Brexit mega thread part 15a - looking forwards

Just rebooting the most recent thread

At the moment the UKs issues are rather over shadowed by events elsewhere
but maybe that is a good thing.

The German election on Sunday is worth watching
Right wing European politicians pulling out of CPAC speeches because they realise its not a good look
Farage floundering to stay relevant

and the possibility of the return of free movement for our kids if not us

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion

In Summary
While Euroscepticism exists, the overall trend is towards increased support for the EU, with a majority in favor of continued membership. The geopolitical environment has strengthened the perceived benefits of EU membership for many member states.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 08/09/2025 06:21

@DuncinToffee

Key words were:

“perceived benefits”

No mention of actual benefits.

”for many members” as opposed to all members.

Net takers like Ireland and Poland will always think EU is good as they are being given free money. Also, don’t forget there are more members who are takers than contributors.

It’s more informative to remember that Countries like; Iceland, Norway and Switzerland have been approached by the EU to be full members, but all three have declined. Each one is better off for their decision.

@pointythings

Both Hungary and the Netherlands have applied for exemption from EU migration laws.

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2025 08:15

@GlobeTrotter2000

Those countries have access to something that the UK has not

Alexandra2001 · 08/09/2025 08:42

GlobeTrotter2000 · 08/09/2025 06:39

@pointythings

Both Hungary and the Netherlands have applied for exemption from EU migration laws.

Radio 4 reporting that as the UK has no access to Schengen data bases outside of the EU, on failed asylum decisions, migrants come here for a 2nd bite of the cherry....knowing full well they cannot be deported back..... no Dublin.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 10/09/2025 14:28

@Alexandra2001
@DuncinToffee

If being an EU member is key to immigration control, why:

Did the Netherlands and Hungary apply for exemption from EU migration rules. Hungary was fined €200 million and a penalty of €1 million per day. If EU laws are not detrimental to Hungary, why did they not comply?

Is immigration higher in Germany, France, Spain and Italy than the UK.

DuncinToffee · 10/09/2025 15:19

@GlobeTrotter2000 Could you just stick to one thread with asking the same question.

I shall repeat my question as well, any evidence on how brexit has not contributed to the UK's increased immigration/boat crossings?

Where did i say key??

Brexit means we don't know who comes here, their previous asylum situation, even ex minister Chris Philp said Brexit made deportations harder.

We provide a 2nd chance and little means of return.

DuncinToffee · 10/09/2025 15:41

The Netherlands didn't get their opt-out anyway.

They decided on stricter national policies

GlobeTrotter2000 · 14/09/2025 09:57

@DuncinToffee

But why did the Netherlands want to opt out if EU immigration laws are not damaging? Will the Netherlands stricter immigration policies take priority over EU law and the ECHR?

any evidence on how brexit has not contributed to the UK's increased immigration/boat crossings?

That’s for you to provide. Remember the burden of proof is upon the one that points the finger. However, I would agree that crossings have increased since Labour took power in July 2024.

What is provable is; Germany, France, Spain and Italy all have higher immigration than the UK. So, I am not convinced that EU membership guarantees lower immigration.

DuncinToffee · 14/09/2025 10:06

I am not bothered with convincing you and as I said on the other thread I assume you cannot find any evidence otherwise you would have provided it.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 29/09/2025 22:31

From 2013 to 2016 polls forecast a remain victory in the referendum. They were wrong.

The London Economic article does not specify the sample size, but I would wager it was not measured in the 10s of millions. As the Talkin Police Man has stated, the only poll that counts is the one at the ballot box.

Peregrina · 30/09/2025 12:46

I knew that Globetrotter would be on to give us a history lesson, but thought it was a waste of time posting.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 30/09/2025 19:14

But you posted anyway?

MaybeNotBob · 30/09/2025 20:26

So did you, even though you had nothing to say...

GlobeTrotter2000 · 30/09/2025 21:12

I said

But you posted anyway.

It received an applause. How many of your posts receive applause?

MaybeNotBob · 30/09/2025 21:12

QED

DuncinToffee · 30/09/2025 21:13

You got applause, well done 👏👏👏

GlobeTrotter2000 · 01/10/2025 04:08

See, Duncin Toffee has also applauded.

MaybeNotBob · 01/10/2025 07:21

I think that was a slow hand clap...

DuncinToffee · 01/10/2025 08:21

Veryy slow... but AI wouldn't pick that up

DuncinToffee · 03/10/2025 08:47

‘Polling commissioned by POLITICO shows the government’s agri-food deal agreed in principle with Brussels is popular with Remainers and Leavers alike — even when they're told it means following EU rules.
