Will post the race list later on computer.
Come one, come all. We are a band of maverick posters who run, talk about running, and talk about other stuff, mostly life, large pants, and questionable children's artwork. Come and join us if you dare! Disclaimer: we are actually the friendliest thread on MN. Fact.

happy anniversaries orange and peach (we do that too, well from when we first met, which sort of turned into a sort of date ...). I think Lie-ins and curries sound an ideal way to celebrate - your expectations change over the years!

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 08/01/2012 13:49

Here's an interesting if irrelevant question - how did we meet our OHs?

We met doing the Solicitors Finals, London 1991. I had just left university, DH had come back to London from Sweden due to a broken engagement with a broken heart Sad and had bizarrely decided to become a solicitor. Our eyes met across a crowded lecture and it was love Smile.

sfxmum · 08/01/2012 14:06

We met in April '95 started dating in November and lived together since March '96 married March '02
I first saw in in the news but met him at work. We are old

Wheelybug · 08/01/2012 14:28

We met in December 97 - we were set up by friends, a couple. I was sharing a house with her doing an MA in Shropshire, DH was living with him in London. They
Made us speak on the phone and then invited me to their house party and
That was it. First date Jan 98, I moved in to where he was living in may 98 and we got our own place October 98. Married 2000. Still can't shake him off Wink

peachsmuggler · 08/01/2012 15:06

We met dec 2001, in a pub in Glasgow through a mutual friend. We were both living in south London at the time, and when I found this out I asked him to go for drink. Did so in Jan 2002, moved in together in 2004 Smile

sfx, in the news! Is your DH famous and/or a criminal? Wink

YeahThatsTheBadger · 08/01/2012 15:16

Ahh! Wot luverly stories!

I starting working where dh was working. Had never spoken to me but as he walked past, he likened my hair (ginger) to the colour of a cd he had in his hand (!) which just so happened to be my favourite band. Got chatting and started dating a few weeks later.

So, I had my scan yesterday and all is well. She could see all 4 chambers of the babys heart, which she said was unusual. All is well with the baby and in the right place so I went to the gym this morning and ran 5k on the treadmill and another 2 on the bike. Took it a bit slower and steadier today and my knee felt a lou better for it. Phew.

Well done bumply and happy anniversaries orange and peach.

RunningAllDay · 08/01/2012 15:27

Firstly, well done on bumply on your PB. Great goody bag - far better than mine!

So, race report for South West Road Runners First Chance 10k. Course was completely flat, tarmac or well-trodden track on quite a scenic double-loop around the Exeter Quay and Canal area.

Met my training buddy at the start for pre-race wee, we warmed up (which I rarely do) and positioned ourselves about halfway back after looking at last years results. All the local running clubs out in force. Lovely sunny morning and not too cold. I had sent my Garmin Virtual Partner at 8:23 min/mile (corresponding to a 52 min finish) which I thought was realistic but a stretch target (given my previous and only timed 10k had me coming in just under an hour, though I have achieved 54min on training, but on hills). My friend thought we should go for sub-50 min (8:03 min/mile), which given that she has been ill for 6 weeks and done almost no training, I thought was a bit mad.

Stuck together for the first mile or so, overtook a lot of people and did 8 min/mi quite comfortablely. Lost her during the second mile, but I could see her behind me so carried on at same speed. Got a little slower in mile 4 but was feeling very good. Looked at my HR in mile 5 was alarmed that it was at my 95% number (which may be underestimated, but even so, I normally only get this on hills). By the start of mile 6 I felt I wasn't going to manage sub-50 min, but kept up what I could and managed a bit of a spurt at the end which brought me in at 50:16. My buddy came in a few minutes later looking very grey.

So, extremely pleased with my result as I didn't think myself capable, though those 16 secs are going to haunt me now. I also think my HR max needs adjusting as I should not be able to maintain such theoretically high effort for so long. For anyone vaguely interested in the course or my splits, see here

Goody 'bag' consisted of SWRR trainer carry case, which is quite nice - there were towels too, but I think they ran out.

Hope ibby had a god race too - a god race? a good race! and very happy anniversary peach and orange. Lovely to read your meeting stories - and interested to hear why sfx's DH was in the news? Is he a newsreader?

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/01/2012 15:39

I reckon sfx is married to Huw Edwards Wink

running sounds like you ran a good race! Do you think your HR max could have increased since you calibrated it last due to improved fitness (this is a very uneducated guess, I know nothing about it). Well done! Reckon your next 10k on the flat will be sub 50 :)

Lovely first meeting stories! DP and I met at a garden party. It was very scenic (Clare College gardens in Cambridge), but we had both been drinking all afternoon Blush so who knows what crap we were talking for the next 6 hours! Seemed to work out OK tho - that was June 94 and we're still here.

So did no one do the Mills & Boon - I hated him at first, the arrogant bastard, but then could not resist his chiselled jaw and ended up underneath him on his yacht... perhaps that doesn't happen in RL after all Shock

RunningAllDay · 08/01/2012 15:43

Hey sticky what years were you at Clare? I was at Christs 94-97...

Thanks - was just so pleased to have found a flat race, I wil have to do it again next year!

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/01/2012 15:45

I wasn't, I was at New Hall and DP was at Clare. I was 93-97 (law with year abroad) so we were in the same city at the same time! How funny! Desperately trying to think did I know people at Christs that year...

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/01/2012 15:46

are you on FB (she asks ignorantly!) running?

rhetorician · 08/01/2012 15:48

hello all - from a grey and dreary london - good running going on, races, training Envy; I am being regaled with things like 'did I tell you the saga of my scarf?' 'um, no, Mum, you didn't' Hmm and how my mother's life makes no sense because I have failed to pony up an actual grandchild.

meeting stories; my DP was originally a student of mine - she walked into my office and I was in shock because I had only been in Dublin about 3 weeks and thought that there weren't any lesbians. Anywhere. At all. Perhaps in a basement somewhere. Hmm, we both said to ourselves, independently. Fast forward 2 years (i.e. post graduation for her - my god we were so proper!) and I meet her after a summer of handling sheep and making hay (I kid you not) and I say 'oh hello, you look well', meaning you look healthy etc, not realising that to an irish person that phrase means 'I think you are bloody gorgeous' (which is what I thought, and still do). That was 16 years ago!

RunningAllDay · 08/01/2012 15:50

I am, but so far have not joined the crowd as I have made it a rule not to add anyone that I don't know in RL! However, am getting Envy of your secret club... will PM you my name. My very best friend in the world was at New Hall 94 to 97 and now lives 20 miles away from me here in Devon....

Wheelybug · 08/01/2012 15:51

One of my best friends was at christs 93-96. did Maths.

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/01/2012 15:52

rhet that's lovely - lucky for you there are those few semantic differences!

Your Mum's stories sound fascinating... and still Angry on your behalf - FFS, there you are happy, healthy, successful, beautiful family, leader in your field career-wise - what the hell more does she want? Angry

Wheelybug · 08/01/2012 15:52

Hope you escape soon rhet

sfxmum · 08/01/2012 15:54

badger that is good news Smile
running good report and good result. I aspire to sub 60 for 10k but don't think it us realistic for my next race

Husband was in the news because his passport was stolen in Turkey and was promptly used by a drug trafficker to try and smuggle into UK (diff photo) he was caught and much confusion ensued with relatives not up to date with misadventure

The Sun then did 'an interview' where dh came out sounding somewhat to the right of Genghis Khan

YeahThatsTheBadger · 08/01/2012 15:57

Well done running!

rhet think happy thoughts and you'll be home with dp and dd's soon enough. Will you be able to get out for a run?

sfxmum · 08/01/2012 15:58

rhet and now the absence at Christmas seems like such a blessing Grin

rhetorician · 08/01/2012 15:58

sticky at my time of life, a flipping miracle, clearly!

Wheelybug · 08/01/2012 16:00

And great news badger. Glad all is well. How many weeks ?

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/01/2012 16:04

badger that is very good to hear! And great that you can get back to exercising too.

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/01/2012 16:05

Grin rhet

peachsmuggler · 08/01/2012 16:07

Ha ha, sticky, no Mills and Boon here. Quite the opposite of the romantic start. It was a real slow burn with neither of us being too sure. Never had that initial crazyabouteachother honeymoon period, but it just started to work and felt better and better as it went on. After 10 years together it isn't perfect, and it isn't always easy, but I love him and he's the right man for me Smile

running, wow! Am very impressed with your time, and sounds like you ran a good race. Think your friend was a little foolhardy though!!! Smile

I did the same 3 mile route today and it was a lot easier. Did it in 31.45 so bit more than 2 mins faster than Thursday. Combination of the fact I was taking it really slow on Thursday, it not being rainy/windy/ it being the second run/ and me wearing the right shoes!!

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/01/2012 16:13

peach that's great. Now, at 2 mins off each run you should be down to 20 in a couple of weeks Wink. Seriously, you're doing great, I wish I'd got back to it as quickly after dd2.
