Anyone else starting in the new year and want to join me on a thread?

(Unless there's a thread I've missed)

Marking my place. Fully intend to start this as soon as possible, was a keen runner before I had DS & major complications! So looking forward to getting started again

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 30/12/2013 01:04

I dont think I'll be able to run with music. I have an iPhone but can never get headphones to stay in. Admittedly I've never paid much for them

Tricorne most people seem to plan their runs for the same days each week, leaving two days between runs at the weekend to allow your muscles to recover before starting the next week. I think you just need to commit to a set of days/times and then go for it. Remember that each run will take up no more than 40 minutes of your time including doing a few stretches at the end.

As for the boobs, I find my Shock Absorber keeps my girls firmly in place. I had a Freya Active which I liked, but SA is better. Get properly fitted as it's an essential piece of kit.

TheWoman - you can get running headphones that fit around the back of your head. I like them, they can't fall out. You can get them quite cheaply - I paid less than £5 for mine & they are great.

Tricorn, I have similar issue with the other half working shifts, I do a 9-5 full time job and had to fit the half hour up to 90 minute training around that and there were times I wanted to give up.
I didn't run the same days every week but did do 3 runs leaving a day or two gap. It was tough though. I wanted to quit at times. Then remembered this average 3 hours a week was the only 'me' time I had and it was benefitting my health. That was enough to do be motivated to do what I could.

GertyD · 30/12/2013 08:24

Should mention that i have 23 month DS, so early morning runs were out on the weeks DP worked earlies and evening runs were out when he did lates.

Finlaggan · 30/12/2013 21:01

I'm in. Planning first run tomorrow.
I have a 15mo DS and it is time to shift the weight (actually I should've started long ago).

I have used a running plan in the past to get me up to 10k but I am so unfit and at least a stone and a half overweight so I need to get to 5k comfortably before thinking about anything else.

DH also works shifts so I'm not sure how it going to work out.

Actually quite looking forward to it :)

Finlaggan · 30/12/2013 21:03

I was planning on using the NHS training schedule, is this what everyone is using?

dementedma · 30/12/2013 21:08

I have done this every year for the past 6 years but usually start in March to get up to 5k in June. This year am starting on Friday! Will be 50 in two weeks and well overweight so figure it will take longer.I use the NHS one to start with then just use a stopwatch and my own music after about week 3. Its going to be tricky because of having to go out in the dark but am determined. I have done it before, I can do it again. I am very slow though. Last year's 5k was 40 minutes!

CadiM · 30/12/2013 21:31

I did my second run this evening (chickened out of going this morning in the wind and rain) and I really enjoyed it. I'm a bit surprised how my my upper legs are aching today: I thought I wouldn't suffer too much as I do a lot of hill walking, I was wrong...

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 30/12/2013 22:03

I've just ordered my trainers with my Christmas money. Need a new bra as I seem to have shrunk. Then I'm good to go

I wanted to start this last Easter but never got further than downloading it and getting trainers. I want to give it a go this time, like others my main problem is timing. I work 9 - 5 and I've got a toddler who gets up at silly o'clock then when I get home its tea, bath and bed. By the time DS is sorted I'm knackered but I need to make time. I also need to get a decent bra!

Finlaggan · 30/12/2013 23:18

Oh yes, decent bra! Any recommendations?

Finlaggan · 30/12/2013 23:19

And we'll done cadi

imnotweirdimlimitededition · 30/12/2013 23:38

I'm in- turned 40 this year want to keep fitness up. Doing 5:2 so weight steady but need exercise. Just need new trainers & I'm good to go

ishesingle · 31/12/2013 12:06

I did this about 2 years ago but haven't run for a whole 7 months according to my Nike+ app so I'm starting again at the weekend. Marking my place on this thread! Grin

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 31/12/2013 12:11

Finlaggan
I'm going for a shockabsorber run bra
I've only read good things about it

Can I join in too :) I used to run in my early twenties (a decade ago) but have got pretty unfit and about a stone and a half overweight since the birth of my twins 3 years ago. I am determined to get back on track and am hopefully getting married this year so would like to look my best. I've actually decided to start today in my healthy quest and am going to try and do the January dryathon too.

Can I ask a couple of stupid questions?

  1. Do you take water? I always get really thirsty, or should I just try and wait.

  2. I have an iPhone and have downloaded the NHS C25k, do you run with your iPhone to listen to the podcast? Do you hold it? Wear it in a belt? I'm certain I'd manage to drop it.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 31/12/2013 13:26

Do any of you wear glasses?

OP posts:
sweetassugarhardasnails · 31/12/2013 14:21

Planning to do my first run in the morning; run 1 minute, walk 2 minutes for about 2 miles. Already my head is making up excuses

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2013 14:28

I'm in. I got really into it last year but have been rubbish this year. Timing is the biggest problem - I leave the house at 7 and don't get in until 5.30 Monday - Friday. Sundays are good, but I struggle to run and do dinner in the week. How do others cope?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2013 14:28

I wear glasses. Why?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2013 14:28

Oh and I'm doing my first run in about twenty minutes, if I can get my bottom in gear.

sweetassugarhardasnails · 31/12/2013 14:32

Remus I plan to go out 2 evenings a week (Weds and Fri) at about 7:30pm after I've got in from uni, cooked dinner and put the children to bed and then a run sometime on a Sunday.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2013 14:34

When will you eat dinner?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2013 14:52

Right. Trainers are on & I'm off. If I'm not back later, you'll know I'm collapsed in a field, somewhere in the suburbs of Birmingham. :)
