Garmin watch thingy for running

I may have posted about this before, ages ago, but does anyone have one of these for running? And if so would you recommend it? I have tried various apps but find them annoying and inaccurate. Also I think I'd find a watch easier to look at while running.

oooh that's what it looks like, I saw some chat about it on the bottom of the home page the other day

I don't need any more gadgets I don't

it is quite freeing to go for a 'naked' run though, I do it sometimes (but only because I was reading a book about running mindfully and it said it was good for you) it's not as if our bodies don't keep an accurate account of everything we do with them - but I really like logging my miles and watching my lifetime total grow

hope am not out of action for long, it will be miserable cheering everyone else on in the group and doing nothing myself :(

I'm going to wait for the gadget which can be worn as an ear studd and will measure all bodily functions.

It's bound to be available soon Wink

Are you out of action Mitchy, did I miss something?

(actually I feel slightly on the verge of getting a virus)

WoodBurnerBabe · 10/01/2014 05:02

I was looking at the Fitbit One the other day. Now I want a Vivofit! But I also, do not need more gadgets...

Mitchy1nge · 10/01/2014 10:19

hope you don't get a virus suzanne

took my aching miserable calf to physio yesterday and was Shock about being told not to run, maybe it will only be a week or so but I wasn't expecting it and was just getting back into the groove after the holidays/some viral thing grrrrrrr

have gradually strained the deeper calf muscle on my right leg, the soleus, but there is also some sort of issue with the pain free leg - during one of the calf flexibility tests (where you bend your knee to touch the wall, keeping your foot flat, and measure the distance from the wall) the injured leg was still much more flexible than the other one (they both did extremely well of course :) hooray for my short sturdy legs) anyway I think it was about 5cm or more, have become increasingly lop sided over the past couple of years, can only turn to the right when skiing, gradually slide sideways to the right when riding a horse, and the heel of my left foot never touches the ground when I'm running, even during spin it's a conscious effort to use my left leg

am not a freak though, it is normal to have one reluctant limb and one cooperative one apparently?

Lazysuzanne · 10/01/2014 11:01

Ah I see, it was a calf problem that stopped me running about a year ago. I didn't get a diagnosis so cant say exactly what it was.

I was running around 25 miles a week when it just started hurting one day such that running was impossible.

I carried on weight training as before including calf raises and walking was fine.

It doesn't hurt now but then I only run intervals.

I know from strength training that I have a dominant leg, try to even it up with some unilateral work.

Will you be able to cross train while your calf heals?

Mitchy1nge · 10/01/2014 11:14

I can't do anything that is very similar to running, so no spin or cycling (is probably closest activity?) or whatever, but dancing seems to be ok especially as am working on isolations that are completely new to me so it's a mental challenge too - it's that 'pushing off' thing, like in a calf raise, that hurts - will not be the end of the world if I just have to lie around with my hot gel thing for ages, a few gentle stretches, some yoga, some attempts at dancing etc

physio did say that the more complete the rest the better the chance of a full recovery, and seemed confident it wouldn't take long

it just made me laugh to get an email from the clinic last night saying 'don't forget not to run' Grin

Mitchy1nge · 10/01/2014 11:16

it's a good opportunity to do some upper body strength things I suppose, just sit down and do some hammer curls or whatever

and eat pizza, was thrilled to discover am a whole kg lighter than on my scales at home Grin

Mitchy1nge · 10/01/2014 11:18

I swear I saw about 30000 runners last night though. What the fuck. People who don't usually run, all out there en masse just to fucking taunt me!

WhomessweetWhomes · 10/01/2014 14:25

Oh I often run without tracking anything. In fact I only really use a device when I'm training for a race and particularly trying to up my distance or pace. Now that I've got the Garmin though, I think I'll use it for all my runs, even if I don't always really keep an eye on it. It will be nice to see all the runs stack up on connect.
I'm low-carbing atm and starting lc bootcamp next week. Hoping the first week carb withdrawal won't put too much of a dent in my energy levels for running!

Just joined the Garmin group - as NoseyNoo. Used my Garmin 220 for the first time. I found it really motivating. I'm not sure that it made me quicker - still plodding along, but it did keep me focussed.

Mitchy1nge · 11/01/2014 21:49

welcome aboard noseynoo :)

yankeecandlebabypowder · 11/01/2014 22:22

anyone else having problems with the garmin website? I log on, recognises my watch but I can't uploads?

Mitchy1nge · 11/01/2014 22:24

I sometimes have to disconnect then reconnect my watch, or log out and back in again before it will upload (and then it sometimes takes AGES)

think a shiny new garmin site is coming soon, hope it is more stable

Lazysuzanne · 11/01/2014 23:03

I find the website plays up sometimes, worse is the silly prongy thing which connects my garmin to my pc it takes several attempt and fiddling about repositioning the damn thing to get my pc to recognise it!
