New thread everyone!

Rest for me today - just six days to go and I've woken with a sore throat .....

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 07/10/2011 11:45

What an inspiring man. I wonder will they republish his book? Thanks for the link Hatwoman

futurity · 07/10/2011 11:51

Thanks for link Hatwoman - what a guy! Peat bogs sound like a scary hidden danger :(

runnerstipple · 07/10/2011 11:55

Orange hope your meeting with school went well and they came up with a robust response.

Cherry sending you virtual paracetemol and feeling better vibes.

Rhet, I can't believe your nursery's attitude, what would happen if you sent DD in in pants, with several changes of clothes, after all even when they are supposedly potty trained there are always accidents.

Had a good five miler this morning, hip hurt like crazy for first 5-10 minutes but then eased off and I felt I could run for miles (a most unusual feeling for me Grin), but I had to get back to do some work.

I wanted to say thanks to everyone on here, because reading this thread has really inspired me. I'm now eyeing up some races and waiting for entries to the Cambridge HM to open next week.

Good luck to everyone for this weekend if I don't get a chance to post again before then.

rhetorician · 07/10/2011 11:57

well they did say that they are well used to accidents; I think they would probably just put a nappy on her...

Hatwoman · 07/10/2011 11:59

I've just been reading a bit more and there are reports that he died - quickly - from a heart attack.

rhetorician · 07/10/2011 12:04

that's something, at least; I imagine that drowning in a bog would be a terrifying death

futurity · 07/10/2011 12:09

runnerstipple Where did you hear that entries for Cambridge open next week!? (jumps around excitedly!)

DrNortherner · 07/10/2011 12:11

Haven't caught up yet but thanks for the link *hat. What a guy, I hope he did have a heart attack and die quickly, suffering there alone simply does not bear thinking about.

Our coach at running club is a big fell runner, he didn't get into running till aged 40 he when he ran the london Marathon in 2:48. Then he moved towards the fells. He has completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in 3:34, was placed 7th V50 in The English Fell Championships, and has been the BOFRA V50 fell champion.

Fells are not for the faint hearted are they hat?

fannybanjo · 07/10/2011 13:29

Ladies now I thought I could chat but bloody hell, this thread is moving faster than Mo Farah.... Wink so quicky from me but will catch up properly later on.

rhet and everyone else who advised re gradients - thank you! However maths ain't my strong point so will just add hill to my memory bank as "BIG fuck off hill" and keep it at that! Rhet hope DD gets the potty training BUT do not worry too much, I was exactly the same with DD1, kind of wanting it done and dusted as felt like she was getting too old but they do it in their own time however Angry at your DD's nursery. How did you find the hills?!

paws How are you feeling about Sunday? If weather good may go and stand and cheer on so PM me your race number so I can look out for you!

orange your DS sounds gorgeous and in my eyes, bullies only target other children who make them feel inferior, whether it is because they are clever, attractive, well liked etc. I hope the school sorts it out.

Running.... ah yes, that's the little act that we do that made us post on this thread in the first place! I have done 15 miles this morning, 2hr 19m. The run started off awful (went with friend). I had a new fanny pack Grin with two water bottles and it was twisting around and causing all kinds of aggro so couldn't relax then phone starting ringing (important call had to take) then DH rang (re first important call) so was a bit of a stop start first 2 miles. Weather horrific too, rain and very windy. Anyway got into our stride, both put our headphones on and we went for it, majority of run was around 8.30m/m, the first three miles were what slowed our time however I think because we were slow at first we managed to really pace ourselves well. Final mile was pretty quick, we were practically sprinting last 200 metres! Climb of 800 feet too. Am aching all over but furthest I have ever ran and feel I am on my way to a marathon. Smile

bonkers20 · 07/10/2011 13:34

Cambridge Half info

DrNortherner · 07/10/2011 14:06

15 miles fanny Wow! Great time too. You have put me to shame. In order to try and sort out my niggly leg I have not run since running club on Tues, am planning 10 miles tomorrow with SIL.

rhetorician · 07/10/2011 14:11

fanny wow! I think my problem is that too much of my running is stop-start like that - when I run to work it's all the junctions/crossings, and when I'm out and about it's loo stops: I really need to work on this.

Hills were OK - I did 9 hill repeats - up a pretty steep one of about 250m, across and down. I almost got to the puking point at about no.6. My aerobic capacity is clearly absolutely shit. Then ran up the long hill (750m) and home. It was ok, but I've a long way to go :(

off to swings with dd (I fobbed her off yest with the excuse that the swings would be wet, she just said, 'but someone dried them now, remember?' My days are truly numbered)

futurity · 07/10/2011 14:11

Cheers for that link ...I have signed up for details but didn't get that newsletter? Bit worrying! Its on the calendar for entering next week Smile

FairyBasslet · 07/10/2011 14:57

Fanny that's brilliant. I am so inspired by hearing of all you ladies' times and distances. I aspire to run like that.

Went to the gym this morning and did some intervals on the treadmill, then some weights and a few lengths of the pool. I really struggle on the treadmill now, don't know why. I mean, I ran a half marathon on Sunday and today I could hardly manage a mile - what is that all about then? I just find running is this bizarre thing where I feel as if I will lose the ability to do it completely in the space of a couple of days.

Whilst I was in the gym, DD2 was in the creche, and in the space of an hour and a half she managed to wet her pants twice. So, Rhet, I share your frustration. To make matters worse, DD1 has reverted to wetting the bed and has done so three times this week - aaagggghhhh! I have this permanent smell of urine in my nostrils at the moment.

On the subject of the 'gay' bullying, I hope everything gets sorted out satisfactorily. I have heard from DS that some boy in his class had taken to calling others 'gaylord'. I don't think they actually really know what being gay is so I explained to DS and DD1 that sometimes girls like girls and boys like boys and that that is perfectly ok, so whoever is calling names is being very silly indeed and they should tell them that. Rhet - DH's cousin is gay and she and her partner have four children together, the older two both at school. We don't see them that often as they live 150 miles away, but I have wondered how their oldest two get on at school and if they've ever had any issues because they have two mums. I really hope not, but some people can be so ignorant.

Hmmm. School run time. Must go wake up DD2 who is sprawled out on the sofa after her swim.

fannybanjo · 07/10/2011 14:59

Thanks DrNo and Rhet - I too ate a large quantity of chocolate fingers yesterday! Grin. Got to be done sometimes!

rhet I am going to tell you off now. YOU did 9 hill repeats of 250 metres (then long one back) and you have a LONG way to go....?!!!! Woman - you're frigging awesome and STOP being negative about yourself and realise that you put 90% of the country to shame with the training you do! IF you were THAT bothered about running 8 min miles then I'm sure you do it and be very capable but do not think for one minute that because some people do quicker miles that they are "better" runners. You really need a dose of confidence cos you rock and you need to believe it. Smile

fannybanjo · 07/10/2011 15:05

Fairy crossed posts! Thank you and believe you me, this thread has helped turned me from a half hearted runner to
a fully fledged lunatic one!

encyclogirl · 07/10/2011 15:34

Hi everyone! Sorry to go AWOL. Thanks for asking about me and Rhet thanks for looking for me :)

Had to bail tbh, my dd as some of you know has Downs and ASD. We've just been through the week from Hell starting last Friday. She's thrashe her classroom twice, attacked her teacher her teaching assistant, other members of the faculty, her bus driver, her bus chaperone. Us. Everyone in her vicinity.

Her psych thinks shes simply testing out boundaries. Dh and I decided that now matter how severe your SN are you do NOT assault all and sundry. We literally spent the week dealing with this. Amazingly we have has some good results.

She has not attacked her brother all week, she has not thrashed any more rooms. She has not attacked me or her Dad.

She did attack the teacher and her speech therapist yesteday, but they calmed the situation.

I tell you what, if it wasn't for my running...

I've been out every other day, I joined a running club and it's going fab. I'm thinking of doing the Clonakilty 10k in Cork, Ireland on Dec 10th. Need to see how my dd is doing first though.

I haven't read anything (sorry!) I am so wiped by all this.

We are winning though, she is starting to 'unlearn' some of this current behaviour. I am reluctant to share our methods, but it does involve some serious consequences. No physical response from us, but we have found the best approach is to take her out of the situation and into a quiet room (alone) so that she can calm herself down.

So far this week we've marched her out of school 3 times.

Anyway, that's my sucky life right now. Thanks for thinking of me guys. I will catch up soon. We're away for the weekend and I hope to get a 6 mile in tomorrow.

encyclogirl · 07/10/2011 15:35

Sorry for typos!

Hatwoman · 07/10/2011 15:42

hi there encyclogirl - I'm a returning oldie and I don;t think we've "met" before. sorry to hear about your difficult week. your post is very enlightening for those of us who have no idea how hard things can be. dd (my dd that is) is hard work sometimes. we've had behaviour that tests both our (mine and dh's) relationship with her and with each other. but your post makes our issues seem very small. keep strong and keep up the good work. and keep up the running Grin

Hatwoman · 07/10/2011 15:43

that would have been better with a Smile. gentler than a Grin

sfxmum · 07/10/2011 15:56

encyclo sorry about your hard week sounds rough, is your dd a teen/ pre teen? I worked a lot with young adults moving from living with parents into independent living and boundary testing could be very testing, sounds like you are doing a stellar job. I often think it is that much harder wanting to protect a child who may be more vulnerable while at the same time needing to provide secure boundaries, blardy parenting is never easy

Hatwoman amazing guy, and has it has been said hopefully no great suffering was involved

I like hill walking but fell running seems well hard to me.

One 'sport' I would never try would be potholing, just looking at caves on telly makes hyperventilate, doing all that for sport makes me feel slightly queasy, actually just reading description of it is enough to go all funny

rhet I think mum meant too early for boy/girlfriends, I shall take the same view with dd by 20 should be early enough

Wheelybug · 07/10/2011 16:07

Thanks for more kind words - I really appreciate the supportive-ness of this thread. You're all fab Smile. However, Squix - after the way my knee felt last night (and that's knee on the other leg to injured ankle - aarrgh why is there always something) you may be carrying me around the GSR.

encyclo - what a terrible week for you (and am sure not just a week) -Am pleased the week has improved for you. Don't worry about catching up (unless you want to of course !)- its often hard enough without other issues going on .

orange and everryone else who has had similar problems - I hope things get sorted and your ds is ok. Sounds like those who have sadly had the same issues have given some great advice. Kids can be so cruel can't they ?

Hat - I read about that poor man yesterday. I too hope it was a heart attack and quick. The alternative cannot be imagined.

rhet - I am sticking my fingers in my ears re potty training Grin. I am trying to avoid even thinking about it and hoping for it'll all sort out this end. But well done for perseverence. Anotherone that can't believe the nursery aren't supportive - even both dds pre-schools were/will be proactive in helping and thats only for 3 hours a day.

Great hill work too ! And well done on the intervals fairy

fanny - 15 miles - wowee !! Fab. You are well on the way to a marathon (I just wrote marathong then - back to pants again....)

DrNo - so are you saying chocolate fingers are approved training food then ?

futurity hope the sniffles come to nothing.

I saw a big Irn Bru lorry today - down south and everything - and thought of all you tough scots wimmin Grin.

And hello to everyone i've missed.....

I managed a bit of a swim today although half the pool was out for aqua aerobics (grrr) so it was a bit like a scrum in the other half. 5-6 miles tomorrow am hopefully......

Wheelybug · 07/10/2011 16:10

And in case I don't get on over the weekend - really good luck to:

Pinkglow
Futurity
Cherry
June
RunningAllDay
and 'most definitely a runner' paws

Looking forward to the race reports !

June2009 · 07/10/2011 16:12

encyclo running is quite therapeutic isn't it, fingers cross you see sue improvement with your dd's behaviour, really sorry to hear how hard it can be, take care of yourself .

fanny good running, 15 miles :) How's the iron tablets working out for you?
You reminded me I meant to ask you guys what distance you sprint for at the end of a race?

I can't remember who I mentioned supplementing to now but yeah I was thinking multi-vitamins, iron, magnesium, zinc, fish oil, that type of thing. I also have a protein shake a day because I'm doing quite a lot of weight lifting at the moment.

moshi good luck with your move :D when is it all happening? I have been meaning to write a few time about it and then someone else came along and said what I was thinking anyway. I'm also an expat (french living in the uk now) and you just have to try it and see how it is going to work out for you, I agree that once there you have to make the effort to make it work and smile even when the times are rough because otherwise dh might think you're not supporting him...need to keep really open conversations with him where you agree to say what you think but also not get offended if you don't like what the other one said or is feeling. You can totally make it work and how exciting!!! the children will adapt very quick, even though it is always hard at the beginning meeting new people etc, especially when they are foreign and the culture is different. At least you all speak the same language right :D
Some friends of mine emigrated also for work (to north carolina) and although they miss their friends and family they have been there just over 2 years and they say they are loving it. (you should see their house! I would love it if I had that house) Grin

rhet I think I might start thing notes on how much I run per week/year. I used to use my car so little that a friend of mine, on being told I'd done 3000 miles in 3 years, replied "you could have walked that!!!" :)

teabreak over, back to work!

encyclogirl · 07/10/2011 16:20

Hi Hat Nice to meet you. The Grin was perfect by the way. It's Friday, we need to able to Grin just for surviving this week if nothing else!

sfx she's 15 and is transitioning from one school to another. The novelty seems to have worn off and she's decided to see what exactly she can get away with now.

Thanks to everyone else too for thinking of me. I'll be back on Sunday evening to post an update and hopefully catch up at last.

Enjoy the weekend runners Grin
