If you don't like exercise, why not?

I run or swim most days. Whenever I mention that have done this I nearly always get the same responses:-

Oh you are good.
God, I couldn't be bothered with that.
I hate exercise!

Seriously, it made me wonder why do people see it as such an evil difficult thing?

So just being nosy really.

The only exercise I can do is Zumba and sex Grin because they're both fun.

I hate going to the gym it's so dull. I hate running because I feel like I can't do it (probably from school an PE, had a horrible teacher) which is probably why I hate doing other exercise too.

I will take dc swimming at least once a week though

Voidka · 21/05/2012 17:44

I get bored so easily.

I do swim twice a week, but I can only last 20 minutes before I have run out of things to think about.

BrainSurgeon · 21/05/2012 17:47

To answer your question OP, I'm afraid I do hate exercising (as in going to the gym to break a sweat)
I come from a family of sedentary people, no one did any sports let alone go to a gym. And I'm also very lazy and not competitive at all... so sports really don't appeal to me, nor does running I'm afraid.
I'm a lost cause :(

Born2BRiiiled · 21/05/2012 17:49

The sort of exercise I can do for free, which takes the least amount of time i.e running, bores me and wrecks my knees and motley. Everything else takes too long and costs. Doing the same thing all the time kills me.
I have enjoyed it in the past, when I had time and money to do a variety. I love exciting things like windsurfing or skiiing, but they cost and eat time.
It is mainly time though. Up at six and out the house by seven. At work or with kids til 7pm when H is in. Then more work. By the time I am free it is 9pm and I need half an hour of reading to keep me sane! So, when?

Astr0naut · 21/05/2012 17:50

I'm exactly the same, voidka. Watching the telly in the gym doesn't work either, because I run quite oddly, so end up having my ear plug yanked out of my ear.

amillionyears · 21/05/2012 17:54

I want akaemmafrost to come on here and solve everyones issues with sport.Shouldnt take her long! Wink

OrmIrian · 21/05/2012 17:55

I used to think I hated it too. I was crap at games at school. THen I realised that I was walking for miles and miles every week - to get to work and then for pleasure at the weekend.

I took up step, then body pump, then circuit training. The only thing I found boring was going to the gym. Now I run and I love it! Yes, there are times when I'd rather slob about doing nothing but I feel so much better for going, I get such a sense of satisfaction and exhiliration, and although yes, I get sweaty and tired and bits of me hurt sometimes, I also love the feeling of my body working as it was designed to, feeling the wind rush past, the sun or the rain on my skin.

I think the problem is if you aren't used to it, the first time you start to really get out of breath and red-faced and sweaty, it feels wrong and somehow bad. It takes a while to decide that it's OK and natural to exert yourself.

And it makes me feel less guilt about the times I do sit about with a bit too much to eat and a glass of wine!

amillionyears · 21/05/2012 17:56

DukeHumfrey, do you want to talk a bit more about what happened to you?

Shutupanddrive · 21/05/2012 17:57

Because I'm lazy!
I do like horse riding though, wish I liked running!

Alameda · 21/05/2012 17:57

how can you run out of things to think about!

LOVE exercise even though I am actually a very lazy person, love the feeling of using my body and making it stronger and holding back the tide of cellulite that would probably engulf me without warning, what with my love of pizza and pasta and cheeeeeeese

DukeHumfrey · 21/05/2012 17:59

amillionyears - no, thanks all the same. :)

vixsatis · 21/05/2012 18:03

32GG doesn't help

Exercise is immensely dull and painful

bronze · 21/05/2012 18:07

I liked doing stuff. I hated 'doing exercise'. Would much prefer to learn to row than go on a rowing machine, would walk to the gym then home again, could never follow what they were doing in aerobics etc

Though now I don't do any of it (apart from walk a lot as don't drive) because I get no time to myself and feel like I'm getting unfit. It feels like a downward spiral

LynetteScavo · 21/05/2012 18:14

Exercise give me an unpleasant sensation, which sitting on the sofa does not.

I have never, ever got that buzz, or whatever, some people talk about.

It's a bit like going to work. I wouldn't if someone paid me to stay at home.

LynetteScavo · 21/05/2012 18:17

Mind you, I would go skiing. If I lived somewhere snowy and hilly. Because it's fun, and I don't see it as excise.

LynetteScavo · 21/05/2012 18:17

I'm with you bronze, on the rowing.

bronze · 21/05/2012 18:19

Have you tried it? I haven't but it looks good and suitable for a tall solid person like me who likes being on the water. Going on a rowing machine just does not look interesting fun or anything positive apart from possible to train to go real rowing

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 21/05/2012 18:21

I love running but I have no time now Sad

MaureenMLove · 21/05/2012 18:23

Too lazy, too little time, too much like hard work, too many aches and pains already and ultimately, too many bad excuses! Grin

It's a great source of amusement to my family and friends therefore, that I have just been diagnosed with tennis elbow! Grin

Ratbagcatbag · 21/05/2012 18:23

bloody hell squoosh my zumba instructor is lovely but bloody evil when it comes to class, I can't walk properly sometimes after a session, I found when I started it was quite light impact but now we are seasoned Zumbarettes it's graft all the way, I'm dripping after track 2, by the time I get to 25 I'm dying Grin but strangely enough I keep going back. Bokwa looks mental (zumba on speed mixed with flat step aerobics - you never stop moving for a whole hour) and i start that mid June - this time last year I wouldn't have even considered it.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 21/05/2012 18:24

I don't really like exercise because:

  1. I have asthma which gets set off by dust. Running around inside is horrible for me.
  2. Which leaves outside where it's frequently raining and random people can see me.
  3. In fact, generally people seeing me exercise, I feel real self conscious (I'm not overweight or anything - I just hate it)
  4. I prefer team sports but once you're an adult their either aren't any teams, or the teams take it really seriously, and I'm not that good.
  5. It costs money. Sitting on my tod doesn't. Even if you just go running, you still need decent shoes and something to wear.

I do enjoy being active though, I think I would get on well with a nice well cleaned gym, but they are £££. Ah well.

akaemmafrost · 21/05/2012 18:50

It seems more people hate exercise than not.

I wouldn't know where to start with solving all the exercise issues on here amillionyears Grin

I do honestly believe that if you just persevere a bit you grow to love it and stop noticing the perceived unpleasantness of it though ........

Am starting a rowing course in 2 weeks for those who said they'd like to do that. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm really excited about it.

OP posts:
EvenBetter · 21/05/2012 18:54

I hate it because of PE, because there are 10000000000000 better things for mr to be doing with my life than being in pain, out of breath etc...

There's nothing enjoyable or remotely appealing about it for me.

mamalovesmojitos · 21/05/2012 18:58

It's sooooooo boring.

HeathRobinson · 21/05/2012 19:25

I find exercise mostly boring. Although if I has an indoor pool at home... Grin

That bokwa looks like low-level aerobics Hmm. I was working harder than that in the Eighties doing aerobics, before all the step stuff came in.
