sfx what is your exam? and when is it? (I walked out of finals and vowed never ever to sit another exam ever again: I have stuck to this)

driving I am, rather foolishly perhaps, doing a degree having skipped that when young, this one is on the 13th and it is about Mental Health policy and practice a 'critical view' it has always been the area I worked in along with SN. Taking a break now but soon to dive into self employment

Wheelybug · 29/05/2011 20:36

Well done Sungirltan - congrats on the PB !

Another Brooks wearer here - although I never seem to be able to get cheapy last seasons. Which reminds me, I need a new pair...

I too was wondering about cestlavie....

Welcome ibby

No running for me today - just a loooonnng trip around town looking at furniture. We bought nothing other than 2 birthday cards and a water bottle for me in the gym.

10K for me tomorrow I think.

squix · 29/05/2011 21:21

Hello - hope everyone is well - is it as windy everywhere as it is up here today? It?s very breezy.

Hi to ibbydibby ? welcome to the thread. I go up a size and ½ in my trainers and try not to tumble dry my running socks ? it always makes them shrink hugely.

Well done also to sungirltan - great PB!

Driving - did I read somewhere you are getting a Garmin? Grin

Shoes for me are Brooks too.

Anyway, did my Race for Life this morning ? had a great time. I was still feeling tired after last weekend and decided to keep with 2 of my friends doing the race (there were 4 of us doing it but 1 is Mrs Speedy McSpeedy) . One had a baby 6 months ago and one started running in January and they asked me to pace them to try and get round in 30 mins. Was happy to run with them and it was good fun running and not worrying about my own time.

The run was in the grounds of Stirling University which is in a lovely setting ? views of the Wallace (For Freedom!/Braveheart ) Monument and Ochill Hills. When we arrived it was pouring down, then sun then rain again. Then the sun came out for the race. As always with these things there was a very enthusiastic aerobics instructor leading the warm up - I?ve learnt from experience to do my own thing otherwise I end up knackered after the warm up.

There were some fabulous costumes ? loads of pink wigs and fairy wings. It?s always so touching reading the back of everyone?s T Shirts at a Race for Life, both those ?in memory of ....? and those ? in celebration of ....? One of the things that I was impressed with was the start was well structured in terms of runners and walkers.

So I tootled round with my friends ? we paced pretty steadily at 10 minute miles - a couple of wee hills, round a loch, a bit of a stoney path then round the university athletics track (very bouncey) to the finish. Picked up pace with my friend who was convinced she wouldn?t do it but we crossed the line in under 30 minutes ? if fact all 4 of us did. Time on the Garmin was 29.01 ? time on the clock was 27 BUT apparently they forgot to switch on the clock until 2 minutes had gone. D?oh. Garmin also said distance was 4.5 k so not quite 5k, but close enough for us.

I was really proud of us all. Then off for a lovely lunch and a proper catch up. I actually really enjoyed the race ? no pressure and great company.

R4L was probably my first organised running event 12 years ago ? round Authur?s seat in Edinburgh and I always enjoy it. I think it has done great things for encouraging women to run, aside from the charity aspects.

The girls are now talking about a 10k. (I think we?ll give Loch Ness a miss this year backwardpossum we reckon it would be a logistic nightmare for us all) but there is the Great Edinburgh 10k at the start of October and another Cancer Research 10k close by in the middle of October) that we will probably attempt. It will be a good sharpener for the Great South at the end of October for me as well.

So a lovely day and I now feel ready to get back into the rhythm of a training programme.

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 21:39

squix that sounds very enjoyable - so have you been running for 12 years then?

totally crazy with the wind here today - sun actually pretty warm, so I am red-faced from my run Blush

DebiTheScot · 29/05/2011 21:52

Have just done a quick skim through the last couple of days.

I sometimes have the bowels problem too. Usually near the end of a run and always make it home. Sometimes the feeling goes away too. Not sure why but my running friend also gets it and she reckons it's when she gets too hot.

The spitting comments made me laugh. I don't usually. Backwards, you're not 'Northern'. Since living down south I have discovered that Northern stops at the border. Us Scots are a whole different breed!

squix my dh is exactly the same as yours!

My socks are from Asda and I've had them for about 3 years so I clearly don't run enough!

I'm up at my parents at the moment and they used to be runners. My mum did sub 2 hour halfs and my dad did a marathon in 2:52. I'm never going to be as fast as them and got a bit fed up with my mum saying "my pb for the 10k is 14 minutes" (or whatever it is) after I was very pleased with myself for doing it in 54 (I think, although I think it was shorter than 10k). That was 1 reason I decided to do the sprint tri as she'd never done anything like that.
Anyway, my dad is trying to persuade me to do a half marathon. I see doyouthinktheysawus is doing the Windsor half at the end of Sept. If I decided to go for one do you think that'd be a reasonable timescale?
I should put my tri in July on the list I suppose. Oh and sign up for the 10k I'm meant to be doing in July too.

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 21:55

blimey - I'm glad I don't have parental running expectations to live up to! my mum always says things like, 'well, stop if it gets too hard'!

I hate to point it out, folks, but the finishing line for this thread is, by my reckoning, about 2.5 days away, so could we update the races list before we pass on the baton to the new thread? I'll put it up tomorrow

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 29/05/2011 21:56

That sound like a fun race squix I read the line One had a baby 6 months ago and one started running in January without the and in the middle and thought she's started running at 8 months pg!

DebiTheScot · 29/05/2011 21:56

duh, without one in the middle

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 21:56

and also, Debi unlike me, you can't blame your genes when it all goes pear-shaped!

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 29/05/2011 22:03

How about if we want a race added too or taken off the list we just put it in a post and then 1 person can update the list for the new thread because it takes ages to load onn my iphone when there's huge posts otherwise someone will get missed out.

06/07/11- Yately 10k (not actually booked yet): DebiTheScot
17/07/11- Chichester (Sprint) Triathlon: DebiTheScot

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 22:06

good idea Debi - unless you give me information I'll assume that what's on the list is correct (you can all update it later if you want!)

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 29/05/2011 22:14

I get to run my half marathon on the next thread.......eek.

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 22:16

sub 2, as well, DrNo, with special Northern spitting Wink

OP posts:
squix · 29/05/2011 22:22

Driving - I suppose I did start 12 / 13 years ago when I moved up to Edinburgh, but its been sort of on and off since then. I grew up in a house where running was the norm but it took me until my late 20's until I took it up myself. I lived on the edge of a great park and had just come out of my first serious relationship and I suppose I used running as therapy.

Didn't really do much more than 5ks until 2002 which is when I did my first 1/2 marathon in Glasgow. (Blimey that's 9 years ago!) Did another 1/2 couple of years after that (few 10ks in between) and then got really busy as it was about that time I left permananet employment and set up a small business - eek. So I became much more recreational just fitting in the odd run when I could. Also became keen on going to classes around that time too - Body Combat, Body Attack etc. 2006 did the Moonwalk in Edinburgh and that was the last major event before becoming pregnant with DD.

Since having DD 4 years ago up until last year I ran a tiny bit but without much enthusiasm - never more than about 3 miles and only then because I thought I should. Then about this time last year I realised that I really needed to do something about my weight - it had crept up on me and I embarked on a diet and exercise programme. Cut down on carbs and upped my running. Decided I needed a goal and entered a 10 K last October - enjoyed the training, realised I could up my miles and ease up a wee bit on the diet.

Decided after the 10k to look for another challenge, toyed with the idea of a marathon, realised I wouldn't have the time to train (still running same small business) so would go for another 1/2. That's the one I did in Edinburgh last week. So I was chuffed that I was faster than I was 9 years ago, which considering I am v. nearly 40 is not bad going. Grin.

Plus - I have lost 4ish stone / 26 kg over the last 12 months - I still watch what I eat but now it's about maintenance rather than loosing weight and running has really put me in touch with my body (I sound like the hippy now!) and I think I have finally found a balance with what I eat and the exercise I do. Now, its about acheiving goals rather than losing weight and also enjoying running - I enjoyed today as much I did last week.

Crikely that was long - My Running Life by Squix age 39 and 11 months! [Grin]

futurity · 29/05/2011 22:23

Me too (half in next thread...not sub 2!). Last long run tomorrow...11 long miles...eek!

DrNortherner · 29/05/2011 22:26

Good luck futurity with the long run tomorrow. I did my last 11 miler yesterday. Going to do 10k tomorrow. I have eaten like a horse today!

driving where did you get this sub 2 hour idea from? Wink I ca promise though there will be some spitting Grin However, I don't have bowel issues thank the lord. What a catch I would be if I combined the 2 Grin

notyummy · 29/05/2011 22:28

26kg! That is amazing. Well done.

squix · 29/05/2011 22:29

Debi - Having a DH like that is very annoying isn't it! Mine claims he was a gazelle in a previous life. Smile at my friend taking up running at 8 months pregnant.

Whilst my dad is a runner, my mum sounds more in line with yours driving - I take after her. I have a very competative younger sister who takes after my dad.....

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 22:32

DrNo I thought you had suggested it somewhere - or am I mis-remembering. Lol at spitting and bowels - lord!

26kg in a year - that's amazing! I seem incapable of shifting the 2-3kg I need to get rid of (although last week's trauma helped a bit); I just think that running justifies eating...I think I should try before my next race to lose a bit - I'm about 61kg, but should really be under 60, being a short-arse - am quite muscly though

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 29/05/2011 22:35

I did suggest it but only on here, not out loud and not in RL. I don't like pressure you understand? Grin

drivingmisscrazy · 29/05/2011 22:42

yes, I understand - well, you will be hard-pressed not to beat me in the Infamous Half-Marathon of Indefinite Duration. God I hated that race! My running pal at work (cork city marathon, monday week, go Niamh!) did point out that it would make for great stories in years to come - which wouldn't be true if I'd done a nice solid sort of 2h15min sort of time, as planned.

I bet you will go sub-2. As long as you don't actually mention it. My lips are sealed.

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 29/05/2011 22:50

Won't be doing the Windsor 1/2, it's full. There are another couple near me in end Sept, start Oct though. Might have to talk to my friend (who is so fit she could just do it tomorrow having done nothing but eat chocolate all day today)

YeahThatsTheBadger · 29/05/2011 23:04

Right, I'm going to add my two to the list cos then I can't back out...

26/6/11 - R4L Luton: YeahThatsTheBadger
2/10/11 - The Run '11 Northampton: YeahThatsTheBadger

I have no competitive family members when it comes to running but definitely when it comes to weight. My mum often tells me "Well, I was 5 and a half stone the day I walked out of the hospital after having both my children, you really should make an effort Badger"! My tongue is seriously scarred from having to bite it so often. Smile

Sounds like a really lovely race squix

Oh and well done sungirltan!
