Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

I'm just marking my place on this thread as i'm really tempted to start running this year. I've not run before either and am worried about looking an idiot but I think i'd enjoy it once I started. Smile

MissAnthrope · 01/01/2011 20:41

I did this in 2009 ready to do the Race For Life.

It was really great, and I couldn't believe how quickly I progressed from wanting to die beginner to running a fair distance.

I'm going to start this again over the next couple of days.

PersonalClown · 01/01/2011 20:41

Wait for me!! I start next week once we are back into the school routine.

JeanLouiseFinch · 01/01/2011 20:42

Dobby I have been thinking about doing this too. The gym I go to has a running club that I'd love to join. Although they say beginners are welcome I would like to be able to get further than the end of the street first. Wink

Makingchanges · 01/01/2011 20:42

Oh I'll join in too - started last year but had to stop due to probs with hip and knee and lots of physio - should be ok this year so am going to start again.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/01/2011 20:44

Am a rubbish runner, always have been, but if there's a space for someone like me, I will give it a go, so am marking my place.

PersonalClown · 01/01/2011 20:45

I've got the app on my ipod so I can load my own music and it will tell me when I need to switch between running and walking.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/01/2011 20:46

Oo Oo iPod app. Which one?!

PersonalClown · 01/01/2011 20:51

I've got this one

I've had a listen and it's very clear and simple/

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/01/2011 21:17

Thank you. I shall get that. Does anyone else genuinely think running for 1 min will be a challenge?

dobby2001 · 01/01/2011 21:28

Wow lots of new posts in such a short time [smile)

If you google couch to 5k there are a few downloadable podcasts you can use, I have the nhs one from here

Itsthawooluff · 01/01/2011 21:32

I did this a couple of years ago but am back to lardy land so am up for this again.

BelligerentGhoul · 01/01/2011 22:04

Can I do this without an i-pod/MP3 player, as I haven't got one!

Can anybody recommend any pretty cheap but okay trainers please? And a sports bra for stupid 32E norks?

PersonalClown · 01/01/2011 22:12

If you are 32E then nothing short of Shock Absorber will do!! Trust me I'm a 36HH!

Google couch to 5k and read up on the weeks routine. Then time yourself. It's pretty simple, just alternating walking and jogging at different times.

Thanks Clown - Shock Absorber is a brand, yes?

PersonalClown · 01/01/2011 22:27

Yes it is

One of the best for us large or nork ladies.

BelligerentGhoul · 01/01/2011 22:35

Thanks :)

Oh yes definitely get fitted. It's all personal choice and how it feels.

dobby2001 · 01/01/2011 22:44

Maryz have never run before myself and will be starting Monday so you are not alone!

Regarding bras I have got a great one from Marks and spencer and i am a 40B Shock used it for some brief high intensity circuit training last year afte i embarressed myself the first week having to erm hold myself down Blush it safely held me down so should be ok.

With trainers i would do some research about type of shoe you need -visit running shoe shop or do "wet foot test" as described here http://www.sportsshoes.com/running-shoes-advice/ here but try some on before searching for best buy. I have a couple of online bargains i have my eye on but am off to try some brand on tomorrow before commiting

Can I hang around here? I finished C25K in November, did a 6K Santa Jog just before Christmas (and could speak a little on the way!), did about 2.25miles on a treadmill this last week, which I did not enjoy, as it was so hot indoors.

Now, thw challenge for me is the full time job I'm starting next week. How will I keep it up? And I want to, because the benefits are so worth it.

whoodoo · 01/01/2011 22:48

Marking my place too. Ran a couple of half marathons 4 years ago before the three kids ( not showing off at the 13 miles- you'd be amazed only a year before I couldn't manage a single mile). Desperate to get back in to it when I find the energy cos it's addictive. Still feeding though and worried I could wet myself Shock. Was a 30G before the feeding - shock absorbers all the way.

Dobby- as far as I remember supernate or pronate is what u need to establish at the shop with your trainers.

sybilfaulty · 01/01/2011 22:53

Hello nobiggy, good to see you again. Our old thread rather died off in December didn't it?

I did C25K last summer and did my first 5k in Dec. Haven't run since really because of snow, wine, excess etc but am looking forward to getting back into it again now. I am going to do a 10k at the end of May but will try to squeeze ano 5k in before then.

Catilla · 01/01/2011 22:54

I am interested in joining in too. Used couch to 5k to go from non-runner to jogger and completed (slowly) two 5Ks in 2009, but last year had real problems with motivation.

Did anyone else who's done it before find it's hard to keep going in the last few weeks? I really felt it was tough when the walk breaks suddenly disappeared and you were expected to do double the length of run every time out. I've been back a few times to around week 4-5 but never felt able to go on to runs longer than about 5 mins each. I really hoped to begin enjoying the running itself rather than the satisfaction of progress, but it hasn't happened. :(

Perhaps this year??
