DoYou thank you so much for the kind words and sponsorship. Am in a very blubby mood this morning as the charity sent through their annual report today and I'm just filled with sadness at what people have been through. I think we're a really nice community of runners albeit a virtual one. Thank you.

playthedayaway sorry to hear about your son. How is his treatment going? I'm sure a 10k is achievable in a couple of months, maybe with a run/walk strategy. I'm sure someone will know of a training programme.

What are we all doing today? I'm resting my achy legs for my 20m tomorrow.

sfxmum · 11/03/2011 11:15

hello all. quick look in from plodder (slow and steady to recover)Hmm

best of luck for this weekend
also have managed to find 3 pages for donations, if I missed anyone say so, it is all for good causes Grin

the only 'race' I have booked is the GOSH in June family fun walk/jog when we will be taking out dd who will be 6 by then, she is terribly excited to do a 5K and hopes to get a medal

happy running all

pawsnclaws · 11/03/2011 11:35

Sfxmum and cestlavie - thank you so much. You guys are amazing. Am a big believer in karma and the positive powers of giving. Bless you all.

cestlavie · 11/03/2011 11:42

Managed to find a little time to sponsor those very deserving folk on here who've set up sites (DrNo, Paws, Moshi and Doyou) - all for very great causes so good on your all.

playthedayaway sorry to hear about your son - hope things are improving. Good luck on the 14 mile walk. If you can do that then I'm sure you can get round a 10k run, albeit, as paws says, with a run and walk strategy. The key thing is probably finding a sensible training programme to take you as far as you can in the time available and not to push yourself so you end up getting injured. In addition to those above, Runners World have good 5k and 10k training programmes so worth looking there. In terms of finding the time, I just find it where I can, usually by running into work first thing. When you've got a lot on it's just a question of trying to make the training work around it (e.g. maybe running to school to pick up kids, popping out in the evening after kids are down).

Gorgeous 13 mile run in this morning in 1.48, average 8.20 per mile so not Moshi speeds but easy and steady. Absolutely perfect conditions - bright blue sky, crisp cold air, no wind, following canals down to the Thames and then the Thames all the way in. One of those days when it all works - dontcha love days like that!

MoshiMoshi · 11/03/2011 13:02

Welcome to playthedayaway! Sorry to hear your sad news but it is good you are doing something positive. I am sure you will be able to find a plan to get you round a 10k. I suspect a walk/run approach will be your best bet.

paws - have sponsored you so you are even more committed to doing your run in 4 weeks in Brighton now!

Thank you thank you, sfx and cestlavie! This is a truly remarkable place to have produced such positive life affirming actions. (sorry sounding cheesy but am on a post-22 mile run high Grin!)

Well, I managed 22 miles very slowly today (average pace 9:05m/m) which got me plenty of time on feet for training purposes! I tried using some sorbothane insoles which definitely helped with the shock absorption although I still felt my shin pain and knee pain. I suspect I am going to have these niggles until I ease off the mileage. Anyway, I have now done 1x18 miler, 2x20 milers and 1x22 miler. I hope to fit in two more 20 milers (with one of these racing 13.1 miles at MP) to get me up to 6 LRs for this marathon campaign. While that should help the endurance side of things, I definitely feel like I need a few more of these long ones before they feel comfortable and like I can ease up the pace if I wanted to. At the moment, it just feels like a real slog!

Enjoy the sunshine everyone. Happy injury-free runnning!

sfxmum and cestlavie just wanted to say a massive thany you to you both, I feel completely overwhelmed by your generositySmile

The support I've had from this thread has made such a difference. I do all my runs alone and I know DH gets very a bit bored of my running ramblings, although he is kind enough to never say anything. It's just so nice to have people to share the highs and lows with, so thankyou to all of youSmile

Very good day for a run cestlavie, your run sounds lovely. I was saying to the ds's on the way to school how typical it is for me to run in rubbish weather and on my rest days it's lovelyHmm

Having a lovely rest today, have done some baking and now I'm icing my ankle as it's a bit niggly and resting my legs.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/03/2011 13:05

x-posts

Well done on your 22 miles Moshi, that's a hell of a pace for that distance. You really picked a lovely day for it tooSmile

DrNortherner · 11/03/2011 13:17

playthedayaway here is a plan for begginners, will get you upto running contin for 30 mins in 8 weeks Good luck! Everyone on this thread us great for support and encouragement!

I did an 8 mile steady run yesterday and just got back from a 9 mile walk with a friend and our dogs. We too sarnies and had lunch outside, it was lovely. Had a hairy moment in a field with horses who were spooked by our dogs (they were on leads) and we could not get out Blush teh farmer came along and was very Yorkhsire and not at all helpful at two silly townies stuck in a paddock with his horses!

cestlavie thanks for the sponsorship. I am overwhelmed by all your support.

Come pay day I will be sponsoring you all too. Smile

Wheelybug · 11/03/2011 13:25

Right I've managed to sponsor everyone I think ! All such great, inspirational causes. Well done everyone.

Welcome Playthedayaway. So sorry to hear about your son. As the others have said I am sure you'll be able to do the 10K even if you walk/run. Where/when is it ? Is it in aid of the Royal Marsden ? One of my friends is just about to start treatment with them sadly so I would be interested in running if I can.

Well done on the runs today (like the term 'not Moshi speed' - it could be a new technical term) and good luck for those over the weekend.

pawsnclaws · 11/03/2011 13:37

Thank you so much Wheelybug and Moshi for the sponsorship and kind words. It's given me a massive lift today to see my figure going up.

DrN we got stuck in a field full of cows last year on holiday in Cornwall, and ended up having to climb a gate to get out - with poor DH lifing our massive pushchair and ds3 over the gate as well.

Well done on your long run Moshi I can only dream of speeds like that ....

MoshiMoshi · 11/03/2011 13:45

Thank you for the donation, wheely!!

Cows can be scary! Horses are just lovely .

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 11/03/2011 13:50

We were surrounded by electric fences so no climbing for us Grin

I think horses are beautiful but have no experience of them whatsoever so they scare me. The faces are just so huge.

sfxmum · 11/03/2011 13:55

thanks cestlavie for the handy list I knew I had missed someone

best of luck to you all, it is my pleasure to support you, enjoy the day/s I am sure it will be emotiona and so worth it

as master said I often think of the inspiring and phenomenal Twink I hope you are well somewhere out there

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/03/2011 13:55

Wheely thankyou so much, so generous of you!

Had to smile at you getting stuck by horses DrNo, not something I have experienced thankfully.

Cows, on the other hand, I have too much experience with. They scare the hell out of meBlush I got chased by cows in Northumberland last summerShock Ok, they were in a field and I was the other side of the fence but they chased me all along the edge of the field, I think I nearly got to Moshi paceGrin

I meet them alot on the Downs too, cows that is....My mum tells me they are only a problem when they have young and can be a bit over-protective, but from what I can see they have young for much of the yearConfused

Can you tell I'm not a country girl?Grin

playthedayaway · 11/03/2011 14:17

Grrrr just wrote a reply to you all and lost connection when I tried to post it!

DrNorth, thank you so much for the training guide, it looks great and I should be able to manage it o.k. Really looking forward to 8 weeks time to see how far I've come!

Wheelybug - I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Yes the run is in aid of the Royal Marsden. They are a fantastic hospital, your friend will be very well looked after there. I think the run is the BUPA London 10k one? You can contact the Marsden for more information.

Thank you to everyone for the support and encouragement, you will definately be seeing more of me over the next few weeks, asking questions and moaning no doubt, lol.

My son is fine, he has completed two lots of chemo and has six more to go but he seems to be coping with it really well, I just hope it stays that way!

Good luck to all of you with your runs, I'd love to be able to sponsor all of you but we don't have much money. Can I do a pound or two?

pawsnclaws · 11/03/2011 17:53

playthedayaway glad to hear your ds is coping OK. It must seem a very long hard road at the moment. Get started on your training plan and let us know how you get on. For me personally running has always been about coping with the stresses of daily life - just to warn you though you could end up addicted and that 10k turns to a half-marathon .... Smile.

Please don't worry about sponsorship for me, it's really kind and every penny is appreciated - but I would hate to think of anyone pledging money they can't spare. The money is lovely, but the kind words from those on this thread mean so much too.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/03/2011 18:14

playthedayaway good to hear you ds is responding to treatment, what an awful experience for you all.

I hope the training goes ok.

I can only echo what paws said, please don't feel you have to sponsor anyone. That goes for everyone

Honestly, all support is appreciatedGrin

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/03/2011 18:19

Pressed post too soon.

I mean, just having people to talk to and grumble when things are going not so well means so much.

playthedayaway · 11/03/2011 19:20

Thanks all, you are all so lovely Smilexxx

MoshiMoshi · 12/03/2011 07:56

Agree that the support on the thread is more valuable in many ways than the donation to the charity for the race!

Happy running this weekend everyone. Any long ones planned?

OP posts:
Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/03/2011 08:12

I am leaving for 20 miles in about 15 mins

Every time I do a long run, I spend the hours before convincing myself I can't do it! Aargh!!

I know I'll be fine, less than a mile more than last week, cut back week next week, positive thoughts....ramble, rambleGrin

How are your legs today Moshi?

Good luck to anyone else with running planned.

DrNortherner · 12/03/2011 08:19

Morning All. I am taking ds to football soon, then I have an Armed Forces Fitness sesh on the stray. Doing an early 6 miler tomorrow. Rest on Monday.

I felt more knackered yesterday after an 9 mile walk than after a run - what's all that about?

peachsmuggler · 12/03/2011 09:28

Paws, have sponsored you. Am sure it will be an emotional day for you and your family, but am sure you will have a great day!

Wheely, I like your thinking re. the New York marathon ; ) Hope you have a great birthday weekend for DD and that she is feeling better.

MrsWed, shame about the spen 20 but glad you are getting out there, it will come back.

Welcome playtheday, you will be fine for the 10k, just follow one of the programs recommended above and take it slowly. Glad your DS is responding to treatment, I can't imagine what you all must have been through the last few months. I think the fact that you are doing this and setting up a charity is truly inspiring. Stick with us and you'll be up and running in no time!

sfxmum, the GOSH with your DD sounds lovely. Would love to do something like that with my DD when she is old enough.

Cestlavie, your 13 miles yesterday sounds awesome. This time of year is my favourite time to run. Bright skies but no heat yet. I reaaaalllly struggle in the summer!

Wow Moshi, am so impressed at how many long runs you are getting in, and the speed of them!!! When do you start tapering for the VLM?

Hope the ankle is ok Doyouthink, you'll have gone now, but good luck for your 20. Can't wait to hear how it goes!

DrNorth, perhaps it was the horse trauma that tired you out! Am always a bit wary of large animals and would have freaked out I reackon! Agree on the huge faces....

Lovely weather today, but feeling a bit tired from yoga (trying to do handstands?!?) so planning 6 miles tomorrow. Must try new routes, as old ones and getting... well old!

playthedayaway · 12/03/2011 10:46

Back again already!

Thank you Peach, your words mean a lot.

I went out for my first training session this morning and how naive was I thinking it wouldn't be a problem?!Blush

There is no way, even running really slowly, lol, I could have held a conversation whilst doing it! Will this come with time? I'm so unfit, I can't hold a conversation when walking!

I saw on here someone asking for advice on breathing...any tips for a newbie?

Also advice much needed on warm up stretches please, my calves are killing me, lol!

Hope you're all enjoying your weekend!xx

DrNortherner · 12/03/2011 13:03

playthedayaway how long did you run for? If you are so out of breath maybe you ran too fast? Common error with new runners. Just aim for a gentle jog, just faster than walking pace. You need to build up your stamina gradually, then you can work on pace. Don't be disheartened, and stick at it!

I took a beasting at Armed Forces Fitness today. Actually nearly threw up. And got covered in mud. Great fun Grin

Off shoping now, dh said he will treat me to a new pair of trainers and I am excited. I used to get excited about a new pair of sexy high heels, what is happening to me?......
