Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Went out again today, managed just over 10k but reeeeeally slow.

Bells, the Eastern www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk/ is in October and is flat.

EauRougemasTree · 29/12/2013 14:20

Link fail. Great Eastern Run.

BellsaRinging · 29/12/2013 15:05

Thanks eau. Thatlooks just the thing, and not too far away either!

RubyLovesShopping · 29/12/2013 15:20

Bellsa I am also thinking of a half next year, where in the uk are you as I have a flattish one in mind (pm if you need re location) in Oct but that means training through the warmer months which I don't enjoy, there's another half I may do in May which would be better as majority if training in cooler months. What do you seasoned runners think best?

RubyLovesShopping · 29/12/2013 15:22

Ps I did 5k yesterday morn very slowly. I'm better at running slower at linger distances than doing 5k park runs, plus again none within 30 mins of here.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 29/12/2013 16:11

Ruby - I prefer training in the summer, just because there is so much more daylight. But spring events are good too, as the training keeps you going through the winter Smile

Sirzy · 29/12/2013 16:12

I have only had autumn and winter running so far, looking forward to lighter nights in order to be able to go for a run when DS is asleep will make fitting runs in much easier.

Hi Ruby. I am midlands based-near coventry/leicester.

Fishandjam · 29/12/2013 16:58

Can I join? Though all this talk of 10k and half marathons is a bit intimidating... I just aspire to doing 5k in less than 35 mins. I prefer off-road running but this time of year, round here at least, that just means a ton of wet clay stuck to each foot.

There was a Truly Crap Runners thread last summer but it died in August.

Sirzy · 29/12/2013 17:00

Truly crap runner would suit me to the ground!

Fishandjam, you should come and do Parkrun one weekend, that's mostly off-road and not too much clay. And you can get a rubbish bacon butty in the cafe afterwards.

ShouldEAUldAcquaintanceBeForgo · 29/12/2013 17:06

Dammit, my festive name change is missing a letter Angry

Fishandjam · 29/12/2013 18:38

Yes to Parkrun - gotta start somewhere! (Looking at the website, I think I now qualify as Veteran class Hmm Grin)

OT, I thought about festively being SmokedSalmonAndCranberrySauce but it was a bit long.

RubyLovesShopping · 29/12/2013 18:46

Those of you who have done half marathons before what kind of time did you do it in? Wondering what's a reasonable expectation to set for myself.

MrsSippie · 29/12/2013 18:55

ooooh, I'm supposed to be doing the Cambridge half marathon - and the Histon one in June Smile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 29/12/2013 19:00

Ruby - I have improved from about 2:45 to 2:20 for a HM. I can't imagine getting any faster, and don't particularly want to.

MrsSippie · 29/12/2013 19:01

And would second reading the Dawn Dias book - it had me laughing very loudly at times. Does anyone do the park runs in Milton? I have my barcodes but just haven't made it there yet..

Tiredemma · 29/12/2013 19:34

Ruby I did the great north run in 2.29.

Would love to shave about 15 mins off that, although to be honest, for me its not about the time, its about getting to the end in a reasonable state!

Fishandjam · 29/12/2013 20:28

mrssippie, I'd be starting with the Hinchingbrooke parkrun but I know Milton CP well. Though I get royally lost each time I run there Blush. When is their parkrun?

ShouldEAUldAcquaintanceBeForgo · 29/12/2013 20:30

You can't get lost at a Parkrun, you just follow everyone else. You're only in trouble if you're first and you don't know the way Grin

MrsSippie · 29/12/2013 20:36

Saturday mornings at 9am Shock

ShouldEAUldAcquaintanceBeForgo · 29/12/2013 20:56

That's why I don't get to parkrun very often. 9am saturday is fine for me but DH takes some persuading to get up that early.

ShrekTheHalls · 29/12/2013 23:15

found a couple of local parkruns which look nice. I know both venues well but would have to bank on getting back on time for dd's tennis lesson at 10... we're looking at 30-40mins max, are we?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 30/12/2013 00:00

Shrek - depends on the parkrun - my local one starts the briefing at 9:00, then there's a bit of a walk to the start so it can be 9:10 before we set off. Then 30 mins or so running time, a few minutes waiting for your bar code to be scanned and a quick chat before you get away - I'm usually home by about 10 (am 5-10 mins cycle away).

I went to another one recently where the briefing was at 8.45 to allow time to get to the start by 9:00. It was a lot smaller so there was less waiting time at the end, so although I ran slower because I didn't know the course, I was done sooner.

MrsSippie · 30/12/2013 09:02

I've been using the endomondo app the past few months but I downloaded c2 10K a while back and am going to give that one a go today. It looks quite tough..
