If you don't like exercise, why not?

I run or swim most days. Whenever I mention that have done this I nearly always get the same responses:-

Oh you are good.
God, I couldn't be bothered with that.
I hate exercise!

Seriously, it made me wonder why do people see it as such an evil difficult thing?

So just being nosy really.

I did too OP! But it's rather joggly for reading!

Have thought about buying/downloading some decent audiobooks and starting again...

TheMonster · 21/05/2012 21:49

I'm lazy. I'd rather be doing something else (or nothing).

And I always think people are laughing at me. It stems from school days.

Tannhauser · 21/05/2012 21:52

Truly, the only thing worse than having to run for the length of time the Archers omnibus is played for would be to have to run whilst listening to it!

Sorry orm Grin

StarlightMcKenzie · 21/05/2012 21:56

No, it doesn't hurt in a good way. I don't even dry my hair after a shower because holding the dryer aches my arm.

Also, when done, I am intensely grumpy and hungry!

Trestle · 21/05/2012 22:00

It's boring, difficult to find the time and it takes a long time to see results.

Born2BRiiiled · 21/05/2012 22:08

That's what I was saying earlier. Exciting exercise is time consuming and expensive. Even boring swimming costs 4 quid a go.

CrunchyFrog · 21/05/2012 22:10

I go purple. Proper purple.

And I want to DIE.

Having said that, I walk between 3 and 6 miles most days, at speed. But that's not exercise, I'm going places.

I was shit at sport at school (the rather special geeky combination of astigmatism, asthma and rather-be-reading). Put me off for life.

amillionyears · 21/05/2012 22:11

I was thinking only yesterday that I need to get motivated.I think I need to sort out whether I want to do it outdoors, with other people, team sport etc.

akaemmafrost · 21/05/2012 22:13

Still exercise crunchyfrog speed walking is brilliant exercise.

SHHHHHHH I'll have to get a taxi now. Wink

mummmsy · 21/05/2012 22:14

just cannot be arsed, can think of a million better things to do, don't really see the long term benefits if they're not immediately obvious, don't like getting sweaty/cold, makes me hungry and tired

mummmsy · 21/05/2012 22:15

oh yeah and purple, i go purple too Grin

CrunchyFrog · 21/05/2012 22:16

It's just not a good look, is it mummmsy. I have a rep to protect, can't be looking like I make an Effort at anything.

scarletforya · 21/05/2012 22:21

I have asthma but it wasn't noticed when I was a kid, didn't really know until my thirties I think. So I unconsciously associated physical activity with suffocation.

God knows I tried though, aerobics 4 times a week at one stage. Never got any fitter. Face purple, lips blue and a taste of blood in my mouth!! Gave up and that's why I don't like exercise!

I can always think of something else I'd rather do, even the housework. I did C25k last year and stuck with it for over a year, which is miraculous for me, but never, ever did I get the urge to go out more than 3 times in a week and I would use any excuse not to go. About one run in three I enjoyed, the others were just a drag. I have had to stop now for health reasons and I am missing it a bit.

I haven't got a competitive bone in my body, so team sports don't appeal, I am not coordinated enough for Zumba etc, gym is boring, swimming is the most tedious pastime ever invented, that's without the smelly dirty changing rooms and crap showers. I like Pilates though.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 21/05/2012 22:37

I like to have a shower in the morning and I like it to be a nice long 20 minute shower.

startail · 21/05/2012 22:38

I'd have to shave my legs and use a pile of petrol and pay to swim.

I've got grotty knees so running and cycling hurt.

mummmsy · 21/05/2012 22:38

first time anyone has even done me in bold Grin

ampere · 21/05/2012 22:41

I do think that being the sort of person who enjoys exercise is like those who leap out of bed at 6am everyday; many just don't get it, those of us who just aren't made that way.

I spent years of my life going to the gym/exercise classes etc. I did it religiously, regularly, properly ... I lost barely an ounce, I never 'got in the zone', I never missed it when I couldn't go now and then.

We cycled 10 to 20 miles once a month, we hill walked when we could (did Snowdon this weekend!), but nothing I'd be able to do regularly enough to declare ' I love exercise and here's the proof!'

I'd love to love exercise but I don't think 'it's for me', sadly!

LadyBeagleEyes · 21/05/2012 22:41

I walk the dog, that is the only exercise I can be arsed with.
I'm very slim, always have been, so sitting with a glass of wine and some unhealthy snacks is my ideal evening.
I also smoke.
I'm a bad bad person.

copycat · 21/05/2012 22:42

Well said WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes Smile

I hate hate hate exercising. I'm very introverted and self-conscious so I could never attend any type of class but I have been going to the gym regularly 4-5 times a week for about 12 years. I resent having to go (and the time it takes up) with a passion. I know I must look miserable; I certainly feel it Grin. I exercise myself into a puddle of sweat and I know I look awful. It would be worth it if I actually lost weight but I don't. Now I am trapped by the fear that if I stop going I will put on weight, so I make myself continue going. Catch 22!

I bet you are glad you asked now akaemmafrost Grin

LadyBeagleEyes · 21/05/2012 22:44

And yes whoknows I'm the least competitive person ever. Grin
I just feel let them have it, WTF, 'am I bothered'?

FunnysInLaJardin · 21/05/2012 22:51

I don't know. I love running or swimming or cycling or a good workout. Provided I can listen to my music throughout. So anything solo where I can challenge myself is good. I just feel really good for a couple of days, then need to do it again. And really and truly, a good run does it for me

Helltotheno · 21/05/2012 22:52

Seeing a fellow gym user blow-drying their minge in the changing rooms. Eew Grin
I can go one worse better though: seeing a fellow gym user insert a tampax in the gym.. yup, that sure can't be unseen Shock

Love swimming and walking, the latter only to music. Running v rarely cos I'm the world's most awful runner... plus it's a bit hard on the bod as you get older imo. I used to hate the idea of sweating but the fitter you get, the less likely to sweaty and purple-faced.

Pilates is the best thing ever for the tum.
