FWIW on other watches - my dh has a suunto but it is much more fiddlier than the garmin. I used to have a footpod garmin and it over read distance dramatically. It was worse the further you went. So i would recommend a gps now i have one I think although still getting used to it....

Is that right it is current pace when you are running ? I thought it showed average pace when running but I understood that from here so possible I misread. I do find it different to the footpod - takes longer to react to change in pace which is also why I thought it showed average. But happy to be corrected.

DebiTheScot · 15/11/2011 23:18

Oh my goodness. I've just spent nearly 3 hours marking exam papers. One kid got 1/30!!! Another got 2/30! It's a good job about 6 (out of 40) got more than half marks (they're sets 3 & 4 so wouldn't expect them to be amazing) or I would have been tempted to stay in bed tomorrow.
Seriously how can you get 1/30 on an exam that included 4 questions with a 50:50 chance???

And I've probably missed out on an evening's entertainment with you lot Sad

bonkersLFDT20 · 16/11/2011 06:29

rhet 2000K this year! That's very, very impressive. Well done.

Moshi It's not BF but pregnancy which sucks the life out of breasts I think. Blame your DH, NOT the kids!

Debi Are you a Secondary school teacher?

AngeChica · 16/11/2011 07:43

Sticky have you seen this. The new "Marathon of the North"? Now there's a challenge for you!

It's bit soon after the VLM for me I fear - but good to see that more big events are appearing on the calendar in the north!

There is also this series which is new-ish as well: I have already entered the HM & would be interested in the 3 10ks as well, all at scenic National trust locations in Northumberland.

SonicMiddleAge · 16/11/2011 08:02

My arms hurt. Did a training session yesterday which involved repeatedly running up a hill, doing increasing pyramid sets of punches, running back down, increasing sets of push ups. Fitness trainers are evil.

Hatwoman I'd go linen skirt or trousers, with fitted top or twin set. Would also caution that even when it's hot out meeting rooms can have brutal air con..

sfxmum · 16/11/2011 09:42

rhet impressive
debi that sounds dispiriting

Will try and fit in a run today or make friends with Gillian which ever I can fit

RunningAllDay · 16/11/2011 10:08

I am keeping up with reading your chat but so behind on posting that I won't even try. But lovely to see all the pics you have posted, and well done rhet on your incredible total.

Re watches, Wheely I am also still getting used to my new Garmin (I got a 610 - to make up for my complete lack of other gadgets) - and 'lap pace' is the predicted time it will take you to complete your current lap. So it is not quite your current pace as it includes your average pace for the bit of lap you have already done. So obviously, it is closer to your actual pace the less of you current lap that you have currently completed.

And as for programming a pace (was it sticky?), you can use the Virtual Partner function on the 610 (I don't know about the other models) which alerts you if you are dropping behind a certain average pace. The reason I got the 610 rather than the 410 was becuse it had all the whizzy functionality but is much smaller for bird wrists - only a little bigger than a standard watch.

Can't say enough for the speed training (thanks for the bossy talk fanny) - have cut my LSR average by 15secs this week to 9:30 over 14 miles, and just managed a tempo run at 8:43 over 5 miles which I would never have managed before reading this thread. You're all inspirational Smile

backwardpossom · 16/11/2011 11:16

Hill training at running club last night - a lot harder in my new group, but very good :)

Not really running related, but I have been looking for a cross-training workout I could do on the days in between my runs. So I ordered 30 Day Shred from Amazon and I just did the level 1 session. Before I did it, I thought a couple of thoughts - 1) would the first level work out be hard enough for me, as I'm pretty fit anyway, and 2) will the lightest weights I have be heavy enough, maybe I should use the medium size weights...

But then I thought, just do level 1 and use the lightest weights the first time... Thank goodness I did! Holy crap... I really enjoyed it, but it was so hard - I'm going to have mega sore arms tomorrow.

stickyLFDTfingers · 16/11/2011 11:29

aha - I like the sound of this "virtual partner". I had a look on amazon and have changed my wish to a 405cx. Not so expensive as the 610 (Envy runningallday!), £139.99 so not all that much more than the 205. rhet's experience and thoughts here made me think a HRM might not be such a bad idea too, given I seem to hold back way too much. Ooh, come on Santa!!

runningallday that's an impressive improvement, very speedy :)

backward it is good isn't it? Glad I got it. I do feel fine today, tho, just slight tightness in my calves this morning. Roll on the fit and toned new us!

Speaking of which, better stop sitting here in my kit and actually do something. Happy running everyone!

orangeLFDThead · 16/11/2011 11:39

Just done 8 miles and it went really well. It felt alot stronger run than last week which I upped from 6 to 7 miles. I didn't even have any major LFDT moment. There was an unexpected hill at mile 5, funnily enough on the race there is a apparently a hill on mile 5 (then another on mile 8 but I won't think about that now) and I dealt with the hill fine although running down it was bliss. Also I did it quicker than expected last week I did 7 miles in 1hr 15 mins so I expected to do 8 in bout 1hr 25-26 mins but did it in 1hr 23 mins. Feel like I'm on a high and feeling alot more confident about the race now.
Sorry for the me post.

MoshiMoshi · 16/11/2011 11:47

Good stuff orange! Bear in mind hills change gait. Uphill encourages forefoot running and downhill encourages heel striking. You may find one easier than the other for those reasons and / or because downhill is bliss after a difficult hill!

DrNortherner · 16/11/2011 11:55

Just trying to catch up whilst taking part in uninteresting webinar. Bloomin job gets in the way of my Mnetting Grin

rhet your mileage is awesome, really it is.

fanny if you can do 5 miles at 7.45m/m you will so whoop my arse in Blackpool, that pace is beyond me. And you are joing a club ? you will be not far off Moshi pace before long!

Re bras its shock absorber all the way for me too. I have 2, 1 is quite old but still in great condition. I am only 32B but have absolutely no movement going on when strapped into mine.

I did Tempo running at club last night and can declare it is my LEAST favourite discipline.

I got chatting to a newbie at running club last night, as we were doing Tempos I always stop my Garmin at the end of each effort other wise it knackers up my average pace and this newbie woman looked at me like I was mad and said ?Do you ever stop touching your watch?? [schock]

backwardpossom · 16/11/2011 12:01

but but but I like touching my watch!

fannybanjo · 16/11/2011 12:12

stickyy friend just got her Garmin and used it for the first time today with heart rate monitor. She was very upset as we did a 6 mile run with nearly 500ft of climb, average pace 8.40 and Garmin informed her she'd only burned off 370 calories!! Mine said 597 so hers must be more accurate as its gone by her heart rate. rhet how does that work?

orange bloody well done girl. Great training run, that'll be the one which will boost you on the day.

running again, excellent! Sounds like you're really flying. Glad the speed sessions helping. Once you notice the difference, it spurs you on.

Debi bloody hell, that's awful, how can they be so dim? Sad

Just done a killer hill, in 1.2 miles climbed nearly 400 feet. Run was 6 miles in total. I tell ya, I'm loving these hills, we didn't stop once, it was bloody hard work. I think the fells may be the next thing for me, they do a lot of them in the running club.

Moshi hope you're feeling ok today.

fannybanjo · 16/11/2011 12:22

DrNo hey, there is 4 months until Blackpool, believe me, you will come a LONG way in 4 months. Remember, I only came on this thread not too long ago and the wealth of advice I have had from everyone has brought me along so much. Haha re Garmin, I ALWAYS stop mine if I am doing different sections of speed work otherwise I wouldn't know my true pace. Tell the newbie to STFU. Wink

hill run today for anyone who is interested. The last few feet were like a cliff, we only stopped when we got to the top and turned around. Felt like Mount Everest! Chuffed with myself. Grin

rhetorician · 16/11/2011 12:42

fanny don't know - I think calorie counts are not very reliable - but perhaps her actual heart rate was lower so it assumes less effort? have you put your vital statistics into yours? if not, it is assuming that you are a great big hairy man with calorie consumption to match...

OP posts:
sfxmum · 16/11/2011 12:49

looking at those stats makes me want a Garmin for geekyness alone lovely graphs[blushGrin

ibbydibby · 16/11/2011 12:49

Help can't keep up.

In brief:

Shock Absorber all the way

Garmin every time

Too much work and stuff to do to keep up properly. Rhet, saw an ad the other day about a running thing from a sport shop in Dublin. Think they wanted some folk to try out new equipment on an organised run. Or summat. Sorry bit vague, will try to dig out link if you are interested.

Oh, and running. PB at parkrun on Saturday, finally dived under 24min. (ie did it in 23.59). 2 mile time trial on Tues evening at running club. HM looming in 11 days, eek. Moshi are we going to try to meet there? Are you still doing it?

stickyLFDTfingers · 16/11/2011 13:01

hi again (I should put the computer in the cupboard, I'm on here faaar too much just lately!)

orange good work mate, you are doing so well! The more time on your feet the easier it is (and, ime, the more you really look forward to the long run sessions). Meal worm here you come :)

I love the "friendly rivalry" between fanny and DrNo - "you're great", "no, you're better" - bet on the day there'll be a friendly grin, then head down, teeth gritted and you'll both be running like bats out of hell! Just how it should be Grin

Very happy! My splits this time were: 9'18"/mi, 9'10"/mi, 10'53"/mi, 8'57"/mi, 10'27"/mi. Which is a lot better than last week :)

stickyLFDTfingers · 16/11/2011 13:04

PS I know the 9:18 (easy warm up), 9:10 (hard) looks a bit weird: it's because there's a good downhill section to get out from Durham into the country, and also it was cold so I was wanting to warm up quickly!

Wheelybug · 16/11/2011 13:31

Hi all. Some great running here - everyone is getting faster or running longer ! We are all officially great. Well done on the parkrun pb ibby.

Runningallday - thanks for that re the pace of the garmin . Am finding it a bit odd as the other day I was running at my normal ish pace and it was telling me I was running about 2 mins a mile slower than i would have been and took a long time to adjust. Just need to get used to it I guess.

Back from a morning at the gym/pool but feeling despondent. Treadmill intervals went fine, didn't push the speed too much as was first intervals since august. My mum phoned me in the middle though which wasn't ideal !!

Then into the pool for my swimming lesson. The group has grown since half term and I also think the teacher has lost a bit of interest as she's off for a knee op for the rest of the term. Anyhow , she seems to spend a lot of time talking to other people in the pool and not watching what we're doing. She set us off in what she perceived to be speed order and I was 4th out of 5 which would be fine except I kept having to tread water because I kept catching the person up in front, until The two people in front of me sent me off first. Was v frustrating. I may give notice and finish at the end of term, work on things myself and then have some private lessons in time. The problem is, it's the technique I need help with, my speed is fine. Sigh. Grump. But no point doing it if it makes me feel fed up and Moany (I can do that for free!)

Right, need to get changed and get out again to meet a friend for coffee before my
Weds evening madness- picking up 8 kids from school, bringing 6 of them home to change and snack then back for dance club.... It's v. Noisy !!

orangeLFDThead · 16/11/2011 13:36

Not thought of it changing your gait Moshi, alway feel like I'm flying coming down hills. But also bliss as relief as so hard going up the hill.
Well done on the hill Fanny if in doubt always go for the higher calories as least you will feel betterGrin.
Well done ibbydibby for new pb, thats a brilliant time. I always find it really hard to keep up too. I love this thread and it really motivates me and without it I don't think I would of entered stockport 10 but I'm such a slow reader, I'm dyslexic and I think it takes me at least 3 times longer than most people well at least dh to read just a few sentences. Oh well perhaps it may eventualy help improve my reading speed Smile

MoshiMoshi · 16/11/2011 15:00

ibby - annoyingly, it looks as if I can't do it. There is too much going on and it will be DH's last weekend so I have to be in London!

fannybanjo · 16/11/2011 16:32

ibby well done in your park run PB. I Intend to get a few park runs under my belt in December. You looking forward to your half next week? Shame Moshi can't do it.

orange well I for one think you do bloody brilliant considering you're dyslexic, you'd never know. God help you though when you're reading my posts. Grin Moshi is right about the gait, I was practically on my tip toes on the hill before. It's tiring when you're used to being a heel strike runner like I am. I was reading a bit of Born to Run online yesterday, has anyone read it? Very interesting re trainers and injuries.

I desperately need a big chunky casual coat for when I'm watching DD doing cross country, taking kids park etc. DH not listening to me - he thinks my size 12 ten year old North Face is ok - I could fit me and the kids in it. Anyone recommend a good warm, waterproof with hood but glamorous coat?! Wink

rhetorician · 16/11/2011 16:51

I did it!! It was a good run, too, despite a lot of it being on the road - cool, drizzly, managed to keep goodish pace at fairly low HR. Felt great at the end, and sprinted the last 500m - think some of the students were a bit surprised to see a 45 year old racing past them (they all think I'm virtually in the grave) :o

I am thrilled with myself - and thanks to all of you crazy people who kept me going when I might have given up (take a bow, everyone!) - now I need tea and something nice to eat - have to lecture later...
