Good luck to those with race today, and sorry about the throat infection - I had a spate of them a couple of years back and it really dragged me down. Hope the ABs work!

I have a serious circuit training session scheduled with DH later this morning. I am feeling scared already.....

ibbydibby · 29/05/2011 10:45

Hello, can I join the thread please? Have just (on Friday) paid for VLM 2012 (had place this year but pulled out due to injury), and have also signed up for half marathon in November this year.

Just wondering if you have any tips on footwear please? I seem to have inherited "sticky up" big toes - my DM and DSis have the same - and have gone through the ends of 2 pairs of running shoes, both within 3 months of buying them. I ran the London Marathin in 2007, and trained alternating between 2 pairs of Saucony running shoes - so obviously put through a lot of mileage, wear and tear. However 4 years on both pairs of shoes, though no good for running, are intact, and good enough to plod around the garden. However I broke through the end of the Sauconys I bought in Nov 2010, in Feb this year. Bought a pair of Nikes in March, and have already gone through these. Anyone else have this, any ideas how to stop it happening/slow it down? Im trying hard to keep toenails short.

Same with socks. Bought 2 pairs of Fox River (or River Fox? necer remember which ) socks in 2006, and they last about 3 years with no holes. Bought a pair of Nike socks in March and have gone through these already....

Apologies for such a long post....

TheChewyToffeeMum · 29/05/2011 13:14

Hello ibbydibby, welcome to the thread.

Just a thought about the shoes - maybe you need to go a size bigger. I run in a full size bigger than my normal walking shoes. I sympathise with the socks as I tend to go through some of them pretty fast too. That said I have been using a pair of Xsport socks since 2005 and they are not worn at all!

N4NNY · 29/05/2011 13:40

so I have a TMI question does anyone have trouble with there bowels when running, I'm finding its getting things moving and even if i make sure i have been before i run I still have a strong urge to go while running, yesterday i only just made it home. Does this happen to lots of people please tell me it does

YeahThatsTheBadger · 29/05/2011 14:36

I'm spitter (sorry, a bit late to the conversation there) and am definitely not a northerner. Although I do try and spit when there's no one about.
Welcome n4nny and ibbydibby.

Driving sorry, it won't let me befriend you on fb. Am friends with DD, SW, DI and SG. My initials are LT.
Glad all the stress of last week is behind you and your dp now.

peachsmuggler · 29/05/2011 14:40

Welcome ibby, not sure what to suggest about the shoes except going up a size. Have you asked at the running shoe shop, maybe it is a problem they have come across before.

N4nny, yes absolutely, that's a common problem. I am normally ok if I go before but not always and sometimes have to cut short runs and come home or go to the toilets in the park. It might be worth experimenting with the types of food you eat before a run to see what helps?

How exciting Mrsweds! will eagerly await photos on FB. How sweet! Are you going to keep them all?

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 15:04

badger friended you instead, Don't know what to suggest about shoes, but N4nny yes - very common, highly irritating. I find it gets better when I run more often, or cut out caffeine before heading out.

actually looking forward to getting back to structured training next week - adding in some (gentle) speed work and seeing if that improves my paces. Just dragged myself out after working on the allotment - running feels easy enough, but I am dog tired (even after the good news I was too wired to sleep well - am a crappy sleeper at the best of times, but too old to get away with endless broken sleep. Training for december??)

It's hard to keep up with you all, the thread moves quick!
driving very happy for you :)

I'm going running later on today for 45 minutes to try my gear on in preparation for my 10K jog on Wednesday.

I want to do it under an hour. I find it hard to set the pace, when I did 10k last wednesday (in 65 mins) I felt like I could have gone faster/longer but not sure how much faster how early in the run, is there a general rule of thumb or just experience?
Do you use some kind of device to keep track of your speed in your runs? (or just look at your watch at the start ad finish??)

I just got my welcome pack and my number through the post, very excited :D
How do you pin the number which is on paper on your t-shirt? Safety pins??

Whoever asked where the road names were in country lanes made me laugh Grin Is this why people on here have bought garmins?

so many questions, ca you tell I'm a total novice :D

ibbydibby · 29/05/2011 16:31

thanks for shoe/sock comments, rather stupidly had not occurred to me to go up a shoe size....when I went through the first pair I returned them to the shop, owner said he would send them back as he agreed that 3 months wear was not great. I phoned in April and shop were still waiting to hear back from Saucony. Need to chase again. Am surprised that shop owner (a runner himself) did not suggest increasing a size, as when I returned them I had to buy another pair. These now have a hole as well.

Re toilet probs, I sometimes go through a phase of this, once it has happened once it happens the next few times (ie the need to go while on a run, not actually going). No ideas or suggestions other than what you eat/drink (tea helps me "go" so I don't drink too much of that in the hours before a run, I have to stick to water. Also timing - can you try varying the time you go running, to see if that helps?

Any chance of arranging your running route to include a toilet stop?

Feeling v unmotivated at present, think this is because went to running club track session on Thurs evening, and it poured with rain - absolutely torrential. But we carried on plodding round the track, and I hated it (am ashamed to say)

pawsnclaws · 29/05/2011 16:33

N4NNY - very common problem - I found cutting wheat completely from my diet has completely resolved it though! If I go back on wheat for even a couple of days I pay the price ......

sfxmum · 29/05/2011 16:43

welcome to n4nny & ibby I aspire to Marathons or even a half would be greatWink

bowel trouble seem to be a common problem I map routes with toilets although these days I don't need it much. avoiding coffee and certain other triggers foods helps

I don't really rate Nike regardless of size but it seems to suite some people, I only go half a size up but I guess it is on account of the shorter distances I have been running
I like the socks I have been wearing Experia I think they are called

had an active day running after dd on her bike then going for a run with dh while dd was at club, probably did double the expected

only remedy for that is to go have pizza for dinner

ibbydibby · 29/05/2011 16:48

june2009 use pins to put your number on, good idea to do it before hand than faff on the day (I always worry about it being lopsided, bit daft really).

Re pace, I have not (yet) succumbed to a Garmin or anything that tells me my pace, I just try to set off slowly, and then gradually increase my pace. Sorry that's not v scientific, but works for me. Usually find that I am at the back of the crowd, but slowly start overtaking people as get further into the run and that allways feels good.

ibbydibby · 29/05/2011 16:50

Ps also meant to say thanks for welcomes, you seem like a very friendly bunch!

sungirltan · 29/05/2011 18:01

hi folks, just checking in to say the 1/2 marathon happened. my time was 2.27 which although not amazing was my vvvvv personal best and i know thats the best ic could do part from the wee break i had to have 4 miles in!

it was very hard during the last half but i was running behond a crossfit team carrying a girl on a strether! toward the end they did all sorts of funny chants and shout out which were a great distraction :)

i got 2 mentions by the race announcer guy coming in to the finish which was really great because when dh and dn did it in 09 neither of them did! had a few freinds around the track too which helped alot. hope all your running is going well and thnaks for the cheers upthread xxxx

notyummy · 29/05/2011 18:18

Well done sungirltan! Was it windy? Really windy here in the east.

Did my circuit training and upped the weights in an effort to work really hard and build up my strength. Heading out tomorrow for a 5/6 mile session. Knee still slightly dodgy after the half marathon effort on Friday so don't want to go any further. I have booked an appointment at a running shop near work on Tuesday to have some gait analysis and new shoes to try and stop the knee ache. They are a couple of years old and I think I definitely need new ones.

peachsmuggler · 29/05/2011 18:24

Well done sungirl!!! that's a great achievement, and a pb is a pb!!!

June, I don't have a Garmin but just use a digital watch. There are markers every 1k so you should be able to check your pace is roughly on schedule. With experience you tend to have a feel for what pace you are running at though this is not so accurate as a Garmin
Definitely go out steady and save something for the second half when you hti your stride, and even, dare I say it, a little sprint finish Wink. Yes to safety pins, and do it beofre you get to the race!

sfx, pizza sounds good. No running here, but trip to the park and then some gardening I think justifies some very butter laiden rissotto...Smile

peachsmuggler · 29/05/2011 18:28

Badger, I think I've just sent you a request on FB. Am RS!

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 18:43

4 safety pins - in that profile pic on fb I only had 2 and it drove me demented flapping all the way round. Try on whatever top you will be wearing and then pin on before hand - nothing more annoying than having number too high up or too low down...

Did a nice 5+ miler at a good easy pace - will be interested to see splits when I get my Garmin (did I mention that? I'm sure I didn't :o) as I tend to start out slowly, which means that somewhere along the way I must be running sub 6 min/kms...it is still brutally windy here, several big old trees blown down in the park

mmm, pizza, risotto - gambas pil pil here (prawns with garlic, chilli and coriander)...and a glass of white, as I am not running tomorrow

sungirltan great stuff, well done on the pb

OP posts:
sungirltan · 29/05/2011 19:00

thanks thanks!! yes v windy whci made some of the route fecking hard. the hill up on to plymouth hoe was the v worst stretch. there is a 10k in october. think i will sign up to that and also half marathon down at eden around then too looks good. i was nearing the finish thinking i'm never bloody doing this again but like childbirth you soon change your mind!

pawsnclaws · 29/05/2011 19:03

driving your food always sounds lovely, what time am I coming round? Grin. Actually I have a craving for asparagus risotto today, but sadly have none of the essential ingredients, and I don't think my local petrol station stocks fresh asparagus ......

Well done suntangirl what a great achievement! A PB is a PB!

Welcome to anyone I haven't said hello to, as mentioned above if you want a pm for fb just let me know. June I would second the advice about 4 pins, I hate the feeling of a race number flapping over my ample boobage.

Just got in from my leisurely 6 miles with a friend. Was at a 40th birthday last night but wasn't drinking though it was a late night. Having a lovely cold g and t to make up for it now. Ds3 has gone to bed early and it's 25 minutes and counting till I get the other two up .......

DrNortherner · 29/05/2011 19:05

sungirltan well done on completing your half Smile

Welcome to teh newbies. I second going up a size definitely with running shoes. Today I treated myself to a new pair os Asics gel Kayano's, normally wear Asics, but currently have some Adidas Supernovas that dh bought me and I can not forgive them for giving me sore shins Grin Moshi says she runs is Kayanos so I thought if they are good enough for supermoshi they are good enough for me!

Where is cestlavie these days?

driving when are you getting you garmin? I am addicted to mine. I break out in a cold sweat at the thought of running without it now....it's like if I haven't uploaded it to Garmin Connect it never happened. Stupid really. You will be the same I tell ya!

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 19:23

Tuesday, hopefully for the Garmin...suntangirl - back in 2007 I was at a conference in Plymouth and did a few good miles round the Hoe - and then went and had a splendid meal with lashings of wine.

Well paws it's only the respectable dinners that get mentioned - I love to cook, but it's turned into a right chore since having DD and being totally skint 'reduced' in circumstances as they say (do they?) in Jane Austen.

Was wondering about cestlavie - do you think we scared him off with the bra discussion?

I too am an asics addict - I run in nimbus and am too paranoid about getting hurt to switch to anything else.

OP posts:
sungirltan · 29/05/2011 19:32

ah y'see i got supernovas because of shin splints and they are great - just broken in second pair :)

newbies i cannot, cannot stress enough about going to a specialist running shop if you are buying new trainers and getting a gait analysis or at least a proper fitting. i sued to run in nike air rifts more fool me i'm suprised i wasnt permanently mained by them! i wince every time i see someone running in either crap fashion trainers or those kind of retro i guess tennis shoes that have no resistance built in.

and yy to going up a size plus getting refitted if you have had a baby. i have gained half a size since dd on all shoes

pawsnclaws · 29/05/2011 19:50

On the shoes issue, I'm faithful to my Brooks, which suit my clown-like feet. I'm normally a 6-6 and a half, but my running shoes are a 7 and a half.

I was wondering about cestlavie, I don't think we scared him off - he's stuck with us through some fairly graphic pelvic floor advice, so I think he's made of pretty stern stuff! I suspect a hefty workload .... come back cestlavie we miss you being the rooster in the henhouse!

sfxmum · 29/05/2011 20:03

suntangirl well done on PB that is what is all about, outdoing yourself

dh took me on an route with a hill (modest one, southern softie style) I must do that again love the feeling at the top

paws I am a Brooks aficionado too

pizza yum drunk too much off to brave mega shopping centre tomorrow{shock] I am not really built for this, missing gene

hope everyone ahs a good half term week i will try and check him and do a couple more runs but am currently sorting out dd's 6th birthday party, trying to revise and and helping out with elderly relative

happy running
