start 6 week 6 pack tomorrow. I'm hoping they'll be more ab stuff in this as I don't think my abs are working at all, they never ached during any of the shredding. Anyone going to join me with that or are you all moving onto RI30?

2tiredtocare · 25/02/2014 15:27

I've ordered six week six pack so will join you when it arrives Lindt
It better not fall off NoPain what will I sit on?! Grin

NoPainNoGainNoFunNoPoint · 25/02/2014 19:01

Well I've got arse enough for three so you can borrow mine if you like? Grin

oohdaddypig · 25/02/2014 21:15

L2 D1 of 30ds. Really enjoyed it - still crap at strength stuff but needed harder cardio and boy did level 2 give me that.

Eva - I have slightly separated muscles too (in the middle I think nearly 2 inches). I am hoping I'm strong enough in the core that 30DS doesn't make it worse. My understanding is, though, that as long as your stomach is not bulging as you do crunches you aren't worsening it. If you are then I think I would do more plank type ab stuff.

I am really enjoying JM but it's hard going on my knees. I have a feeling it's all the jumping. If the pain keeps up I might mix it up a bit with other DVDs.

Lindt - love your name. It's my chocolate addiction which has given me 2 inches to lose off my gut. Out of interest, what made you choose the six pack DVD next?

StuntNun · 25/02/2014 21:38

L1D2 done Grin I'm off to a shower and to admire my no-doubt drastically improved abs in the mirror Wink

Lindt70Percent · 25/02/2014 22:37

2tiredtocare - that's great! This thread has really helped me get through the shred so it will be nice to have someone to 6 pack with.

Oohdaddypig - thanks. I'm addicted to 70%. I tried some 90% this week in an effort to cut down and urgh it was horrible! Did mean I cut down my chocolate intake though. I've got an online shop coming tomorrow which has 2 bars of 70% in it which I'm now regretting ordering in a moment of weakness.

I'm doing the 6 pack DVD next because I bought it about 3 years ago and only did it twice. Blush I'd really like to do RI30 but can't justify the expense at the moment so I'm going to work on my 6 pack in the meantime.

tanukiton · 25/02/2014 22:41

Lindt70Percent well done lindt!
rip30 l1 d4 done.

StuntNun · 25/02/2014 22:42

Lindt level 1 of Ri30 is on YouTube. Also Hotel Chocolat 85% is amazing but vair expensive.

spinningirl10 · 26/02/2014 07:48

Morning Grin

Ri30 D8 L2 done!

I enjoyed it more this morning and got through it ok......must have been the lack of sleep that made me struggle so much yesterday!

Good to see so many of us still going! Can't believe it's nearly March!!

2tiredtocare · 26/02/2014 07:56

After KB&T yesterday I had a pilates reformer class and then circuit training, Tuesdays are hard! Might rest today Grin Great, I'll let you know when my DVD arrives and we'll get started on our six packs Lindt 3 DC later and mine needs a hell of a lot of work
