DrN I feel your pain, not so much on age but growing up I was always mistaken for a boy. I was very tomboyish admittedly .... but there comes a point when you get sick of hearing "how old is your son?" directed at me, or "would your little boy like a turn?"!

I have my birthday money from my mum and dad and my inlaws to be added to my webpage this week, so I'll be pretty much at my target! Everyone has been so generous.

peachsmuggler I think a club or something similar is definitely a lesson learned for me from this marathon. I was really hopeful a friend was going to do it with me, but she decided against it so I've been slogging away on my own.

Wheelybug · 14/03/2011 18:21

Hi All

HAd a busy weekend here with dd2's birthday and caught her lurgy so I have been another one on the sick bench. No running over the weekend and no gym sesh tomorrow as I have parents evening (well morning obviously..). But my Mum is staying until weds morning so I have said she can'tleave until I have been out for an 8 miler.

Playtheday - thanks for the info about the run. Unforetunately we're away then but let us know if any others come up. Well done on your first run ! The first of many....

Sorry to the other ill and tired out folk - hamster, Paws, doyou, DrNorth. Hope you're all feeling better.

Have a good running week everyone !

Themasterandmargaritas · 14/03/2011 19:09

Oh you are all sick, that is such a shame, I hope you are all feeling better soon.

C'est I am starting with intervals this week, my problem is that all my routes are hilly whichever way I turn so I think I shall have to go to the school playing field. Which could prove to be a tiny bit embarrassing if I don't time it right. Grin I am starting with 5x 3 mins with 90 second recovery.

I did a 10k hilly run yesterday with a much younger colleague of mine who has unfeasibly long legs. We managed 58 mins but I want to get it down to 55...

The good news is is that the rain is coming so my temperatures will drop, sounds ridiculous to you guys I'm sure but I am happy. Grin

cestlavie · 14/03/2011 20:39

Gosh everyone has been struggling with the lurgy - hope you're all of the sick bench soon.

Peaches have thought about running clubs but I tend to work late so first thing in the morning is best time for me to fit stuff in which unfortunately doesn't work with running clubs. Plus to be honest, the rest of the time is so filled with other people it's nice to have the solitude of running sometimes. Hmmm, someone should write a book about loneliness and long distance running...

themaster shame about the hills. Surely sensible intervals would be slowly on the up bits and nice and fast on the down bits? Grin

Wheelybug · 14/03/2011 21:56

I agree Cestlavie - I'm not a social runner. I like the idea of a running club to get me working at things rather than just 'going for a run' but the best thing for me is having an hour or so to myself without having to answer to anyone. I have only ever run with DH and it puts me in a bad mood (and I otherwise quite like spending time with him grin])

peachsmuggler · 14/03/2011 22:20

Moshi, keep meaning to ask, how's your mum doing now?

MoshiMoshi · 14/03/2011 22:27

Oh, peach you are sweet. Well her wrist seems to have healed and she seems back to her old self remarkably quickly. She would surprise my dad with her resilience as he always treated her as a delicate little flower.

On the topic of running clubs I am definitely heading down to mine after VLM to do their speed sessions so I can work on pace! I would like to have a good crack at a decent 10K time on the 30 May and also inject some speed into me for my triathlons. I have been wanting to get down for some time but worried about adding speed sessions on top of the high mileage as I am already falling apart on the mileage alone Grin. I have submitted my application form and sent a cheque in so am going to be officially a member of the West 4 Harriers as soon as I receive the paperwork! What is everyone's club called and how serious are the members? Some are super serious and some comprised more of less serious ("fun") runners (if I dare say that without offending anyone!)

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 15/03/2011 07:35

THis is my club

The Elite runners are super fast and look like honed athletes. I started to have others to run with as not great at pushing myself on my own. I started doin the social runs with the slower group, then moved up to the next group, then decided to have a go at training sessions with the club coach, and although I am always in the last 5/6 people I love it and know it is improving my running no end. And I have to remind myself they are a great club with lots of great runners, so even if coming last I am doing great Grin

It is however full of running cranks with garmins beeping after every lap, talk of pb's and foam rolling. But I think I am now a fully fledged running crank too Grin

Moshi surely you can not get any faster?! You are speedy already.

thecoo · 15/03/2011 09:28

Only got a mo' as start work in 5 mins but just wanted to say that I also read Born to Run and really LOVED it. I just got it back from a friend I lent it to and think I may read it again. I'm excited to look up some of the other books you've mentioned too.

Hope you all have a good day whether it's running, resting or recovering...

playthedayaway · 15/03/2011 13:18

Hello, hello sorry for the delay in replying to you all but for some reason I haven't been able to log on to Mumsnet?!

Sorry to hear that some of you are feeling so poorly, I hate being ill I just hide in bed if I can til I'm better.

I took all your advice on board when I went out again on Monday and really slowed down. It was much more comfortable I wasn't AS out of breath as on Saturday. I love the feeling of acheivement and pushing myself.

I did get a stich though Blush

At the moment I can't ever imagine running like most of you do, just to complete 10k at all will be my goal, lol.

MoshiMoshi · 15/03/2011 16:21

There are some fast runners, there, DrNo! The elites are like another breed of human being all together aren't they? Running with them makes me feel like a small child Grin.

Well done, playthedayaway! Little steps will get you there. If it makes you feel better, I am really a rookie in marathon terms and finding my way around now. Apparently, after a few more I will find it much easier (hurray!)

At the moment I am T I R E D. I did 8 miles with 6x800m at 5K pace except my warm up was uncomfortable as my shin hurt and then 5K pace was more akin to half or marathon pace. I just felt very heavy in the legs and couldn't muster anything quicker than a 6:40m/m pace for the intervals. Not the best of runs but I am told it is because I am absorbing the mileage and it will all come good on the day with a decent taper. Hope so.

Enjoy the beautiful weather everyone!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 15/03/2011 17:01

Well done for getting out there again playthedayaway, you will get fitter very quickly.

I am a very anti-social runner, hate running with othersHmm A running club wouldn't suit me at all! I cna understand you work harder though, I've pushed myself harder at times to keep faster runners in sight and stuff but generally I love the time to myself.

I know that TIRED feeling Moshi I think the training is beginning to take it's toll. Still feel a bit under par but managed intervals, just kept the pace fairly comfortable.

I'm starting to have doubts that I'm ready nowBlush I know I can run a lot further and I am (a bit) faster judging by my times but the doubts are starting to creep in...Suppose it's normal!

DrNortherner · 15/03/2011 17:05

I have a club training sesh tonight Moshi shall I wear my Garmin and post my interval times. That will put things into perspective for you! I would love to run at Moshipace.

Loving Moshipace - who coined that phrase? Grin

Wheelybug · 15/03/2011 17:35

Hi All - May I ask a bit of advice from the seasoned racers amongst you.

My 8.2 miles is a week on sunday. I haven't run since last week when I did 5 miles. Am still a bit under the weather, but not too much and hopefully tomorrow will be even better, and I don't know how much of it is just tiredness as not getting a lot of sleep at the mo. I have only run the 8.2 miles twice. Both times were fine and I have run 7-7.5 miles a lot more.

I don't have much running time left - tomorrow I have the most time, then we are away at the weekend so will be hard to fit in a long run and then gym essions thurs, tues, thurs.

Does this sound a good plan or would you do more/less-

Tomorrow morning 8 miles
Thurs - 5 miles
w/e - 6 miles
Tues - 5 miles
Thursday - 5 miles or less depending on how I'm feeling.

Does this sound about right or would you do more ? AM hoping I feel up to the 8 miler tomorrow. Otherwise I'm a bit scuppered Grin.

Sorry if thats all a bit convoluted !

MoshiMoshi · 15/03/2011 19:00

Wheely - I think that looks fine to me. You are managing runs just a few miles short of the distance and will also manage the distance in training, so combined those two factors should give you the ability and confidence to make it round. You might not be PBing but it should be comfortable enough!

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 15/03/2011 23:06

Thanks Moshi - I had so wanted to run further than the distance as you had advised a while ago but circumstances have prevented me from doing so. As everyone else I'm supposed to be doing it with has dropped out I shall still feel smug pleased to get round !

Must away to bed so that I feel up to it in the morning !!

pawsnclaws · 16/03/2011 07:23

Have a good run, wheelybug.

thecoo · 16/03/2011 08:08

Hope your 8 miler goes well today Wheelybug!

I need some advice. There's a 10 mile race in the town where I live in June and I'm wondering whether to enter. I've entered 3 races before (5k, 10k and Great South Run) but only managed to do the 10k due to injuries, and now I've got this stupid feeling that if I enter a race I'll get injured again. I think I need to show myself that races don't jinx me (though what if I do get injured? Shock)

I'm currently running 3-5 miles about 5 times a week, and have managed a (very very slow) 7 miles about a month back. Do I have enough time to do this? Or is it a bit over ambitious and likely to lead to injury (thereby confirming instead of eliminating my fear)?

pawsnclaws · 16/03/2011 09:24

thecoo I think you absolutely have time to work up to your 10 if you've managed 7 miles, even if it was slow. Is it a recurring injury or something different each time?

Goldberry · 16/03/2011 10:17

Hello all! I haven't been around for a while, as I've been waiting for my foot to get better, and reading about your running makes me Envy when I can't go out! Hope those with the lurgy are feeling better.
I've just managed to walk-jog-walk for 30 mins, which is the first time I've run without pain since I injured my foot mid-Feb, so let's hope I can keep going!
thecoo - I know just what you mean. I first injured my foot doing my first 10k, so I'm a bit worried about the 10k I'm supposed to be doing in May, particularly as I'm now recovering from the same injury again.
playthedayaway - well done for getting into running. I was horrendously unfit when I started, but improved steadily. Just try not to overdo it at first!
Wheely - good luck today!
Hope everyone else is doing well - I haven't had time to catch up with the whole thread since I sloped off!

cestlavie · 16/03/2011 11:24

thecoo agree with paws that you've got plenty of time to work up to that very comfortably. In terms of avoiding injury (assuming it's not the same problem every time) if's probably just a question of getting a balanced training regime and making sure you leave enough rest days in it. For example, rather than running 3 - 5 miles, 5 times a week, you might get more benefit (and less injury risk) from say 4 sessions a week of say 1x speed session, 1x hill session, 1x long run and 1x recovery run.

Wheely hope your run goes well today. That schedule sounds fine to me... guess my only question would be whether you want to make your last run a little shorter to try and taper.

Welcome back goldberry - hope your foot staying injury free. Good to hear you made it through the 30 minutes!

Wheelybug · 16/03/2011 12:26

Thanks all - I did it. Felt like the last thiing I wanted to do and did a route I could cut short at any number of occasions but I stuck with it and did 13.5K in about 1 hr 12. So I think that's a bit over 8.2 miles and an ok time given am full of snot and shattered. Hopefully by next week the snot will be gone and DD2 might have remembered how to sleep a little better. And I did 2 big hills today and the route next week is flat.

Cest - I think you are indeed right about me cutting my last run shorter. Anything for an easier life me Grin.

Thecoo - good luck with training for the 10 miles. I'm sure you can do it too !

Gold - nice to see you again. Hope you stay injury free.

Hope everyone else has had good runs today !

pawsnclaws · 16/03/2011 13:19

Well done wheelybug time sounds good to me too. No running for me today as my chest is a bit tight still, though the cough seems to be on its way out thank goodness. Have booked the gym for tomorrow so that's something to look forward to - on my birthday!!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 16/03/2011 13:46

Well done on getting your run done wheely, that will give you no end of confidence on the day.

thecoo go for the 10 miler, just build up really slowly!

Hello Gold, hope you get back to regular injury free running soon.

Hope you are better soon paws And Happy Birthday for tommorrowSmile

I nearly entered another marathon this morning before (sensibly) talking myself out of itShock I fancy doing Beachy head marathon which is October but it would mean training through the summer hols and in the heat, neither of which will be easy for me. Plus we have plans for lots of camping trips this summer.

I have tentatively decided to do an off road marathon very local to me next spring and if that goes well to do Beachy next year as wellConfused

peachsmuggler · 16/03/2011 14:17

Great news bout your mum Moshi Smile The running club I ran with last year was really just a running course that sort of continued on for a few months after it was complete. I did go running at the start of last summer with Dulwich Park Runners though in the end didn't join due to various reasons, Summer heat (did I mention I hated running int he summer Wink ) and ttc. I think I would like to join them in the future as they were lovely and friendly. I would probably only do speed training with them though as, like most people here, I like running on my own too much to run with a club all the time.

playtheday, well done! You see, only your second run and already you are improving. Stitches are rubbish huh, try to breath deeply and keep upright and they should go away.

Doyouthink, the doubts are understandable but am sure it is the tiredness talking, you'll be fine.

Wheely well done on your 8 miler.

thecoo I agree with the others, 3 months is plenty of time to work up to 10 miles, as you are doing a fair amount of miles per week and you have already done 7. Maybe you could cut back on number of runs and start increasing one of them by a bit each week. Good luck!

Very good to see you Goldberry, glad you made it through your 30 mins. Onwards and upwards!

Paws, you are going WHERE on your birthday?!? Mine is next Wednesday and was going to go out for a nice lunch or something Blush Happy Birthday for tomorrow anyway!

Step away from the marathon entry forms Doyouthink Wink. Know what you mean about training in the summer, that would kill me. If I ever do a marathon I will have to be training and running in Autumn and Winter....

Went out for 4 miles this morning but had to come home after 3 for a poo Blush Blush Blush Blush Blush Blush
