Well done pennygallops and your DS on park run PBs. I got one too! 39m03s which is 24s faster than my first (and only other) park run, and is also nearly 3 minutes faster than I ran the course on Wednesday. Looking like my ankle is getting better! [busmile] (

5eggstremelychocaletymadeggs · 31/03/2013 10:09

Biwi i use couchto10k by zenlabs abd listen to music and use mapmyrun. I think there is a voice option on mapmyrun but if not you can look at it and see your pace.

Maybe do a search for speedometer apps?

pennygallops · 31/03/2013 10:16

Thanks nurseezzza. and congratulations on your new PB. Glad to hear your ankle is getting better.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2013 10:47

I would recommend runkeeper or endomondo BIWI, you just need to make sure you open them in the right order so they all work. What are you using for the C25k? Is it the podcast? If it is you won't be able to listen to music at the same time as that.

Well done NurseEzzzaChapel, glad to hear you're ankle is improving.

Currently I use Get Running for my C25K - which I can use in tandem with my music. I also have Nike + iPod on my phone, but I've never used that, and I downloaded MapMyRun yesterday.

I suppose I could try it - get the music started, open the Get Running app and then try the MapMyRun and see what happens!

5eggstremelychocaletymadeggs · 31/03/2013 15:29

I turn on mapmyrun and then minimiae ut and then put on couchto10k and it has a music option which i can play my music on.

Then if i want to look at distance etc. I just pull down the top if my screen and it shows mw which apps are in use with details ie it will tell me if i am on a jogging or walking section of couchto10k and the time into the app.

The maomyrun will show me distance done and time etc.

With mapmyrun you need your gps obviously but it works better with your wifi off.

What type of phone do you have biwi? Mine is a samsung galaxy s advance?

BIWI · 31/03/2013 16:02

I have an iphone 4

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2013 16:21

If you open the Nike + app it will start your music from chosen playlist. You can open endomondo before anything else but I seem to remember you need to open runkeeper last it then plays over your music telling you every km/mile/5 mins.

Thanks cinnamon - I'll try doing that.

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 31/03/2013 18:42

Has anyone found a podcast for C210K? I thought Robert Ullrey was doing one but I can't find it anywhere... Sad

5eggstremelychocaletymadeggs · 31/03/2013 18:50

I just use the zenlabs app but i thought on the nhs page where you get the couch25k podcasts there was a link that took you to a couchto10k one?

Shewhojuggles · 31/03/2013 18:57

Thanks Biwi and Sarah, I do have good trainers but I hadn't ha my gait analysed so it could be they aren't right for me. Where did you go for that, a running specialist shop? Happy Easter too btw!

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 31/03/2013 20:34

Thanks 5eggs, will go and have a look.

SWJ, I went to a specialist running shop - recommended by a friend of DH, but I would just google them. Good luck!

BIWI · 31/03/2013 21:01

I went to a running shop in Teddington called The Sweat Shop.

Debs75 · 31/03/2013 21:11

So have been doing couch to 5K for three weeks now and have managed 3 runs. I just can not run when it is so cold or windy. On a plus point I did manage to run every 1 minute run today without almost passing out. I think I will try and get out more this week before I attempt week 2 with it's longer runs.

Babybeesmama · 31/03/2013 21:25

I started today! I'm a complete heifer after having dc2 (who is now 6 months old)! Hoping I can keep it up Grin

EggInABap · 31/03/2013 23:08

Hi everyone

I started the C25k last Monday using the Zenlabs app. So doing week 2 run 1 tomorrow.

Might sound like a silly question but what do you all do with your phone when running? I find it awkward holding it in my hand with my earphones in but when I put in in my jacket pocket it kept falling out. Wondering if people strap them to their arms (or did I imagine seeing that?)

If this works for me it will be a miracle as I hate running and haven't exercised for almost 18 months since a badly sprained ankle. Just decided last week, no more excuses! Desperate to lose some weight and feel good without having to starve myself to do it.

Are any of you following diets whilst doing this? I've just been reading Paul Mckenna's book so hopefully tomorrow it will all have sunk in.

Happy running everyone Smile

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 31/03/2013 23:17

I have a light generic activewear jacket with zip pockets that I put mine in - it also has a little port for the headphones cable. But I have been looking at armbands for when (if!) it is warm enough not to need a jacket. You can get them from Amazon. Or the running shop I bought shoes from was selling sort of bumbag things you could put a phone/iPod in (?)

Happymum22 · 31/03/2013 23:26

I tried my week 2 run today, I really struggled and came home a bit worried about my shocking fitness!

I have stopped my gym membership as it got too expensive and the warmer weather (I hoped!!) was on its way!! I used to swim very regularly and do gym aerobics classes about once a week with the odd gym session in between. At the gym I can cycle for about 15-20 mins and run on a treadmill for 5 mins and then 2 mins fast walk etc. repeating for up to 25-30 mins. I usually do a 45 minute session combining the cycling and running.

I know my fitness isn't great but at the same time didn't think it was terrible and expected it to come back to me quickly. Week 1 wasn't easy but I coped with it and managed it each time. I really struggled with the runs of week 2 and to keep going. I live in quite a hilly area which doesn't help. I just get really short of breath very quickly. I don't know if it is that at gym classes I had no option to stop and was continually motivated by the instructor/others in the class.

Maybe it doesn't help I have a bit of a cold at the moment but I am almost recovered.

Any advice how to get through this?

BIWI · 31/03/2013 23:31

Egginabap - I have a waist belt that I use to keep my keys/phone in. It fits tightly round the waist so doesn't flap around when I'm running.

Happymum - the fitness will come back as you train more. But if you're finding it tough, then just repeat a week. Don't move on to the next week if it's too hard.

BIWI · 31/03/2013 23:33

JH1967 · 01/04/2013 08:50

Completed first week 1 run this morning, feeling good. Hope I can keep it up.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/04/2013 09:06

Welcome and well done to those who've just started!

I find even being a bit bunged up effects my ability to run as does not having drunk enough. I would also say everyone I know who's done both road running and treadmill running says being on the road is much harder.

I used to have an armband but it got too big as I got smaller. I have a pocket in the back of my leggings that my phone zips into (just have to make sure I tie them up or they fall down). Armband are cheap and effective, where ever you put it it will get sweaty in my experience.

I used mfp to track my calories but did cut down so had a few weeks very hungry. My body quickly got used to the reduction in calories and I am now eating what I think is a normal diet just less than I used to and I don't get ravenously hungry at all.

Welcome all you newbies.

I started running with the NHS C25K podcasts. I used my iphone, zipped it into the pocket on my running tights. However, I now don't run with music and rarely take my phone out with me. I use the pocket on a Saturday morning for my parkrun barcode. I track my running using a GPS watch.

egginabap I use mfp to roughly track my calorie intake but I eat pretty healthily.

BIWI · 01/04/2013 10:27

How lovely to think about the idea of running in the sun. I wonder how long we have to wait for that?! [bugrin]
