If you don't like exercise, why not?

I run or swim most days. Whenever I mention that have done this I nearly always get the same responses:-

Oh you are good.
God, I couldn't be bothered with that.
I hate exercise!

Seriously, it made me wonder why do people see it as such an evil difficult thing?

So just being nosy really.

I can't swim!

I get my excercise by having a energetic 2 year old

CalamityKate · 21/05/2012 16:59

I hate exercise if it seems pointless.

I absolutely LOVED running when I did the C25K and it's the only exercise I could imagine doing forever, just because I found the challenge of running for longer every time enjoyable. However, when I got to around the "running for 25 minutes" mark my knees started to hurt and by the time I was running for 35 mins, they were hurting all the time, even when resting. I had my gait analysed, bought the right trainers etc but it didn't help and even after I stopped running, my knees took MONTHS to stop hurting :(

I really miss running :(

cardibach · 21/05/2012 17:00

I have recently started exercising more - I go to a personal trainer once a week and walk every day. I now miss it if I don't go, and I enjoy the walking. I don't really enjoy the training sessions, but like their effect. I enjoy walking, and recently surprised myself by enjoying climbing a mountain - actually enjoying the climbing, despite the pain and lack of breath - which I hadn't expected.
I don't enjoy team sports and don't really like anything that causes pain or continuous breathlessness. I just don't enjoy the sensation.

MarySA · 21/05/2012 17:04

I think it stems from compulsory PE at school. And also from the fact that I am bone idle nowadays. I have belonged to gyms in the past and once I got into it sometimes enjoyed it. Don't like swimming except on holiday in a warm climate. Or at a spa type place. As for aerobics and water aerobics. Can't see why anybody would torture themselves in that way.

akaemmafrost · 21/05/2012 17:06

The thing is though, the more you exercise the less pain there will be. Your mood lifts. for me it's just so win win.

I hate team sports as well though. I am taking up rowing but only after I had clarified that I would be able to take sculls out on MY OWN and not as a rowing team.

I hate getting hot, odd because I love hot weather, but I hate getting hot and sweaty. I didn't mind running in winter, and I don't mind swimming. I could swim for hours because i don't get sweaty.

But I don't have the time to swim every day, when I'm not working 14 hour shifts I have both kids all day as they're both preschoolers. When they start full time school I'm sure that will change. From September I will have a whole 2.5 hours with no children at all. I will use that time to MN swim :o

Ryoko · 21/05/2012 17:06

I do sit ups and some twist things I can't remember the name of, I dance around like a loon, play with my nunchucks, practice swordplay with half an old nunchuck that just happens to be exactly the same length as a Katana handle, I do just generally try to keep moving about a bit.

was doing steps today (no stairs in my flat) I was running round in circles stepping up on my sons stepstool (as was he) then it made a crack sound Sad looks ok but will not be doing that again. pretty sure I need to do more things for my bottom half. really want to get a skateboard.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 21/05/2012 17:06

It is a faff, I developed a loathing at school that I've never got past.

Also I have no time.

Does anyone on here who likes exercise, stick to the same sort of exercise for years on end?For some reason I would like to do that, but maybe I am just making excuses. Also have a large bust which is uncomfortable, running wise.

Mythical · 21/05/2012 17:07

It gives me heart palpitations

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 21/05/2012 17:07

And OP the other thing I hate about exercise is people like you who are so insistent that I would love it if only I would make the effort.

Sorry, you did ask Grin

ViviPru · 21/05/2012 17:13

amillion I've done the same step class for about 7 years. We're lucky to have a great instructor who constantly evolves the class. There's a new routine to learn from scratch every month or so.

I love it because it's such complex choreography that you have to concentrate so hard to get the steps right that you don't even notice you're exercising. Then once you get the routine straight in your head, its just the best spinny-dancey-throwing-yourself-about crazy exertion to really good music.

Bad for my knees I know but I can't give up.

Ratbagcatbag · 21/05/2012 17:14

Why is Zumba controversial?

I was still am a bit mega unfit and four stone heavier than I was 8 years ago, I started zumbaing and love it, its the only thing I've stuck too at all, I'm now nowhere near as unfit as I was, but still overweight Grin.

Starting Bokwa soon too.

ViviPru · 21/05/2012 17:17

I only say Zumba is controversial as I've only really seen it derided around here.

AbsofAwesomeness · 21/05/2012 17:20

Zumba is awesome. I also don't get why it's so controversial.

Originally, I was all "Zumba's so lame, you'll never catch me doing it" and then I went to one class, and that's it. I was addicted.

I've done some of the same things for years - yoga and body balance and eliptical trainer. For the classes, the instructor mixes it up so I don't have to think about it, and for going on the eliptical trainer, it's time to listen to music and/or contemplate, or (best ever) watch a movie

QuickLookBusy · 21/05/2012 17:27

I walk the dog everyday and really miss it if for some reason I don't take her.

But I really don't like any other exercise. It's the getting out of breath bit. I start to panic and think I'm going to die. I'm a size eight but I think I'm really unhealthy and should do something which gets the heart pumping.

BackforGood · 21/05/2012 17:31

It hurts
It makes you all sweaty
It takes up time
Some forms cost a lot of money
Swimming makes you smell all chloriney and leaves you with wet hair and you have to get changed in the horrible cold changing rooms
It's just nowhere near as pleasant an experience as sitting with a glass of wine watching TV or MNing Wink

EssexGurl · 21/05/2012 17:35

It is expensive! I am SAHM and can't run as I have a dodgy hip. I did start last year and loved it but my hip went and I ended up needing a lot of osteopath treatment just so I could walk without pain.

So now it means I am stuck with classes or swimming, both of which cost money. I have the time but not the money to go regularly.

squoosh · 21/05/2012 17:38

Ooh I hated Zumba, but those who love it really love it.

To me it felt like a lot of unnecessary twirling and not enough hard graft. If I'm going to spend an hour at an exercise class I want my body to know it! :)

DukeHumfrey · 21/05/2012 17:38

I quite like swimming but I never go. The pool is 5 miles away and only has public swim at silly, inconvenient times.
Don't like other sorts of exercise really - not enough to choose to do them in favour of other stuff which is either a necessary evil (domestic stuff) or enjoyable but sedentary (reading, music, computer, TV). I quite like walking but do that a lot less since something happened to scare me about walking on my own.

Lifeissweet · 21/05/2012 17:40

I don't like exercise for the sake of exercise to be honest. I used to go to the gym, but I always felt guilty after half an hour that I should be doing something more constructive. I don't have enough time in the day as it is!

I cycle to work and back (12 miles a day all in) and walk everywhere I can. I used to row when I lived by the sea - and that was good because I loved being out on the water and the team element made sure I was always pushed quite hard so as not to let the others down. I used to race and that made it seem more worthwhile than just pounding a treadmill.

I am off work on maternity leave having piled on a couple of stones. I feel crap.

CharltonHairstyle · 21/05/2012 17:41

I LOVE tennis - but I have no partner Sad

I

Astr0naut · 21/05/2012 17:43

I hate exercise. I like being active, but not exercising.

I have been a member of a gym for 7 years and, when not on mat leave, go twice a week.

I hate the boredom, the changing, the painful lungs, the boredom, the poseurs.

BrainSurgeon · 21/05/2012 17:44

I'll play very badly tennis with you Charlton
