February Shred Thread 2014

Starting the next thread for all those doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred - Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3.
For those having problems with their knees on the higher impact activities here are some suggestions from TalkinPeace:

^The secret is to build up the teeny muscles that support the side of the patella:

LOTS of balancing and yoga

  • stand with feet 6 inches apart, knees slightly bent, lift one foot off the floor, close eyes and see how long you can hold, repeat to other side.
  • stand with feet 6 inches apart, up onto tiptoes with legs straight, close eyes for as long as you can
  • stand on one foot, move the other foot to the front, side, back, side, in smooth semicircles about two inches off the floor - five each way each side before resting.

Alternative to skipping : march on the spot, bringing your knees up as high as you can.
Alternative to running : walk at jogging pace, pumping arms up to ceiling
Alternative to jumping jacks : half jacks, pump arms alternate sides and ceiling.^

L3D7 of Ri30 done!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 09:29

L3D9 done.

monkeytennismum · 13/02/2014 09:52

L1D9 done.

tanu you've made me very worried about L2!

Nightwish · 13/02/2014 11:23

Ri30 L1D2 done.
Will are you doing 7 days of each?

Lindt70Percent · 13/02/2014 13:09

L3D5 done today.

Don't know why but I'm feeling miserable about it all again. I know I'm a lot fitter than at the start and I know I've lost inches and a few pounds but there's no sign of the 6 pack that Jillian says I should be starting to see about now. Smile

I saw massive changes in myself in the first 15 days but since then I don't feel that I've progressed much at all.

I think I'm expecting too much really. I've been logging everything I eat in My Fitness Pal and I've not been doing too badly. I've been eating too much chocolate but have really cut back on the wine.

I think I'm just getting a bit bored and ready to move on to something else. Only another 5 sessions to go!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 13:31

Lindt - I can't see any 6-pack either but I can feel muscles that I didn't used to have. Bet you can too.

Stick with it for the last 5 days then try something else. Smile

Have you tried the 85% or 90%? - less sugar and more intense chocolate so a smaller amount hits the spot.

Logg1e · 13/02/2014 17:53

L3D3 done after a day's rest (normally only take Friday off). I managed to do some exercises a lot better than ever before, so perhaps rest days are the way forward?

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 17:59

You certainly need to have some rest days - and if you feel 'stale' that may be a good time to take one. Either a total rest or do something different.

2tiredtocare · 13/02/2014 19:04

Have you got DC Lindt? It must be harder for those of use whose abdomens have been through the trauma of pregnancy to get a six pack. I'm still laid up with the flu ad won't be shredding until I'm back to health

TessTackle · 13/02/2014 20:12

L1 D9 done. Pushed myself and did it all at Natalie's level except the push ups. Have sweaty red face to prove it!

Lily they're too big all round so even rolling them doesn't help Grin short legs & clumsiness don't mix well!

tanukiton · 13/02/2014 22:06

monkeytennismum don't be! I just didn't like l2. I liked l3. I have/had no upper body strenght so l2 was really hard. Finished l3 and now l2 is doable for me so there is hope!!

LakeFlyPie · 13/02/2014 22:15

Checking in on an impromptu day off, just too much of a rush after school / work today baking cakes, making Valentine cards etc; I agree sometimes you just feel ready for a day off and feel the benefit when you get back on it the next day.
Will have to do a Valentine Shred tomorrow!

Am impressed that you're facing the enemy that is L2 Tanukiton

Every level offers something 'challenging' MonkeyTennis, you'll be fine Smile

tanukiton · 13/02/2014 22:21

lint no visible six pack here either but I can feel it under the fat :). The problem with wanting a visible six pack is there is a layer of fat over it we all need to slim down and remove this fat layer first. There is also hidden fat around organs that needs to go too.
For me the last fat to leave my body is the fat on the belly so whether or not I will ever see the six packs I don't know.
BUT I have lost 6 kgs and have another 1 that comes and goes. I WISH I had taken measurements as now zip up my size 10 clothes. My weight didn't really change at first. It kept the same then it just seems to drop off some where at the end of l2. I guess my body was busy burning fat and building muscle. Even when my weight didn't change I was shrinking in girth!

FlockOfTwats · 14/02/2014 01:32

Day 8 of level 2 done. Really suffering with the knees, is level three any better on the knees?

TessTackle · 14/02/2014 10:24

L1 D10 done. Not quite feeling ready to level up so I'm going to stick to L1 for a little while longer.

Lindt70Percent · 14/02/2014 13:07

Hi,

ErrolTheDragon, I walked past some Lindt 90% in Sainsbury's the other day and thought of you. I've still got two bars of 70% in the fridge but will move onto 90% after they've gone. I'm so irritated with myself for still eating it but I'm fairly miserable with lack of work at the moment that it's sort of keeping me going.

Yes, I can feel the muscles underneath the wobbly layer so I do know it's working, I just want to get rid of the blinking fat! Step away from the chocolate.

2tiredtocare, yes I've got two children. They both weighed under 6lb when they were born so I think my body got off pretty lightly, but yes when I relax my tummy it takes on the pregnancy shape so it has definitely been affected. Poor you, still feeling ill. Proper flu takes a long time to get over so be careful not to push yourself too soon.

tanukiton, that's amazing! I weighed 62.2kg at the start, then it went down to 59.9kg and now back to 60.9kg although I'm not sure if my scales are dodgy. I lost 7cm off my waist in the first couple of weeks but then have stayed the same (and I know my tape measure's not dodgy!).

I think I'm just being impatient and feeling a bit down because of work and so projecting that misery into everything!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 14:20

L3D10 done! Plus some extra inclined press-ups at various elevations and different hand positions - I'm trying to focus on my weedy triceps by doing them with hands closer together, keeping elbows in.

So, now for half term week off - I intend to start Ri30 after that, might possibly try out the other two dvds that came with it (killer buns&thighs, extreme shred&shed) depending on what else we end up doing. Which will probably depend on the weather.

Lindt - good chocolate is a much better treat than lots of other things, just so long as you don't eat too much at once.

LilyJoAndMe · 14/02/2014 14:56

Happy Valentine's to everyone and well done on all the different successes. Smile

L3 D8 here - done !
Phew - I think I'm going to start again and go for Nathalie stuff. Ooooh scared!

Lindt70Percent · 14/02/2014 15:36

L3D6 just done and I feel better for it. Only 4 to go now.

Well done on finishing Errol. Enjoy your week off. I think I'll do my last 4 spread out over half term and will be starting something new once they go back.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/02/2014 16:19

Nearly there, Lindt!

monkeytennismum · 14/02/2014 18:17

Hello ladies, just to say that I have had fun on here but I am bowing out. I think the Shred has worsened my pelvic floor issues (so much so I am booking in to see my doctor). Much as I have 'enjoyed' the exercise, I really don't want to make this any worse.

Good luck to all of you with your JM regimes! Smile

LakeFlyPie · 14/02/2014 20:13

L3 D9 done, nearly there!

Well done on your 30 day completion Errol

Sorry to hear your PF is worse MonkeyTennis. I stopped my 1st Shred attempt after a few weeks of L1 for similar reasons, I'm lucky never to have leaked but I felt like my insides were going to fall out Shock
It spurred me on to start doing some daily PF exercises (using a free app on my phone) and after 6 months of 2 min ex most days I've managed to keep up Shredding.
Good luck with GP appointment.

FlockOfTwats · 15/02/2014 02:04

I am a good shredder today but a bad mother!

As my knees are really hurting, but i didnt want to skip days, I decided to try level 3. Found it very hard but much better than level two on the knees.

My daughter was watching and joining in and i totally forgot and shouted 'shut the fuck up jillian im dying'.

My daughter promptly told me 'Don't speak to that lady like that mummy'

And then when i fell over doing travelling push ups she asked if i had died and told me to get back up and do the exercise if not.

Got through it in one piece and really enjoyed the ab exercises!

2tiredtocare · 15/02/2014 07:43

That made me laugh Flock. I'm still recovering from flu but havent eaten nuch all week sue to swollen tonsils so need to build up some strength. Before I fell ill I had done L2 Day2 but was thiking maybe I should start back on L1? What do you all think?

Mumtoh · 15/02/2014 09:48

Hi everyone, not checked in for a few days. Last shred was weds when I did L3 for 1st time and discovered the DVD sticks on the last circuit! So I did Davina fit in 15 core on Thursday. I think it's quite good but it doesn't give the variety and all over workout that shredding does, for the same time commitment. Too busy yesterday to do any due to fighting off valentine admirers lengthy hair appointment and watching sports game. Back on it later, need to order myself a new DVD.

2tired I would prob go back and do 2/3 days of L1 to ease yourself back in, try doing 1 day and see how you feel. When I came back after flu I def had to ease back into it.
