Will post the race list later on computer.
Come one, come all. We are a band of maverick posters who run, talk about running, and talk about other stuff, mostly life, large pants, and questionable children's artwork. Come and join us if you dare! Disclaimer: we are actually the friendliest thread on MN. Fact.

At risk of repeating myself from FB, I reckon it doesn't actually matter what your real max is. The main thing is that if you do use the HRM a lot (even if you just watch it, rather than run to it), you get to understand your body and your effort better, don't you? Having now religiously used it for 6 weeks, I now know that running at 142ish, I can manage 18+ miles (and still be OK the next day!), but I know i can't do much more than 3 or 4 miles running in the upper 160s. At the moment. By continuing to use it, and use it on tempo, hills, intervals and easy runs, I get a much better feeling for my effort level than by using pace (which ignore hills, illness etc) and about what is sustainable. And hopefully get an insight into improving fitness (as the same routes should be quicker/easier for the same HR).

But that's me. Clearly it doesn't work for everone. But I find all that superslow running means I can manage a lot MORE running in a week (since I now run on rest days) and its a lot more enjoyable.

sonic I love the sound of your steps. but not the sub-25min 5k!

orangeLFDThead · 10/01/2012 12:29

Really struggling to keep up at the mo. Thats not good about the dresses bonkers but glad it went ok. Grin at your dad. Got to go to work now this pm Sad could do with out it.

rhetorician · 10/01/2012 13:36

bonkers also sniggering at your poor dad...don't think I said sorry to wheely about her ankle - you might need to look at some strengthening work - I did this after what was actually a pretty minor strain a few years back and it did help a good deal. Bummer for you.

Feeling slightly fraudulent bumbling along while you all put your new year's resolutions in action.

We are trying to work out dairy free in this house, as DP just cut it out, and dd2 has been much more settled and much less stinky farty (to dd1's mild disappointment) - DP reckons that it doesn't really agree with her. I tell you, we are inches away from being complete cranks...

DebiTheScot · 10/01/2012 13:40

Nightmare about the dresses bonkers, was the bride aware of the traumas at the time? Hope she complains and gets her money back. Glad to hear the rest of it went well.

I don't have a clue about heart rate other than knowing my resting hr is higher than it should be.

Did 5 miles in 45 mins this morning while ds2 was at pre-school. The furthest I've done since the middle of Nov. I tried not to push the speed as I've been mostly short runs recently I keep trying to run at 5k pace and no way can my shins (or the rest of me) can keep that up for more than 5k. It was nice being able to run off road (along a river path) and in daylight on a weekday.

Circuits later too, looking forward to it after 4 weeks off.

Wheelybug · 10/01/2012 13:50

Hi all,

Thsnks for all your good wishes. ankle a bit better today- actually really bit my ankle which I think is probably a good thing but don't really know what I've done. The tendons (or is it ligaments) below the ankle bone are fine. It's the ankle bone bit itself and above it. Not too sore to walk on and think swelling went down overnight but come up again so am icing again.

Glad wedding basically went well bonkers !

All the talk of HRMs sounds far too confusing although I do have one somewhere to go with my garmin .

orange meant to say, thanks for advice re arnica. Might be able to get done tomorrow ! Used it with c secs and I had pretty good recoveries. I have done cream in the house somewhere but think it's about 6 years old.

I too am looking for holiday ideas for the summer hols. Duracel bunny dd2 is a bit of a night mare on planes so we can't face long haul. We could manage maybe 6-7 hours.... Maybe....

Wheelybug · 10/01/2012 13:51

Well done on the run debi

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 10/01/2012 15:40

I agree with Runningallday re: HRM use. Since I have been using mine I seem much less likely to get fatigued and have to take several unscheduled rest days. As a result I am running further each week and feeling better. My low HR pace is slowly creeping up too.

Did a fairly fast and hill 5.8 mile club run last night - felt good but I did slightly go over on one ankle on rough ground and I have been feeling it a bit today. Did 4.9 miles on the treadmill with HRM today (1hour).

Bonkers - sounds like a fairly typical set of wedding crises Grin. Weddings seem to invite things to go wrong.
Was your Dad really embarrassed - it could have been worse - at least he had pants on.

rhetorician · 10/01/2012 15:50

yes, I agree with running - without actually doing a full test on a treadmill you're unlikely to find your max - you can keep revising it based on experience - e.g. at the end of a race, or during a tough hill session. But if you work with the basic 220 minus age formula you won't go too far wrong - usually it's +5 for someone who has been running/exercising regularly for more than 2 years, -10 if you have been very sedentary

fannybanjo · 10/01/2012 16:07

Just checked my Garmin heart rate stats. It seems I am not looking at correct stat - I hadn't checked the average Blush so it seems my body working better than I think, on a easy recovery pace run 10m/m heart rate 135. On a 6.30m/m intervals average was 176. On a steady run it was 158 and on a 12 miler at 9.15m/m it was 168. My
Maximum is 198. Rhet does that make more sense?

fannybanjo · 10/01/2012 16:09

The one that strikes me as being too high is LSR. That's exactly the one that I need to slow down on. I had chat with friend before - she seems to get what I mean but it'll take a lot of willpower on her part not to speed up. Heart rate monitor definitely going on for LSR.

bonkers I had a Dessy bridesmaid dress when I was a bridesmaid for my cousin - it was quite nice. What was up with yours?

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 10/01/2012 16:30

Ooh bonkers your poor dad! The dress looked lovely in the pics, hope it didn't detract from the day as a whole.

No run for me today, have ds3 all day and DH will be too late tonight for me to get out. Thank goodness for the shred, at least I can do something at home. Will definitely get out tomorrow though.

Am in awe of all these super speedy times.

Back doing the school run today - bleurgh.

Holidays - we usually go to Portugal because it's so easy, plenty to do and see, lovely food and people (especially with children). Also a fan of Majorca which has some amazing unspoilt parts. Loved Lanzarote but was 48 degrees when we took the boys there! That's all we've done with the boys. Friends speak very highly of Dubai for family holidays, especially at Easter. Would love to take the boys to South Africa or Australia as we had amazing hols there pre dcs, but I'd prefer ds3 to be a little older. Have also been to some other places which were amazing for adults but not so much for dcs. And I've always wanted to do a ranch holiday in the US!

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 10/01/2012 16:31

But will be camping this year as trying to save some pennies!

fannybanjo · 10/01/2012 16:32

What pics?! Have I missed wedding pics on FB...? Grrr FB on phone is fucking poo.

Wheelybug · 10/01/2012 16:51

Where do you go in Portugal and menorca (or was it Majorca, can't scroll back) shred ? I have only been to Portugal once and it wasn't a particularly great place (we were young and on a cheapy so weren't expecting much and we had a great holiday but not a part we'd venture back to). We don't want anywhere big but more than 1 villa (with the hope of some
Other kids to entertain mine.... Or a small kids club). Our main problem is what we want to do isn't what the dds want to do !

Wheelybug · 10/01/2012 16:52

The only time I've been to the canaries the volcanicity really aggravated my asthma although that was 20 years ago ! Plus 48 is a bit hot. All of us are fine with it pretty hot (previously done Greece and Italy in august with no problem).

rhetorician · 10/01/2012 16:56

fanny yes that looks about right - if max is 198, then your numbers (using a slightly more accurate formula than a crude %) would be

70% 153
75% 161
80% 168
85% 175
90% 183

so you have a lot of working heart capacity, because you have a fairly high max, and as I recall, a fairly low resting HR. So I'd say that your training paces are pretty close to perfect, actually. Lucky you - my max is lower (I assume), and my resting about the same, so that gives me less to work with IYSWIM, thus I am a slower runner. Nothing you can do to change your max, btw - although there is apparently no correlation between max and performance

stickyLFDTfingers · 10/01/2012 16:56

I have a yen to go to Majorca's nice bits!

We're back to Austria this year, in the Vorarlberg. We're going back to the same house as before - it's beautiful, on the side of a mountain, mountain views and goats and walking etc. The girls can run around and build dens etc to their heart's content. Last year we had a few days sunbathing and then it snowed! I love it in the mountains, can't wait to get back.

DP wants to hire an RV and drive up the West Coast of the US and Canada, that's the holiday dream. I actually am happy wherever I am warm and it's sunny and scenic. Add in good food and wine.... very happy sticky....

fannybanjo · 10/01/2012 17:04

Oh rhet I love you - you do the things for me that I'd never do! Thank you so much. Sooo am I in the right range for my heart rate for each particular run?

rhetorician · 10/01/2012 17:26

looks like fanny - lsr should be around 70-75%, threshold about 80-85, intervals all out at 90/95 - you can always run it through the macmillan calculator, but that doesn't take hr into consideration - the only one that looks off to me is the 12 miler at 168 - that's about 80% and you'd do well to pull it down a little, I'd say

squix · 10/01/2012 17:32

sonic Shock at that programme! Good Luck!

bonkers sounds like the wedding was a bit of a mixed bag. Glad it went well in the main.

Holidays - we are very lucky and have a relative who has a house in Italy that we can use - although we might not be able to borrow it for much longer as this is the last year we can travel outside of school hols.

5 miles for me this morning in 48 mins, really quite enjoyed it.

rhetorician · 10/01/2012 18:09

holidays - can't see much on the horizon for this year tbh - we have to visit the dds' dad and family in England in late June, so will probably try and add on a seaside rental or something to that (Wales?) or maybe the Lakes as dp has never been, plus I have a conference in Oxford in early July.

Last year we went to the Pyrenees - the med end, and it was wonderful - but I think time, money and logistics are all against us for foreign travel this year. But next year I'd like to do the Portugal villa thing - perhaps SIL and cousin could come, and maybe my mum for a bit

peachsmuggler · 10/01/2012 18:19

Good to have ideas for hols. We didn't go away last year, but year before we took DD1 to San Francisco and California and it was fantastic. Might go to France or Italy this summer, but al going for quick flying visit to Cork at end of March for DP's cousin's wedding, if I ever get my finger out and get DD2 a passport!

Well just as my running career gets started again, DP has got a job. Damnation!!!! It's a 6 month contract. He got it about 3 months ago but has been waiting on security clearance coming through as is with police. Found out today he starts on Monday. Obviously good that we won't be destitute but this means I will have to parent two children, aaarrgghhh, and no running in day : ( Guess I will run once at weekend and do powerpramming on Thursday. When DD2 is bigger and going to bed at decent hour in evening then guess I can once they are in bed, or something. Also when pram is converted to buggy, rather than with carrycot, i.e. She is strapped in, can start running with it.

peachsmuggler · 10/01/2012 18:22

Glad you enjoyed the wedding bonkers, despite the wardrobe malfunction!!!

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 10/01/2012 18:29

wheely have been to the Albufeira area (Santa Eulalia) a couple of times (hotel and villas), last year we went to a beautiful place called the Martinhal at Sagres, lovely beach and very beautiful surroundings but it was hideously expensive and we won't be affording it this year (chose it because you could have your own villa with pool but still use the resort childcare/restaurants etc). I have to say Portugal has always had the best childcare/kids clubs, we've always felt the children are very safe and well looked after, and staff who actually enjoy being with children. Bit embarrassing when your children cry because they don't want to leave the club, but still ..... Grin.

Majorca was a villa, we went to Pollensa - have also been to Menorca which is very pretty to a small resort called Santo Tomas.

Lanzarote was a great hotel but yes 48 degrees just a bit much. We barely got out of the pool which was a shame.

Also went to a villa in Spain, nice enough but the villa was a deathtrap for children and the resort was awful.

sticky has reminded me of some lovely holidays in Switzerland - Wengen and Zermatt. Ummmmm, cake .......
