Good luck for Sunday running jez sonic and ibby - hope your conditions are all OK.

I did have a Grin at all the ?run like the wind? wishes - wind speed must be about 35-40 mph outside my house at the moments - which could be good depending on which bit of the course we?re on and which direction we are running in. I am expecting a battle against the elements tomorrow, there has been snow on higher ground and slightly north of were the race is but I think where the course is, is OK. I just hope my antlers don?t blow off.

badger - congratulations ? lovely news.

My answers to checklist

lots of them have red hair or red haired children ? no ? we are all dark haired
lots of them have girl children - yes
they all have a social conscience ? yes
they are not scared of speaking their minds especially to random strangers up to no good - yes
they are generally averse to ironing and most housework ? most definitely
PLUS you have forgotten:
they are generally short ? No 5?7
And I do like a survey Smile

My shred DVD has come out of the draw and I have hand weights ordered ? I?m not going to be able to keep it at bay for much longer?..

Crap telly and breastfeeding??.hmmmm hate to admit it but I watched far too much of Katie Price and Peter Andre whilst doing that ? I can still remember her wedding?.

Weight loss ? I think everyone is different ? for some it?s calories, for some it's portion control, for some it?s low fat. I found cutting down on carbs worked for me for a period of time ? with recognition that it?s not for ever. Plus all the things we know about - booze, junk, too much coffee(she says with her 2nd large black of the day ? I am trying to finish off a project for work). I also think that there is a difference between what we need to eat to lose weight and what we need to eat to maintain a healthy weight or one we are happy with (with a recognition that there are just some habits that will do us no good). I would say I am probably in the best shape I have been in as an adult at the moment ? which may not be as good as shape as some, but it?s good for me - and I have worked bloody hard to get here. I am just waiting for the weight gain and difficulty in losing weight that comes with the menopause.

Right back to work.....

futurity · 26/11/2011 11:02

Thanks all for nice words about tempo run ...I am now eating a Boost chocolate bar as recovery food Wink

I printed out the Runners World Smart Coach plan for my Cambridge Half (15 weeks to go!) and it had speedwork/tempo runs on a Saturday so thought I would give it a go today. It's definitely what I need to increase my pace over longer distances as I am quite capable of blasting out a quickish 3 miles but have never really attempted anything longer. When I look ahead to later weeks it looks so daunting but I will just take it each run at a time.

futurity · 26/11/2011 11:02

Oh I do own Shred...but is scares me! Blush

DrNortherner · 26/11/2011 11:12

Quick post. Marking my place. Niece coming home today, safe and sound Smile

Good luck to the weekends racers. Dh is working tonight so I get free time to MN for as long as I like without him looking at me like this Hmm

6 mile run with 2 dogs this morning as we are dog sitting for a friend. I had them both on a lead, 1 either side for about 1.5 miles and I controlled them both perfectly. Cesar Milan is shitting himself.

I also wore my new headband and felt a bit like it gave me more bounce Grin

Talk more tonight.

rhetorician · 26/11/2011 11:34

have just tried out DD2's name on DD1 and it has not met with approval - DD1's suggestions are 'masha' Hmm and she did seem to approve of jennifer which was on the list but rejected (I tested this out to see if she understood what we were asking)

DebiTheScot · 26/11/2011 11:36

It's taken me 3 stints to catch up.

I don't do well at the survey with brown haired boys. Dh has ginger stubble tho. A lot of us do seem to have single sex children. A few us have the same first name too.

Can't remember who said what but someone said they won't have more children in case they have more boys. I won't have more in case I had a girl Grin

DrNo my dh looks at me like Hmm that too.
I made him do shred the other night, his press ups were hilariously bad! I need to move onto level 2.

I did parkrun this morning. First run in 10 days and I've got a cough but I wanted to do it. It's all off road so thought it'd be a good first run back for the shin. I took it easy so I didn't get breathless and the shin kept fluctuating between sore & not sore. I was trying to put my foot down differently to see if that helped but I'm not really sure how I should put my feet down.
I put cheap Aldi cushioned insoles in my shoes a couple of weeks ago, could they have caused the problems?

runnerstipple · 26/11/2011 11:37

Futurity, your scared me with the 15 weeks to go until Cambridge comment, as I had it in my head that it was longer. I'll have a look at that plan, but to be honest at the moment I'm just hoping I'm going to be able to get around. Its really scarey how quickly I seem to have lost my fitness after HM at the end of September. I've cut right back and tried to rest my hip, not that it seems to be working, and nearly died doing 2.5 miles earlier this week. I can't begin to see how I'm going to get round 13 miles in 15 weeks if I can't up the mileage soon.

runnerstipple · 26/11/2011 11:38

you, not your

futurity · 26/11/2011 11:54

Runnerstipple - I know..15 weeks doesn't seem long does it. This is the link to the Smart Coach www.runnersworld.co.uk/racing/runners-world-smartcoach/3057.html and I have used it (roughly) for most events I have done. There is plenty of time to build the mileage up..you don't even have to get to 13 before the day (although saying that I will be as it makes me feel more confident to do so).

Fanny what is the demented face for?

15 weeks until Cambridge?! Ballsarama, better sort out my training schedule

fannybanjo · 26/11/2011 13:15

5 kids and 2 ladies looking after them with wine involved last night = demented face Grin

OP posts:
Hatwoman · 26/11/2011 13:37

Ok ? I?ve tried to get through the whole thread to do a proper post to you all ? but I?ve run out of time and am only half-way through ? so apologies for my lack of diligence.

cherry (if I may call you that) ? birth no1 is rarely an indicator of what will happen with no2. I had a hideous 36 hour marathon with dd1. dd2 took about 3 hours (which meant dh had to deliver her but that was a minor issue and makes a good dinner party story Grin)

debi keep on at your insurers ? ime they do anything to rip us off. I called our insurers to just check that our travel insurance included travel for work. I got told it didn?t. So I asked where in the policy it said that, pointing out that the policy covers ?any trip? and there is no mention of the purpose of the trip. After a number of conversations with her superviser the woman admitted it didn?t say that in the policy because they can?t include ?everything? in writing ? but it definitely wasn?t covered because she was telling me it wasn?t and our conversation was being recorded Confused; I pointed out that this was changing the terms of a contract and asked to speak to the superviser; the superviser told me the travel for work definitely wouldn?t be covered (at all times it was made clear to me thatI could take out an add on at additional charge) .. so I repeated the stuff about the wording of the policy ? she went off, presumably to speak to her superviser and lo, she came back and said yes, I would be covered. So basically they were trying to sell me an extra policy I didn?t need and the only reason they finally agreed I didn?t need it was because I was bloody tenacious.

moshi - how?s the ankle?

drNo how did ds?s love letter thing go? How old is he? Also Grin at the non-technical t-shirt. When I first started running I didn?t even use a sports bra, let alone technical t-shirts.

a few things on the wonderful study.jobs/carees stuff:

sticky - well done on getting an interview ? and good luck.

sfx are you working already in that area? Is the degree part of a plan to go into management?

running - how fantastic to be doing medicine. I have such massive respect for doctors ? most of us can fck up in our jobs and, tbh, it rarely really matters. But doctors? I?m in awe. Do you mind me asking how old you?ll be when you qualify ? I?m always in interested in career-changers (as a potential one myself ? see below). also, I agree with sfx ? you?ll be fine with the juggling. When you juggle kids and their non-flexible timetables you rarely have choices ? so you just get on and do it. If you have to finish study at 3pm you just make damn sure you get it all done. It?s not like juggling study and a social life like a youngster.

Fanny ? no way is it too late. I had a lightbulb moment when a friend of mine who is considering pyschology (having already had a brilliant career in law) said ?well, if I qualify by the time I?m 45 I?ll still have 20 or more years at it? - less time than it took her to make partner as a lawyer. I just thought, wow. She?s right. Funding is, obviously, a biggy ? but look into it ? you might be surprised what you can dig out.

I?m due to start law school in January. My job (policy adviser in a legal-ish type organisation) was very london-centric and when I went freelance we were able to move out of London ? it was meant to be temporary but we decided not to go back. I find freelancing hard (and there?s nothing else I can do round here) so I?ve decided to bite the bullet and turn myself into a lawyer? qualified by 45 ? 20-odd years of work Wink.

Running ? an embarrassingly short part of my post ? but I really have to rush now. Just went for a quicky today ? twice up the really steep hill right outside our door ? off for a long one tomorrow ? 12 miles. My speed and hill training is definitely paying off ? I?ve done 3 pbs in the last 10 days.

Now I need to get off the computer and make it look like I?ve been productive whilst dh did the 1 hour round trip to pick up dds Blush see you soon ladies ? and good uck to this weekend?s racers

rhetorician · 26/11/2011 14:38

way things are going hat anyone working in public sector would have 25+ years ahead at 45...I genuinely think that it can be hard to maintain momentum if you end up doing the same job for 40 odd years (I speak as someone in the midst of serious mid-career drift/doldrums)

RunningAllDay · 26/11/2011 16:49

Hi hat - thanks for your support!! Not quite there yet - I have to get an interview and make it through and be offered a place first - but the odds are significantly better than 2 months ago. I'll be finished with full time study by 40, then qualified as a GP (if I go that route) by 45. Hmm Like you - not exactly young, but since I don't expect to retire til I'm at least 85, given the rapid retreat of the pension age, still plenty of work they can extract out of me yet! Grin Very very good luck with starting law school - at university, IIRC, the medics drank a lot more worked significantly less hard than the lawyers! So good on you, and all the best. Agree with rhet - I struggled with 10 years in one career; def couldn't do 40. But I appreciate I'm lucky to have to choice.

Thanks everyone for good wishes tomorrow - and good luck to me fellow ravers ibby jez sonic and squix. I crashed my toe into the coffee table - not raving - just gigantic feet - and terminally clumsy - and it is all swollen up and very sore. But it won't stop me for tomorrow - what else are painkillers for...

(PS Checklist: no redheads, yes 2 girls, yes social conscience, yes to speaking out - I have confronted two pickpockets in my time, no to being short - 5'8, and yes yes yes to hating housework - life is TOOOOO short!)

orangeLFDThead · 26/11/2011 17:11

Hi, not been on for a few days and tried to catch up the best I can so apologies if I have missed anything major.
Drno sorry to hear about your dn but glad she improving. Ds1 had pnuemnia when he was 5, quite a scarey experience but he ok now. Glad the garmin survived too.
peach hope things improve soon. My two had dummies too. I was actually very against dummies. But both my just wanted to use me as comfort and with ds1 I was so sore and bleeding nipples if it was no for the dummies I am not sure I could of carried on bf. Thankfully both of them just after they turned one took them out put them on the table and toddled off and never asked for them again Shock. I also use to do the same as ibby nappy change half way through feed if they getting sleepy would wake them up enough to have a good go at seconds. Hope you get some good rest tonight.
Congratulations badger, I agree about the running club not really the time to push yourself which I think would be hard not to do. Hope everything ok keeping fx for you. Sorry about your dh.
Good luckibby, running, squix, jez and sonic

Checklist time:

  • lots of them have red hair or red haired children - No, but ds2 was strawberry blonde when a baby but now just blonde.
  • lots of them have girl children - No, 2 boys
  • they all have a social conscience - Yes
  • they are not scared of speaking their minds especially to random strangers up to no good - Would always like to but very shy
  • they are generally averse to ironing and most housework - No
  • generally short - yes 5.2
Bonkers same thing happen to me and dh last month. We both took a day off work to have child free romantic baby making day. A couple of days before got a long waited hospital appointment for ds2 for that afternoon. So we thought ok we will have romantic morning instead and then ds1 got eye infection and had to have the day off school. Hope Thursday goes well for you. Portion control is my problem too. Did parkrun this morning and got pb 30.11 (previous 30.24) but still not sub 30. But I did have to stop to take my top off (had one underneath) then got headphones tangled which easily lost me 30 secs. Sorry for mammoth
DrNortherner · 26/11/2011 18:42

hat ds is 9. He didn't giver her the love letter in the end - didn't feel the time was right, bless him. Though today he has been an argumentative little so and so, as has dh. You ever have one of those days where you could fall out with your own shadow? That's me today.

Bath. TV. Bed.

Good luck to all the racers, am out all day tomorrow visiting my Mum but will check in on you all. Post results on FB if you can Smile

rhetorician · 26/11/2011 18:50

I think I am having one of those days too drNo - had to apologise to DD for being grumpy...

YeahThatsTheBadger · 26/11/2011 19:27

Following fannys request to post times, just under 5k in 27mins. It was on a treadmill but I did find it mentally easier today. I normally really struggle to keep going. There was some good people watching to be done though!

Sounds exciting running. Good luck with it all.

fannybanjo · 26/11/2011 19:41

Good evening rubbers. Good luck tomorrow to ibby running squix and jezabelle* - Moshi you're not doing it are you?

DrNo have a "good" time at your mum's tomorrow. Hope it is as easy as possible for you. YY to child who is on the verge of being sold to Gypsies. DD1 been a pain the arse as I have had my friend stay over with her two DC.

rhet hope all is well with DP. I remember going into labour on a Saturday night with DD1, watched Popstars the Rivals. Time hasn't bloody moved on, we still have shite singing competitions on. I have a feeling your DP will have the baby this week. You decided on a name yet?

cherry wedding dress sounds lovely, excuse my ignorance as I may have missed it, when are you getting married?

monkey double Shred - respect mate! I've only recovered from the first session! DD2 loves it, I have a brilliant little video of her doing it in the study. She told my friend that "Mummy looked beautiful doing her exercises"! Kids are the best aren't they.

sticky I think I will be going for the GNR membership etc, I doubt I have left it too late, do you think I have? Only got the email on Wednesday.

Moshi hope the ankle is better and you aren't too stressed with DH leaving this weekend.

Had lovely couple of days with girls on my own, however how people cope as a single parent I just don't know. It is hard being the only person to see to everything. DH back tomorrow thank God. Bring on going away with my friend.

fannybanjo · 26/11/2011 19:46

well done orange on your parkrun PB! You will get your sub 30. How many people go to yours?

futurity great work with your tempo. Feels good when you have achieved it.

Badger Treadmill is Satan's version of running. Well done on getting through it and great time too! I have no idea how Moshi does multiple miles on this G Trainer thing.

OP posts:
rhetorician · 26/11/2011 19:52

fanny we have a name, but dd declared herself utterly opposed to it. Tough shit, it's not up to her...I think our families will not like it. Hey ho. They're not the people who will have to yell it 10, 000 times a day, are they?

I hope it's this week really - I think otherwise there's a distinct danger that they will push her to go for induction - on account of her age (she's 42) even though she's had a perfectly healthy pregnancy and a 4 hour unmedicated labour last time. And we really don't want that. OTOH, one wouldn't want to take any kind of risk.

I just emailed my head of dept to clear any buggering off I might have to do - I'm in a strange position because I have no entitlement to any leave - I offered to take unpaid leave, but to her credit she rejected this idea. It's been preying on my mind a little (it wasn't term time when dd1 was born).

I did a very windy 6 miles in just over an hour, so was pleased with that. Will try and do a long run tomorrow as it might be a while before I can again.

orangeLFDThead · 26/11/2011 19:54

Ah thats sweet of your dd fanny. Regarding parkrun there was 332 this week and I came 262 and 63rd women

orangeLFDThead · 26/11/2011 19:57

Rhet my mum hated ds1 name and took her ages to get used to it. But now she could not imagine him being called anything else. Like you say its up to you and dp and tough what anyone else thinks. Thats good about your boss. One less thing to worry about.

fannybanjo · 26/11/2011 20:13

My 2 year old DD would call a baby Camel or Squirrel if given the choice so I wouldn't worry too much about DD rhet. As long as you and DP love the name, that is all that matters. Once a name is attached to a baby, people tend to say sod all but when pregnant, they air their views far more. I learned by the time I was pregnant with DD3 to keep names to myself. DD3 should have been Claudia and after her informing me this week that she wants to be a boy Grin, Claudia aka Claude would have been a good choice! Strangely though, although I love my daughters names, I sometimes wish I had chosen VERY classic names such as Elisabeth, Anna or Louisa. (two of those names are middle names for DD1 and DD3). They do all have classic names though but quite popular in the past decade.

well done orange - I am definitely going to do parkrun on Sunday in Liverpool. By the way, how is your DB?
