New thread everyone!

Rest for me today - just six days to go and I've woken with a sore throat .....

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 03/10/2011 21:39

Ok guys I have entered the ballot too. It's a long way from me but hey ho, chance of a life time right?! It's the first ballot I ever entered so the likelihood of me getting a place is slim Grin

backwardpossom · 03/10/2011 21:40

It's a REALLY long way from me, but I figure worry about the logistics of the thing if I get a place! Grin

peachsmuggler · 03/10/2011 22:01

I've entered the ballot too!!! That would be a massive incentive to get my distance up post bambina!!!

Oh Moshi, it is a really difficult one. IME men are not so brilliant at sucking it up when they are the ones doing the compromising, however that is maybe just the way it is. If you do decide to go, you dont need to pretend it is all rosy. Yes, you need to go with a positive attitude and in full support of DH, but you needn't pretend that you don't have concerns and worries. DH needs to support you, just as you are supporting him. It doesn't have to be wonderful and perfect straight away, but as long as you keep communicating how you feel to each other then this leaves less space for any resentment to arise. FWIW I think this could be a fantastic opportunity for you all, not just DH and you are an extremely capable woman, who will cope with the change and the move brilliantly. Like Master says, post on other threads to get other ex-pats words of experience. Smile

Hatwoman · 03/10/2011 23:02

blimey this thread moves fast. moshi - making big decisions is SO hard and you and dh wouldn't be human (well, wouldn't be normal, in imho) if you managed it without any differences. I still have panics about whether leaving London was the right thing for us. the truth? I'll never know - because (massive cliche warning, except I don;t mean it in the cliche sense) you only get one life. There's no counter-factual. I can agonise over whether it was right or I can get on with it and make the most of it. And I'm sure you will too.

must get to my bed. but came on her to publicly commit myself to my next challenge. I don't just want to do this race I want to do it well.

moshi - that was meant to say "whatever happens"

ibbydibby · 03/10/2011 23:09

Moshi I should be going to bed now but just wanted to echo what *Hatwoman" said. We left London 3 years ago, I had wanted to do so for years. However 3 years on I am still not sure that we did the right thing (various reasons) BUT I know if we hadn't done it then I would have spent several years thinking "what if.."

DCs (then 11 and 7) found it hard but 3 years on I can look back and see how they have come on from those early days. (Though I can see DS1 heading for London as soon as he is old enough!).

Do you have a deadline for the decision?

DebiTheScot · 04/10/2011 09:15

Wow hatwoman, that sounds like a very tough race. But I imagine the views (if it's a clear day) will be amazing and it'll be so exhilarating.

Pinkglow · 04/10/2011 09:37

I entered the Olympic run - slim chance but hey, you've got to be in it to win it. I love that the entry fee includes two seats in the stadium for friends and family.

Shin Splints however came back last night with a vengence. If I have to walk the whole way on my race on saturday then I will but other then that I'm out until I feel they are 110% better. Thinking of giving myself a cross training time table in order to keep the fitness up, give me something to focus on and to stop me getting upset over it.

Hatwoman · 04/10/2011 09:43

debi - I was planning to do it in 2010 but I wasn't very well so had to bin out. I did a similar one instead in autumn 2010 and swore blind I'd never do anything so daft again in my life. But the Edale Skyline has a particular pull for me - it was the first long fell race that I became aware of, in a "I wonder if I could ever..." type way. The timing makes it tough - training through the winter, hard to do recces, and the last couple of years there's still been snow on the ground in March. but I think I need to get it out of my system.

I expect I've posted this link before on the running thread so apologies for being boring

Hatwoman · 04/10/2011 09:58

sorry I've just been you-tubed.

it includes lots of women, lots of nice cheery bits and pieces and if you watch it to the end it has Shelf Moor on which was the race anifrangapani did.
orangehead · 04/10/2011 10:35

Hi, I have only managed to catch up to the end of the old thread will catch up on this thread tonight.
Well done to all the sunday racers, to those a bit disappointed about pb's running in that heat is hard work and you can't really compare to other racers or runs when not so hot. Saying that though you all got good times Smile and managed to do it in one piece. Must of been quite scarey seeing people collasping.
Oh Moshi sorry you both arguing, hope you get things sorted. (Sorry if been more developments on this thread, will read it later)
I'm in for losing a few pounds. I lost a stone last year, probably could of done with loing a stone and half in total but just seemed to hit a brick wall when I got to the stone. I have been eating alot of crap recently but think the running helping me not put the weight back on, so thats good. But think I need to get back to healthy eating.
I went out for intervals last night and felt awful again when I got back. So I have decided I am going to have a week rest. I have just not felt right the last few weeks have not enjoyed my runs, when I have ran I am just feeling drained for the rest of the day which is notusual for me. My foot has been twinging for quite a few weeks but not bad but now my knee and hip are not right. I feel it all connected and it all on the left side. It is'nt bad but it not getting better either. So I think a week rest and see, just wondering if I should go on the crosstrainer tomorrow or have a complete rest.

FairyBasslet · 04/10/2011 10:59

Struggling to keep up with this thread.

Moshi - I think you have to do it don't you or you'll have those 'what ifs' forever. I truly don't envy you taking the plunge though - once you've done it you'll be fine and won't look back I'm sure. One thing you need to do though is make sure everything is fully out in the open with your DH - a total frank discussion of fears, hopes, etc. We've often thought about going off to Canada as we love it there but I know if we were ever actually at decision point, I'd feel like you. Good luck with sorting it all out. San Fran is a superb city though. We took DS there when he was 9 months old (we did SF-LA-Vegas-Death Valley-Yosemite-SF brilliant trip!). He got his first tooth there and also started crawling there just before our 12 hour flight home Grin

To those who are in the midst of potty training hell, I sympathise. DD2 is 3 this month and is still not quite grasping the whole concept - very frustrating. DS and DD1 were out of nappies around the same age and it was very quick and easy if I remember correctly so goodness knows what's going on this time. I will just need to bite my lip and get on with it, though if I have to rinse out another pair of poo-stained pants I might scream! To cap it all, DD1 (5) has started having accidents at night, at least one a week, where before she was totally fine.

Losing weight? Yes, yes, definitely. I did WW after DD2 and got so far, just into my healthy range, then it all stopped and the scales started to go the wrong way. To my horror, in the last few weeks the weight just seems to be creeping on again. Going off to dig out all my WW stuff to sort out the eating side of the equation, as that's where the willpower is non-existent it's all going wrong.

FairyBasslet · 04/10/2011 11:17

Oh, meant to say, I've signed up for another half, though it's not until next April. There's one in November I'd quite like to do as it's local but I'm a bit wary as it's a new one and I think I could quite easily be last by a long way as I don't think it'll be a particularly big field. It'll be a fast course as it's 4 loops of an airfield, so I might die of boredom along the way but I do quite fancy giving the distance another go sooner rather than later... What would you do? There's a 5k and 10k at the same time, so I could cop out and just do the 10k. One thing about the weekend's race was that the camaraderie was brilliant. Runners who had just finished and were walking home were shouting encouragement - really provided such a boost to those of us plodding along at the back. If that's indicative of most half marathons then I wouldn't mind being last, I mean someone has to be last, don't they?

Official time for Sunday 2:42:15 - I'd hope I could bring that to about 2:30 on a cooler day though.

that was a marathon thread read Grin

Congrats Quenelle that's lovely news

Moshi such a lot of wise people here, I hope it's helping. It's not easy when you're a capable and "in charge" sort of person having your life dictated by someone else, always sits badly. Tis true, tho, that sometimes you just have to slide down the slide... I still wonder sometimes, what life would have been like had we stayed in Oxford (where I had a really good job :(), had we stayed in Dublin (fantastic pre-school, then great bi-lingual school (German/English) for the girls), but then I also wonder - should we move permanently to Germany... what-iffing is fine so long as you see it as a constant reassessment to possibly make things better rather than a negative mindset. If you do go, I guarantee you will be amazed at how well your DC do. As much as a new language makes them use parts of the brain they wouldn't use otherwise, so does adjusting to a new culture. It is a wonderful thing to watch! And the sports opportunities will be brilliant...

rhet As a plodder extraordinaire, I agree the only way to go faster is to, erm, go faster. No question intervals work, they're just really hard (whinges). I'm torn by the urge to go faster on teh one hand, against the knowledge that my plods have the most brilliant mental effect on me. Would seem silly to injure myself so as not to be able to plod, it's not like anyone's paying me to do 8 minute miles!! It's a conundrum Confused

ibby, debi and pinkglow hope your injuries clear quickly, can't have you getting too comfy on that bench (cushions indeed Grin)

hatwoman I am jealous of your fell running ability, that race looks amazing.

Fairy well done, it sounds like you've got the bug good and proper!! If I were you, I'd go for another half on the basis that it would be nice to see what your time was when it wasn't so hot (assuming we're not going to have any more heatwaves!!)

orange hope you feel better soon, does sound like all that's been happening has taken it's toll (unsurprisingly) - do take good care of yourself.

I'm still plodding, planning to do some intervals tomorrow, and some leg work this afternoon. I'm self diagnosing that the twinges I get in my left knee are due to my thighs not taking enough of the strain. So it's going to be lots of lunges for me.

drno - yep, it's been REALLY windy up here too. Oddly warm and windy. So I did 3 miles east (slow) and 3 miles west (really fast) yesterday. It would have improved my stats to have run 6 miles west and taken the bus back :)

fanny love the championship dog DVD present! Hope you all had a great weekend.

Pawsnclaws · 04/10/2011 12:51

Hello all, lovely day here - much cooler.

Feeling a lot better today so off for a short leisurely 4 miles tonight. Then just another 4 miles this week and I'm done.

Other than that - Day 3 of potty training ds3 and all good so far. No accidents, a couple of damp pants incidents but nothing drastic. He's one of those easily bribed dcs who is quite happy to sit on the potty and produce something if it gets him a jelly bean. It has to go horribly wrong yet, right?

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 04/10/2011 12:59

paws it might just be your DS3 has got it! Fingers crossed... Good to hear you're feeling better in yourself too.

rhetorician · 04/10/2011 13:23

about to run home from work; just realised though that I have no Garmin...this will be interesting.

Pawsnclaws · 04/10/2011 14:34

I hope so sticky, ds1 was very difficult, impossible to bribe, persuade or threaten (still is actually, he has an iron will), and ds2 was easy, so they're all quite different, aren't they?

Happy running all.

OP posts:
Hatwoman · 04/10/2011 15:06

ooo garmin withdrawal. I hate being without mine. I forgot it for my race on Sunday and it was awful. I kept having to ask strangers how far we'd gone (unmarked route)

backwardpossom · 04/10/2011 15:38

I too hate being without my Garmin - was gutted when the battery ran out just before my race on Sunday! But... I ran a PB, so maybe I'm better off without it? Confused

Got running club tonight. New block starts tonight, so it'll be fairly gentle. As we're getting towards the winter season, it'll be hill training and the like. My favourite... Grin Garmin currently charging! Wink

futurity · 04/10/2011 15:50

(gets twitchy at the thought of Garmin problems)...maybe I am addicted?!

Quenelle · 04/10/2011 16:01

Hi everybody. Thanks so much for the best wishes.

Futurity I just popped on to congratulate you on finishing Standalone. Your report made it sound pretty awful so well done.

And well done everyone else who raced over the weekend.

MoshiMoshi good luck with your decision. It must be really tough. One of my BFs is moving to the US for her husband's job next week and she really doesn't want to go. I'll certainly miss her.

fannybanjo · 04/10/2011 16:02

I shag with my Garmin on Grin just to see how fast I go....

Anyway about to embark on 8.5 miler. Will let you know if shagging is faster...
