rhet don't worry too much about your Mum. In the end she is her own person and has to take responsibility to sort herself out. I might sound a bit hard, but it's hard-won wisdom. Family might be important, but not at the expense of your sanity. You and DP, DD and DD2B are the important ones atm, if she can't respect that, well, she's going to have to learn to. Not your Problem.

Squix well done you, great race report. Running with your sister sounds lovely, and well done your Dad too - what a family!

Peach you'll be back at it soon enough! And I like this "feeling a bit tired after half term" - you are allowed to feel (extremely) tired at the late stage of pregnancy you're at. Blimey woman, we might be running for a bit of a day - you're weight lifting the whole day! Take it easy, not too much rushing about now Wink

I am so hungry and ruddy DP hasn't got himself ruddy home yet. I think he's got 10 minutes before he's getting his own dins (if there's anything left)...

monkeywench · 31/10/2011 20:37

sticky I'm home alone tonight ...... Spoooooooky!

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 31/10/2011 21:43

just to say, thanks for the LFDI vibes, probably one of my fastest runs for a while - 3 miles in 34 mins.

I was nearly home and congratualting myself mentally on the run thinking I had chosen a nice safe route, when I realised that I was running alongside ....

A HUGE FRICKIN' CEMETERY!!!

Somewhat spooky on halloween, but I was more nervous about the fact that my 13 year old self would have found it hilarious to hide in there on halloween and leap out on unsuspecting runners. Glad to say the 13 year olds round here are clearly not so devious, but the bit past the cemetery was shall we say Usain Bolt esque.

MoshiMoshi · 31/10/2011 22:20

Well done, Cherry! And welcome back vicar. Hope you stick around. We are a friendly bunch and there are some seriously dedicated runners here!

Wheelybug · 31/10/2011 22:50

Well done Cherry ! LOL at the cemetery - you'd probably not normally notice it.

T or T a biggish thing round here too. We got through 2 big bags of lollies. DD1 went out with friends (and a parent) and DD2 had a lot of fun giving out the lollies and eating them herself of course. DD1 got a huge haul. I am eyeing up the mini curly wurlies but know she counted them before she went to bed Angry.

rhetorician · 01/11/2011 10:02

lovely day here - so going to bus it to work (can do some prep on the bus) and run home...it will be getting dark when I'm near home, so am taking hi-vis bike vest and lights...

potty training mostly seems to consist of DD playing potty and knicker games with her toys Hmm, but thankfully, thank the lord, we have no visitors.

And...for the first time since 1999, DP and I (and now our family) will wake up on our own in our own house on Christmas morning Grin. She did say grumpily (my mother, that is!) that she wouldn't bother sending presents (even for DD1 Shock) 'because they get too much'. We are actually very sparing about the stuff we buy and most of it has come from other people. So she is pissed off - even though it was her decision.

Am about to sign up for Dec 3 Jingle Bells 5k, with the proviso that it's entirely possible that I won't run it...

Moshi meant to say that I have no advice for you re: DS not having school-age children myself, but, having been a very academic child myself in a not very academic environment, I'd say that the social thing is very important. Could you put him in school, but make sure he is stretched outside of it - as sticky says, there's UC Berkeley and many of those kids will be doing other things outside school. He could learn a new language (Mandarin, perhaps, given SF's big Chinese community?), or find some maths/science stuff outside school if that's what interests him. I don't think you necessarily need to do it - but IMVHO deliberately isolating him from his peers might not be the best plan - you can provide academic stimulation outside school, but the peer group is irreplaceable. I can also see how very very difficult this is, particularly for a boy of his age and stage.

sfxmum · 01/11/2011 10:18

hello all quick read of thread

Rhet result! guessing you will get over the disappointment of lack of presents Grin
and regarding potty training, like most things to do with children they do it on their own time and they also pick up in the general mood and act on it like only little people can, we had a fair few false starts and general accidents, but when she was ready it was almost instant, followed day time with overnight dryness in a matter of days

cherry well done on finding the will, here we have cemeteries all around, in fact as far as I recall we have always lived near cemeteries Hmm

wave to vicar

peach you will get back to running in no time, just as soon as the zombie phase is done Wink you will be so glad to get out and resume running that you want care about what you are wearing

moshi interesting info on training. hope home stuff is not stressing you too much and you are finding time for yourself

we had a mad Halloween evening dh went out escorting a gaggle of little girls, he returned home somewhat frazzled, and they have enough sweets to last them until Christmas at the very least

running a bit later, drizzly warmish here which I sort of like

sfxmum · 01/11/2011 10:20

I am also looking for a local festive 5-10K for both of us really we need the incentive

MoshiMoshi · 01/11/2011 10:40

sfx - I am looking to do a 10K in December so perhaps we can find a local one to do together? 5K and 10K training starts in earnest next week. More pootling today with 6M easy with dog. Lovely.

Thoughts much appreciated on the school dilemma rhet et al. Am mulling everything over. Liking the idea of home schooling initially but need to feel I can handle it.... Hmm

rhetorician · 01/11/2011 10:46

home schooling might work, too - it's quite a popular option in the US (although it has a fair share of cranks and creationists...) so I imagine you'd be able to find some good support - it might be a good way for you to put down roots and make connections too. Would you be home schooling all the kids, or just DS?

Now, I need to turn the house upsidedown looking find my running rucksack...

peachsmuggler · 01/11/2011 10:51

Rhet, at least it gives your mum something to complain about, sounds like she wouldn't be happy otherwise!! Wink, re. Jingle bells run, will you be dressing as santa's little helper??? All this talk of Xmas themed races makes me feel quite festive! I want to run about with antlers on my head too!!! Perhaps I will...

Oooh spooky cemetery run cherry, you are most brave!

Right ladies,(look away pan) need some advice on best time pre-labour to do the lady gardening. Was going to do it today but can't seem to muster the energy. I think I will find it easier to be erm..bare.. What with possible stitches and all the giant maternity pad wearing antics, but don't want to do it too early in terms of regrowth. I should
add I am going to do this myself with cream. I have never had a bikini wax and don't intend to start now. I know they have seen it all before but really can't bear the thought. Any advice gratefully received!!

fannybanjo · 01/11/2011 10:57

peach if you'd have known me on here 2.7 years ago, my labour thread was comical re my bushette looking like a hedgehog with alopecia Grin. I attacked mine with nail scissors the night before I went into labour and after DD3 was born, it looked like roadkill. DH pissed his pants. You see, mine's not curly, I'm abnormal, it grows like a wizard's beard. Sooooo, my advice is go to the professionals and get it all waxed off. I did Veet a few weeks ago but that's a whole other story....

rhet your mum sounds like a spoiled 6 year old. Best thing to do is suit yourselves and ignore her tantrums.

fannybanjo · 01/11/2011 11:01
peachsmuggler · 01/11/2011 11:04

fanny, you have straight pubes???? Seriously? How strange. No no no I cannot see a professional, the hideous piles would make the whole thing tooooo embarassing. Honestly, it takes me weeks to psyche myself up to a head haircut, it's just impossible!!!

fannybanjo · 01/11/2011 11:07

peach I'm very fair and they're poker straight. So they point downwards if they grow too young and get tatty. GrinWink I can tong them to make them look afro like though.

I fear the above revelation is a step too far and pan is currently throwing up his cornflakes.

fannybanjo · 01/11/2011 11:08

Grow too long. Hate typing on iPhone.

monkeywench · 01/11/2011 11:08

I fancy a festive run! I think there's one in Hemel I might do, not exactly scenic but with a sprinkle of Christmas magic who knows?!

peach - the only advice I can offer is not to be too ambitious! I don't use the cream but have in the past, just be careful as it's very effective and you can end up a bit barer than you intended! I would use cream very carefully um round the edges, then trim anything else. I would say the cream will last a good 4-5 days. You can re-do after that if you want. I did some fairly radical topiary the last two times due to the experience of having a c's with ds1 and being attacked by a midwife with a blunt razor, otherwise I would agree that yes they've seen it all before!

monkeywench · 01/11/2011 11:17

fanny you should have just done a centre parting and some plaits, would've been better than roadkill Smile. I wouldn't personally have a wax unless you've done it before, just in case you get the plucked chicken look/ingrown hairs!

Straight pubes - have heard of that - friend of mine runs a laser hair removal place and has seen all sorts! Not sure she's seen a wizards beard before though will have to ask! Sadly I'm too fair and not hairy enough to have laser hair removal otherwise I'd get mates rates!

peachsmuggler · 01/11/2011 11:20

Hmm monkey, I don't thinkni can get at it to trim iyswim, though I can stand in front of mirror while slapping on the veet. I think you're right. Do now and re-do as necessary.

fanny, have you ever seen Billy Connolly do that bit about it being just as well that pubes know when to stop growing so we don't have to comb them like a luxuriant pelt? He has obviously not met you!!!

PILS have had to cancel their trip to Thailand tomorrow due to the floods. Is a real shame but they are getting all their money back so can go another time. Also means MIL coming here as soon as my DSIS leaves (few days after due date), so as long as DD2 doesn't arrive early, we'll have someone here to look after DD1 while I'm worrying about my undergrowth in labour (selfish got emoticon)

peachsmuggler · 01/11/2011 11:21

That would be git, not got.

fannybanjo · 01/11/2011 11:27

peach I've not heard of that from Billy Connolly but I've seen him live and had I known, I could have grown it for a year and shown him. Grin. Yes, it's similar to a pelt. Like a fox tail. However I'm exaggerating obviously as I always keep the nail scissors handy. I've not got evidence that I could grow it past a centimetre.

monkeywench · 01/11/2011 12:25

I love Billy. I'm always insanely jealous of those "what celebs have you met" threads as it seems that every single living Scot has met him Envy. His luxuriant pelt routine is one of the classics along with many of my other faves.

.

stickylittlefingers · 01/11/2011 12:31

wow, you learn a lot off Mumsnet. I'm mentally renaming you FannyGandalf. It never ever crossed my mind to do anything re lady garden Peach. On the basis that (I think) all this topiary work is a fairly modern thing, and women have been having babies a while, I don't think you have to do anything more than usual? The idea of in-growers as well as all the usual soreness is a bit eye-watering.

Cherry love your "Thriller" run! I've always thought it'd be good to find a house by a cemetery: they don't bother me, and the house would probably be cheaper (plus very quiet neighbours.... I'd hope!).

I met some homeschoolers in the US when on a canoeing trip in Colorado. They explained they weren't happy with the grade schools, seemed pretty normal types. Though canoeing in the COlorado desert (we saw bears and eagles and everything!) is a pretty cool school trip. Beats going to Durham Heritage centre!

Just whiling away a half hour for my lunch to go down before heading out. Gorgeous day here too, I'm looking forward to it very much (but don't want to chunder, obviously, so I can contain my excitement for 20mins or so)

Pan · 01/11/2011 12:49

< I edit out stuff I don't want to read Smile>

Can I ask, what do we all think about, esp. on longer runs? I make shopping lists, try to recite stuff I have commited to memory, try to imaging how my body is looking as if my skin was transparent ( as a sort of body check system), and concentrate on trying to keep a relaxed shape/frame. FWIW.
