Garmin watch thingy for running

I may have posted about this before, ages ago, but does anyone have one of these for running? And if so would you recommend it? I have tried various apps but find them annoying and inaccurate. Also I think I'd find a watch easier to look at while running.

ohh! does garmin connect double as a hook up site:o

WoodBurnerBabe · 07/01/2014 21:45

I find standing on the spot and rotating 90deg every 20 seconds or so helps it to find the satellites. They can be slow sometimes though... My phone does do GPS but the Garmin is more accurate.

Mitchy1nge · 07/01/2014 22:16

mmm, he is a physio and does ultras (100k)

I googled him a bit more widely and he is not actually that hot, but am collecting ultramarathoners in mediterranean countries so hooray for me

my phone is much worse than the garmin, and when I first started running round our fields it didn't have a signal and I couldn't keep records of how far and how slow etc

Lazysuzanne · 07/01/2014 22:49

hmm, ultramarathoner, I'm thinking low testosterone and not quite the Italian stallion?
then again a physio could be very useful so def worth keeping in your collection Wink

Anjelika · 07/01/2014 22:52

Woodburner I will try twirling round with my Garmin to see if that helps. I only got it at Xmas and haven't had much chance to play with it. I've been sticking it in the window to find current location but I remember now that when I just wore it round the house and then tried I had a quicker result. Also interesting that it struggles to find a signal if not much charge left. Will look at the MN connection group if I ever get onto the Garmin website.

Mitchy1nge · 07/01/2014 22:56

is that true about ultra runners? my running guru does stupidly long ultras but he doesn't seem to have any problems in that department Hmm

I like them because they can be relied upon to think nothing of accompanying someone on a 3 hour + run and just chat and eat sandwiches on the way Grin

I think I might contemplate a 50k if I survive the marathons this year

Lazysuzanne · 07/01/2014 23:19

I'm probably just repeating cliches and stereotypes so ignore meBlush

no seriously I've heard that extreme endurance stuff can suppress testosterone in men?

maybe your running guru does it to calm him down a bit Wink

Lazysuzanne · 07/01/2014 23:24

50K!!
bloody hell Shock
how can a human being run that far, my sciatica starts to play up if I run for more than about 5 minutes at a time :(

I want my Garmin NOW (stamps feet-damn crochet goodies tempting me to buy them & not put money toward garmin!) I'm with you Mitchy1nge -if I get through the marathons in one piece I'm going for an ultra!

Mitchy1nge · 07/01/2014 23:51

ok, it's only a bit beyond 26.2 (although sometimes get quite anxious about the marathon distance, probably from a brief period of indiscriminately running for hours last summer, my body thinks I am trying to kill it Confused) but all being well should run more than half of 50k on Saturday

it is exciting to daydream about how far I might be able to run, am a big fan of Mimi Anderson (my guru is friends with and has run with her on some of those mad races) she is just amazing, and inspiring by sort of running her way through and largely out of anorexia

it's also fascinating that women are such relative newcomers to distance running and yet the further you get beyond the marathon the better than men they are

Mitchy1nge · 07/01/2014 23:55

anyway lazysuzanne, you probably actually RUN for 5 minutes, I am really slow Blush almost the slowest person in the world

Lazysuzanne · 08/01/2014 00:10

My 5 minute speed is 5.4 to 5.8 ish mph
Aint exactly fast :(
Is being short an excuse?

Mimi is quite something, and yes very interesting that women start to equalize and then overtake men with the very long distance.

Same with swimming I believe, that's why I liked swimming, I could often keep up with athletic looking men twice my size :o

Mitchy1nge · 08/01/2014 00:50

I wish I could swim properly, a goal that has been on the list for years.

Had to look at trusty garmin reports for speed, tend to think and work in pace, last year my average speed was 5.9 this year so far my max speed is 5.7 - that include walks but is still quite shameful. It's sweet how proud I am of an activity that I am actually shit at! Grin

Hello, if love to join the group - I have a Garmin too - forerunner 310xt. I'm not a triathlete though. It just felt like the right one for me.

I love it - have become absolutely obsessed by my splits. I'd love it if someone pm'd me the group info.

Mitchy1nge · 08/01/2014 12:08

hi elvis, looks like you are there - have sent you a request as your activities aren't showing up yet

(did we ever work out how to make that happen?)

Anjelika · 08/01/2014 15:47

I have just joined as well! I can see 7 of us on there.

WhomessweetWhomes · 08/01/2014 19:38

Ok I'm going to get organised and join the group tomorrow!

My Garmin worked a treat this morning. Searched for location after I'd dropped the kids off and used the minute or two it took to find where I was to warm up a bit with a brisk walk. Felt much lighter too just running with a watch and iPod rather than my phone Smile

WhomessweetWhomes · 09/01/2014 13:33

I've joined! (I am Goldberry). The run I just did hasn't appeared though. Maybe because I didn't join the group until after I'd uploaded the run?

Mitchy1nge · 09/01/2014 13:50

yay I can see you but not your stuff yet. I'm not sure if we have to make connections between individual members, or if it's a matter of adjusting the privacy to make everything visible to your connections and groups?

garmin connect is a bit frustrating, it's always logging me out, but at least I have anonymised myself on there now

EauRouge · 09/01/2014 14:51

You have to change the privacy settings individually for your past runs. There's a little line of icons near the top, click on the padlock one and you've got your privacy settings.

WoodBurnerBabe · 09/01/2014 17:59

Going out for a run with my 210 tonight, I run with a friend and she laughs at me because I like knowing how far and fast I run. You know, she justs goes out and runs until she's tired and then stops. What's all that about then?!?

Lazysuzanne · 09/01/2014 21:34

speaking of garmin, has anyone seen this www.techradar.com/news/portable-devices/garmin-announces-v-vofit-its-first-fitness-band-1213339

Lazysuzanne · 09/01/2014 21:40

she justs goes out and runs until she's tired and then stops

oh I could never do that, how relaxed and carefree she must be, I have to know exact amounts, for my charts and graphs Blush
