If you don't like exercise, why not?

I run or swim most days. Whenever I mention that have done this I nearly always get the same responses:-

Oh you are good.
God, I couldn't be bothered with that.
I hate exercise!

Seriously, it made me wonder why do people see it as such an evil difficult thing?

So just being nosy really.

I hate sweating.
Makes me panic, which then makes me sweat even more.

I do walk every day though.

molepom · 21/05/2012 16:40

Because I cant be arsed, too tired, have a mountain of other things that need doing which I equally can not be bothered to do, I dont have the time or energy and I'd rather sit on my arse on the sofa eating ice cream.

Simple really.

molepom · 21/05/2012 16:41

ie, I'm a lazy git.

NoVeggiesBeforeEggies · 21/05/2012 16:41

And I'm a crap swimmer Grin

Empusa · 21/05/2012 16:41

I find a lot of exercise really really boring

Off topic, but annoyingly I'd just found a couple of fun ways of getting exercise when I started having health problems and had to stop. I have a stupid body.

BunnyLebowski · 21/05/2012 16:42

Because it ruins my make-up.

And I'd rather sit on my sofa, drink wine and watch movies.

Swatchdog · 21/05/2012 16:42

I hated exercise after suffering the indignity of the hockey pitch/netball court/hurdles at school and being truly ridiculed for my lack of coordination and skill. It took until I was 30 odd to overcome that and get into some form of exercise, and now I go to the gym most days, lift weights, do classes, run etc.

I actually hated all of it when I started, but needed to do something about my expanding arse, and my lack of fitness nearly stopped me, but I saw results so persevered.

So in short, it was experiences at school, and then finding it hard when I was so unfit that made me hate it. Now, ironically, I love it if I find something I struggle in.

eurochick · 21/05/2012 16:42

Time pressure. When I had a few months off between jobs I went to the gym every day, in the middle of the day, when it was lovely quiet and loved it. Now I have the choice of going before or after a long day in the office, it is less appealling. I enjoy running at the weekends. Fitting in weekday workouts around work and all the other stuff I have to deal with Monday to Friday is a chore.

As a current exercise addict I have the energy to do everything. Not carrying a surplus four stone helps.

I used to be of the hate exercise camp. It was hard to see the attraction until I got into it.

I still like the result more than the action.

ViviPru · 21/05/2012 16:45

Running hurts (me)
Swimming is dull (to me)

BUT
to me...
Advanced step is all kinds of awesome
Mountain biking is exhilarating
Walking is relaxing and enjoyable
Zumba is fun (controversial - I know)

To say one hates all exercise is a bit silly. People need to just find the exercise that is enjoyable to them. In your example, I would hazard that many people aren't keen on the idea of running or swimming specifically (although I accept that many more people do enjoy these things)

SwedishEdith · 21/05/2012 16:45

It's very, very boring.

I would hate the whole palaver of swimming - getting changed in and out of damp costumes, changing rooms, being cold, having
to dry my hair so often.

Running is very bad for the joints.

The only exercise I can imagine is tolerable is stuff like dancing when it doesn't feel like exercise.

SimpleSi · 21/05/2012 16:45

Shorts, running shoes...

BlackAffronted · 21/05/2012 16:47

I love some exercise. Running though, is horrible. Why anyoen would want to do that for fun, I have no idea!

squoosh · 21/05/2012 16:47

Some people are naturally sporty and love to exercise, other look on exercise as something that they 'should' do.

Also a lot of it is to do with habit. If you do something for 21 days it creates a neural pathway in your brain. Exercise every day for three weeks and it becomes second nature. Similarly if you don't exercise for three weeks or more you lose the habit.

akaemmafrost · 21/05/2012 16:48

See I really like the action. Someone said you must feel great when it's finished? But I love doing it too, never happier than when I am out running.

I think the school thing and how PE is or was conducted for girls is interesting. I despised PE at school, the short games skirts (WTF was all that about?) the cold, the sadistic teachers and lack of control about what activity etc.

Loathe feeling out of breath and having aching legs. Hate the physical pain of exercise (gym, running). I like swimming but hate the faff of going, getting changed, lockers, showering etc. Maybe if I had a pool in my house I'd use it.

I love skiing, but unfortunately don't live on a mountain. I like long walks, but don't have much time to do it. I like rock climbing but again, no rocks near me and can't afford to do it recreationally. Cycling is fun when I'm in the mood, but not on a daily basis.

Wish I could find something I enjoyed and that would shift the stone I need to lose. But I'm lazy and always tired so would rather sit at home than move about.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/05/2012 16:50

I am just ver ver lazy (and fat)

HillyWallaby · 21/05/2012 16:50

I find it really dull, especially the gym and running. I have terrible balance and hand/eye co-ordination so I am crap at ball sports. I don't mind swimming but I can't be arsed to get changed, get my hair wet, get dry, sort my hair out and get dressed again, so that 30-45 minutes of exercise turns into two hours of faff. I hate sweating and being out of breath and going all puce in the face. It's just undignified. Grin

(I went through a phase of loving aerobics and step once, but it was a short-lived phase.)

BunnyLebowski · 21/05/2012 16:52

Another reason. Seeing a fellow gym user blow-drying their minge in the changing rooms. What has been seen cannot be unseen.

HamblesHandbag · 21/05/2012 16:54

my body just doesn't feel good doing exercise.

  1. I'm uncoordinated, weird ankles make walking feel odd and uncomfortable.
  2. Swimming is cold, dirty and faffy.
  3. dancing is out of the question (see 1)
  4. I tried couch to 5k and waited for the addiction to kick in...it really didn't.
  5. I'm far too much of a wuss to do mountain biking or anything like that Shock

I think my basic lack of coordination is at the root of all my disagreements with exercise.

And oh god, yes, PE at school was just a lesson in humiliation Sad

Mrsrobertduvall · 21/05/2012 16:55

I hated sport at school, as I was naturally thin and they all expected me to be good at athletics.
In the last 2 years I have discovered the gym and love it. i have a trainer once a week and evert time it's a new challenge. I do Pilates once a week too. I have lost weight , toned up and feel much better.
Loathe swimming and can't run.

Mrsrobertduvall · 21/05/2012 16:55

And I never shower at the gym...I come home.

Ryoko · 21/05/2012 16:56

I piss about indoors I also piss about in the playground.

I can't swim and would never run as I hate my size Ds bouncing around/being really held/pushed down by a bra.

I would love to do Martial Arts but don't have the cash.

HamblesHandbag · 21/05/2012 16:56

oh and I don't like outside. Inside rocks.
