Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

yesterday may have been good running weather, today wasn't!

It's horrible weather here. Hoping to get a leg stretch in later on.

ShouldEAUldAcquaintanceBeForgo · 30/12/2013 10:14

It's crap here too, I'm glad I went yesterday. Today I'm going to be resting and foam rollering.

Can I join in to!

I have my first half marathon in March. Training was going well until October when I came down with a virus, which meant I was unable to run (though I did do a 10k at the end of November). I am now feeling better but haven't yet started running again. Training needs to start immediately if I want to get to the finishing line.

DulcetMoans · 30/12/2013 10:20

Managed to convince DH to come running today but what has happened to the weather?! I doubt I can get him out in this. Don't fancy it much myself!

Sirzy · 30/12/2013 10:22

As soon as I stepped out the door it started raining and I felt like I was running into the wind the whole time. Wanted to go out before the weather got too bad but was obviously too late!

Hi merry, good luck!

If I actually got out of bed I may stand a chance of getting out Grin

emmief77 · 30/12/2013 11:04

Oooohhh can I join?? I have just started a new thread as my local running group is going to fold .... have just entered a 5 mile race in March to keep me motivated, and have also downloaded NHS 5K plus podcast (need help using this with mapmyrun)

Naebother · 31/12/2013 15:07

Can I join you?

I started running in June 2013. Did c25k and ran my first 5k in September. Ran my first ( and only so far) 10 k in November and have another at beginning February.

I'm toying with the idea of trying for a place in a half marathon next October. Is that doable?

At the moment I'm doing 5 k 3 x a week and park run once a month. Guess to aim for another 10k I'm going to have to get longer runs in at weekends in January.

DulcetMoans · 31/12/2013 15:46

Just been out for a little-ish one. Mapmyrun didn't register my first mile though as I managed to pause it as I put it away. Don't you hate that!? Feel like I've been done out of a mile now!

Sirzy · 31/12/2013 20:57

Oh no Dulcet, how frustrating. I get annoyed when runkeeper manages to jump and add a few km to the run, although at least that makes my times look better...

I am determined to go for a run tomorrow, start the year as I mean to go on

Hi, emmie and Nae.

Nae - I hope that is doable, I have never ran futher that 7k (and a lot of that was jogging/walking) and I have a half marathon in September

OP posts:
ShouldEAUldAcquaintanceBeForgo · 31/12/2013 21:03

It's absolutely doable, most of the beginner half marathon training plans I've seen are for people running 5k three times a week and are between 12-16 weeks long.

Sirzy · 01/01/2014 09:49

2.5km in 20 mins. Getting back into it now!

Trying to decide whether to do a 10k or a 5k in March. Think I will see how January goes and take it from there!

OP posts:
MrsSippie · 01/01/2014 09:53

I've hid that'plateau'.Can do about 3.8 K, sometimes 4 fairly easily (well in about 25 mins!) and then just sort of stop and can't be arsed to de anymore. It's like I'm comfortable and don't want to try any harder. Need to either speed it up, do further slower or do these horrible interval things :(

ShouldEAUldAcquaintanceBeForgo · 01/01/2014 10:15

The first couple of k of any run is horrible, even for some experienced runners; it doesn't mean that you can't run further. Try doing something like run 20 mins, walk 3 mins, run 20 mins- you might surprise yourself!

Do you do any cross training? I'm doing the 30 day shred two or three days a week and I've found it's massively improved my running.

Also sometimes simple things like changing your playlist or your route can make a big difference.

Sirzy · 01/01/2014 10:31

MrsSippie- would entering a 5k race give you something to work toward to give you that extra push.

Should, I want to get back to doing the 30 day shred, might start that in the morning.

MerryBuddha · 01/01/2014 11:42

I will go out for a run today, though it does look horrible out there and I have yet to leave my bed.

Sirzy · 01/01/2014 11:42

I am glad I went when I did horrible out there now

OP posts:
DulcetMoans · 01/01/2014 11:47

I'm not sure it's even possible to run where we are! It's horrible out there; so very windy and absolutely peeing it down!

Complete respect to anyone that has gone for it!

Sirzy · 01/01/2014 11:49

thats what it is like here now, can't believe how much the weather has changed in a few hours!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/01/2014 11:54

I went to parkrun this morning . Glad I was up and out early, it didn't rain until I was driving home but the course was cross country and a total mudbath as it was, would have been awful in the rain.

Sippie - is there a parkrun near you?

Eau - good idea about the shred - I should dig my DVD out for non-running days Smile

MrsSippie · 01/01/2014 13:44

I think I will start the parkrun - it's about 2 miles away and I got my barcodes about four months ago !! Of course, had it all planned for today - different route, different songs and.....rain, wind and cold. I may be hard but I'm not that hard. If it calms down I'll definitely go out later Grin

MrsSippie · 01/01/2014 13:45

Oh, as far as x training goes, I cycle about 20 miles a week to work and back. Used to swim a lot but don't go quite so often now.

ShouldEAUldAcquaintanceBeForgo · 01/01/2014 14:13

Do you do any strength training?
