Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Mitchy - thats what I am struggling with, eating too many carb hinders my weight loss but not eating enough makes the running harder. If I am planning a big run I always try to make sure the meal before is quite carb heavy but otherwise I try to limit them a bit

5.25 miles done this morning whilst baby naps and before the weather turns!
Think there's some kind of horsey meet on in the village, I had to tuck into the hedge a trillion times to make way for the massive boxes.
So that equates to just over 8k in about 50 mins, can anyone tell me if that is a good time?

Parkrun? More like Tough Mudder without the 12 foot walls and electric shocks. Still, I wasn't last Grin

Thursday - I would be over the moon with that!

Thank you Sirzy! I wasn't disappointed, but I literally have no idea about what is a good pace etc etc. I run back roads with hills, horse boxes and other various obstacles Smile

Well done fish! How did you do? I hope the weather was kind to you?

Thursday, 8k in 50 mins is 6 mins 15 secs per km. Sounds more than respectable! I'd be made up if my pace was as fast as that.

Weather not kind - peed it down the whole time, and I and eaurouge got ridiculously muddy and damp. But it was rather fun!

Fishandjam · 04/01/2014 13:29

Oh, did it in just under 43 mins. Not bad given the conditions underfoot and my overall state of unfitness.

I think we did pretty well! You should have seen DH's face when I got home Grin As predicted, the first thing he mentioned was the car. Definitely bringing bin bags next week!

I am currently running at about 8.50 per km, can get it to 8.30 on a good day. Not to bothered about pace though as long as I can go the distance. Someone has to come last so it may aswell be me!

Arf at Eau's DH (I was expecting the same from my DH, but managed to sneak in without him seeing me). Well done fishandjam!

Thursday - sounds like a good pace to me, but I'm not fast Smile

Well done both of you! There's something quite fun about running in the mud for sure Grin

I agree Sirzy, I prefer distance to speed. 10 minute miles are about as fast as I can go.

Sirzy I'm the same. Slow but steady.

Did 4k this morning in the pissing rain and wind. Deliberately short to recover from my longer one on Thursday.

I'm doing 3 runs a week. 1 x 5 k. 1 x longer run building up to 9k by end of month. 1 x shorter recovery run of 4k.

Interesting to read about cutting carbs down impacting on energy levels.

I'm going to cut down sugar and up protein to see if it helps .

Can I join? Runner here after doing c25k spring 2012, got serious quite quickly, injured spring 2013 but back running again. Entering first half marathon in March too - Lydd in kent.

We are incredibly lucky to have a park run in my small village...but I never do it as I do a long run on Saturday mornings.

I am beginning to bore RL people with running chat so would love to bore you here instead!

Only thin is I measure all my runs in miles, not km.

Running tomorrow after work - a regular 10k with a friend.

Hello Elvis. Sounds like we're at a similar level, I'm also doing my first half in March.

Arsing arse :( I knew my trail shoes weren't a perfect fit but one of my toes is killing me this morning. I can still go on my long run today, right? Right? This is the wrong month to need new trail shoes, I am poor.

Enjoy your run Rudolph.

It is my 30th too, I am getting an ascics pair which my friend says are good - trying to research just confused me!

My trail shoes are Asics, they are very narrow so if you have wide feet then maybe look at another brand. I got a gait analysis done recently and I got a pair of Brooks for running on the road which are much comfier than the Asics ones. Wish I'd waited until my gait analysis before I bought the Asics Hmm

I have very narrow feet so hoping these help and are comfier Eau.

Fantastic rudolph. I quite fancy the idea of getting a bike but think I would probably kill myself on one!

Ive got Nike LunarGlide for pavement/roads and some AMAZING Adidas Kanadia for Trail/park runs.

think I might need some new road ones soon though- any one try Brooks?

Report
EauRouge · 05/01/2014 09:30

Yes, I've got Brooks Adrenaline GTS. They are brilliant, I have quite wide feet but they're just right.

I've heard good things about Kanadias, is it true that the sizes come up quite small though?
