Will post the race list later on computer.
Come one, come all. We are a band of maverick posters who run, talk about running, and talk about other stuff, mostly life, large pants, and questionable children's artwork. Come and join us if you dare! Disclaimer: we are actually the friendliest thread on MN. Fact.

I'll have to look back on my runs where I used it. I have told my friend off today though and told her I am not doing 8.30m/m miles in 22-24 mile runs - there's no need to - its going to burn me out. She however pushes me to get good times which I understand we all want to do but I'm doing my actual LSR training runs at faster frigging pace than my intended marathon pace! ConfusedHmm so next LSR of big mileage will be wearing HRM and forcing her to slow down.

fannybanjo · 09/01/2012 22:22

rhet that's strange re your heart rate. Could it be related to low iron?

rhetorician · 09/01/2012 22:24

probably not, more likely that my max is lower than I think it is

rhetorician · 09/01/2012 22:26

also according to my book when you get to a certain level of aerobic fitness it gets harder and harder to reach the higher heart rates - you are doing most of your running probably at threshold - but it seems to work well for you (I think this is how the Kenyans train, basically), although I do think that your LSRs shouldn't be run at race pace - not least because it will get harder and harder to recover from them

fannybanjo · 09/01/2012 22:33

Ah you see rhet I know this re LSR but unfortunately I feel under pressure as I'm running with someone else HOWEVER after Friday's run and hitting the wall - I need to do it at 9.30m/m - to 10m/m. If I can comfortably do 24 miles at that continual pace in training, I'll know I can up my pace slightly on marathon day. I mean, we ran 20 miles at 8.56m/m - it's hilarious because I'm not going to be doing first marathon at that pace. Hmm I've told her today that next one we do, it's going to be at a very easy pace. Hard though when you train with someone else and I did tell her on Friday to run on at her own pace. I'm putting foot down though plus she's leaving for Oz soon Sad so I'll be doing majority of long runs alone so can dictate.

Wheelybug · 09/01/2012 22:46

Welcome newbies ! Wow at shred at 5 am ... And then a run. Well done.

Thanks for sympathy (particularly From the other Brighton half-ers). Going to see how it is over the next couple of days. Appears not to be ankle as such - as sciencebint has pointed out elsewhere that would be below the ankle joint and my pain and swelling in on and above.

Anyway, am boring myself about it and must keep reminding myself worse things happen at sea (one reason not to do a triathlon Wink). But will take to the pool and bike for rest of the week at least.

sfxmum · 09/01/2012 22:51

wheely hope the recovery goes well and in time for Brighton

regarding HR I don't think I understand it at all, should just read about it properly

total change of subject

someone mentioned proposal, that never happened with us, it never crossed my mind that it would, we sort of decided to go and sign papers and have a party, is that weird?

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 09/01/2012 22:52

fanny the compromise I've read, suggested by Hal Higdon and others, is to run at a comfortable pace for 2/3rds of your LSR then up the pace for the last 1/3rd.

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 09/01/2012 22:53

Oh and will tell you all sometime about DH's proposal, it was hilarious.

peachsmuggler · 09/01/2012 23:08

Oooh tell us shred!!!!

sfx, yeah, we're not married but if we did I suspect it would happen something like that. I think if either of us wanted to get married then the other one would do it, but we don't so that's ok then! Smile. how are you feeling tonight?

fanny, you are absolutely right. Can't imagine holding back too much on these runs, but for long term injury free running I think you're going to have to slow down a bit!

Didn't make it to the running shop in the end, as don't much like clothes shopping and had enough after a while. Highlight was panini, coffe, and cake in Caffe Nero Grin

sfxmum · 09/01/2012 23:18

yes shred do tell

peach much better thanks managed to eat and keep from around 2pm crackers and bit more later, will run tomorrow regardless I think

  • so you avoided the chilli chocolate? that stuff is medicinal as far I am concerned
squix · 09/01/2012 23:44

wheely Sad again? Poor thing - hope its not too bad and doesn't hold you back. Take it easy.

Hello new folk - great to see lots more runners here Grin.

No running for me yesterday or today and I am itching to get out. Tomorrow I might be able to get out in the morning before afternoon of meetings, or get in a session at the running club tomorrow evening - either session will be a tempo run, I think.

sfx no proposal for us either. We just sort of decided to do it, then went off to Vegas to get married, had a party when we got back. DD always picks up on the Vegas thing and gets very excited whenever she hears it mentioned.

squix · 10/01/2012 00:04

Oh and well done this weekend's racers.

Bumply - anticlockwise is my preferred direction round Arthur's Seat. My old flat was just on the roundabout at the Meadowbank entrance to the park, so I would run up the hill to start with to get it out the way - I always think that going that way is steeper but shorter.

SonicMiddleAge · 10/01/2012 05:11

Everyone - thanks for nice comments about my run.
Rhet when I was anemic I used it as carte blanche to eat all the pecan nuts I wanted, under the guise that it was good for me... I also have a great receipe for chickpea and parsley soup which I make when I get anemic. Other than that I found the chewable haribou tablets with iron seems more digestable longer term than other.
wheely hope your ankle sorts itself out ok.
Have been given some interesting running homework - suggestion for HM training when I have more limited time to train than I'd like, and therefore will only get in two runs at the full distance. It's meant to to help me do the last 5km on race day at a decent pace on tired legs, when I'm more used to running 16km runs, so for a shorter session was to incororate it into my home run one day, run 1kmn to Jacobs ladder (242 steps) climb it twice or if i'm feeling good three times, then a 5km sprint home, aiming to get the sprint in under 25 min. I think it sounds horrendous...

peachsmuggler · 10/01/2012 08:04

sonic, that sounds like torture, and therefore probably very good training! My legs would be like Jelly after even one time up those steps!

Superspudable · 10/01/2012 08:08

Wow - really trying to keep up - school PTA meeting got in the way last night!!

Binned idea of long run in the day today as am running with friend from running group tonight as long as DH home in time from late meeting... might shred in a mo instead.. Need to as had pastries (again) for breakfast... Still considering 10k at end of Jan Wink

Think the HRM monitor stuff is a little advanced for me atm - using nike+ sportswatch (too cool for garmin!!) and like its simplicity and the goals on the site are really motivating and make it easy to see my improvements.

glitch - your running schedule sounds a bit like mine Smile

SonicMiddleAge · 10/01/2012 08:34

peach yes I thnk the lactic acid build up is going to be a nightmare! I'll let you know how it goes...
fanny based on your recent posts, I take back what I previously said about happy to talk to your friend about running when she moves out here - she sounds far too scary!

bonkersLFDT20 · 10/01/2012 08:53

Hellooooo,
Wedding was fab. Dress wasn't great TBH (BM's that is, the bride's was perfect!).

I do not recommend Dessi dresses, nor the bridal shop my sister used.

3 adult BMs. One sister's hook an eye popped off the top of the zip (fixed with safety pin). One sister's zip totally broke and she had to be sewn in to the dress by a neighbour while the wedding car was waiting to take them to the ceremony! My dress didn't break, but it was too big. It was fine around the torso ie I think they got the right size, but the bust was not shaped to fit my ample bosom....oh sorry, my tiny boobs so it kept slipping. Ah well, we all actually looked fine.

Oh and the bridal shop did not include the hoop for the bride's dress (which turned out to be fine actually, but at the time she was v. disappointed).

DH turned up and did what he needed to do as far as minding DS2 was concerned (DS1 was busy with his cousin making bombs out of party poppers and putting tea bags down the lift shaft... Hmm) but in general didn't really enjoy it.

My Dad managed to lock himself out of his hotel room in his underpants at 4am thinking the room door was the bathroom door!

Very proud of lots of people as both Mums were missing. Mine passed away nearly 2 years ago and the bridegroom's only a few weeks ago. I think his family are still in the shock/disbelief stage of grief TBH.

Anyway, anyway. 1/2 marathon training starts properly now that my head has been emptied of Xmas and wedding stuff!

LFDT!!!!!

Will catch up with all the news later and stop being such an egocentric bonkersbridemaidzilla!

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 10/01/2012 09:03

bonkers sorry to hear the wedding traumas but glad to hear it was good overall.

welcome all the new peeps.

belatedly - DP met in Aix en Provence in 2000 when we were there for our Uni degrees. I spotted DP on the first day in the fac de lettres and thought hmm, tasty. Then in the evening all the foreign students were meeting up at a cafe, DP arrived late and claims he decided to sit next to the prettiest girl there - well, he ended up sitting next to me

Then we split up a few times before getting back together for good in 2003. And he prposed in 2008 in France again under a starlit sky by the gorge du verdon complete with shooting stars. Finally getting married this May!

Working at home today so I am going for a lunctime short maintenance run.

stickyLFDTfingers · 10/01/2012 09:21

bonkers sounds like you had a good day despite all the dress mishaps (you'd think a bridal shop would know about the importance of getting it right, really). LOL at your Dad! Poor chap, hope he didn't meet too many people Wink

cherry how very romantic! When you're not being a lawyer, mother and runner, perhaps you should base a novel around your story. If nothing else it sounds warm.

sonic that sounds like a terrifying schedule. I'd worry about tripping up on the steps when tired (but I am a total klutz). You'd have buttocks of steel!

Enjoying have a rest day today. I slept so well last night :)

cestlavie · 10/01/2012 09:56

Sounds like it all went well in the end bonkers. Sounds like a particularly memorable day for your dad... and any other hotel guests who were wandering around at 4.00am....!

Very kind of you to say that heart rate thing is due to being 'fast' rhet but know that my heart rate should stay lower on slower/ shorter runs and only get up to those levels on tempo runs. Which tells me that I'm doing some runs far too fast and/ or my fitness isn't as good as it should be (if it was then presumably for a given level of effort, your heart rate should get lower over time as you get fitter?)

sonic that sounds a shocking schedule! I actually feel a little sick just thinking about the sub 25 min 5K after 2-3 steps sessions.

Good 5 mile run this morning, though with a couple of stops for traffic. Average 7.20 m/m though think this might have been flattered by stops.

On an entirely separate note, am in need of holiday ideas for this year. DW and I were trying to figure out interesting holiday destination for Easter or May half term. Got about as far as Oman or Morocco (which I love) but any other ideas where people have been and loved round that time of year?

sfxmum · 10/01/2012 10:22

bonkers your poor day Smile but every wedding needs stories like that. Glad it all turned out ok in the end.

cherry I expect you have it all sorted for May? will it be in France?

sonic sounds hard but you seem determined to get the best out of the time you have, good luck

dd has been asking to do The Pink Race which to her mean the race for life thing, my first ever racing experience, so I might enter it with her and we can walk and run it and she can get her second medal.
Will go out and run a bit later

we are both looking for work, January not always the best month for it

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 10/01/2012 10:29

cest am not sure of the ages fo your kid(s) and your budget/propensity for long haul, but DP and I loved South African. although it's long haul it's only a couple of hours behind (or ahead?) so no jet lag issues. Lots of lovely beaches on garden route and you could go to a game park for safari for kids. Or italy - DP and I saw a program last Friday on Sicility - presented by chef locatelli and an art critic chap whose name I can't remember, and were reminscing about our italian escapes a few years back. Would probably be reasonably warm at that time of year.

we are going to the lake district for our honeymoon in May and Tenby in September for Ironman Wales. It's all glamour round here.

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 10/01/2012 10:34

sfx we are not sorted at all really ... . Would love it to be in France, and that would be apt, but it's quite tricky to get married there if you aren't resident. Got the registry office booked and local lovely restarant for 30 friends afterwards, photographer booked and my dress is ordered. Just mulling over evening options, plus little things like transport, flowers, menu choices, ceremony, rings, DP and DS outfits.

Shock lots to do

fannybanjo · 10/01/2012 10:58

Just quickly to add to what cest says re heart rate - I agree with rhet in respect of always running at threshold pace but also agree with you cest re fitness. I think it's because I only do one form of exercise and my heart only knows running. If I swam or cycled too, my all round fitness would improve.
