Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

What could I do?

You could follow a video like 30DS or just do loads of squats, lunges, crunches etc. Depends on what suits you. I do a video because I need someone shouting and telling me what to do next but you could easily just write your own plan or follow one from the internet.

Can I join?
I went out this morning for the first time this year and am all fired up :)

Started running about 5 years ago when DS(3 at the time) broke his leg and I needed some head space. Have stopped and started a few times but have run a few 5k, a very crowded (and therefore annoying) 10k and two half marathons - Silverstone in 2012 and Great North Run in 2013 (tiredemma I was about a minute ahead of you :))
I'm also a solo early morning runner and haven't made it to the local club and there are no local park runs though Saturday mornings are a bit busy in our house even if there was one.
Not sure what I want to do this year but would like a series of races planned, including at least 1 or 2 halfs, to challenge myself.
Have entered Colour5k in Northampton in June (I spotted you Buddha) and have just entered the ballot for GNR again here as it was BRILLIANT :) Want a few more though.

I found this book great with very sensible, easy, 3 x a week programmes that have got me through two half marathons. However the one recommended on here sounds well worth a read.

My friend did one of those colour runs last year which looks great fun!

I saw the electric run which looks great but is the week before the manchester 10k so don't think I will be doing it this year

Oooo, that looks good Sirzy. Getting a bit pricy for this year but have bookmarked it for next year. There are some Glow in the Park runs that look good but only found out about my local one at last minute last year and was already busy.
Must admit that Where's Wally Run looks silly enough :)

They both look great. I think I need to hunt for something fun like that locally.

Hi everyone, this looks like a perfect running thread for me, I'd love to join. I started running last April, did a 10k in May and a half marathon in October - was such a buzz and I love it, keen to put in the hours this year! Have a half marathon coming up in April - in St. Andrews. Hoping to beat my time (2 hrs 11) though not sure I really could, it was one of those runs where everything just went as well as it could and I don't think I've anything more in me!!

It's a gorgeous morning here so I'm going to do laps of the park until it starts to rain. My aim is to do 5 laps, which is 10K, as long as the weather stays fine Grin

Managed to get out yesterday and did just over 3K. I'm a bit worried as I am having surgery on the 13th and will need to rest for three weeks. Half marathon is in March so not sure I'll be ready for it :(

6.4 miles done. It started off sunny and breezy, but 4.5 miles in it suddenly went dark and started pelting down so I had to run home in the wind and rain. My hands are still freezing.

I did 5 miles this morning, was trying to 6 but the coastal run I run along was being closed because of the high tides so thought best not to continue!
I'm struggling with what to eat at the moment as for me the whole point is to get fitter and Lise weight but running makes me so hungry. I think I need to research what to eat whilst also training for a hm. In theory the exercise itself should lead to weight loss - shouldn't it???

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 03/01/2014 17:58

Well done Ruby Smile.

When I was marathon training I was permanently hungry - I found lots of protein helped after a long run e.g. cheese, ham, milk shake, scrambled eggs.

I toned up, and got smaller but didn't ever weigh myself so not sure if I lost weight.

It's all creeping back on now...

I felt heroic achieving just over 4 miles with my dog in a hailstorm (it was lovely when we set out Hmm) no wonder I had in my head the whole way round.

Well I managed my new year parkrun (and if you look very closely in the paper, you can see a bit of my arm!!)
I should be park running tomorrow but it depends on the weather feel guilty dragging mini kimmi out in the rain
I'm contemplating joining a running club, but not sure how it would fit into my schedule (I tend to do work in the evenings and I'd need a babysitter)

Ruby, what to eat has been confusing me to. I have tried researching and think it is more protien I need!

Hello all!
Hope you don't mind me crashing?
I'm a casual runner, started as a resolution 2012, and now really getting back in the swing after preggo and baby.

No park runs near me (massive shame) and have not been brave enough to sign up for anything else so I didn't want to appear on the other threads.

No running for me today-I'm in the southwest Wink

am ever fascinated by what to eat, have currently set MFP to aim for 225g carbs a day, 42g fat and 56g protein

it rarely works out like that though

Report
Mitchy1nge · 03/01/2014 19:16

in fact, thanks to magical pie charts on MFP app I can see that most weeks it works out at 50% carbs, 30% fat and 20% protein - am sure the fat and protein should swap places there? Blush

Naebother · 03/01/2014 21:11

Did 7.6 k yesterday in the sunshine. So feeling more positive about running this 10k in 4 weeks time.

I'm using Mfp too. It's interesting to see the breakdown. I eat waaay too much sugar. Total addiction.

Hi Thursday!

I use MFP to, always over on the carbs no matter how hard I try to keep them down though. I still need to lose another 2.5 stone so really need to try to focus the diet side but get it right for running.

can you run properly on reduced carbs?

have been advised anything from 60-75% of daily cals should come from carbs (is for marathon training but also probably all running?)

pleeeease add me on mfp, it's the same name as here but with an i instead of 1
